RATIONALE/BACKGROUND

Suicide means ending your own life. It is sometimes a way for people to escape pain or
suffering. When someone ends their own life, we say that they “died by suicide.” Suicide is more
often as a result of depression or other mental illness (American Psychiatric Association.)
Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. Yet, there are considerable variations in
national suicide rates. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, Philippines’ suicide
rate reached 5.8 for male, 1.9 for females, and 3.8 for both sexes. The rate is based from the
number of cases affected per sample size of 100,000 people that approximately 1 million people
died by suicide. Also, according to the WHO, for 2017, suicide is the second leading cause of
death among 15 to 29-year-olds, and 78 percent of global suicides occur in low and middle-
income countries. The rate of suicide across the world reach 16 per 100,000 which increases in
the past four decades and substantially increases suicide rates globally as much as 60% (World
Health Organization, 2017). Recently the WHO’s South East Asia regional office reported that
the global suicide rate had risen from 10 suicides per 100,000 people in the 1950s to 18 suicides
per 100,000 people in 1995. As many as 73 percent of suicides in the world occur in developing
countries.

The researchers want to tell, that suicide is a timely relevant issue in the Philippines. For
example, in the province of Albay, there are cases of suicides among students from both high
school and college. According to the news, they were suspected committing suicide due to the
factors related to school paper works, family, love life, poverty insecurity and hopelessness.
In connection with this, the researchers conducted a project proposal “C.A.R.E (Connect,
Ask, Refer, Encourage: A Suicide Prevention Seminar” in Daraga National High School Daraga,
Albay to be reduce the risks and increase protective factors and warning signs among students
and to the teachers as well:

o Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that an individual will consider,
attempt or die by suicide.

o Warning signs indicate an immediate risk of suicide.

o Protective factors are characteristics that make it less likely that individuals will consider,
attempt or die by suicide.

MODELS OF SUICIDE CAUSATION

Historically, there have been two models that have been used widely to describe the cause
of suicide, the Stress Model and the Mental Health Model. The Stress Model suggests that
suicide is the result of a situation(s) that the person finds unmanageable. The model supports the
theory that all individuals are equally at risk of suicide, regardless of their mental health
background (Garland et al 1989). The Stress Model advocates for population-based public
education programs that teach stress management skills and broader societal changes such as
higher employment and supports efforts that address societal inequalities.

The Mental Health Model focuses on the evidence that links mental health disorders to
suicide and identifies the risk of suicide being largely confined to people who experience mental
illness. Proponents of the Mental Health Model believe that suicide prevention efforts should
be focused upon high-risk groups or individuals who are experiencing mental illness and
increasing the availability of mental health services.

The current thinking and research views suicide as an outcome of complex interactions
among neurobiological, genetic, psychological, social, cultural and environmental risk and
protective factors. No one factor can be attributed in isolation to the outcome of suicide. In an
attempt to understand the complex relationship between these factors a number of models of
suicide causation have been developed. Three of the most prominent models are illustrated in
figures 8-10. Figure 8 describes a complex interplay of risk factors, while figure 9 suggests a
linear casual pathway. Figure 10 presents four overlapping domains that may influence an
individual suicide.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A. Goals and Objectives

Suicide is common issue these days and it is widely discussed in institutions although it is
still condemned by the society. Much about discussing facts and truths behind this dark
sentiment of life, there are common myths about suicide which we need to eradicate in order to
comprehend the problem better we are able to curb this issue. Therefore, we are planning to
conduct a suicide prevention awareness education for students to reduce the students who are
struggling. The Suicide Prevention Seminar delivers help-seeking and well-being messages to
numerous students. The project aims to:

• Conduct a seminar for students to promote suicide prevention and awareness of

mental health issues.

• Identify more students at risk for suicide.

• Implement and evaluate an effective school-community based suicide prevention

program.

B. Methodology

This project will be done during dismissal of classes in the afternoon (1:00pm-4:00pm).
During dismissal of classes, we will give some flyers to students and announce our project
regarding the seminar for suicide prevention.

C. Timeline

a. Submission and approbation of the project proposal- 1 week

b. Planning for the activity proper- five (5) days

c. Implementation of activity- Every month

D. Benefits or Outcomes

In proposing this project, there are some benefits for us, who will conducting this project
and for our target students. These are the following benefits:

• Higher awareness and increase confidence of students in ability to intervene in suicidal

behaviors.

• Increase the readiness of the school to effectively reduce suicide crisis, intervene in a
crisis and manage the school environment following a suicide.

• Students will gain knowledge in this seminar regarding to this timely relevant issue in the
Philippines specifically in Daraga National High School.

• We will enhance our responses to students at risk for suicide and manage every student's
mindset about suicide.

Conclusion

To the best of our knowledge this is our comprehensive summary of our proposal the Let’s
C.A.R.E (Connect, Ask, Refer, Encourage: A Suicide Prevention Seminar), suicide is very crucial topic
that should take very seriously when intervening in a teen’s life. Suicide can be many things and it is
important to be able to recognize the warning sign that can lead to an attempted or successful taking of
one’s life. Teens can take their own lives for numerous reason including feeling depression and hopeless.
There are several ways that you can help teen if you feel that they are at risk at attempting suicide and it
just cowardly act to escape from suffering. But, on the other hand, if we endure the suffering of life, the
rewards is always greater that what we actually imagine. Therefore, it is great challenge for us to help
someone in need, console someone in depressed, and to comfort the agonized with the hope that has set
for us in this world full of happiness. Together, hopefully, we can decrease that statistic and save lives by
conducting this seminar.
