Democracy is supposed to be rule of the people, by the people, and for the people. But
in order to rule effectively, the people need political knowledge. If they know little or
nothing about government, it becomes difficult to hold political leaders accountable for
their performance. Unfortunately, public knowledge about politics is disturbingly low.
In addition, the public also often does a poor job of evaluating the political information
they do know. This state of affairs has persisted despite rising education levels,
increased availability of information thanks to modern technology, and even rising IQ
scores. It is mostly the result of rational behavior, not stupidity. Such widespread and
persistent political ignorance and irrationality strengthens the case for limiting and
decentralizing the power of government.

 Corruption - From the national government to local/provincial/city

governments. Imagine how many politicians deduct their kickbacks from the
funds for their self interest! Even former presidents have plunder cases yet
they’re not condemned for their scandaluos and face slapping theft of the
people’s taxes! They got even re elected as mayors and congressmans!
 Infrastructure - buildings, housings, bridges, skyways, roads, canal systems,
& etc. these are just one of the projects that are poorly supervised and
underfunded. The roads in the provinces can’t even stand a 10 wheeler truck
and several buses for a month. Provinces in the north are 8–19 hrs long drive
to reach the metro!
  Crooked Politicians - The elites of the country. Some politicians are working
for themselves and not for the interest of the people. Yet the mass keeps on
voting for them.

Current Issues and Problems:

A. Budget deficit
B. Inefficiency in Budget allocation
C. Tax collection/ evasion
D. Pork barrel
E. Ghost projects
F. Ghost payroll
G. Evasion of Public Building in the awarding of contracts
H. The practice of passing contracts from one contractor to another
I. Nepotism and favoritism
J. Extortion
K. “Tong” or protection money
L. The “lagay” system or bribery

Examples:

 Build, Build, Build: P73 billion worth of DPWH projects delayed-DPWH spends
only a 3rd of its budget, and ends up paying banks P27 million as a result of its
failure to utilize approved loans.
 The Department of Health (DOH) breached the contract when it failed to
provide the sites needed for its P8.1-billion barangay health station project.
 Dengvaxia vaccine did not follow proper procurement process
 DOH's P1.6B projects are delayed, broken or unused – COA
 Malacañang urges Ombudsman to look into ‘questionable spending’ of some gov’t agencies.

For the common Filipino:

It depends on ones perceptive bias which would be reliant on how you prioritize
things, like any developing country, the common issues of poverty, health and welfare,
economics, it really is a very broad spectrum to be honest, one day we have problems
with a fentanyl induced executive orders as what the other political party is having
problems with which a lot of Filipinos don’t give a care at all because everybody is
more concerned with getting by for the day which is an a polarizing yet legitimate
answer specially if you experienced poverty firsthand, and the next day we have to
deal with infrastructure integrity during disasters.

To be honest a lot of us overseas or local would agree that we hate politicians, specially
the lying and money playing types that are prone to promises and corruption. Nobody
likes to have their tax money spent on luxurious cruise on a winter wonderland (if you
know what I mean).

But…

The greatest scourge of any country is the “victim” citizen, a citizen who feels that they
are entitled to everything, if they don’t get what they want it is always the
government’s fault, everyone has it harder in life so deal with it, it is this ignorance
that elects incompetent officials in a self perpetuating cycle, a voter who gets paid does
not have any right to complain how bad their situation is due to that said bribing
official.

It is not the governments fault if you don’t have a new Iphone.

You can’t afford because of taxes? think about who did you vote?

What bills did the voted official bring you? Blessings or Curse?
Apparently people don’t give a s**t about this things here, because
as long they eat they are okay, nobody can’t blame them,
I was like that once too, but I said one day that I don’t
want my future kids to suffer like I did.

So if you are asking what the greatest problem of the Philippines?

It is apathy,callousness and ignorance. Really there would be no
problem if voters where more educated about who and whom to vote.
So if you want to solve the said problems, fellow Filipinos, start with
yourselves and educate others, I know nobody likes a smart-**s’ answer
like mine, but I’d rather be blunt and honest rather than sugarcoat and
pretend to be blind. Know how you put your power to, democracy is
as effective as the literacy and intelligence of the populace.

The root cause of the problem is as important as the

current ones because if you would analyze it:
Incompetent Official = Incompetent Governance
Incompetent Governance = Poor use of Resources
Poor use of Resources = Weak infrastructure
Weak Infrastructure = Poor Accessibility to services
Poor accessibility to services = Bad economy
Bad Economy = Poverty and Poor Education
Poverty and Poor Education = Uneducated voters

Uneducated voters = Incompetent Official

And we go full circle, you see?
