Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Narrative PowerPoints is an excellent resource to use to teach all students. The Narration helps
students that are an auditory learner, the text also helps students with auditory disabilities, students
can read the words as well as see the corresponding picture. A Narrative PowerPoint is also a fun way
to get students engaged in the activity.

Lesson idea implementation:

In the start of the Lesson I will have the students first sing the Alphabet song. After singing the
song I will pull up the MP4 version of “Animals of Africa from A-Z” and allow the class to watch the
Narrative version. Then as a class we will discuss the Animals of the book by taking about the names
of the Animals. Why do we think E is for Elephant?

After we have discussed the book in detail the students will then write a 2-3 sentence story with
guidance about which animal in the African Animals from A-Z that they liked the most and why. I
will then have the students draw a picture of their animal below their story. After the students have
completed their story and picture I will ask the students to discuss why they picked that animal? Is it
because that animal starts with the same letter as your name? What made you like that animal?
Reflective Practice:

I feel the activities I picked will help the students with their alphabet, hearing of sounds such as A
stands for Africa, along with learning writing skills, and art skills by using their creativity to draw
their animal. I could further my student’s knowledge by allowing my students to get in groups of 3-4
and working together to design a PowerPoint MP4 movie about a specific African Animal. The
students could put the name of their Animal, what it eats, what region of Africa does it live in. I
would then have the students present (play) their movie in front of the class. This extension activity
would be teacher directed.
