What We Did, What’s Coming Up:
Language Arts:
Our shared readings were the poems Five Little Monsters and 10 Galloping Horses. We worked
on the letters C, O, Q, and G.

Our focus read aloud this week I Was So Mad by Mercer Mayer. We compared last week’s
reading, Sophie Was Angry, Really Angry, to this week’s reading.

Our writer’s workshop mentor text this week was Red Is A Dragon by Roseanne Thong. We
brainstormed with partners about things we know that are red. Then we generated a list of all
the things we knew were red.

Math:
This week in math, we got to measure items around the room using a measurement stick of 10 connecting cubes. Our task
was to find something smaller and something bigger than our stick and sort them. We also played a variation of the Grab
and Count called Grab and Compare. This game required us to take a handful with our left hand of one colored cubes
and a handful with our right hand of another colored cube and then compare the two to see which hand had the bigger
amount. We learned a new game with our Number Cards called Compare. For this game, each partner gets half of the
cards. On the count of 3, both partners turn their top card over and decide who has the bigger number. We are working
on skip counting by 10’s to 40 since we just had our 40th day of school!

Content:
This week, we learned about living and nonliving things. We sorted items by if they were a living thing or nonliving thing. If we
were confused, we asked the five questions of a living thing: does it need air, water/food, space/shelter, and sunlight (if a
plant). We took a look at the plant life cycle and dissected the different parts of the cycle. We learned that plants begin as
a seed, seedling, sprout, and then into the full plant over time. We planted our own seeds (onions, radishes, and carrots)
and will watch them grow over time with our special planter that allows us to see the seeds sprout and grow. Next week we
will look at the pumpkin and apple life cycles. We will perform investigations and experiments with pumpkins as well.
