Method Statement rectification of insufficient lapping length

45 dia. for column starter bar

1.0 General

- To identified and measure the insufficient lapping length 45 dia. to existing column
starter bar on site. Proper record in tabulate table and submit report to consultant at
all column point affected.
- Marking all starter bar column with colour tape for reference on site which starter bar
column is insufficient length. Consultant rep. and COW to joint inspection.
- There are two situations on site which are the reinforcement bar need to do
rectification base on method: -

a) Install extension column rebar T32 & T25

The column reinforcement to be extend slot in and tighten below the floor finish level
slab which means into the beam to follow requirement lapping length 45 dia. (refer
attachment 1)

b) Welding column rebar T32 & T25

Those areas congested with beam rebar that not allow to use option 1 above, to
propose using welding method (refer attachment 2). Linde Basic 7018 – low hydrogen
basic electrode to be use (refer attachment 3).

2.0 Procedure

Install column rebar T32 & T25

- Column rebar 1st Floor to 2nd Floor to be Install with follow require dimension (~ 5100
- 5500mm length) before slab and beam 1st floor to be concrete.
- To measure the column rebar plus the lapping for 2 nd floor column starter bar as
design requirement before install.
- Place the reinforcement as per drawings ensuring the following aspects properly as
per type & size of bars, number of bars and location of bends & cranks.
- Install the column rebar plus the lapping length into the beam to get 45 dia. The
dimension rebar to be checked and tied together so that the column rebar strong
enough to maintain their alignment/verticality and shape under all imposed load
during placing and vibrating of the concrete slab and beam.
- As for reference, floor finish level to be mark at column rebar to ensure the rebar not
lowered down during concreting.
- On this stage, while the column rebar that cannot to slot in beam will be welding after
concrete the floor slab and beam.
- String to be used and prepare to each gridlines to make sure the alignment each
column is in correct position.
- This method for those area that can be insert into the beam.
- After install, pre inspection checking with consultant and C.O.W before concrete.
- During concreting progress, supervisor and foreman will check time to time the
verticality of column rebar using spirit water level equipment.
- Barbender and site surveyor need to fully on site during concreting progress to make
sure all column bar in right position.
Welding column rebar T32 & T25
- The process of welding column starter bar will be done after the floor slab cemented
for a 24 hours.
- Before the welding process start, all insufficient length starter bar that need to
welding to be clean.
- Welded lap joint shall be follow as per details welding as per attachment. (Refer
attachment 2.1 & 2.2)
- Before proceed to all welding works, mock-up of welding to be done and check by
consultant representative / Client COW. To carry out weld tensile strength test at lab.
- The welding works to be done by competent welder. Machinery and material to
prepared.
- The electrodes should be preheat for maximum of 2 hours at 300˚Celcius in an
electrode oven before welding. The temperature to be maintained during welding
process.
- Column bar and existing starter bar should install align in vertical position and tied
properly.
- To welding vertical from bottom to above direction at between of column rebar and
existing starter bar (refer attachment 2.1 & 2.2).
- During welding, the welder must make sure the current on equipment to be maintain,
the proper electrode angle, weld length and correct travel speed.
- After welding, all fillet weld to be clean and dye penetrant inspection to be done on
site to check the quality of welding.
- Welding material and Machine to be used
i. Electrode type and size: Low Hydrogen Linde Basic 7018 4mm dia.
ii. Current type: DC positive (150-200 Amps)
iii. Welding Machine: DC Welding Machine MMA 315d
iv. Electrode Dryer: Electrode Portable Dryers U-10

3.0 Safety measure

 Cutting of rebar and welding shall be supervised by qualified supervisor.

 Proper precautions shall be taken while welding using gloves and goggles.
 Safety shoes shall be worn while handling and transportation.
 All worker should wear required PPE’s (safety helmet, shoes, gloves)
