Organization Method : Topical

Topic : “GUI: Computing Made Easy”

General Purpose : To inform

Specific Purpose : To inform my audience about the significant impacts of

GUI on enterprises and individuals.

Central Idea : The introduction of GUI has led enterprises and

ordinary people adaptation to computers faster.

INTRODUCTION:

I. Computers has long existed as a part of human history for almost three and a half centuries.

II. The revolution of technology has led to many discoveries and improvement of the computing

world, making computers as what we see it today.

III. But the most significant leap into the virtual world only started about 4 decades ago.

IV. Back in the day where computing was only accessible by mastering binary codes on index

card and text commands few years later, GUI emerged from the dream of Douglas Engelbart,

where he visioned mouse driven graphical user interface during 1960s.

V. Thanks to devoted engineers and programmers over the years, computing with GUI nowadays

has been been providing advantages for both enterprises and end-users like ourselves.

VI. Today, I will share these advantages with you.

(Transitions: We shall begin with GUI’s advantages on enterprises)

BODY:

I. Enterprises enjoy many advantages from GUI

A. Less skills required helps enterprises to reduce the spending on workforce.

1. Well-constructed GUI enables almost everybody to use computer, allowing

companies to hire people even with very basic computer knowledge.

2. Companies can save cost on training of lesser number of staff to be experts as

well as saving the payment cost for computer experts.

B. With GUI, workers can do many works at a time with multitasking feature

1. Using windows, numbers of works can be viewed, controlled and manipulated at a

time.

2. Multitasking increases company’s productivity by producing more results in

shorter time.

3. Chris Adam, in his article Benefits of Graphical User Interface, says that he once

saw a man born before 1940 working to piece a 40 pages user’s manual. The man

took a couple of month working with a paper of scissors, one bottle of glue and a

typewriter before handed it to a graphic artist to be digitized it neatly in two days.

C. GUI helps to reduce cognitive load of users, thus lead to a more healthy working style.

1. According to Chris Adam, as he mentions the Cognitive Load theory, the

implementation of GUI helps to prevent users from experiencing cognitive

overload or overloading information, that pushes our short-term memory to the

limit.

2. Intense work requirements of todays scenario added with time constraint may

cause anxiety and many other negative impact on health if the complexity of text

commands is still preferred over the simplicity of the seamless GUI.

(Transition: If GUI enables enterprises works to be done faster and efficiently, GUI has more to

than spreadsheets to thrill common people as end-users)

II. Ordinary people enjoy digital experience through GUI at home.

A. Everyday work and personal matters can be enhanced digitally

1. Word processors replaced typewriters completely through their features and the

ability to correct mistakes instantly.

2. Students has lesser time consumption and greater advantages of working with

their school projects, homework and presentations.

3. Sounds, photos, and videos of personal collection can be manipulated safely and

easily.

4. GUI allows ordinary people to maximize the uses of computers even with with

the smallest feature like calendar or notepad.

B. Without GUI, ordinary people would be troubled with mistakes of text commands

everyday.

1. Memorizing and working with text commands is a very tough job and not

everybody can master the skill.

2. Mistakes by working with text commands may lead to dysfunctional working

system or complete file lost.

CONCLUSION:

I. As we have seen, the adaptation of GUI into the computing world has made a very significant

impact to computer users when most of us are not even aware of it.

A. Enterprises all over the globe can now operate in greater productivity and capable to

compete with millions of other enterprises.

B. Ordinary people nowadays have greater access to computing, from making their lives

easier to starting their own business.

II. As technology never stops to evolve, we might see a more exciting level of GUI in the future.
