HW-29 (25 points)

i) An insulated, rigid tank that is initially evacuated is connected via a valve to a large vessel
containing steam at an absolute pressure of 40 bar and temperature of 500o C. The valve is
opened until the tank is filled with steam to an absolute pressure of 20 bar. If the volume of
the tank is 0.5 m3 , determine:

a) the final temperature of the steam in the tank, in o C.

b) the mass of steam in the tank at the end of the process, in kg.
c) the entropy generation, in kJ/K.

ii) Air expands from an absolute pressure of 10 bar and temperature of 400 K to an absolute
pressure of 4 bar in a throttling valve operating at steady state. The air then flows through a
steady state heat exchanger where it is cooled to a temperature of 295 K. The mass flow rate
of air is 0.5 kg/s and the heat exchanger pressure drop is negligible.

a) For a control volume enclosing the heat exchanger, the valve and enough of the local
surroundings such that the heat transfer occurs at the ambient temperature of 295 K,
determine the entropy generation, in kW/K.
b) If the throttling valve was replaced by an adiabatic turbine operating isentropically, what
would be the entropy production, in kW/K?
c) Compare the results of parts a) and b) and discuss.

HW-30 (25 points)

Air at an absolute pressure of 18 kPa and temperature of 216 K flows into an adiabatic, steady
state diffuser of a jet engine with a velocity of 265 m/s. Air decelerates to a velocity of 50 m/s at
the diffuser outlet.

a) Calculate the temperature of the air at the diffuser outlet, in K.

b) Assuming the air flows isentropically through the diffuser, determine the absolute pressure of
air at the diffuser outlet, in kPa.

c) Assuming friction is present, would the pressure of air at the diffuser outlet be greater than,
less than, or equal to the value found in part (b)? Why?

HW-31 (25 points)

A power generation system operating at steady state consists of three components: an adiabatic air
compressor having an isentropic compressor efficiency of 80%, a heat exchanger, and an adiabatic
turbine having an isentropic turbine efficiency of 90%. Air enters the compressor at an absolute
pressure of 1 bar and temperature of 300 K with a mass flow rate of 5.8 kg/s and exits at an absolute
of pressure of 10 bar. Air enters the turbine at an absolute pressure of 10 bar and temperature of
1400 K and exits at an absolute pressure of 1 bar. Determine:

a) the net power output of the overall power system, in kW.

b) the entropy generation of the compressor, in kW/K.

c) the entropy generation of the turbine, in kW/K.
