Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Water Cycle

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th

Content Standard Addressed: S4E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to demonstrate the
water cycle. a. Plan and carry out investigations to observe the flow of energy in water as it changes states
from solid (ice) to liquid (water) to gas (water vapor) and changes from gas to liquid to solid. b. Develop
models to illustrate multiple pathways water may take during the water cycle (evaporation, condensation,
and precipitation). (Clarification statement: Students should understand that the water cycle does not follow
a single pathway.)

Technology Standard Addressed:

2b. Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.

Selected Technology Tool:

Computer
Powerpoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This will support all learners in a number of ways such as;
 Multiple language
 Closed Captioning
 The video format allows students to review content at any time
 Assessable from home

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the study of the water cycle using a video of the cycle from youtube.com. The
teacher will then inform the students that they will be creating a powerpoint to show their understanding of
the cycle of water. After watching the video, as a class, we will talk about the video and create a word bank
and the definitions.
As a class, everyone will create a large diagram on the board on what the water cycle is. We will go over the
four areas that cover the water cylce, evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. As we define
these terms and talk about the cycle, we as a class will create a mini powerpoint. After the, as independent
work, each student will create a powerpoint their own way. Once students are finished, students will present
their work to the class, then we will print their work off and hang it in the hallway.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
This is an activity that I feel very strongly about. Students have the opportunity to listen, speak, and have a
choice on how they want to create their powerpoint as well as present their findings. This activity could be
done after the students have spent a day learning about the cycle. This would be a very appropriate activity to
do to finish up a small unit. Because the students get to create and explore powerpoint, this bumps up the
LoTi level to a 4. This activity can also be accessed at home as well as involve the teacher reading off each
slide for those students who might have a disability.
