Evidence of the indwelling of the Holly Spirit

Rom. 8:6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and
peace,
Rom. 8:7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject
itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
Rom. 8:8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom. 8:9 ¶ However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God
dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to
Him.

How do we know if we have the Holy Spirit?

1. He brings Joy in the life of a believer

a. Rom. 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but
righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
b. Gal 5:22 Fruit is Joy
c. Believers life is joyful not sorrowful. This does not mean believers does
not sorrow or get sad. But their life as a whole is a happy and
satisfactory life.
2. He will testify about Jesus Christ
a. John 15:26 ¶ “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the
Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will
testify about Me,
b. Testify – To tell the truth. Like a witness telling the judge what he saw.
The spirit will tell believers who Jesus Christ is.
c. Therefore believers always believes about Jesus correctly.
i. Many believes in Christ but it’s a different Christ.
1. They think that He’s not God
2. That he did not ressurect
3. They think that Jesus did not die for his believers.
ii. If you have the Holy Spirit, your knowledge about Jesus Christ is
correct.
iii. Again this does not mean that believer might not believe false
things about Christ, they can. However the Holy Spirit will correct
that knowledge.
3. Gives the love of God
a. Rom. 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing
that tribulation brings about perseverance; Rom. 5:4 and perseverance,
proven character; and proven character, hope; Rom. 5:5 and hope does
not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our
hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
b. Believers will know the love of God. Not only that but they will experience
the love of God. Therefore, they will
i. 1John 4:19 We love, because He first loved us.
4. Gives Hope
a. Rom. 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
b. The Hope that the Spirit gives is a sure hope. This is not the “I hope so”
but a hope that is set to the word of God. God’s word has a lot of
promises to believers. Theses promises are sure to happen. The Holy
Spirit makes these hope know to believers therefore, they are filled with
hope.
5. Teaches believers
a. John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in
My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
that I said to you.
b. Believers know the word of God because the Holy Spirit will teach them.
i. The Holy Spirit uses people like pastors, your parents, and
teachers of the bible; to teach believer His word. Also, He helps
believers understand them and remember them.
ii. 1Cor. 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man
except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts
of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 1Cor. 2:12 Now we
have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from
God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,
6. A life obedience to God
a. Ezek. 36:27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My
statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
b. Christian Life is not perfect. However they have the Holy Spirit, they will
change. Obedience will increase and disobedience will decrease.
7. Believers will know that their Father is God.
a. Rom. 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear
again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry
out, “Abba! Father!”
b. This is not just a belief; that you believe God to be your Father. No. This
is more on relationship to God. Believers will have a Father and
son/daughter relationship with God.
8. Given spiritual gifts
a. Heb. 2:4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by
various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.
b. Eph. 4:11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and
some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, Eph. 4:12 for
the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the
body of Christ;

If you have all of these it means they all came from the Holy Spirit
- It did not come from man
- It never ever come from Satan, evil sprit
- Believer did not receive all of these by accident.
o One source and one source alone. The Holy Spirit.

Who gives the Holy Spirit? How do we receive Him?

- John 15:26 ¶ “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father,
that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
- Jesus Christ was speaking to His disciples.
o A disciple is a student, a follower, aka believer of Jesus Christ.
- He promised that He will give them the Holy Spirit.
o This is not a promise to every man in the world. Only to the disciples of
Jesus Christ.
- Who are the disciples of Jesus Christ?
o Luke 9:23 ¶ And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come
after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow
Me.
o You have to make Jesus Christ your master.
 Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is a master.
 All authority has been given to Jesus Christ.
• Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them,
saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and
on earth.
• Eph. 1:20 which He brought about in Christ, when He
raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand
in the heavenly places, Eph. 1:21 far above all rule and
authority and power and dominion, and every name that is
named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Eph. 1:22 And He put all things in subjection under His
feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
 Therefore to become a believer of Jesus Christ, to become His
follower, to become his disciple; you have to become His slave.
• A slave has no right in his relation with the master.
• A slave submits to the master, therefore they obey.
• A slave follows the master wherever the master goes.
• A slave does not complain but desires what the master’s
wants.
o Therefore a slave is someone who is completely
given his master.
o This is Jesus want to His believers.
 If you want to make Jesus Christ your Master, you must become
His slave.
 Do you want that?
 If so, repent as Jesus Commanded.
• Matt. 3:2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
 Ask Jesus Christ to receive you as His slave.
