Gus Birdwell Elementary has a diverse population of students that come from varying socio-economic levels, educational backgrounds, and
cultures.
Gus Birdwell Elementary strives to promote a positive learning atmosphere by making sure that the building is inviting for children and
parents. GBE utilizes a yearly theme to jump start learning and make our building a "learning rich environment." The parents of GBE
students frequently have lunch with their child and seem to feel comfortable at the school. Many learning opportunities are offered to
parents throughout the school year to learn more about how they can help their child.
Spearman ISD strives to ensure that the very best teachers are recruited and trained. Teacher Mentoring is provided to first year teachers and to those who
are new to Spearman ISD.
Gus Birdwell Elementary is constantly seeking ways to improve the quality of instruction and the use of effective strategies.
Gus Birdwell Elementary is fortunate to have good parent involvement whereby parents feel comfortable coming to the school to eat lunch with their
children on a regular basis. Our goal is to take this involvement and increase parent awareness of academic needs. Communication with family and
community members is very important in making sure that all are aware of school events.
The elementary is also involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program, Snack Pak 4 Kids program, Partners in Education, and "Read with a Buddy"
program. Parents are receptive to attending events held at the school and the community is extremely supportive of school programs.
Gus Birdwell is located in Spearman, Texas, a rural town which has a population of approximately 3,300. Spearman has a low crime rate. The three top
industries are agriculture, health care and education.
Spearman is a family centered community with a high church participation. Many teachers grew up in Spearman and have returned to teach.
Technology Summary
Gus Birdwell Elementary is consistently striving to ensure that students are able to utilize 21st century technology and have access to devices that promote
this initiative.
Technology Strengths
Teachers are enrolled in the Grant Program to receive training regarding technology. Once training has been completed teachers may select the type of
device they would like to utilize in their classroom. This has helped to ensure that devices are being utilized in an efficient manner and that students are
being exposed to 21st century demands regarding technology.
