animals to bite them on the tip of
the tongue, producing in the pair

Should we poo every day?
Between three times a day
and three times a week is
what some like to call the
'Goldilocks zone for pooing'.
Some days you might find yourself
in and out of the toilet, and some
days might go by without a single
visit for a Number Two.
Should this be a cause for
concern?
We asked five experts if we have to
poo every day - and five out of five
said no.
Here are their detailed responses:

The human body is complex,
which helps to explain why so
many "normal" functions differ
between people,
including sleep,
urination and
defecation. What is
perceived as
normal for many is
out of normal for
others. Pooing is
one such example
of this range. What
is normal is well
defined yet broad.
In many studies
into normal

pooing ranges
from three times per day to three
times per week. Less than 40 per
cent of healthy people poo once a
day.
Pooing out of the normal for an
individual might signify illness
such as infection (pooing more) or
cancer (pooing blood). Sometimes
not pooing at all might indicate
illness, such as a metabolic
condition.

Constipation can be caused by
many factors, including a range of
medical conditions, some
medications (such as opioids,
some antacids), nutritional
supplements (such as iron) and of
course, a diet low in fibre.
The best way to promote optimal
digestive health and regular bowel
motions is to drink plenty of water
and consume high fibre foods at
every meal. This can be achieved
through a varied diet including
wholegrain breads and cereals,
legumes, nuts and seeds,
vegetables and fresh fruits.

In a recent large study of 4775
people reporting "normal" bowel
patterns, it was found that about
95 per cent of people move their
bowels between three and 21
times weekly. So between three
times a day and three times a
week is what I like to call the
"Goldilocks zone for pooing".
But just as important as frequency
is form. To describe our stool
consistency, we use the Bristol
Stool Form Scale which uses a
seven-point scale ranging from
Type 1 "separate hard lumps, like
nuts" to Type 7 "watery no solid
pieces". Type 4 ("Like a sausage
or snake, smooth and soft") is the
Nirvana of all bowel actions, but 50
per cent of normal patients report

Stool is the end product of our gut
metabolising our food, and it
consists of non-absorbed
material, microbes and water.
Each week the average person
produces between 500 and 1100
grams of stool. The frequency of
defecation is governed by many
factors including diet, the intrinsic
motor activity of the gut, the rectal
capacity, behavioural factors, as
well as the gut microbiome.
Studies have generally confirmed
the "three and three" rule – that
normal bowel frequency varies
between three times a day, and
once every three
days.
When assessing
whether people
have constipation
there's an
emphasis on
symptoms in
addition to stool
frequency. So a
person who
moves their
bowels less often
than once a day,
but does not have
any discomfort,
straining, or other
symptoms, is normal.
Vincent Ho, Gastroenterologist:
No
Studies in the UK and Sweden
found almost all patients had a
frequency of bowel motions
between three times per week and
three times per day. So this is
thought to be the normal range for
how often you should go to the
toilet. Experiencing temporary
changes in bowel frequency or
consistency is normal.
Many non-disease factors are
known to affect the frequency of
bowel motions including fluid
intake, physical activity, diet, age
and social factors such as
embarrassment in going to the
toilet at work.

Whether you find farting
funny, disgusting or like to
pretend you never do it, it's
a bodily function we all
perform.
Also known as passing wind
among other, less polite names,
on average we produce half a litre
of fart gas a day.
If everything is ticking along nicely
, this fart gas is spread out over
fifteen daily farts.
Clare Collins, a professor in
nutrition and dietetics at the
University of Newcastle in New
South Wales, Australia, writes for
The Conversation to explain what
farts are and what happens if you
hold them in.
She warns: "The
next time you feel
a large volume of
intestinal gas
getting ready to
do what it does,
try to move to a
more convenient
location. Whether
you make it there
or not, the best
thing for your
digestive health
is to just let it go."
She adds: "A
build up of
intestinal gas can
trigger abdominal
distension, with
some gas reabsorbed into the
circulation and exhaled in your
breath.
"Holding on too long means the
build up of intestinal gas will
eventually escape via an
uncontrollable fart."
Dr Patricia Raymond, a physician
and a fellow of the American
College of Gastroenterology
spoke to Refinery29 and
explained why some days are
gassier than others.
Firstly, why do we fart?
Everyone farts, with the average
being between 5 to 15 times a day
according to the NHS .
As for why we fart, it's a

physiological necessity.
We need release all that intestinal
gas which builds up as a result of
digesting food.
This gas can be found throughout
the digestive tract, including the
stomach, small intestine, colon,
and rectum.
Gas is also automatically
accumulated as a result of
swallowing air when we chew or
talk.
The build-up can also be caused
by accumulating bacteria in our
gut and carbohydrates which
haven't been digested properly.
Healthy eating
Not all the food we eat gets
digested. Anything our small
intestine doesn't process gets
passed on to our large intestine
where it brews.
U n f o r t u n a t e l y, w e o w e o u r
smelliest farts to the healthiest
foods.
Fruit, vegetables, whole-grains
and legumes all generate a stink.
Onions, broccoli, cauliflower,
cabbage, and sprouts contain a
carbohydrate called raffinose,
which the stomach and the small
intestine are also unable to digest.
Too much air
There are two 'sources' of our
farts. One is the gas produced in
our large intestine.
The other is the air we swallow,

which makes its way through our
digestive tract.
The good news is if you're
swallowing a lot of air, the farts
which are a by-product tend to be
odourless, rather than the silent-
but-deadly variety.
It's called 'aerophagia' and it's
caused by eating your meals
quickly, chewing gum, or drinking
lots of carbonated beverages.
Absorption
Now on to the silent-but-violent
variety.
When farts are particularly
unpleasant, it may be because our
bodies are having trouble
absorbing certain nutrients.
We all react differently to various
food types, but

Children should spend more time barefoot to
encourage a healthier foot structure
Humans have gone unshod
for millions of years; it is only
in the last few centuries that
people have started wearing
shoes.
However, a recent survey shows
that shoe wearing among young
boys isn't universal. German
children and teenagers spend
most of their day in shoes, while
about 90% of their South African
counterparts go barefoot.
Aside from the obvious climate
differences, it is tempting to think
that South Africa's lower economic
ranking, compared with
Germany's, is the main reason for
the absence of footwear. But this
reasoning has been
challenged by results
from our recent survey.
We gathered information
on the footwear habits of
714 boys attending a
secondary school in a
wealthy part of Auckland,
New Zealand. Almost
half of the students
(45%) spent most of their
time barefoot. Many of
the students in this study
were even willing to run
distances of 100 to 3,000
metres on a hard track surface
without shoes.
Foot structure
Differences in foot structure
between those who have never
worn shoes and those who are
usually in shoes have been
described for over a century. In
one seminal 1905 study, Phil
Hoffman, warned how putting the
fashionable desires of customers
over the health of their feet had led
to shoe design “that more or less
crowds the front of the foot”.
The main developmental result of
growing up in shoes appears to be
a narrower foot and a lower arch.
The result of this is more
concentrated pressure at the heel
and the ball of the foot during
movement. By contrast, those who

grow up barefoot have wider feet
and have a more even distribution
of pressure towards the outside
edge of the foot and across the
toes.
Running as nature intended
We don't know what effect growing
up in shoes has on the
development of movement skills,
or the risk of injury in sport, but
logic suggests that growing up
barefoot is a good thing. The heel
of the foot is highly sensitive to
pain, meaning that when people
run barefoot they tend to avoid
landing on their heel and instead
defer the pressure to the mid and
forefoot. This allows a broader
surface area to absorb force.
In order to avoid a heel strike, the
foot must never be too far in front
of the body. As a result, barefoot
runners tend to have a shorter
stride. A shorter stride needs less
leg extension, which is why
barefoot runners have greater
bend at the knee and a more
pointed foot toward the floor.
These joint positions allow
muscles around the knee to help
control landing and allow the ankle
to behave in a more spring-like
fashion.
The problem with shoes
Covering the heel of the foot
reduces the sensation it
experiences when coming into
contact with the ground. The
running shoe, containing a
cushioned heel, allows the runner
to land on the heel of the foot with

an extended leg. This is perhaps
why about 75% of runners
nowadays are heel strikers.
Running using an extended limb,
overstriding, results in force being
absorbed through the heel, bony
structures and joints, with less
assistance from muscle. This may
be one of the reasons most
running injuries are to structures
that are not designed to absorb
force (shins, feet and knees).
Interestingly, when people remove
their shoes, most revert to middle
and forefoot striking.
Children and teenagers who grow

and Collingwood at the MCG.

Marc Marquez wins 2018 Grand Prix of Aragon
HE may have more than one

championship trophy, but Marc
Marquez's victory in Aragon
shows he is still more than
willing to fight for it.
The Repsol Honda rider outduelled
Andrea Dovizioso to claim his sixth
win of the year to extend his points
lead to 72 with five races remaining.
The enthralling race came at the
expense of Jorge Lorenzo, whose
race lasted only as far as Turn 1.
Marquez made a lightning start to be
close enough to have a dive for the
lead, forcing both he and the Ducati
wide and off line, but only the No.99
high-siding out of the race.
The polesitter's crash forced all those
on the outside line to prop with Cal
Crutchlow, Danilo Petrucci and Jack
Miller all losing
ground, undoing
the latter's good
start.
Dovizioso rushed
through in the
mess to snatch
the lead, with the
Suzukis of
Andrea Iannone
and Alex Rins
beginning a race-
long squabble for
third.
The biggest
winner off the
start was Aleix
Espargaro, leaping from 13th to have
his Aprilia sixth at the end of the
opening tour.
Seventh place would prove cursed in
the early laps. Alvaro Bautista
crashed out of the place on the
second lap, handing it to Crutchlow
who in-turn would hit the deck at Turn
1 a couple of laps later.
With the mercury showing a track
temperature of 44 degrees - its
highest all weekend - the leaders were
again playing a game of tyre
conservation.
Seven riders comprised the train at
the front, Dovizioso leading Marquez,
Rins, Iannone and Dani Pedrosa -
who'd briefly swap places on Lap 4 -
Espargaro and Petrucci, with a small
gap back to Miller.
Valentino Rossi was next in ninth,
having made steady progress from
17th on the grid. Teammate Maverick
Vinales did the reverse; from 14th on

the grid he fell as far back as 19th in
the opening-lap carnage but was
picking his way forward.
One by one, Dovi and Marquez
detached the last rider from the
leading train until they alone by the
halfway point.
Would Marquez go for the win, or just
take the 20 points? The answer would
come on Lap 14.
Marquez cut inside Dovizioso at Turn
12 to snatch the lead away, a more
uncompromising move than the one
which had brought the other factory
Ducati undone on Lap 1.
But the Honda wasn't able to pull
away. Dovizioso stayed glued to
Marquez's rear tyre.
The Ducati struck at Turn 4 on Lap 16
and grabbed the lead; Marquez hit
back immediately at Turn 5 and took it
back.
Dovizioso finally made it stick at Turn
7, but their battling allowed the
Suzukis to claw back onto their tails.
That's how it remained until five laps to
go, when it all kicked off again.
Marquez cut under Dovizioso into
Turn 12 but ran wide, the pair running
side-by-side into Turn 14 - but both too
deep, allowing Iannone to rush
around them both at Turn 15 to the
lead!
The blue bike would stay ahead for
just a few hundred metres, the Ducati
and Honda both power their way back
past down the back straight.
Marquez would have another go on
t h e n e x t t o u r, b u t w a s a g a i n
immediately repassed by Dovizioso.
The race-winning move would finally
come with three laps to go.
Marquez had the rear wheel swinging
in the breeze as outbraked the Ducati
into Turn 1. Dovizioso fought back
with a bold move through Turn 4, only

to run wide and allow Marquez to ease
back ahead into Turn 5.
That would be the order they would
remain in for the rest of the race,
Marquez ekeing out a margin that
would see him claim a victory that puts
him ever closer to the 2018 title.
Iannone would join the title rivals on
the podium, edging out his Suzuki
teammate, while Pedrosa equalled
the best result of his final year in
MotoGP so far with fifth.
Espargaro finished an impressive but
lonely sixth aboard the unloved 2018
Aprilia, whiel Petrucci hold off Rossi
for seventh.
Miller slipped back to ninth in the
closing laps after a bad vibration
manifest itself mid-race, the
Australian backing off fearing it was a
tyre problem, while Vinales recovered
from his troubles on the first lap to
claim the final
spot in the top 10.

Honda's backyard at Motegi.
Only an injury or some other bizarre
happening will deprive Marquez from
a fifth MotoGP world title in just six
years.
