PRE INSTALLATION LAB REQUIREMENTS

(FOR ARL XRF 9900 INTELLIPOWER SERIES SPECTROMETER – 1200W)

1. The input power supply should be as per the recommendation of Thermo. It should
be 230V -15% /+10% Single Phase. Minimum 5 KVA UPS with Isolation
Transformer is must. The main power connections must be done with cables
having a section of 2.5 mm². In general customer should provide an Uninterrupted
& Stabilized Power Supply with proper earthing.

2. Earth connection should be as per the following specifications.

a. Separate earth pit (An insulated flexible single strand copper wire of 10 swg
(10 gauge) must be running from the earth pit to Spectrometer Lab). Make
the connection as short as possible & avoid loops.
b. Voltage between Earth & Neutral should be less than 1.0 V.
c. Get a resistance as low as possible, which means less than 2 Ω!
d. The earth should not be used by any other equipment producing high
frequencies (Should be a separate earth pit).

3. Vinyl or Mosaic flooring for the main lab.

4. 32A Single-phase socket with MCB, mains outlet. (In the main lab for the main
instrument)

5. 4 Nos. of 5 A mains socket (In the main lab for Computer, Monitor & Printer)

6. Air Conditioners to keep the room temperature around 22°C (Min 18°C & Max
28°C; Max allowed temperature variation is ±1°C/h). Instrument’s Air Heating
Power is 2700W. False ceiling if required.

7. Computer table for Computer and Printer and associated furniture.

8. Minimum Required laboratory space is 2.5 m x 2.5m. For the lab layout please refer
the Fig 4.2 given below.

9. For P10 gas connections, please refer the details under heading “Specifications for
gas connections” given below.

10. Sample preparation equipments as per the production process. (Separate room)
Laboratory layout

As shown in the figures below we recommend a laboratory dimension of about 2.5 m x 2.5 m. This
allows for easy operating, servicing and maintenance. It is important to respect a minimum
distance of 30 cm between the rear of the instrument and the wall. You can also observe that the
cooling air outputs are located behind the instrument. The figure 4.2 shows the ARL 9900
Intellipower Series with the 12 position sample magazine.

Note: The ARL 9900 Intellipower Series 1200W includes a heat exchanger to cool the X-ray tube
water by air. The distance between the instrument and the exchanger can be up to 10 meters and on
the same floor. Proper Air Ducting should be provided so as the laboratory temperature is not
affected by the thermal dissipation. Or it may be installed in a separate air conditioned room
Specification for gas connection

The ARL XRF Spectrometer needs an ArCH4 (P10) gas supply for the flow proportional counter.
The gas bottle and the pressure reducer are to be procured separately. Nevertheless the user can use
his own pressure reducer. For the argon gas (ArCH4) the pressure must be adjustable around 0.2
bar. If the pressure reducer is supplied by the user, the low pressure side must be adjustable from
0.05 bar up to 1 bar. The instrument is delivered with an external VITON pipe and all necessary
fittings to allow the connection to the pressure reducer. The length of this pipe is 5 meters and the
internal and external diameters are respectively 3 mm and 5 mm. Figure 5.9 gives you the details
of the gas fittings.

Argon-Methane (P10) specification

The ArCH4 (P10) gas is a mixture of 90% of Ar and 10% (9.5% to 10.5%) of CH4. The
specification for gas must be the following:
