Honors Personal Finance Syllabus

Course Description

Personal Finance is a half credit course that is designed to help students


develop their abilities to make wise consumer decisions by recognizing,
understanding, and comparing the alternatives facing them as
consumers. Budgeting, purchasing decisions, consumer credit, banking
services, investing, life, auto, and property insurance, income taxes and
housing are some of the topics covered.

Honors Designation

Honors courses offer scaffolded learning opportunities for students to develop


critical skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in a more rigorous and
reflective academic setting. Students are empowered to perform at higher
levels as they engage in the following: analyzing historical documents and
supplementary readings, working in the context of thematically categorized
information, becoming proficient in note-taking, participating in Socratic
seminars/discussions, emphasizing free-response and document-based
writing, contrasting opposing viewpoints, solving problems, etc. Students will
develop and demonstrate their skills through participating in capstone and/or
extended research-based paper/project (e.g., history fair, projects for
competitive evaluation, investment portfolio contests, or other teacher-directed
projects).

This course will include the following honors components:

* Extended reading assignments that connect with the specified curriculum.

* Projects that apply course curriculum to relevant or real-world situations.

* Writing assignments that demonstrate a variety of modes, purposes, and


styles.

* Integration of appropriate technology into the course of study.


* And extensive opportunities of problem solving, experiences through
imagination, critical analysis, and application

Expectations
Students will be expected to meet all of the course goals and be able to
demonstrate their understanding of the underlying concepts. The
instructional strategies will include small and large group discussion,
lecture, role play, research reports, presentations and problem-based
learning activities used to integrate process skills such as decision making,
problem solving, and critical thinking.

Conduct: The academic misconduct policy of the school will be followed in


this course. Please refer to the Student Code of Behavior and Discipline
book for specifics.

Absence/Tardiness Policy: Students should refer to the Student Code of


Behavior and Discipline

Grading System

 Grades will be based on a point system. Every assignment, test, and


project will count for 100 points instead of each category weighing a
certain percentage. The final exam is worth 25% of the final grade.
 Bell work and WOD will be assigned at the beginning of the period on
most days.
 Points are earned via a variety of assignments including class work,
quizzes, projects, homework, and tests.

 For Assignments that cannot be made up students should meet with


me for alternative assignments. This will only be considered if
excused absence is given.
 Tests and quizzes will be given over most chapters covered.
 It is the responsibility of the student to make up work missed when
absent, late work must be made up within 5 days and is subject to
loss of points.

Financial Responsibility and Personal Decision Making
Education, Careers, and Income
Planning and Money Management
Credit and Debt
Risk Management
Saving and Investing

Classroom Rules:
1. ALL CELL PHONES WILL BE PLACED IN THE CADDY AS YOU
PICK UP YOUR FOLDER (no ear buds or cell phones)
A. 1st Offense: If you do not place your phone in that pocket
and you are caught with one you will be asked to put it on
my desk and a parent will be called.
B. 2nd Offense: You will be sent to an administrator
2. Positive language only
3. Respect yourself, me, and your classmates
4. Come to class prepared (pencil and paper)
5. No Food or drinks in the classroom
6. Do not speak while someone is speaking. Raise your hand and
wait to be called on.
7. Sit up straight (No laying your head down at any time).

Grading Scale
A=93-100%
B=85-90%
C=76-84%
D=70-75%
F=69 and below (failing grade)
