Maximum Demand, Diversity and Load

Listing
An installation can have many electrical equipment
connected but it is unlikely that all the installed load will be
turned on to FULL power at the SAME TIME.
Hence, the incoming electrical supply need not be sized to
the Installed load, rather to the Maximum Demand (MD) of
the installation
MD = Highest expected simultaneous load current
= Sum of Installed Load x Diversity Factor
Diversity Factor usually < 1 and based on experience and
information obtained. 18
LV Typical Designs – Lee CW

Rule of Thumb
Diversity Factors and Design Criteria
Types of circuits Diversity Allowance/Design Criteria
Lighting Circuits 80%
Flourescent Lights – x 1.8 to account for ballast loss
13A S/S/O 2A for each point
15A S/S/O 50% of rated current
Same type of fixed 100% full load current for largest circuit,
equipment the rest 50%
Design power factor 0.85
Efficiency x power factor 0.7 ( for motor)
If conditions unknown Assume CaCgCi = 0.8

Example on Maximum Demand

A double storey terrace house with 230V single-

phase incoming supply has the following loads:
– 18 nos. 1x36W flourescent lighting points
– 2 nos. ceiling fans
– 18 nos.13A S/S/O
– 1 nos. 3kW instantaneous water heater
– 1 nos. 15A S/S/O for window air-con
– 1 nos. 15A S/S/O for oven
Make a load list and assess the maximum demand
for the house.Allow 10% for future expansion. 21
