Instructions for candidates: -

1. All questions are compulsory
2. The number of marks carried by each question is indicated against each.
3. Assume suitable data, if necessary, and indicate the same clearly.
4. Neat sketches to be drawn, wherever required.
5. You have to enter your Roll Number and Name on the question paper in the space provided above.

Q.1.a). Define newtons law of viscosity? Explain surface tension with help of a neat sketch. (Knowledge +
Comprehension) (Unit – I)

(5+5)

b). A flat plate of area 2.5 x 106 mm2 is pulled with a speed of 0.8 m/s to another plate located at a distance of
0.30mm from it. Find the force and power required to maintain this speed if fluid separating them has a
viscosity of 1.3 poise. (Analysis) (Unit – I) (10)

Or
a). Find surface tension in a soap bubble of 40cm diameter when bubble pressure is 2.5 N/m2?
(Analysis) (Unit – I) (10)

b). Calculate capillary rise in a glass tube of 2.5mm diameter when immersed vertically in a (a) water (b)
Mercury. Take surface tensions of 0.0725N/m for water and 0.52Nm for mercury. The specific gravity for
mercury is 13.6 and angle of contact is 130 degrees. (Application) (Unit-I) (10)

2.(a) Define total pressure, center of pressure ? (Knowledge) (Unit-II) (5)

(b) Determine total pressure and center of pressure for a rectangular body with width and depth of 3.5m and
6.5m respectively. The body is inclined at 35 degree to horizontal. Determine total pressure and center of
pressure for the case a) when top corner of the body coincides with surface of water, case b) Top corner of the
body is at a vertical distance of 5m from surface of water. (Evaluation) (Unit-II) (15)
