Specification for Performance of Finish Paints on

John Deere Parts and Products

— NOT FOR NEW DESIGN —

JDM F11 shall not be used for new design and shall not be applied to part drawings approved after
30 June 2010.

Use JDM F17 or JDM F20 to specify performance requirements for paints adopted after 30 June 2010.

The edition of JDM F11 preceding its classification as "Not for New Design" is provided on the following
pages for information to assist in interpreting JDM F11 designations that appear on part drawings. Part
drawings that reference JDM F11 designations should be revised to reference JDM F17 or JDM F20
designations when other changes are made to the drawing.

See JDM F17X3 for the relationship of JDM F11 paint performance classes and paint process
qualifications to JDM F17 and JDM F20.

Part dimensions shown on part drawings where JDM F11 is specified shall apply before painting.

The "supersedes" date shown below is the date of the edition of JDM F11 preceding its classification as
"Not for New Design".

JDM F11
Quality Matrix for Final Coat Paints

1. SCOPE

JDM F11 defines basic quality requirements for final coat paints used on John Deere products. It applies
equally to one–coat and two–coat applications: that is, to top coat alone or to top coat–primer
combinations, depending on the paint system. JDM F11 does not specify wet paint properties or chemical
composition. Quality requirements for primers are covered in JDM F12.

Note 1 All paint formulations shall be lead–free.

2. DESIGNATIONS

Paint quality requirements are designated by a sequential line call–out indicating the color and quality class.
For example, JDM F11TR4 indicates a medium gloss black top coat of Quality Class 4. If the requirements of
Class 4 are modified or if additional properties are specified, an “X” is added to the line call out (for example,
JDM F11TR4X). Quality designations should appear on new part drawings.

3. APPLICATION EXAMPLES

3.1 JDM F11TR4. This call–out may be analyzed in three parts. First, the standard designation
(JDM F11) indicates a top coat paint. Second, the color is indicated per JDM F9. In this case, “TR”
indicates medium gloss black because F9TR is the color designation for medium gloss black per JDM F9.
Third, property requirements are indicated by a numeral that references the quality class, as defined in
JDM F11, Table 1.

3.2 JDM F11TR4X. This call–out is analogous to the example in Clause 3.1, except that the “X” indicates
either that the requirements of Quality Class 4 are modified or that some additional properties are specified.
For example, the “X” may mean that a salt spray resistance of 300 hours is required even though 240 hours
is specified for Quality Class 4. These modified or additional properties must be detailed on the part
drawing.

JDQ 1 Test Panels. Tests shall be performed on test panels as appropriate to the application. If the
substrate is steel, then panels per JDQ 1A, 1B and/or 1C are tested. If the substrate is aluminum,
then panels per JDQ 1D are tested. If the substrate is plastic, then panels per JDQ 1E are tested.
Refer to JDQ 1 for descriptions of test specimens and a matrix showing the applicability of different
specimens to the evaluation of paint materials and processes.
Paint System Tests. Tests to assure capability and performance of the complete paint system
(pretreatment, material, application method, curing, etc.) may be conducted using production parts or
other specified test specimens per JDQ 1Z. Such tests are in addition to those using test panels as
shown in Table 1. Details shall be specified by the design control or other appropriate Deere unit.
JDM F9KE Colors. Paints of color JDM F9KE may be specified as low, medium, or high gloss. If
gloss is not specified, high gloss shall be assumed.
Color. Visual color match shall pass if there is no significant difference in color between the painted
test specimen and the JDM F9 primary color standard when evaluated per JDQ 14 by the purchasing
Deere unit. Visual color match requirements are primary. Instrumental color match requirements are
for quality control.
Chemical Resistance. Chemical resistance shall pass if the paint film does not not dissolve, soften,
blister, flake off, discolor, fade, or otherwise deteriorate when subjected to the specified test
conditions from JDQ 138 and/or JDQ 142.
Additional or Modified Requirements. Additional or modified requirements may be specified on the
part drawing. The existence of such requirements shall be noted by an “X” in the last position of the
line call–out of paint quality. Details, including test specimens and procedures, shall be specified by
the design control unit.
