2016 “Pictor Classicus Sum: The ‘Puzzling Borderline Case’ of Giorgio de Chirico’s Late
Career” - Paper published in Mills Academic Research Journal, Oakland, CA.
● Abstract: In the well-known essay “Avant-Garde and Kitsch”, the art critic
Clement Greenberg erroneously condemns the work of Giorgio de Chirico,
the founder of Metaphysical Painting as kitsch. In a few words, Greenberg
accuses De Chirico’s late work of being a watered down version of genuine
culture that aids fascist regimes. This paper explains Greenberg’s oversight
by demonstrating how De Chirico’s late paintings are progressive and fit
Greenberg’s definition of avant-garde.
