Questions to Consider Asking Your Child's Teacher

Academics:
What is my child expected to learn, know, and do at this grade level?
What does my child do well, and what does he or she struggle with? Can you give me examples?
How do you know when my child is making progress and when he/she needs additional help?
What are you doing to support and motivate him/her?
How do you challenge my child when he/she is doing well at something?
How do you support my child when he/she needs extra help?
What does my child get excited about learning?
What can I do at home to support him/her?
Are there programs or services in the community that could also help my child?
How many days of school has my student missed or arrived late?

In the Classroom/School:
Does my child seem engaged or happy at school?
Has he/she made friends?
How does my child get along with classmates and adults?

Parent Tips:
Consider bringing your child with you to join the conversation.
Always remember to share your own thoughts and feelings about your child.
Describe what you see as your child’s strengths and areas for growth.
State any important information that might help your child’s teacher better understand your
child’s approaches to learning, strengths, challenges, and interests.
Explain where you think your child needs more support.
Describe the best way for the teacher or school personnel to communicate with you (e.g., a note
in your child’s book bag, a voicemail, an e-mail, etc.).

Homework Contract: Homework can be a hot-button issue for both you and your child. Setting up
a homework contract is a good way to defuse some of that tension and avoid homework battles.
It’s also a way to make sure you and your child both know your responsibilities.

Have you met your school’s parent coordinator? Often, NYC public school parents ask, “Who can
I talk to in my child’s school if I have questions about school services, programs, or my child’s
teacher?” Have you met your school’s parent coordinator? Parent coordinators are important
parts of every school community, as they can help parents with many of their questions and
concerns. If you have yet to meet your school’s parent coordinator, we suggest you take a
moment over the next couple of weeks (or even during this year’s Parent-Teacher Conferences) to
introduce yourself to him/her; parent coordinators can offer invaluable support and guidance
throughout the school year that can benefit you and your children for months and years to come.

Students in Temporary Housing (STH): Each borough has a DOE STH Liaison/Content Expert from the
Office of Safety & Youth Development (OSYD) who provides connections to borough wide
resources and has extensive knowledge of legal rights of the STH populations including the

DOE liaison, who is meant to connect schools & families to support them with enrollment,
transportation, transfers, etc. and meet the educational needs of STH children and youth.

Diversity Event for District 22 Families: All DISTRICT 22 families are invited to attend on Tuesday,
November 6, 2018 from 9 AM – 1 PM at the Brooklyn College Student Center 2705 Campus Road.
There will be STEM hands on activities. Students are invited to attend with their family members.

Gifted & Talented Admissions

Gifted & Talented Admissions Guide: Students currently in pre-K through second grade can qualify
to apply to Gifted & Talented (G&T) programs by taking the G&T test in January 2019. If you’d like
to have your child tested, just visit www.MySchools.nyc , create an account with your email
address, and schedule the test! You can also schedule your child’s test in person at a Family
Welcome Center or at your child’s current public school. The deadline to sign up to test is

English Language Learners
A Guide for Parents of ELLs in New York State: This ten page booklet includes Bilingual Education
and English as a New Language program descriptions, Frequently Asked Questions about English
Language Learners and Multilingual Learners, Facts about Bilingualism and Bilingual Education,
links to English Language Learner parent resources, and tips on “Participating in Your Child’s
Education.” This booklet has been translated into 25 languages, including the top ten ELL home
languages in NYS.

PA/PTA: The District office in conjunction with Presidents’ Council will be holding a serious of
workshops each month. At the Thursday, November 8th Presidents’ Council Meeting there will be a
financial workshop. Presidents should invite their treasurers and financial secretaries to attend. For

School Leadership Team: District 22 will hold a School Leadership Team Training* on Wednesday,

*CR-A-655: To be eligible to receive the annual remuneration of $300, SLT members, including
students and CBO representatives, must complete 30 hours of service on the SLT and attend a
mandatory training session relating to CEPs and budget issues each year, which training shall be
offered by the Department of Education (DOE). Team members who attend training but serve less
than 30 hours may request remuneration on a pro-rata basis.

District 22 School News & Community Events

P.S. 52: On October 10, 2018 P.S. 52 held their Family Sports Night
Event. Students and parents came wearing their sneakers
ready for physical activity. Everyone enjoyed an evening of
soccer, relay races and other activities. We stressed the
importance of a healthy body and healthy mind.

IS 240: The Magnet School of STEM spent their Sunday at the NY Aquarium with Urban Advantage
for Family Science Day. Families received free admission to the Aquarium after hours! I.S. 240 also
secured tickets to WE Day UN at Barclays center on September 26th. Students who applied to
become Student Ambassadors at the start of the 2018 school year, were invited to this unparalled
event which brings together world-renowned speakers, A-List performers, and tens of thousands of
youth to celebrate a year of action that transforms communities and changes lives. Some guest
speakers included Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Martin Luther King III, Juan Manuel Santos (Former
President of Columbia), Jacob Tremblay (Wonder actor), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Democratic
Nominee for the 14th Congressional District of New York), and many more. Performances by Nas,
Sofia Carson, and others! By attending this event, Andries Hudde has promised to become a WE
school and participate in the WE movement. WE Schools is a unique, four-step program delivered
by educational partners in the WE movement, to groups across North America and the UK. We will
challenge young people to identify the local and global issues that spark their passion and
empower them with the tools to take action. We must plan and carry out at least one local and
one global action to improve our communities and the world.

P.S./I.S. 206: held three sessions of family math - 9 am, 2:30 pm( during family engagement) and 6
pm tonight. Throughout the 3 workshops over 100 parents attended to find out how to make math
fun! Thanks to Ms. DeNatale for her three great workshops. She beat out Broadway; they only have
two performances a day! The 206 community celebrated the retirement of our school crossing
guard Mike Rodriquez after 13 years of serving the 206 community on the corner of East 23rd Street
and Gravesend Neck Road. Councilman Deutsch's office attended and brought a proclamation
for Mike.

District 22 Presidents’ Council: Heavy rain didn’t stop our dedicated District 22 PA/PTA Presidents
from attending their monthly Presidents’ Council Meeting & Bylaws Workshop. Bylaws detail how a
PA/PTA operates and is governed, and must be in compliance with Chancellor’s Regulations A-
660. A copy of the PA/PTA bylaws should be available for view at every meeting. PA/PTA
Presidents are required to attend monthly Presidents’ Council Meetings. Important District
information, best practices are shared, and an opportunity for presidents to meet and discuss
what events they are holding in their schools. Feedback is given
to the Presidents’ Council

designee each month.

P.S. 245: The, Magnet School for Arts and Science had two fifth grade students, Aneres H. and
Wyatt G., participate in a reading and writing project at Teacher's College/Columbia University
titled "Raise Your Voice." This two day workshop was designed to support young people in writing,
speaking, and planning for action around a cause or an issue that they care about in their
community or in the bigger world. Aneres chose the "Unfairness of Family Laws and Children's
Rights" while Wyatt discussed "Animal Activism and how It effects the environment. P.S. 245
encourages students to participate in outside academic events and commends them for keeping
us proud! PS 245, Magnet School of Arts and Science had its Spirit Day Parade. The students made
costumes depicting either an Arts or Science theme, along with a poster identifying their class. We
marched through the neighboring community chanting the praises of our school, letting the
observers know who we are and why our school is special. But even more important was the
realization the children acquired that let them know that they can aspire to be anything they want
to be when they grow up. That whether it be a scientist, a painter, a doctor... they have the
potential to enter the profession of their choice. We made lots of noise, had fun and let our school
community be known. Yay PS 245, Magnet School of Arts and Science!

P.S. 236: On October 3rd, fourth and fifth grade students from P.S. 236 walked over to Strickland
Park to meet with seniors from the Sunrise Senior Living facility. The students and seniors enjoyed an
Intergenerational relay around the park to celebrate Go4Life month. The event celebrates the
importance of getting moving and enjoying the day. Third graders attend Assemblywoman Jaime
Williams' Bluefish Festival on Monday, October 15th.The students learned about aquatic life in
Jamaica Bay from representatives of the NY Aquarium. They also planted beach grass along the
shore line to protect the land along the Belt Pkwy. The National Park Service Rangers gave them a
tour of the area and pointed out ways to preserve the environment.

P.S. 152: is excited to announce that we will be getting a new schoolyard. Our students are hard at
work helping to design a schoolyard that the whole community will enjoy. We held a community
design night as well. Parents had a chance to offer suggestions as to what they want to see built in
the schoolyard. The students went to see a completed schoolyard to get design ideas and to play
on the equipment.

M.S. 890: On October 5th, we celebrated our second annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration.
Parents and families decorated the gymnatorium and brought in tasty, traditional dishes from their
countries of origin. Students learned about dress, sports and other interesting facts about the
Spanish speaking world. Joining in on the festivities were a representative from the consulate of
Guatemala and Councilmember Matthew Eugene. ¡Muchisimas Gracias a todos los padres que
ayudaron hacer de este evento un éxito!

P.S. 134: Parents are the best models when it comes to healthy eating. October 12, 2018, P.S. 134
hosted Nutrition Workshop “Rethink Your Drink” with Ms. M. Marwan, Cornell University Cooperative
Extension Community Health Educator. This workshop provided parents with information about the
importance of healthy nutrition in children’s lives, plus tips
and strategies to help their children to make positive
choices. P.S. 134 opened its doors to the community this past
October to promote the importance of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in the 21st
Century. The night's event helped motivate our students to
do projects and work in the different aspects of STEM.
Students and parents were presented a variety of exhibits
such as: color wheels, tower challenges and Newton's Law
of Motion. STEM night is important because it shows students of all ages how science, technology,
engineering and math work in their everyday lives. Even the teachers got in on the action. One of
the main objectives behind STEM night was to make learning fun. The crowds of smiling and
excited children certainly proved that this goal was
accomplished.

P.S. 193: We held our annual Breast Cancer
walk in support of all those who have lost the
battle to Breast Cancer and of those that are
still fighting. Dressed in their pink, our students
completed the walk, they participated in
creating a wall of hope and they wrote
inspirational messages to be delivered to the
hospital. It was fun but most importantly, our
students had an opportunity to unite and show
support for a good cause.

I.S. 14: On Friday, October 26, P.S. 52, P.S 194 and P.S. 254 made their way to Shell Bank JHS for
another year of fun filled “Safe Halloween" where the elementary students were able to "trick or
treat" inside the building. Some of the students from Shell Bank played games with the children.
They all had so much fun!

District 22 Cyberbullying and Conflict vs Bullying Workshop: The Office of Safety and Youth
Development (OSYD) facilitated this workshop at PS 222. The school community learned the
definition and identification of bullying, reporting and addressing bullying, cyberbullying, and the
NYC Department of Education’s new initiatives on the Respect for All webpage. This workshop was
held in response to our Parent Engagement Survey online over the summer, as we had almost 50%
of responses requesting this workshop. Reports of bullying and cyberbullying can be made through
RespectForAll@schools.nyc.gov . We thank OSYD’s Brandan Lang, Program Manager School
Culture and Climate, Serge St. Leger, Jr, Senior Program Manager for Student Safety Supports for
their informative workshop, and for PS 222’s Principal, Theresa Olivieri and staff for hosting.

District 22 Title I Workshop: The Office of State/Federal Education Policy & School Improvement
Programs on Title I Parent & Family Engagement (OSFEP) facilitated a workshop on the Title I Parent
and Family Engagement Requirements. Attendees were given an overview of Title I, updates on
the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), holding an Annual Title I Meeting, Parent Advisory
Councils, and Title 1 set aside funding. Thank you to Caresse Deville-Hughes, Senior Director Title I
Parent & Family Engagement, Katrina Brave, Senior School/District Improvement Liaison (S/DIL) for
facilitating and to IS 278’s Principal Debra Garofalo and staff for hosting. Resources from our

P.S. 312: On October 24, 2018, a special awards ceremony followed by an ice cream party were
held for the students who completed the Summer Reading Challenge. Assembly Member, Jamie
Williams presented each student with a certificate. Thank you, Ms. Williams and The Brooklyn
Public Library, for sponsoring this special event and thanks to the PS 312 Administration for the ice
cream party. October 26, 2018 PS 312 held its annual Halloween Dance. Students from grades K-5
enjoyed a DJ, dancing, snacks and prizes. Big thanks to our generous PA. A good time was had
by all.
