Your first test taken during pregnancy is likely a home pregnancy test.

That little urine collector

is testing for a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, or hCG. Home pregnancy
tests, depending on brand and whether they are ‘early detection’ tests, register a positive test
with anywhere from 6.2-50 mIU/ml of hCG. Your hCG levels typically double every 48 hours for
a singleton pregnancy, more for multiple babies.

Whether you’ve taken an at home pregnancy test, or you simply know your body so well that
you just know that you’re pregnant, one thing everyone wants to know about is testing. This post
will cover the first two tests offered by your OB/GYN or Midwife… B.R.A.I.N style.

First, I think it’s important to define some terms. Many of the tests offered during pregnancy are
screenings. Screenings are performed to help determine the likelihood of a condition existing. If
screenings show there is a likelihood, then further testing can be done, diagnostic testing, to
help determine with certainty whether or not there is an existing condition.

To recap:
Screening: What are the chances?
Diagnostic: A more precise answer

Moving along…. The following lab tests are offered at the first prenatal visit with an OB/GYN or
hospital based Midwife, often called a ‘prenatal panel’.

Ask you provider about the tests offered at the first prenatal appointment, as they may vary from
the most common ones listed here. Ask questions about each and what the possible results
mean for you, your baby, and how your pregnancy is managed. If you’re uncomfortable with the
responses, or need more time to decide, ask if you can wait until your next visit to decide. Your
time and experiences at your appointments are both valuable and important. Feeling
comfortable to ask questions and communicate freely about your needs is critical to feeling safe
and informed about your care. You have the right to ask questions and the right to say ‘No’ to
any test. You can always change providers if you are not connecting the way you had hoped.
