1. Both the input voltage and output voltage of UPS are high
voltage. Direct contact or contact with high voltage and mains
through damp object will cause vital danger.
2. The UPS has multiple power supplies. Switch off AC power and
DC power before maintenance. Even if all power supplies are
switched off, the internal capacitance of UPS will have charge on
it. So, wait for the release of charge more than 10 minutes
before dismantling the cabinets.
It is recommended to check the power input of UPS and the
internal parts that may be contacted with a voltmeter before
maintenance, to ensure that all power supplies are switched off
and in the safe state.
3. Do not wear any conductive object like watch, hand chain,

TABLE 9 OPERATION MODE DESCRIPTION

Operation Mode Description

LINE MODE is a line mode type.

When the following conditions are satisfied, the UPS works in
LINE MODE:
1. No UPS failure;
2. The UPS AC input voltage is within the allowed range;
LINE MODE 3. The UPS input frequency is within the phase-locked range;
4. No overload.
In the LINE MODE, the UPS provides high-quality AC power
through rectifier and inverter and adjusts the output
frequency according to the mains frequency; meanwhile, the
UPS charges batteries through the charger.

18 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 3 - Operations Description

Operation Mode Description

LINE MODE (Asyn) is a line mode type.

When all the following conditions are ready, the UPS works in
LINE MODE (Asyn):
1. No UPS failure;
2. The UPS AC input voltage is within the allowed range;
LINE MODE (Asyn) 3. The UPS input frequency is beyond the phase-locked range
but within the input frequency range;
4. No overload.
In the LINE MODE (Asyn), the UPS provides high-quality AC
power through rectifier and inverter and keeps the output
frequency to 50 Hz/60 Hz ± 0.1 Hz; meanwhile, the UPS
charges batteries through the charger.

In case of mains input failure, the UPS automatically switches

to the battery mode. In this mode, batteries power the load
through the inverter, and the buzzer rings intermittently.
1. In battery mode, if AC input recovers and the battery
voltage is not too low, the UPS will switch to the line mode.
2. If the battery voltage is too low, the LCD displays the
alarm information and the UPS generates visual/audible
alarm. If the mains supply does not recover in a short time
BATTERY MODE and if battery energy drops to the threshold, the UPS
automatically shut down to prevent battery from over-
discharge.
3. If the mains supply recovers and the voltage is not less
than 170 V, the UPS will automatically start up; the UPS does
not start up if the voltage is less than 170 V.
Note: In battery mode, the UPS operating time depends on
the configured battery capacity. Incomplete charge reduces
the operating time.

In case of overload, over-temperature or inverter fault, the

UPS switches to the bypass mode if the bypass voltage is
within the allowed range, If the voltage exceeds the allowed
BYPASS MODE range, the UPS cut off the input and has no output.

Setting Sync F. Range

2 Sync F. Range allows the user to set the input phase-locked
frequency range. With the input/output frequency of 50 Hz as
example, when 2 Sync F. Range is set to ±2 Hz, the input phase-
locked frequency range is (50 ± 2) Hz.

ƒ When the input frequency is within the range (50 ± 5) Hz, the
system compares bypass input frequency with phase-locked
range, and determines the UPS operation mode accordingly.
¾ If the bypass input frequency is within the phase-locked
range (50 ± 2) Hz, the UPS works in line mode
(synchronous), and the output frequency is the same with
bypass input frequency.
¾ If the bypass input frequency is over the phase-locked range
(50 ± 2) Hz but below (50±5) Hz then, the UPS works in the
line mode (asynchronous), and the output frequency is
constantly (50 ± 0.1) Hz even if the bypass input frequency
changes.
ƒ When the input frequency is over the range (50 ± 5) Hz, the
UPS switches to the battery mode.

To set Synchronous frequency range:

1. Select Parameter Set > 1 Parameter set > 2 Sync F. Range,
as shown in Figure 23.

Routine Maintenance requirements

Proper maintenance is very important to enable the UPS to work
normally and extends the equipment life span.

1. Keep the equipment room free from dust.

2. Monthly check the system operating state. Deal with
Troubleshooting in case of any fault or alarm.
3. Monthly check the fan. Make sure that the fan is not blocked and
the UPS is provided with good ventilation. In case of fan failure,
troubleshoot it in time.
4. Quarterly check whether the input and output cables are
connected properly. In case of cable damage, replace it in time.
5. Yearly check whether all the air switches can be flexibly closed
and opened and check the state of the switches.
(Closing/opening the air switches may affect the system
operation.)
6. Check batteries periodically (Refer to the following section
“Battery Maintenance”).

46 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 5 - Maintenance

Battery Maintenance
Normally, new battery life span ranges from three to five years. It
is gradually affected by factors such as environment, battery model
and proper/improper operation.

Routine Maintenance
The following items only serve as supplement to the battery manuals.

1. Quarterly start up the UPS and charge them over 24 hours if the
batteries are not used for long.
2. Before using the UPS, start it up and charge batteries for 24
hours. During charging, the UPS can operate. But battery backup
time will be less than the rated value if mains power fails during
charging.
3. Discharge and then recharge batteries once in every four to six
months. For standard configuration UPS type, charge batteries at
least 24 hours each time.
Refer to the “Battery Maintenance” section for more details.
4. In high temperature area, discharge and then recharge batteries
once bimonthly. For standard configuration UPS type, charge
batteries for at least 24 hours.
5. Periodically check the battery charger. Make sure that batteries
are not over-charged or not completely charged for long. Make
sure that they are not over-discharged. Recharge batteries in
time (recommended within 24 hours) after discharge. Never
discharge any battery before charging it completely; otherwise,
battery capacity will be reduce and even battery will be damaged.
6. When the UPS is not in use for long, discharge and recharge
batteries periodically to prevent battery from being damaged
due to self discharge.
7. yearly check whether battery cables are reliably connected.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 47

ZXUPS S606/S610 (V1.0) User Manual

8. For long-duration UPS, measure and record the parameters

quarterly: single battery voltage, battery pack voltage and
environment temperature. Adjust them if needed. Measure each
battery voltage after complete charge. Single battery voltage
should approximate each other; otherwise, replace all the
batteries in the battery pack with new ones of the same model
and same capacity.
9. Use a duster cloth and water to clean battery cover. Never use
any oil or organic solvent, such as petrol and thinner.

Precautions

Warning:
Only qualified personnels are allowed to replace batteries.

The following precautions should be taken when replacing batteries:

1. Never put any battery into fire to avoid explosion.

2. Never dismantle any battery, for there are heavy metal and acid
inside a battery and electrolyte is harmful to human skin and
eyes.
3. Please properly handle used storage batteries according to
related requirements.
4. Replace the whole set of batteries of the same model, of the
same life span and from the same manufacturer.
5. Dangerous voltage may exist between battery polarity and the
ground; therefore measure the voltage before replacing battery.

Emergency Handling
The UPS generates an alarm in case of any fault. If the fault affects
the UPS operations/ the output voltage, it will switch to the bypass
mode and the bypass will power the load.

In case of emergencies such as smoke, fire or high sound, press the

button (on the panel) in time and cut off all the external powers
(included the AC INPUT switch and external battery rack switch)

Solution to Power Failure

Power failure may occur when the UPS is operating. If power failure
time is less than the battery backup time, the battery rack powers
the load. It is recommended to start up generator if power failure
time is too long or if the cause is unknown.

ZXUPS S606/S610 have one mains input. With generator configured,

the switching between mains and generator should be performed
outside the UPS before the AC supply is input.

Follow the instructions below for starting up and shutting down the
generator:

To start up the generator:

It is recommended to first start up the generator and then let it
power the UPS after it works stably (the process takes more than
two minutes), otherwise the generator may affect the UPS start-up.

To shut down the generator:

Stop the generator from powering the UPS, and then shut down the
generator.

AC Over/Under-Voltage Protection
The UPS switches automatically to the bypass mode when the AC
input voltage is over the upper limit, or when the AC input voltage
and the capacity are below the lower limit. In each of these cases,
the battery powers the load through the inverter. There is no need
to perform any operation.

Operating Principles

This section details the operating principles for Single UPS system
and for dual hot backup UPS system.

Single UPS Operating Principles

ZXUPS S606/S610 is an online system. The output is sine waveform.
ZXUPS S606/S610 has automatic bypass and maintenance bypass,
uses double conversion technology and DSP control technology,
which enable the UPS to provide high-quality power.

The operating principles are shown in Figure 49.

interface
Control units

1. Mains power passes through EMI filter and surge suppression

part into the PFC part.
2. When the mains power meets the requirements, the PFC
converts the AC power into stable DC power. The inverter
converts the DC power to high-quality sine waveform power of
50 Hz/60 Hz. Meanwhile, the charger charges battery.
3. In case of abnormal mains power (voltage over-threshold or
frequency over-threshold), the UPS switches to the battery mode.
The power flows from battery, through BOOST part and inverter,
and the inverter converts it to high-quality sine wave of 50
Hz/60 Hz; the AC power is provided to the load through a control
switch.
The UPS will not work in battery mode until the battery voltage
drops to the threshold or the mains recover. When the mains
recover, the UPS monitors the mains power and switches to line
mode after the UPS keeps synchronous with the mains frequency.
4. If problems such as overload, over-temperature, faulty inverter,
and if the bypass voltage is within the required range, the UPS
switches to the bypass mode uninterruptedly.
5. The programs in MCU and DSP control the UPS operations, as
mentioned above.

Appendix B - Operating Principles

Dual hot backup UPS Operating

Principles
To provide high reliability of the system, two UPS can be combined
to form a dual hot backup system.
1. When the system is working normally, the master UPS powers
the load (the route is illustrated by the straight line), the slave
UPS is in idle mode. The mains supply is taken as an example,
when operating normally, the working principle of the dual hot
backup system is as shown in Figure 50.

Calculation of Load Capacity

Before starting up the UPS with load, please calculate the load
capacity according to the following methods:

1. Check the nameplate of a load for the rated capacity (VA). If the
rated capacity is marked as W, convert it into VA according to
the following formula:
Apparent power (VA) = Active power (W) ÷ output power factor
2. The sum of the rated capacity (VA) of all the loads should be less
than the rated output capacity of the UPS. Calculate the
maximum number (n) of the loads of the UPS using the following
formula:

n
∑Pi P
i=1
Here, P is the UPS output capacity (VA) and Pi is the rated
capacity (VA) of Load i.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 67

ZXUPS S606/S610 (V1.0) User Manual

The following is an example of load capacity calculation.

One ZXUPS S606 is installed on site, its rated output capacity is

6000 VA. Meanwhile, loads with the following rated capacity are
equipped on site:

Load Rated capacity Load Rated capacity

Computer 220 V/1.5 A (330 VA) 14" monitor 70 W

Printer 220 V/1.0 A (220 VA) - -

1. Total load capacity = 330 VA + 220 VA + (70/0.7) VA = 650 VA

2. 650 VA × n ≤ 6000 VA
n ≤ 6000 VA ÷ 650 VA ≈ 9
Therefore, one ZXUPS S606 can bear at most nine sets of the
computer equipment mentioned above.
3. With the surge upon startup and life span of the UPS considered,
it is recommended that the optimal total load capacity should be
about 70% of the rated UPS output power.
6000 VA × 70% ÷ 650 VA ≈ 6
Optimal configuration: One ZXUPS S606 bears at most six sets
of the computer equipment mentioned above.
