Comments on road geometrics ( plan & profile)

MAIN LINE

Ref: drg no. 0001 :

1) horizontal curve details including design speed of main line is not mentioned
2) As per IRC 92, minimum width of shoulder in ramp should be 2m of which at least 1m should
be paved shoulder. In this case 1.5m for paved shoulder and 0.5m for crash barrier should
be provided
3) As per IRC 92, acceleration & deceleration lane in ramp terminals should be provided

Ref: drg no. 0002 :

4) horizontal curve details including design speed of main line is not mentioned
5) layout details of toll plaza is not mentioned.

Ref: drg no. 0003 :

6) Deceleration lane has been designed for desirable length but acceleration lane has been
designed for minimum length (180m). As a new project and for traffic safety acceleration
lane should also be designed for DESIRABLE (250m) length.
7) As per IRC 92, minimum width of shoulder in ramp should be 2m of which at least 1m should
be paved shoulder. In this case 1.5m for paved shoulder and 0.5m for crash barrier should
be provided

Ref: drg no. 0005 :

8) Length of acceleration & deceleration lane should be as per IRC 92.

9) As per IRC 92, minimum width of shoulder in ramp should be 2m of which at least 1m should
be paved shoulder. In this case 1.5m for paved shoulder and 0.5m for crash barrier should
be provided
10) Stay back dimension is 60m 0r 50m ?? please see drg. No 0004 & 0006

Ref: drg no. 0008 :

11) Length of acceleration & deceleration lane should be as per IRC 92.

Ref: drg no. 0018 :

12) Length of vertical curve cannot be checked as designed speed is not known.
13) As per IRC-SP-87, grade of main line grade separated structure approach should not be more
than 2.5%
14) From horizontal alignment of road profile, it seems that loop has been designed for
compound curve with three different radius but it is not shown in drawing no 0001.
15) Specify point of finish road level ( centre/median edge/outer edge)
Ref: drg no. 0019 :

16) From road profile table, it seems that horizontal curve has been designed without transition.
IRC-SP 84,IRC-SP-87 doesn’t permit curve without transition.
However, As per AASHTO 2004, horizontal curve can be designed without transition with
super elevation application rate 1/3rd inside curve and 2/3rd outside curve. Generally this
arrangement is recommended for low speed urban roads like street, collector and sub-
arterials. For arterial( NH) and expressway where designed speed is more than 80kmph,
horizontal curve with transition is recommended. In this case super elevation run off and run
out needs to be check since project is 8-lane configuration and rate of super elevation is
depends upon width of carriageway. Therefore curve details with design speed is required.

CONNECTORS

Ref: drg no. 0010 : Bandra connector

17) horizontal curve details including design speed is not mentioned

Ref: drg no. 0027 : Bandra connector

18) In road profile of ramp-2 , super elevation run off and run out is not shown. Accordingly
profile should be shown up to normal camber achieved.
19) Value of super elevation can be checked if design speed of main line is available. Considering
design speed of main line 80kmph at start of project, super elevation of ramp 2 should be
4.5%.it should not be 7%
20) Camber at end of ramp-2 should be match with camber of main line.

Ref: drg no. 0028 &29 : Bandra connector

21) In plan only one radius of 166m is shown but in profile 5 curves of various are shown.
22) Sea bed levels are not shown.
23) Designed speed of ramp to be specified for suitability of geometric (super elevation, vertical
curve) can be checked.
24) At start of ramp-3, full super elevation has been shown. super elevation run off and run out
is not shown. Accordingly profile should be adjusted up to normal camber achieved.
25) Observation for ramp 4 are same as for ramp-3

Note: 1) Observation made for bandra connector are almost typical for other connectors
as well.
2) Observations on traffic signages, project facilities ( bus bays, toll plaza etc), HTS
shall be given based on availability of details
