Definition of Terms

Amadeo, Cavite

- An island town in Southern part of Cavite with 4,790 hectares of land planted to coffee; the
largest land area devoted to coffee farming in the entire upland Cavite. It is known as the biggest
coffee producers in the province and is considered as the COFFEE CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES.
It is divided into 26 Barangays and belongs to a 4 th class Municipality with a total population of
37,483 as of 2013.

Excelsa (Coffea Dewerti)

A popular variety of coffee, which often gets confused with Liberica and Robusta coffee beans
due to its similar beans and taste. Excelsa contributes to 7% of coffee production around the
globe. Excelsa coffee beans are cultivated in medium altitudes and possess “teardrop” shape,
which proclaims it resemblance to Liberica. The Excelsa was recently acknowledged as the
variety of Liberica.

Robusta (Coffea canephora)

a coffee that is indigenous to Central Africa but grown in Java and elsewhere and has high
resistance to coffee rust.

Liberica

This coffee species was first discovered in Liberia, West Africa in 1843. The bean was brought to
the Philippines and planted in Lipa by the Spaniards during the Spanish colonial era in 1800s. However,
only nearly 1% of Liberica Coffee is traded in coffee trading around the world. This beautiful long-living
plant is very strong, lush with fruits and seeds proportion doubled to those of Arabica and Robusta
species.

Arabica

Represents 59% of the world’s coffee production. Arabica originated in the highlands of Ethiopia.
It is sensitive to hot and humid conditions, and grows at altitudes of 1.25-1.55 miles. Arabica grown at
higher altitudes is associated with the emergence of higher quality characteristics during roasting.

Handpickers

Workers employed to harvest coffee beans by hand.

Semi-automatic

Partially controlled but not automatic.

Vibrate
move or cause to move continuously and rapidly to and fro.

Reservoir

a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply.

Operator

a person who operates equipment or a machine.

Portable

able to be easily carried or moved, especially because of being a lighter and smaller version than
usual.

Suction

the act or process of exerting a force upon a solid, liquid, or gaseous body by reason of reduced
air pressure over part of its surface.

Silo

a tower or pit on a farm used to store grain.

Plantation

an estate on which crops such as coffee, sugar, and tobacco are cultivated by resident labor.

Topography

the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area.

Terrain

the physical features of a tract of land.

Mechanization

to operate or perform by or as if by machinery.

Nursery
Diffused Light

is the reflection of light or other waves or particles from a surface such that a ray incident on the
surface is scattered at many angles rather than at just one angle as in the case of specular reflection.

Seedling Nursery

a nursery is a place where young plants and trees are cultivated and grown.

PLC

is a ruggedized computer used for industrial automation. The PLC receives information from
connected sensors or input devices, processes the data, and triggers outputs based on pre-programmed
parameters.
