Under the guidance of

DR.G.R. MUNAVALLI,
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR,
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING,
WALCHAND COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING SANGLI.
Justification for building selection:
‘Bara quarters’ are located at backside of college ground. These quarters are allotted to staff
members of college. Although groundwater wells present there, water supply to these
quarters is not proper. Only two taps are present in each quarter along one with stand post.
Hence these area needs improvement.

Justification for source selection:

There are two groundwater wells nearby. For the pupose of minimizing cost of project,
nearest well is selected as source.

Data Acquired at the site:

1. There are 12 quarters.
2. There are only 2 taps in each quarter and one stand post outside.
3. The average number of family members was 5 persons.
4. Groundwater well is present at 50m from center of quarters.
(calculated from google map)
5. Well is about 10 meters deep.
(considering lowermost water table level in summer)
6. Wastage and leakage losses are nearly 7-8 % of total water requirement.

Assumptions for water demand calculation :

1. There are 12 quarters. Assuming 5 people living in each quarter, total no. of people
will be = 60 persons
2. The quarters is for Medium Income Group (MIG) hence water demand is 150 lpcd.
Excluding demand for potable purpose such as drinking, demand is 145 lpcd.
3. The wastage is considered to be 10% of the total water requirement.
4. Fire demand is calculated considering worst case- Four fire breakdowns in one year
Hence ,
Total water required per year
= (no. of fire breakdowns)x(no.of water jets)x(discharge through one jet)x(time of
extinguishing)
= 4 x 2 x 1100 lt/min x 60 min
= 5,28,000 lt
Hence water required per day = 1446.57 lt
Calculation of Demand:
1. Total water demand = (no.of people) x (per capita demand)
= 60 x 145 lt/day
= 8700 lt/day
2. Considering 10% loss and wastages = 8700 x 1.1 = 9570 lt/day

3. Gross demand = (non potable water demand) + (fire demand)

= 9570 + 1446.57
=11016.57 lt/day =11017 lt/day = 11.02 m3/day (approx.)

Design of OHWT (Over Head Water Tank):

 OHWT is designed for exactly same amount of gross demand considering extreme
conditions. Hence volume of ESR is equal to gross water demand.
 OHWT is circular tank placed at height of 6 meters to provide sufficient potential
head. Dimensions of tank are,
Diameter = 2.40 m
Height = 2.56 m
Height includes excess height left above full tank level.

Design of Sump (Under Ground Water Tank):

 UGWT is designed 1.5 times that of OHWT.
Volume of sump = 16.53 m3
 UGWT is a rectangular storage tank having dimensions,
Length=Width= 2.5m height= 2.4m
Height includes excess height left above full tank level.

Pumping system:
Calculations (between well to sump)

a) Rising main : (between well to sump)

Diameter of Rising main:
Volume of sump to be filled, V= 16.53 m3
Running time= 2 hours
= 7200 sec
Q= V/t= 16.53 /7200
= 0.00229 m3/s
Also, Q= A*V
A= Q/V= 0.00229/1.3 ........................... (Range of V=0.9-1.5 m/s)
= 0.00176 m2
A= (π*D2/4)
D =47.35 mm
As per available dimension of ductile iron pipe,
D = 50.00 mm (2 inch)
b) Pump Calculation :
Considering Static Head,
H = 10m
Residual Head (hR)= 2m
Pump house loss(hP)= 2m
Length of pipe = 50m (well to sump)+10 (depth of well)= 60m
hf= (10.67*L*Q1.852)/(C1.852 * D4.87)
= (10.67*60*0.002291.852)/(1201.852*0.0504.87)........(C for D.I. pipe is 120)
= 2.57 m
Minor losses (hm) = 10% *hf
= 0.1* 2.57 = 0.267 m
Total Head (HT) = hf + hp + hR + hm+H
=2.57 +2+2+0.267 +10
= 16.83 m
Power = (w*H *Q)/ῃ
= (9.81* 16.83*0.0023)/0.7
= 0.50 KW
Power in Hp = 0.50/0.746 = 0.67 hp

Calculations (between sump to OHWT)

a) Rising main : (from sump to OHWT)
Diameter of Rising main:
Volume of OHWT to be filled, V= 11.02 m3
Running time= 1 hour
= 3600 sec
Q= V/t= 11.02 /3600
= 0.00306 m3/s
Also, Q= A*V
A= Q/V= 0.00306/1.3 ........................... (Range V=0.9-1.5 m/s)
= 0.00235 m2
A= (π*D2/4)
D =54.75 mm
As per available dimension of ductile iron pipe,
D = 62.5 mm (2.5 inch)
b) Pump Calculation :
Considering Static Head,
H = 6+2.4+2.56= 10.96m
Residual Head (hR)= 2m
Pump house loss(hP)= 2m
Length of pipe = 3m (sump to tank)+ 10.96 (height)= 13.96m
hf= (10.67*L*Q1.852)/(C1.852 * D4.87)
= (10.67*13.96*0.003061.852)/(1201.852*0.06254.87)........(C for D.I. pipe is 120)
= 0.346m
Minor losses (hm) = 10% *hf
= 0.1* 0.346 = 0.0346 m
Total Head (HT) = hf + hp + hR + hm+H
=0.346 +2+2+0.0346+10.96
= 15.34 m
Power = (w*H *Q)/ῃ
= (9.81* 15.34*0.0030)/0.7
= 0.64 KW
Power in Hp = 0.64/0.746 = 0.86 hp

Peak Factor = (Maximum Demand/Avg.Demand)
