1. PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Method Statement for Painting of Building (Interiors & Exteriors
Wall) is to outline and describe in detail the procedure to be adopted such as type of
paint and recommended surface preparation, in which to ensure our compliance with
the Safety Requirements & Procedure and project specifications. Inform all
concerned supervisor including workers the value and importance of this activity
prior to implementation in any project.

2. SCOPE OF WORK:

The scope of this method statement covers the works in any Project (Building and
Substation) including building in existing plant as follows:
 Painting Works for Exterior walls, Interior walls, Floor Surfaces, Exposed
Ceiling/Slab Soffit, Cable / Battery Room, Metal Doors Ferrous/Non Ferrous
surfaces, and Below Raised Floor.

6. SAFETY & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:

 All workers shall be provided with complete Personal Protection Equipment


(PPE).
 All workers shall attend Safety Induction and training course to identify all
hazards associated with this work.
 All workers shall be provided with proper tools and equipment top execute
the work safely.
 All works shall comply with safety procedure or instruction as set in out in
project safety plan, client safety standard, and municipality rules and
regulation.
 MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) shall be displayed at work location as
appropriate.
 Work on height should be properly managed and use of ladders shall be
restricted.
 Tool box talk shall be conducted regularly.

7. WORK PROCEDURE:

7.1. Surface Preparation:


 Surfaces are to be prepared in accordance with good painting practices and
in accordance with the technical product information sheets of the painting
products.
 Painting must not take place where the surface are moist or greasy or may
become so before application of the first coat of paint (primer).
 Painting must not take place when the surface temperature is less than 3oC
above surrounding air’s dew point, when the air relative humidity is higher
than 85% and when the temperature is below 5oC.
 Prior to any application, the surface must be stable, firm, dry, and free of
dust and concrete laitance, removed loose particles, blemishes, and
deleterious materials by way of sanding. The surface must have no cracks.
 The parts not to be painted are protected prior to commence of painting
works.
 Before commencement of work, remove electrical switch and outlet plates,
surface hardware, frames of lighting fixtures, and all the other obstructions
and replace properly at completion of the work.

7.2. Mock-Up:
 Mock Samples will be prepared in the designated area for the Client /
Consultant approval using the correct material, number of coats, colour,
texture, and degree of gloss required.
 The Surfaces to receive painting shall be free from all loose particles and
prepared as per manufacturer's recommendation

7.3. Preparation of Painting Works:


 Check material, paint system, and subcontractor are approved by the
Engineer/Contractor.

 Delivered paint material shall be checked the following things:


o Expiry date, original label containers, manufacturer’s name, type of
paint, brand name, color designation, and instructions for mixing and
/or reducing.
 Ensure necessary work permit/clearance obtained from engineer prior of
painting works.
 Painting work shall not proceed in windy and rainy climate.
 Proper working platforms and lighting arrangement shall be provided.
 Scaffolding and working platform shall be checked against safety.

7.4. Coating:
 Each coat shall be applied uniformly over the entire surface. Any uneven
surface shall be rectified by filling up using approved Acrylic Filler, then apply
sanding when dry and apply recoat. On beams, columns and irregular
surfaces, edges shall be coated first and an extra pass made later.
 Each coat shall be allowed to dry for the time specified by approved before
application of any succeeding coat. Refer to Product Data and Specification
also to check Applicable Rate and Dry Film Thickness (DFT).
 Any primer coat exposed to excess humidity or rain before drying shall be
permitted to dry and the damaged area of primer should be removed to the
bare substrate. Dust and loose particle shall be removed by sanding until the
surface is dry, sound and cleaned. Re-apply using the same primer and when
dry apply paint filler to check for flat and smooth surfaces. When the surface
is ready to receive topcoat then applied the required coating to meet DFT and
specifications.
 The time interval between applications of two (2) successive coats must not
exceed that specified by product. Any coating shall be cleaned and free of
spray dust before the next coat is applied.
 Coatings shall be continuous that means free of pin holes, voids, bubbles and
other defects.
 Where application is to be carried out by brush, brushes shall be of a type
and quality as well as for using roller which permit proper application of the
material.
 For spray application, spray guns, hoses and pumps shall be cleaned before
new material is added. An adequate moisture trap shall be installed between
the air supply and each application unit.
 Specified film thickness for coating material shall be strictly observed. Dry film
thickness shall be checked with appropriate film thickness gauges.
 Before application of final coat, all damaged areas shall be properly repaired
using the original paint system.
 Apply Acrylic Protective Paint or ultra violet resistance for exterior wall and
use Acrylic Emulsion Resin for interior wall or as per approved painting
material.
 All materials must be collected and returned to the designated storage area
after working hours and properly secured and locked.

8. QUALITY CONTROLLING & INSPECTION:

 Inspection shall be carried out by Contractor QA/ QC personnel.


 Experienced supervisor staff will be employed for carrying out the work.
 Only skilled painter will be engaged for painting work.
 Check all the painting materials are approved as per the contract documents.
 Visual inspection after completion of painting works.
