ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY

NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : MITHAPUR, GUJARAT STATE

(A) ABOUT THE CITY :

(I) INTRODUCTION :
Mithapur Township is located between Dwarka and Okha. It is about 20 kms from Dwarka and
10 kms from Okha. The township comes under Devbhumi Dwarka District of Gujarat State. The
approximate area is 2.8 Sq. km. The average elevation is 07 meter.

The Mithapur story began in 1939, when the Tatas took over the Okha Salt Works.
Okhamandal, the region where Mithapur is situated, was an undeveloped and desolate place
where many kingdoms and civilisations had thrived in the past. Mithapur, privately owned by
Tata Chemicals, is part of the 5,398-acres of freehold land obtained in the 1930s from the
government of the erstwhile princely state of Baroda.

(II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL :

POPULATION :
As per 2001 census the population of Mithapur was 13,558.
Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mithapur has an average literacy rate
of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is
71%. In Mithapur, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

ECONOMY :
Mithapur has a majority of middle/lower class and so is the economy. The economy of Mithapur
is mostly dependent on The Tata Chemicals Ltd and comprising the employees, their families,
teachers and merchants. All other economic activity also thrive on the Company.

INDUSTRY :
The only major industry is Tata Chemicals Ltd. It has a self-contained arrangements and facilities
of its own for their employees within its complex including residential areas, hospitals, schools,
shopping complex, recreation club, playgrounds etc. Installed capacity of The Tata Chemicals is
875,000 tpa – about 34 % of the country’s capacity. Products manufactured are- Chemicals:
Soda ash, chloro-caustic group, marine chemicals, cement, Consumer products like Salt, Cooking
Soda.

TOURISM POTENTIAL :
The beach at Mithapur is famous for its peaceful, hygienic and pure natural surroundings and
has oceanic climate. However, due to lack of appropriate connectivity and tourist infrastructure
the beach could not be exploited for tourist attraction till date. The beach is a “No-Plastic Zone”,
due to an initiative taken by M/s Tata Chemicals to protect the marine life. This has a potential
to enhance tourism but for lack of infrastructure.
