Press Release
'Can women have it all' is one of the big
debates of the modern age and now, we
find that this is an issue not only for humans, but for birds and other animals as
well. While the increasing number of 'househusbands' might be a new development
for humans, it is a key feature of family life in many other species. This is one of
the conclusions of new findings in parental care research, reviewed in a thematic
issue of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions B entitled Conflict and
Cooperation in Parental Care, which shows that family life is rife with conflict and is
an exciting battlefield between the sexes. In-family conflicts, using diverse
techniques including phylogenetic reconstructons, mathematical models and
experiments in a wide variety of organisms, are explored in this three-part review.
First, the research focuses on a review of current thinking about the origins of
parental care and outlines the course of evolution from one form of care to another.
Section two explores factors thought to influence parental behaviour in
contemporary populations and investigates whether sexual selection drives parental
care or vice versa, while section three looks at how certainty of paternity affects
parental effort. The final section reviews evidence of parentally-biased care for
different offspring and concludes that such evidence is not strong in taxa such as
birds.
The complete issue brings together a unique collection of reviews and original
research that will provide a benchmark for future research in the evolution of
