Food Lesson Plan 1
“What would you like?”

• Introduce food vocabulary with picture cards. Show the pictures, say the
words and have the class repeat them back to you a couple of times each.
o Pictures are provided for the following vocabulary: a burger, an ice
cream, a coke, a hotdog, a pizza, a soup, an orange juice, a milk
shake, chips, chocolate cake, the menu, the bill
Use fewer words with younger children, and increase the number of words if
your class can cope with more, or if they have previously covered this topic.

5 minutes
• Play Rapid Reaction (listening)

5 minutes
• Play Musical food (listening)

o When you stop the music say, ‘I’d like a burger’

5-10 minutes

• If you haven’t the space to play Musical food, or if your class are naughty,
play bingo or Collect the Card instead. (Both are provided in materials)

• Which one has gone? (Speaking)

o Start with three pictures, and quickly add in more pictures

o Students close their eyes; you remove one or more pictures, and then
ask, “What would you like?” When they hear that, it is the signal for
them to open their eyes and tell you which picture is missing.

5-10 minutes

• Zambezi River – Use the larger pictures provided. The group asks “What
would you like?” In turn they step on the flashcards saying, “I’d like a
burger, I’d like a coke, I’d like a pizza” etc. If you have younger children or
you want to make it simpler, have them name the words only, without saying
“I’d like” each time.

5-10 minutes

• Team Race (listening & speaking: “What would you like?”)

All students ask in unison ‘What would you like?’ You say ‘I’d like a ….burger!
If you haven’t the space for this game miss it out.

5-10 minutes

• Finish with a worksheet such as linking the words to the pictures or word
search.

• Additional options: Play for small groups The Best Restaurant (provided)

Here is a short play that you can do with a group of up to 8 children. Any
more and it can become a drag to rehearse. If you are taking private
lessons then you can take it in turns being the waiter or the client with
your student. You would teach the language first as shown in the ‘Food’
lesson plan. In the next lesson you can run through the play a couple of
times – not taking more than ten minutes. You’ll repeat this a couple of
times at subsequent lessons and you’ll find that after about 5 rehearsals it
will be ready for performance. You can put this play on in combination
with some games which show off all the language your class has learnt. If
you have a camera film the play and give a copy to your students on CD.

PLAY – THE BEST RESTAURANT

Customers: Excuse me
Waiter ignores them
Customers: Excuse me
Waiter yawns and scratches himself
Customers: EXCUSE ME!!!!

Waiter: Yes, yes, yes. What would you like?

Customers: I’d like the menu please

Waiter: Here you are…. What would you like?

Customers: I’d like a burger please

I’d like a coke please
Etc. until they have all ordered

Waiter: So that’s 7 burgers and, a coke….

Customers: NOOO!
I’d like a burger
I’d like a coke
I’d like a soup
Etc.

Waiter: OK, OK, OK.

Customers: Terrible service

Waiter: Here you are, a burger a coke, here you are.

Customers: URRR GROSS! That’s disgusting!

A couple of them get fly swatters out and start swatting the table
(optional: I’ve got a fly in my burger
I’ve got a fly in my soup
I’ve got an insect in my cake
I’ve got a fly in my chips
I’ve got a fly in my pizza)

Urrr, gross!!
They eat it anyway
Excuse me
Excuse me!!!

Waiter: Yes, yes, yes, what would you like?

Customers: I’d (or We’d) like the bill please

Waiter: Here you are, it’s 3 million dollars.

Customers: 3 million dollars! – one of them faints

3 million dollars – that’s terrible!!
Quick, let’s go. Go go go!!! Let’s go, quick!
They run out then everyone comes back on and
bows
Food Lesson Plan 2
“I like/I don’t like”
• Revision for Food lesson 1: Play The Big Freeze
5 minutes
• Second revision game: if you have a small group, play Zambezi River or, if
you have a large class, play Ping Pong.

Divide your group into two and have everyone say together “What would you
like?” Any member from team one says “I’d like a coke”, (or whatever word
they can think of), any member from team two replies with “I’d like a
milkshake”, (or whatever word they can think of as long as it is not coke,
because that has already been said), and so on back and forth between the
two teams until they have run out of ideas. Play one or perhaps two more
times. If your class is very young, or is struggling with Ping Pong – put the
flashcards out where they can be seen as prompts.
5-10 minutes
• Play All Change to introduce “I like” (listening).
Say “I like coke and milkshake” – the children with coke and milkshake
change places. After a few goes at this let one of the children do the calling
out. Swap this role around until a few children have had a go at calling out 2
or 3 changes each.
5-10 minutes
• Play Relay Race (speaking) using “I like…”.
5 minutes

• If your students have mastered the vocabulary and the phrase “I like …” then
skip this game. If they are younger or need more practise play Find the Pairs
Memory game. The students say “I like milkshake and burgers” if they turn
over the milkshake and the burger pictures.
10 minutes

• If your class can handle it, introduce a couple of things children do not like
such as fly soup and worm paté (extra flashcards provided).

• Play ladders to introduce “I don’t like” (listening).

Hand out the food flashcards – use mostly ones they know plus the new ones
(maggot pie and fly soup). Call out “I don’t like milk”. The children facing
each other with the milk get up and run the ladder. You want them to hear
“I don’t like…” repeatedly, but use “I like” from time to time as well.
10 minutes

• If you haven’t the space to play ladders, or if you haven’t enough people,
play Rapid grab it instead using “I don’t like”.
5-10 minutes

• Play pass the pictures, with the students saying “I like coke” or “I don’t like
coke” depending on their personal preference.
5-10 minutes
• Finish with a worksheet such as the crossword or spelling sheet.

Food Lesson Plan 3
“Do you like? Yes I do, No I don’t”
• Introduce some new words, such as fruit, bananas, apple, salad, sandwich,
popcorn, (flashcards provided). Play Jump the line with the new words and
also revising the words from lessons 1 & 2.
5 minutes
• Play Show me, either by having the flashcards on the walls, or by handing out
the cards around the class. Use all food vocabulary so far.

• Play pass the pictures, with the students saying “I like coke” or “I don’t like
coke” depending on their personal preference.
5 minutes

• Introduce Yes I do, No I don’t by asking the class “Do you like chocolate?” and
have them all reply in unison “Yes I do”. Do this a couple of times before
asking “Do you like fly soup?” and have them all say “No, I don’t”.
2 minutes

• Play Question and Answer. Ask the class “Do you like …?” If they like it they
stand up saying “Yes I do”. If they do not like it they sit down saying “No I
don’t”.
3 minutes

• Play Draw and when a student guesses correctly ask them “Do you like…?”
(whatever has been drawn), and they must answer “Yes I do”, or “No I don’t”.
5 minutes

• Do the Scissors, paper stone formation pair work exercise and have all the
students ask each other one question about what they like.
5-10 minutes

• For children old enough to write play Remember and Write with the food
vocabulary learned so far. Have them check each others spelling afterwards.
10 minutes

• If time, or for children not old enough to play Remember and write, play Potato
Race. If you haven’t room to play Potato Race play Shopping List memory
game.
10 minutes

• Introduce the rhyme “I like coffee, I like tea, I like my friends and my friends
like me”. Have the class say this with you a few times as you’ll use it in the
next lesson.
3 minutes

• Finish with a worksheet such as food anagrams or the pairwork sheet.

Instructions for pair work worksheet: Put the students in pairs and have them ask
each other “Do you like coke?” The partner replies “Yes I do”, or “No I don’t”,
according to their preference, and the person asking puts a tick or a cross in the
box, or you can have them write “yes” or “no” in the box under the picture.

Food Lesson Plan 4
More food vocabulary and revision
• Introduce six more food words of your choice. For example tomato, biscuits,
bread, milk, pie, lettuce, (flashcards provided). Hold up the flashcards and
have the class repeat the words a few times each.
5 minutes

• Play I spy revising all previous words, gradually adding in the new ones.
5-10 minutes

• Revise “What would you like?” “I’d like….” from lesson 1 by playing the
shopping version of Team Race question and answer. (Shopping lists are
provided).
10 minutes

• Revise “Do you like?” Yes I do, No I don’t” with Question and Answer, (sit or
stand version) which you played in lesson 3, but this time have the pupils take
it in turns to ask the questions.
5 minutes

• Say the rhyme you introduced in lesson 3 two or three times together: “I like
coffee, I like tea, I like my friends and my friends like me”.
5 minutes

• Play Pass the box, using food picture cards inside the box, and chanting the
above rhyme while the box is passed round.
5-10 minutes

• Play Abracadanagram. Each small group needs a complete set of words

(provided) to revise questions and answers learned in lessons 1-3. Select only
the 6 food flashcards from lesson 4. From age 6 upwards.
10 minutes

• If time, play Make a Sentence – simple version where you spell out a food
word, they call out the word and make a sentence with the word in. Ask for
sentences and questions. For example you spell out “A P P L E S” and say
“Make a sentence”. Someone will call out “I like apples” or “I don’t like
apples”. Then you spell out another word such as “F R U I T” and say “Make a
question”, and the class must ask the question “Do you like fruit?”

With younger children you can make it easier by holding up the picture of the
flashcard as you spell it out, or by saying the word rather than spelling it out.

10 minutes

• Finish up with any of the six worksheets provided which you have not yet used.
If you have used all the worksheets already finish with Team race on the board
where the players run up and write the words out you call out.
