QUARTER 2 DRAMA

Module 1

Explore Your Understanding:

In this part of the module, you will discover the interconnection among the distinct
features, elements, sources, bases and structure of Philippine drama. You will also
answer a diagnostic test to find out if you are familiar with any concepts related to
Philippine drama and to check your readiness and competence on the prerequisite skills
to the tasks at hand.

At the end of this module, you are expected to perform an original extended dialog
for a drama presentation which will be graded based on criteria presented at the latter part
of the module.

As you do the following tasks, you will be guided by the essential question “How

have prior knowledge on the topics contained in this module. Are you
ready for the test? You are indeed!

Activity 1: Think ahead – Diagnostic Test!

FIRM UP Your Understanding

This part of the module will enable you to illustrate or crystallize your knowledge of
the features, elements, sources, bases, topic structures of Philippine drama, and the
significance of various kinds of sentences, and the use of conjunctions in the production of
an extended dialog for a play presentation.

You may have all these things contained in the varied activities you are to
accomplish. You will be engaged in meaningful and challenging activities that will enrich
what you have learned.

Let‟s start the discussion!

Did you know that the word drama was coined from the Greek
word “dran” which literally means “to do” or “to act”? It was first
performed by imitating the sounds and movements of nature which
eventually become an art.

In the Philippines, the first known drama became the most

effective tool of the missionaries to propagate Christianity. They
brought in the Philippines the memories of the auto
sacramentales, which is a popular short play in Europe during
the early 13th century.

Zarzuela is a well preserved They have also included tableaus in their liturgy and
Philippine classical drama during holy week which later evolved into plays now known as
performed in Ilocos province.
panunuluyan and cenaculo. Eventually plays such as comedia,
zarzuela, duplo and karagatan were introduced.

At present, Philippine drama is not only staged in entablados

but also seen on television. In the passing of time, it has definitely
assumed varied forms and genres but the elements and features
remain the same.
Panunuluyan is a form of
procession along the village
roads to depict the birth of
Jesus Christ. 10
Lesson 1: Basic Elements and Features of Drama

Character: one of the dramatis personae (literally, the persons

of the play. Most plays contain major characters and minor
characters. The distinction between heroes (or heroines) and
villains, between good guys and bad guys, between virtue and
vice is useful in dealing with certain types of plays, but in many
modern plays.

Another common term in drama for character is “protagonist” which means the literally
means “first contestant”. The second best character is known as “euteragonist’. The
“antagonist” is the protagonist‟s principal rival in the conflict set forth in the play.

A “foil” is a character who defines certain characteristics in the protagonist. A

“confidant” provides a ready ear to which the protagonist can address certain remarks
which should be heard by the audience but not by the other characters.

Theme: The theme of a drama refers to the central idea of the play. It can either be
clearly stated through dialogue or action or can be inferred after watching the entire
performance.

Plot: The order of events occurring in a play is referred to as the plot of the drama. It is
the basic storyline that is narrated through a play. The entertainment one derives from a
play depends largely on the sequence of events that occur in the story. The logical
connection between the events and the characters, which enact the story form an
integral part of the plot of drama.

Dialog: The story of any play is taken forward by means

of the dialogue. The story is narrated to the audiences
through the dialogue written by the playwright. The
success of a drama depends hugely on the contents of
the dialogue and the quality of dialogue delivery by the
actors of the play.

Genre: A term that describes drama as grouped according to shared thematic or

structural characteristics. More known genres include tragedy, epic, and comedy.

Audience: A person who hears or sees the play. They are spectators who come as
mere guests, other artists, critics or anyone who can express opinion about the dramatic
performance.

11
Design is technically a plan that covers all materials, equipment and other details of
the dramatic performance. Under this element, the following are considered:

Theater Space: Is the approximate size of the space

for both performers and the audience. It is important to
consider the theater space in preparing for a dramatic
performance depending on how big or small the
production is.

Set Design: It is the arrangement of theatrical space or the visual

environment in which a play is performed. Its purpose is to suggest time and
place and to create the proper mood or atmosphere.

Lighting Design: illuminates the stage and the performers thus creating
mood and controlling the focus of the spectators. Stage lighting may be from
a direct source such as the sun or a lamp, or it may be indirect, employing
reflected light or general illumination.

Costume: The wardrobe worn on the performer's

body. Costume designers are concerned primarily
with clothing and accessories, but are also often
responsible for wigs, masks, and makeup.
Costumes provide information about the character
and aid in setting the tone or mood of the
production.

Makeup: Makeup functions as a mask, especially in Philippine

theater, where faces may be painted with elaborate colors and
images that exaggerate and distort facial features.

Sound and Sound Effects: Are most often used for realistic
effect but they can also assist in the creation of mood or rhythm.
Although many sounds can be recorded from actual sources,
certain sounds do not record well and seem false when played through
electronic equipment on a stage.

How are these elements and feature evident in Philippine drama today?
Come with me, let us find out together.

12
Activity 8: The World is an Apple?

Welcome to the Transfer Phase!

This part of the module will allow you to make independent applications of the
various processes (scene extension, script modification, simulation activities) you have
learned. This will enable you to do independent performance or project using varied
and complex assessment procedures and most importantly, see the connections
between tasks in this module and the real world.

Are you ready to transfer your understanding?

Activity 28: Graphophonic Cues

35
Play extension is a phrase that refers to adding scenes to a drama previously
written. This post modern practice makes a student playwright go beyond the restricting
practice of text confinement.

Be reminded of the following:

1. Choose one exciting incident in the play and plan to extend that scene for ten to
fifteen minutes.

2. Take account of the additional incident through the words spoken by characters. Do
not write descriptions and explanations.

3. Write lines for the actors to establish their characters. The previous dialogs will help
learners figure this out.

4. Always include some actions like a mock fight, a chase or even a heated argument.

5. Make sure that the extended dialogs relate well with the previous scene taken from
the original script.

Write an original dialog to extend a drama presentation.

Activity 29: DRAMULIT (Drama, Music, Literature)
