PROCESS OUTLINE

At IIM Calcutta, the placement process for the Post Graduate


Program takes place in two phases.
• Lateral Placements – To cater to the needs of the students
with prior work experience.
• Final Placements – For all the eligible students who wish to
get placed through the process.

The Career Development & Placement Office is responsible for


the recruitment activities on campus, in association with the
Student Placement Representatives. The process includes some
or all of the following steps:
• Applications, followed by shortlists based on CVs
• Group Discussion or Group Interaction
• Personal Interview(s)
• Final offer roll-out by the firm and acceptance

The Final Placement Process for the batch of 2015-17 was


organized in the second week of February 2017. The entire
process was completed within 3 days and saw a participation
of more than 160 firms.

Some students, who wanted to pursue alternate career paths


like entrepreneurship decided to opt out from the placement
process. Such students are eligible for the Deferred Placement
Policy; under which they can appear for placements at a later
stage if they wish to.

BATCH PROFILE
The 52nd Batch of PGDM (2015-17) of IIM Calcutta comprises 458
students, out of which more than 93% hold a Bachelor’s Degree
in Engineering. About 3 percent of the batch are Commerce
graduates.

1. Banking and Financial Services remains the highest


contributor, with 29% of the total offers
2. Consulting followed with a total of 22% of the offers secured
by the batch
3. General Management roles made up 15% of the offers, a lot
of which came during the Lateral Placement Season
4. Operations & Systems sector, which also includes e-
commerce and product management, came up with 14% of
the offers
5. Sales & Marketing roles contributed to 12% of the pie, and
continued to attract talent.

LATERAL PLACEMENTS

The Lateral Placements are intended for the candidates with prior
work experience before joining IIM Calcutta’s Post Graduate
Program. Such students directly get recruited into managerial
positions of prestigious companies, during the Laterals season. The
recruitment is based on the relevance, quality and duration of
the past work experience of the eligible candidates.

Lateral Placements offer a unique


proposition where the candidates &
firms are allowed to mutually discuss
the roles & responsibilities and
negotiate on the remuneration. As a
result, the students have the choice
and flexibility to tailor their own role &
fit in the organization. IIM Calcutta
successfully concluded its Laterals
season for the 52nd PGP batch with a
total of 112 offers.
General Management roles, where students get to work across
multiple functions in the first year, were the most sought after
during Lateral placements. Key recruiters include Aditya Birla
Group, Ericsson, Hinduja Group, Tata Administrative Services,
Wipro Global 100 etc

E-Commerce sector was an active recruiter as well, with offers


from Amazon, Ola, Paytm, Uber etc.

Star India and Asian Paints were the major recruiters in Sales &
Marketing, whereas Yes Bank and Societe Generale recruited for
Finance roles

FINAL PLACEMENTS

It was a fruitful Final Placements season


for IIM Calcutta, with a total of 232 offers
being made. This was on top of the 120
Pre-Placement Offers bagged by the
students, who were rewarded for their
credible performance during summer
internships and also the 112 Laterals
offers.

The season started with Slot-0, on the


11th of February. Most of the batch got
placed in Slot-0 and the season
concluded on the 15th of February.

Banking & Financial Services

IIM Calcutta retains its crown as the s Finance Campus of India,


with an impressive total of 137 offers in Banking and Financial
Services. These results have reflected well in the B-school rankings,
where IIM Calcutta stood as the No.1 B-school for careers
globally for the second year in succession (Financial Times MIM
Rankings – 2016).

Prestigious financial firms like Arga Investment, Avendus, Bank of


America (BAML), Citibank, Edelweiss, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JP
Morgan etc. made lucrative offers to students who were
interested in pursuing a career in finance. As always, IIM Calcutta
attracted the highest number of front-end IB/ VC/ PE/ Markets
offers from the industry.

FINAL PLACEMENTS

Consulting

IIM Calcutta’s students continued to excel in the in the consulting


domain, by securing a total of 59 Pre-Placement Offers, bettering
the previous year’s record by a huge margin. Consulting is the
preferred choice of students looking for cross-industry
assignments.

While firms like Bain & Co., Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey
(15 offers each) and AT Kearney recruited 53 students through
PPOs and Final Placements, other recruiters included Accenture,
Alvarez & Marsal, Deloitte, Ernst & Young etc

Sales & Marketing

Sales and marketing was yet another sought after sector, with a
variety of roles on offer. Major firms from the FMCG domain like
HUL, ITC, Johnson & Johnson, P&G, Reckitt Benckiser etc
recruited students during the Final Placements season.

Other major recruiters include Bennett Coleman & Co, Coca


Cola, Samsung etc.

FINAL PLACEMENTS

General Management & Strategy

Conglomerates recruit students in leadership roles to hone them


into future leaders, through fast-tracked career progression.
Aditya Birla Group, Airtel, CK Birla Group, Reliance Industries Ltd,
TAS etc were notable recruiters in this sector, during the Final
Placements season.

Lucrative international offers for leadership roles were made by


Nokia Networks, a first time recruiter.

Operations & Systems

Operations sector is preferred


by the candidates looking for
on-ground experience, while
the technology enthusiasts
look out for Systems and IT
roles.

Notable recruiters for the


Finals season include Airtel,
Ernst &Young, IBM, Johnson &
Johnson, Yatra.com etc

CONCLUSION
IIM Calcutta exceeded expectations by completing the Final
Placements for the batch of 2015-17 within 3 days, coming at the
time of a presumed job market slowdown. This stands testimony
to the trustworthiness of the IIM Calcutta brand in the industry.
Such stupendous results were made possible through various
factors like the quality of admissions and academics, the
concentrated efforts put in by the placement team and the
support of our esteemed alumni. The institute shall take forward
the learnings from the current process and strive to improve upon
its already impressive performance.
