FOREWORD
The lessons we will study during this quarter deal with the
subject, THE CHURCH AND THE WORK. Many important
truths-such as those which show us how to secure the spiritual
prosperity of the church, how to further the progress of the work,
how to meet church difficulties, how to close the door against
disorderly manifestations, how to ensure the peace of the church
-will be brought up in these lessons. The relationship between
Christ and the church, and between the church and its individual
members, should be clearly understood, and the instructions cal-
culated to promote unity, cooperation and love among the people
of God, must be impressed on the minds of the brethren, so that
the blessings of God may rest upon us as a people and as individ-
uals.
In the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy the purpose of organ-
ization, system, and order is very plain: On the one hand we are
not to allow formalism and machinery to prevail over the simplic-
ity of the gospel and the primitive godliness that characterized
the early Christian church, but on the other hand we are to un-
derstand that "thorough organization is essential" "to keep out
spurious uprisings," "to refute claims not endorsed by the word
of God," and to give "disorderly elements" no chance "to control
the work at this time" (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 228).
May the Spirit of God enlighten the minds of teachers and
students as they study these lessons!

A SANCTUARY IN

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA

Colombia lies in northwestern South America. It is

the only South American country that faces both the
Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans (Caribbean Sea). Its
area is 439,737 square miles. Its estimated population
was over 25 million in 1976. Most Colombians belong to
the Roman Catholic Church. The country is ripe for the
last message, and there is complete religious liberty.
Our brethren in Bogota, the capital city, are meet-
ing in a rented hall. They are making plans to build a
chapel and adjoining rooms for offices and other needs,
for the promoting of the work. Many more people would
come to their meetings, and the work there would grow
more rapidly if they had a church building in Bogota.
Although our brethren in Colombia are poor, they
are willing to continue making sacrifices toward the
carrying out of their plan. But the accomplishment of
their project will be possible only with the help of our
brethren in other countries. An appeal for a 13th Sab-
bath offering is therefore being directed to our people
everywhere. Please remember our Colombian brethren
and make a generous contribution.

ORGANIZATION

The church was organized for service. Everyone who becomes a follower of Christ
is to engage actively in the work of soul-saving. In this work-which is the highest
work on earth-unions and fields, institutions and departments, local churches
and groups, as well as individual members, all depend on one another, and are to
work in harmony with one another, as a wheel within a wheel, in agreement with
God's plan of organization. (Read Desire ofAges, pp. 822, 823; Selected Messages, book 1,
p.112.)

KEY TEXT: "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of
your calling" (Ephesians 4:4).

The First Two Steps D Sunday

March 27
1. What was the first step in the organization of the Christian church? Mark
3:13, 14.

"It was at the ordination of the Twelve that the first step was taken in the organiza-
tion of the church that after Christ's departure was to carry on His work on the earth."-
The Acts of the Apostles. p. 18.

2. As the membership was growing, what further step was taken in the organiza-
tion of the church? Acts 6:1-6.

"There was necessity for a further distribution of the responsibilities which had
been borne so faithfully by a few during the earlier days of the church. The apostles
must now take an important step in the perfecting of gospel order in the church, by
laying upon others some of the burdens thus far borne by themselves.
"Summoning a meeting of the believers, the apostles were led by the Holy Spirit to
outline a plan for the better organization of all the working forces of the church. The
time had come, the apostles stated, when the spiritual leaders having the oversight of
the church should be relieved from the task of distributing to the poor and from similar
burdens, so that they might be free to carry forward the work of preaching the gos-
pel. " - The Acts of the Apostles. pp. 88, 89.
Further Steps D Monday
March 28
3. What further improvement was made later in the organization of the early
Christian church? 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11-15.

"Later in the history of the early church, when in various parts of the world many
groups of believers had been formed into churches, the organization of the church was

-5-
further perfected, so that order and harmonious action might be maintained. Every
member was exhorted to act well his part. Each was to make a wise use of the talents
entrusted to him." - The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 91, 92.

4. Why are different degrees of responsibility needed in the organization of the

church? Exodus 18:21 (last part), 22. What instruction did the Lord's servant
leave for us?

"The time and strength of those who in the providence of God have been placed in
leading positions of responsibility in the church, should be spent in dealing with the
weightier matters demanding special wisdom and largeness of heart. It is not in the
order of God that such men should be appealed to for the adjustment of minor matters
that others are well qualified to handle."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 93.

A United Whole o Tuesday

March 29

5. How does Paul teach that the church of God on earth is not a field of scattered,
independent individuals? Colossians 2:19; Ephesians 4:16. What success was
ensured by the system into which the early Christians were organized?

"The order that was maintained in the early Christian church made it possible for
them to move forward solidly as a well-disciplined army clad with the armor of God.
The companies of believers, though scattered over a large territory, were all members
of one body; all moved in concert and in harmony with one another."- The Acts of the
Apostles, pp. 95, 96.

6. How does the apostle teach that the church of God is an arrangement in which
many parts are joined together to form a complete whole? Ephesians 4:3-6;
1 Corinthians 10:16, 17. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say on this point?

"Thus the true Christian church are united in one Lord, one faith, one baptism."-
The Story of Redemption, p. 289.

A United Whole (continued) o Wednesday

March 30

7. What illustration confirms the fact that the church is a spiritual organism in
which all parts work together? 1 Corinthians 12:12-18.

"The figure of the members which compose the body represents the church of God
and the relation its members should sustain to one another." - The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 109!.
"As all the different members of the human system unite to form the entire body,
and each performs its office in obedience to the intelligence that governs the whole, so
the members of the church of Christ should be united in one symmetrical body, subject
to the sanctified intelligence of the whole." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 16.

8. What other illustration also teaches that the church is an organic structure?
Ephesians 2:21, 22. What does the Lord do with the scattered living stones
that are to be used in building the spiritual temple? 1 Peter 2:5. Upon what
foundation does the church of God stand? 1 Corinthians 3:10,11.

-6-
"Upon the foundation that Christ Himself had laid, the apostles built the church of
God. In the Scriptures the figure of the erection of a temple is frequently used to illus-
trate the building of the church." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 595.
"When completed, this [spiritual] temple will be perfect in all its parts, the admira-
tion of angels and of men; for its Builder and Maker is God."- The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments). vol. 2. p. 1029.

In the Time of the End D Thursday

March 31

9. What shows that the church will remain as a unit to the very end? John 10:16.
Following the teachings of Paul and the example of the early Christians, what
did the SDA pioneers understand as far as organization was concerned? Why
do disorderly, irresponsible, and dictatorial elements hate organization (sys-
tem, order, rules, and regulations)?

"As our numbers increased, it was evident that without some form of organization
there would be great confusion, and the work would not be carried forward success-
fully. To provide for the support of the ministry, for carrying the work in new fields,
for protecting both the churches and the ministry from unworthy members, for holding
church property, for the publication of the truth through the press, and for many other
objects, organization was indispensable." - Testimonies to Ministers. p. 26.

10. What evidence shows that God will use the church as a united body to enlight-
en the world? John 17:21; Revelation 18:1-4.

"The church is the depositary of the wealth of the riches of the grace of Christ, and
through the church eventually will be made manifest the final and full display of the
love of God to the world that is to be lightened with its glory. The prayer of Christ that
His church may be one as He was one with His Father will finally be answered."- Tes-
timonies to Ministers, p. 50.
"Some have advanced the thought that as we near the close of time, every child of
God will act independently of any religious organization. But I have been instructed
by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every man's being independent.
... And in order that the Lord's work may advance healthfully and solidly, His people
must draw together." -Ibid., p. 489.

Recapitulation D Friday

needed for the development of the work.
c. What made it possible for the early church to move forward solidly, as a well-
disciplined army?
d. What is frequently used in the Bible to illustrate the building of the church?
e. What is our great safeguard against dictatorial cliques and/or disorderly ele-
ments who desire to control the work in these last days? •

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
CHRIST AND THE CHURCH

"We should remember that the church, enfeebled and defective though it be, is the
only object on earth on which Christ bestows His supreme regard. He is constantly
watching it with solicitude, and is strengthening it by His Holy Spirit." -Selected
Messages, book 2, p. 396.

KEY TEXT: "He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye" (Zechariah 2:8).

Christ, the Truth, and the Church o Sunday

April 3

1. How do we know that a person who accepts Christ will be directed to the
church? Compare John 16: 13 (first part) with 1 Timothy 3: 15 (last part). What
evidence shows that those who follow Christ and the truth will be connected
with the church and respect the voice of the church?

"Very close and sacred is the relation between Christ and His church-He the bride-
groom, and the church the bride; He the head, and the church the body. Connection
with Christ, then, involves connection with His church." -Education, p. 268.
"Christ and His church are inseparable. To neglect or despise those whom God has
appointed to lead out and to bear the responsibilities connected with His work and with
the advancement and spread of the truth is to reject the means which God has ordained
for the help, encouragement, and strength of His people. To pass these by and think
your light must come through no other channel than directly from God places you in a
position where you are liable to deception and to be overthrown."- Testimonies, vol. 3, pp.
418, 419.
"If you are led by the truth rather than error you will be willing to obey your parents
[if you have truly Christian parents] and sacredly regard the voice of the church." -ibid.,
vol. 5, p. 108.

2. Through what channel does God communicate His purposes and His will? Give
an example. Acts 15:25, 28.

"God has made His church on the earth a channel of light, and through it He com-
municates His purposes and His will. He does not give to one of His servants an ex-
perience independent of and contrary to the experience of the church itself. Neither
does He give one man a knowledge of His will for the entire church while the church-
Christ's body-is left in darkness. In His providence He places His servants in close
connection with His church in order that they may have less confidence in themselves
and greater confidence in others whom He is leading out to advance His work."- The
Acts of the Apostles, p. 163.

-8-
A Serious Danger o Monday
April 4

3. What attitude toward the church of God is condemned in the Bible? 1 Corin-
thians 10:32; 11:22. What arrangement has God established, and how dan-
gerous is it for any person to ignore this arrangement?

"The Lord in His wisdom has arranged that by means of the close relationship that
should be maintained by all believers, Christian shall be united to Christian and church
to church. Thus the human instrumentality will be enabled to cooperate with the divine.
Every agency will be subordinate to the Holy Spirit, and all the believers will be united
in an organized and well-directed effort to give to the world the glad tidings of the grace
of God."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 164.
"God has instituted no new method of reaching the children of men. If they cut
themselves off from heaven's appointed agencies to reprove. their sins, correct their
errors, and point out the path of duty, there is no way to reach them with any heavenly
communication. They are left in darkness and are ensnared and taken by the adver-
sary."-Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 298, 299.

4. How does Christ identify Himself with His persecuted people? Acts 9:4; Mat-
thew 25:40; Zechariah 2:8 (last part).

"Christ here identifies Himself with His people. In persecuting the followers of
Jesus, Saul had struck directly against the Lord of heaven. In falsely accusing and testi-
fying against them, he had falsely accused and testified against the Saviour of the
world. "-The Acts of the Apostles, p. 117.

Following Our Guide o Tuesday

April 5

5. Where does the Lord place the souls that are to be saved? Acts 2:47 (last part).

"Many have an idea that they are responsible to Christ alone for their light and ex-
perience, independent of His recognized followers on earth. Jesus ... has all power,
both in heaven and on earth; but He respects the means that He has ordained for the
enlightenment and salvation of men; He directs sinners to the church, which He has
made a channel of light to the world."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 122.
"There are conversions to be made that will add to the church such as shall be
saved."-Evangelism, p. 32.

6. Through what experience must we go before we can be accepted into the king-
dom of God? Mark 4:26-29. Where are we to grow and ripen for the heavenly
garner?

"It is in the church that we are to grow and ripen for the garner of God." -Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 70.

Two Examples o Wednesday

April 6

7. What important principle is taught in the record of the conversion of Saul?

Acts 9:6, 11, 12.

-9-
"When, in the midst of his blind error and prejudice, Saul was given a revelation
of the Christ whom he was persecuting, he was placed in direct communication with
the church, which is the light of the world. In this case Ananias represents Christ, and
also represents Christ's ministers upon the earth, who are appointed to act in His stead.
In Christ's stead Ananias touches the eyes of Saul, that they may receive sight. In
Christ's stead he places his hands upon him, and, as he prays in Christ's name, Saul
receives the Holy Ghost. All is done in the name and by the authority of Christ. Christ
is the fountain; the church is the channel of communication."- The Acts of the Apostles, p.
122.
"Thus Jesus gave sanction to the authority of His organized church and placed
Saul in connection with His appointed agencies on earth. Christ had now a church as
His representative on earth, and to it belonged the work of directing the repentant sin-
ner in the way of life."-Ibid.
"In the conversion of Paul are given us important principles which we should ever
bear in mind. The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experience and exercise
in religious matters independent of His organized and acknowledged church, where
He has a church."- Testimonies. vol. 3. pp. 432. 433.
8. What other experience confirms the same principle? Acts 10:1-5.

"Here again God showed His regard for the gospel ministry, and for His organized
church."- The Story of Redemption. p. 283.
Two More Examples D Thursday
April 7
9. In the conversion of the Ethiopian, what lesson is taught concerning the rela-
tionship between Christ and His organized church? Acts 8:27-29, 35-37.

"In the experience of Philip and the Ethiopian is presented the work to which the
Lord calls His people....
"God designs that life-giving beams shall, through the individual members of the
church, shine forth to the world ....
"I call upon the church to pray earnestly, that you may understand your responsi-
bilities." -Review and Herald. March 2, 1911.

10. What other event shows that the Lord works through His organized church?
Acts 13:1-3.

"The circumstances connected with the separation of Paul and Barnabas by the
Holy Spirit to a definite line of service show clearly that the Lord works through ap-
pointed agencies in His organized church."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 162.
Recapitulation D Friday
April 8
a. If a person is led by the truth, whose voice will he hold in high regard?
b. What happens to anyone who rejects or ignores the duly appointed agencies
in the church?
c. What is the relationship between the church and the candidates for salvation?
d. What kind of religious experience is not sanctioned by heaven?
e. Give examples showing that God uses His church as the channel of communi-
cation? •

Lesson 3 Sabbath, April 16, 1983

AUTHORITY

"The Son of God identified Himself with the office and authority of His organized
church. His blessings were to come through the agencies that He ordained, thus
connecting man with the channel through which His blessings COme."-Testimonies,
vol. 3, p. 432.

KEY TEXT: "Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and what-
soever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Matthew
18:18).
The Voice of the General Council 0 Sunday
April 10
1. When the early Christians were confronted with an important controversial
question, how did they act? Give an example. Acts 15:2, 6.

"When dissension arose in a local church, as later it did arise in Antioch and else-
where, and the believers were unable to come to an agreement among themselves, such
matters were not permitted to create a division in the church, but were referred to a
general council of the entire body of believers, made up of appointed delegates from
the various local churches, with the apostles and elders in positions of leading respon-
sibility. Thus the efforts of Satan to attack the church in isolated places were met by
concerted action on the part of all, and the plans of the enemy to disrupt and destroy
were thwarted."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 96.
2. How did the general council fulfill its God-given duty? Give an example. Acts
15:12-15, 19,20,25.

"The council which decided this case [referring to ceremonial laws imposed on
the Gentiles] was composed of apostles and teachers who had been prominent in rais-
ing up the Jewish and Gentile Christian churches, with chosen delegates from various
places....
"The entire body of Christians was not called to vote upon the question. The 'apos-
tles and elders,' men of influence and judgment, framed and issued the decree, which
was thereupon generally accepted by the Christian churches."- The Acts of the Apostles. p.-
196.

United in Church Capacity o Monday

April 11
3. How did the churches and members respond to the resolutions made by the
general council and what was the result? Give an example. Acts 15:28-32.
What authority was acknowledged by the believers in connection with the
decisions of the council?

"The four servants of God were sent to Antioch with the epistle and message that
was to put an end to all controversy; for it was the voice of the highest authority upon
the earth." - The Acts of the Apostles. p. 196.

-11-
"The broad and far-reaching decisions of the general council brought confidence
into the ranks of the Gentile believers, and the cause of God prospered." -Ibid., p. 197.
4. What principle was stressed by Paul and Peter? Ephesians 5:21; 1 Peter 5:5.

"Notwithstanding the fact that Paul was personally taught by God, he had no
strained ideas of individual responsibility. While looking to God for direct guidance,
he was ever ready to recognized the authority vested in the body of believers united in
church fellowship. He felt the need of counsel, and when matters of importance arose,
he was glad to lay these before the church, and to unite with his brethren in seeking
God for wisdom to make right decisions.... With Peter, he taught that all united in
church capacity should be 'subject one to another.' 1 Peter 5:5."- The Acts of the Apostles,
p.200.

God's Order and System Today D Tuesday

April 12
5. How are we to act as we follow the example of order and system set by the
early Christians? Philippians 2:2-5, 12, 14; 1 Corinthians 14:33.

"He [God] requires that order and system be observed in the conduct of church
affairs today no less than in the days of old. He desires His work to be carried forward
with thoroughness and exactness so that He may place upon it the seal of His approval.
Christian is to be united with Christian, church with church, the human instrumentality
cooperating with the divine, every agency subordinate to the Holy Spirit, and all com-
bined in giving to the world the good tidings of the grace of God." -The Acts of the Apostles,
p.96.

6. For what purpose did the apostles leave us an example in many things? 2 Thes-
salonians 3:7,9. In accordance with the order and system inherited from the
apostolic church, who has been vested with power to make decisions in our
days? .

"Never should the mind of one man or the minds of a few men be regarded as suf-
ficient in wisdom and power to control the work and to say what plans shall be fol-
lowed. But when, in a General Conference, the judgment of the brethren assembled
from all parts of the field is exercised, private independence and private judgment
must not be stubbornly maintained, but surrendered. Never should a laborer regard
as a virtue the persistent maintenance of his position of independence, contrary to the
decision of the general body.
" ... God has ordained that the representatives of His church from all parts of the
earth, when assembled in a General Conference, shall have authority."-Testimonies, vol.
9, pp. 260, 261.

How Satan Counteracts the Work of God o Wednesday

Aprii 13
7. Before the decision of the general council was issued, how, and through whom,
did Satan work? Acts 15:1,24. How did they act after the decision?

"Not all, however, were pleased with the decision; there was a faction of ambitious
and self-confident brethren who disagreed with it. These men assumed to engage in
the work on their own responsibility. They indulged in much murmuring and fault-
finding, proposing new plans and seeking to pull down the work of the men whom God
had ordained to teach the gospel message. From the first the church has had such ob-
stacles to meet and ever will have till the close of time." -The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 196, 197.

-12 -
8. What class of professed believers have always been a great hindrance to the
progress of the work? Titus 1 :9-11. What warning has been given about those
who refuse to submit to the decisions of the general body of believers in united
council?

"The greater the responsibilities placed upon the human agent, and the larger his
opportunities to dictate and control, the more harm he is sure to do if he does not care-
fully follow the way of the Lord and labor in harmony with the decisions arrived at by
the general body of believers in united council."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 199.

An Attitude Which Offends God D Thursday

April 14

9. If a member refuses to listen to the church, how must he be dealt with? Mat-
thew 18:17.

"If he will not heed the voice of the church, if he refuses all the efforts made to re-
claim him, upon the church rests the responsibility of separating him from fellowship.
His name should then be stricken from the books."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 262.
"He who despises the authority of the church despises the authority of Christ Him-
self."- The Desire of Ages, p. 806.

10. What decision of the church is ratified in heaven? Matthew 18:18.

"On the church has been conferred the power to act in Christ's stead. It is God's
instrumentality for the preservation of order and discipline among His people. To it
the Lord has delegated the power to settle all questions respecting its prosperity, pu-
rity, and order. Upon it rests the responsibility of excluding from its fellowship those
who are unworthy, who by their unchristlike conduct would bring dishonor on the truth.
Whatever the church does that is in accordance with the directions given in God's word
will be ratified in heaven."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 263.
"The world's Redeemer has invested great power with His church. He states the
rules to be applied in cases of trial with its members. After He has given explicit direc-
tions as to the course to be pursued, He says: 'Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye
shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever [in church discipline] ye
shall loose on earth shall be lossed in heaven.' Thus even the heavenly authority ratifies
the discipline of the church in regard to its members when the Bible rule has been fol-
lowed." -Ibid., vol. 3, p. 428.

Recapitulation D Friday
April 15

a. How did the early Christians thwart the plans of Satan to disrupt and destroy
the work?
b. What was one of the factors in the advancement of the cause of God?
c. What does God require in the carrying forward of his work on earth?
d. What damage was caused, and will be caused again and again, by those who
ignore the authority of the general body of believers in united council?
e. Whose authority does a person actually despise by despising the authority of
the church? •

Lesson 4 Sabbath, April 23, 1983

THE WORK

"Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour
mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for
them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them,
'Follow Me.' "-The Ministry of Healing, p. 143.

KEY TEXT: "Jesus of Nazareth ... went about doing good, and healing all that
were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him" (Acts 10:38).
Attending Yearly Festivals D Sunday
April 17
1. For what purpose did Christ go to the yearly festivals of the Jewish nation?
John 7:14, 15; 12:12, 13.

"He [Christ] attended the great yearly festivals of the nation, and to the multitude
absorbed in outward ceremony He spoke of heavenly things, bringing eternity within
their view. To all He brought treasures from the storehouse of wisdom. He spoke to
them in language so simple that they could not fail of understanding. By methods pecu-
liarly His own, He helped all who were in sorrow and affliction. With tender, courteous
grace, He ministered to the sin-sick soul, bringing healing and strength.
"The Prince of teachers, He sought access to the people by the pathway of their
most familiar associations. He presented the truth in such a way that ever after it was
to His hearers intertwined with their most hallowed recollections and sympathies."-
Evangelism, pp. 54, 55.

2. How did the apostles improve the missionary opportunities offered by the
national festivals? Acts 2:1, 14-16; 18:21; 20:16.

"Every year, at the time of the festivals, many Jews from all lands came to Jeru-
salem to worship at the temple. Some of these pilgrims were men of fervent piety and
earnest students of the prophecies. They were looking and longing for the advent of
the promised Messiah, the hope of Israel. While Jerusalem was filled with these stran-
gers, the apostles preached Christ with unflinching courage, though they knew that in
so doing they were placing their lives in constant jeopardy. The Spirit of God set its
seal upon their labors; many converts to the faith were made; and these, returning to
their homes in different parts of the world, scattered the seeds of truth through all na-
tions and among all classes of society." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 165.
Social Meetings D Monday
April 18
3. What special opportunities did Christ improve to sow the seeds of truth? John
2:1,2; Matthew 9:10; John 12:2.

"When invited to a feast, Christ accepted the invitation, that He might, while sit-
ting at the table, sow the seeds of truth in the hearts of those present. He knew that

-14 -
the seed thus sown would spring up and bring forth fruit. He knew that some of those
sitting at meat with Him would afterward respond to His call, 'Follow Me.' "-Evangelism,
p.58.

4. For what purpose were the above examples recorded in the Gospels? 1 Corin-
thians 11: 1.

"Ours is the privilege of studying Christ's manner of teaching as He went from

place to place, everywhere sowing the seeds of truth."-Evangelism, p. 58.
Personal Interviews D Tuesday
April 19
5. What examples show that Christ had a high regard for personal interviews?
John 3:1-3; 4:6,7.

"The work of Christ was largely composed of personal interviews. He had a faith-
ful regard for the one-soul audience; and that one soul has carried to thousands the in-
telligence received." -Evangelism, p. 58.
6. Give examples of successful individual missionary contacts made by the apos-
tles. Acts 8:29-31; 10:22; 16:29-32; 28:7-9. How does the Spirit of Proph-
ecy emphasize the importance of individual work?

"Everywhere there is a tendency to substitute the work of organizations for indi-

vidual effort. Human wisdom tends to consolidation, to centralization, to the building
up of great churches and institutions. Multitudes leave to institutions and organizations
the work of benevolence; they excuse themselves from contact with the world, and their
hearts grow cold. They become self-absorbed and unimpressible. Love for God and
man dies out of the soul.
"Christ commits to His followers an individual work-a work that cannot be done
by proxy. Ministry to the sick and the poor, the giving of the gospel to the lost, is not
to be left to committees or organized charities. Individual responsibility, individual ef-
fort, personal sacrifice, is the requirement of the gospel."- The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 147.
Healing the Sick D Wednesday
April 20
7. How did Christ express His great love for mankind? Matthew 9:35; Acts
10:38.

"True sympathy between man and his fellowman is to be the sign distinguishing
those who love and fear God from those who are unmindful of His law. How great the
sympathy that Christ expressed in coming to this world to give His life a sacrifice for
a dying world! His religion led to the doing of genuine medical missionary work. He was
a healing power. 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,' He said. This is the test that the
great Author of truth used to distinguish between true religion and false. God wants
His medical missionaries to act with the tenderness and compassion that Christ would
show were He in our world." -Medical Ministry, p. 251.
8. How are we to follow Christ's example? Matthew 10:7, 8.

"As religious aggression subverts the liberties of our nation, those who would stand
for freedom of conscience will be placed in unfavorable positions. For their own sake,
they should, while they have opportunity, become intelligent in regard to disease, its
causes, prevention, and cure. And those who do this will find a field of labor anywhere.

-15 -
There will be suffering ones, plenty of them, who will need help, not only among those
of our own faith, but largely among those who know not the truth.
"The shortness of time demands an energy that has not been aroused among those
who claim to believe the present truth." -Counsels on Health. p. 506.
True Medical Missionary Work o Thursday
April 21
9. What prophecy specified the medical missionary work that was to be accom·
plished by Christ? Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:18,19.

"This world is a vast lazar house, but Christ came to heal the sick, to proclaim de-
liverance to the captives of Satan. He was in Himself health and strength. He imparted
His life to the sick, the afflicted, those possessed of demons. He turned away none who
came to receive His healing power. He knew that those who petitioned Him for help
had brought disease upon themselves; yet He did not refuse to heal them. And when
virtue from Christ entered into these poor souls, they were convicted of sin, and many
were healed of their spiritual disease, as well as of their physical maladies. The gospel
still possesses the same power, and why should we not today witness the same re-
suits?" - The Desire of Ages, p. 823.
10. What prophecy points out the medical missionary work to be carried on by us
today? Isaiah 58:6-8. What did Christ say in reference to this work? Matthew
25:34-40.

"There is a work to be done by our churches that few have any idea of. 'I was an
hungred,' Christ says, 'and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was
a stranger, and ye took me in; naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited
me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me.' We shall have to give of our means to sup-
port laborers in the harvest field, and we shall rejoice in the sheaves gathered in. But
while this is right, there is a work, as yet untouched, that must:' be done. The mission
of Christ was to heal the sick, encourage the hopeless, bind up the brokenhearted. This
work of restoration is to be carried on among the needy, suffering ones of humanity.
God calls not only for your benevolence, but your cheerful countenance, your hopeful
words, the grasp of your hand. Relieve some of God's afflicted ones. Some are sick,
and hope has departed. Bring back the sunlight to them. There are souls who have lost
their courage; speak to them, pray for them. There are those who need the bread of
life. Read to them from the Word of God. There is a soul sickness no balm can reach,
no medicine heal. Pray for these, and bring them to Jesus Christ. And in all your
work, Christ will be present to make impressions upon human hearts.
"This is the kind of medical missionary work to be done." -A Call to Medical Evangelism,
pp. 22, 23.

METHODS

"If ever it has been essential that we understand and follow right methods of
teaching and follow the example of Christ, it is now."-Evangelism, p. 53.

KEY TEXT: "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto
Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:1, 2).

Training, Discipline, and Experience o Sunday

April 24

1. How does the Bible stress the importance of training, discipline, and experi·
ence? Ecclesiastes 10:10.

"One worker who has been trained and educated for the work, who is controlled
by the Spirit of Christ, will accomplished far more than ten laborers who go out defi-
cient in knowledge, and weak in the faith. One who works in harmony with the counsel
of God, and in unity with the brethren, will be more efficient to do good, than ten will
be who do not realize the necessity of depending upon God, and of acting in harmony
with the general plan of the work." -Evangelism, p. 109.

2. What is the general feeling when an inexperienced young man is given an im-
portant responsibility for which he is not qualified? Ecclesiastes 10:16. What
does the Spirit of Prophecy say about the sending of missionaries to new
fields?

"Experienced laborers should be given the work of entering new places. A course
is to be pursued that will maintain the sacred dignity of the work. We are ever to re-
member that evil angels are watching for opportunities to defeat our efforts." -Evange-
lism, p. 67.

Every Church a Training School o Monday

April 25

3. What cooperation is expected from everyone who has accepted Christ's call?
Revelation 22: 17. What is the best help that ministers can extend to church
members?

"The best help that ministers can give the members of our churches is not ser-
monizing, but planning work for them. Give each one something to do for others. Help
all to see that as receivers of the grace of Christ they are under obligation to work for
Him. And let all be taught how to work. Especially should those who are newly come
to the faith be educated to become laborers together with God. If set to work, the de-

-17 -
spondent will soon forget their despondency; the weak will become strong, the ignorant
intelligent, and all will be prepared to present the truth as it is in Jesus. They will find
an unfailing helper in Him who has promised to save all that come unto Him."-Testi-
monies, vol. 6, pp. 49, 50.

4. How do we know that, in the days of the apostles, every church was an educa-
tional center? 1 Corinthians 4:17. According to the Spirit of Prophecy, what
should every church be today?

"Every church should be a training school for Christian workers. Its members
should be taught how to give Bible readings, how to conduct and teach Sabbath-school
classes, how best to help the poor and to care for the sick, how to work for the uncon-
verted. There should be schools of health, cooking schools, and classes in various lines
of Christian help work. There should not only be teaching, but actual work under ex-
perienced instructors. Let the teachers lead the way in working among the people, and
others, uniting with them, will learn from their example. One example is worth more
than many precepts."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 149.

Essential Aspect of Christian Ministry o Tuesday

April 26

5. By whom and how was Elisha trained for the ministry? 2 Kings 2:9,10; 3:11
(second part).

"Ministry comprehends far more than preaching the word. It means training young
men as Elijah trained Elisha, taking them from their ordinary duties, and giving them
responsibilities to bear in God's work-small responsibilities at first, and larger ones
as they gain strength and experience." -Prophets and Kings, p. 222.
6. By whom and how was Timothy trained for the ministry? 2 Timothy 2:1,2.
How does the Spirit of Prophecy emphasize the importance of this type of
training?

"Those who undertake this training of young workers are doing noble service. The
Lord Himself co-operates with their efforts. And the young men to whom the word of
consecration has been spoken, whose privilege it is to be brought into close association
with earnest, godly workers, should make the most of their opportunity. God has
honored them by choosing them for His service and by placing them where they can
gain greater fitness for it, and they should be humble, faithful, obedient, and willing to
sacrifice. If they submit to God's discipline, carrying out His directions and choosing
His servants as their counselors, they will develop into righteous, high-principled,
steadfast men, whom God can entrust with responsibilities." -Prophets and Kings, p. 223.

Essential Aspect of Christian Ministry (continued) o Wednesday

April 27

7. How did Paul urge Timothy to continue his training? 1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Tim-
othy 2:15; 3:15-17. What is recorded about the training of Waldensian young
men for the ministry?

"Each [prospective missionary among the Waldenses] was to serve three years in
some mission field before taking charge of a church at home. This service, requiring
at the outset self-denial and sacrifice, was a fitting introduction to the pastor's life in
those times that tried men's souls. The youth who received ordination to the sacred

-18 -
office saw before them, not the prospect of earthly wealth and glory, but a life of toil
and danger, and possibly a martyr's fate. The missionaries went out two and two, as
Jesus sent forth His disciples. With each young man was usually associated a man of
age and experience, the youth being under the guidance of his companion, who was
held responsible for his training, and whose instruction he was required to heed. The
co-laborers were not always together, but often met for prayer and counsel, thus
strengthening each other in the faith." - The Great Controversy, pp. 70, 71.

8. What is expected from every competent and faithful minister? 1 John 1: 1-3.

"More attention should be given to training and educating missionaries with a

special reference to work in the cities. Each company of workers should be under the
direction of a competent leader, and it should ever be kept before them that they are
to be missionaries in the highest sense of the term." -Medical Ministry, p. 301.

Two and Two o Thursday

April 28

9. On whom should we keep our eyes fixed in our efforts to promote the work?
Hebrews 12:2. What method of labor was instituted by the Great Teacher?
Mark 6:7. How does the Spirit of Prophecy explain the advantages of united
labor?

"There is need of two working together; for one can encourage the other, and they
can counsel, pray, and search the Bible together. In this they may get a broader light
upon the truth; for one will see one phase, and the other another phase of the truth. If
they are erring, they can correct one another in speech and attitude, so that the truth
may not be lightly esteemed because of the defects of its advocates. If the workers are
sent out alone, there is no one to see or correct their errors; but when two go together,
an educating work may be carried on, and each worker become what he should be-a
successful soul winner." -Evangelism, p. 74.
"God calls for ministers, Bible workers, and canvassers. Let our young men and
young women go forth as evangelists and Bible workers, in company with a worker of
experience who can show them how to labor successfully."-Ibid., p. 109.

10. How did our Saviour reveal heavenly wisdom in associating those that were
to work together? Give examples of "two-and-two" associations among the
apostles. Acts 3:1; 4:13; 13:2; 14:14; 15:39,40. Describe the association of
two men of God during the Reformation in Germany.

"Our Saviour understood what ones to associate together. He did not connect with
the mild, beloved John one of the same temperament; but He connected with him the
ardent, impulsive Peter. These two men were not alike either in their disposition or in
their manner of labor. Peter was prompt and zealous in action, bold and uncompromis-
ing, and would often wound; John was ever calm, and considerate of others' feelings,
and would come after to bind up and encourage. Thus the defects in one were partially
covered by the virtues in the other." -Evangelism, pp. 72, 73.
"Luther was ardent and zealous, fearless and bold, in reproving sin and advocating
the truth. He cared not for wicked men or devils; he knew that he had One with him
mightier than they all. Luther possessed zeal, courage, and boldness, and at times was
in danger of going to extremes. But God raised up Melanchthon, who was just the op-

METHODS (continued)

"Men are needed who pray to God for wisdom, and who, under the guidance of
God, can put new life into the old methods of labor and can invent new plans and
new methods of awakening the interest of church members and reaching the men
and women of the world."-Evangelism, p. 105.

Warning Against Colonization o Sunday

May 1

1. What evidence shows that it is the plan of God that His people are not to colo-
nize, but to be dispersed throughout the earth? Mark 16: 15.

"Trees that are planted too thickly do not flourish. They are transplanted by the
gardener, that they may have room to grow and not become dwarfed and sickly. The
same rule would work well for our large churches. Many of the members are dying spir-
itually for want of this very work. They are becoming sickly and inefficient. Trans-
planted, they would have room to grow strong and vigorous. .
"It is not the purpose of God that His people should colonize or settle together in
large communities. The disciples of Christ are His representatives upon the earth, and
God designs that they shall be scattered all over the country, in the towns, cities, and
villages, as lights amidst the darkness of the world. They are to be missionaries for
God, by their faith and works testifying to the near approach of the coming Saviour."-
Testimonies, vol. 8. p. 244.

2. When the disciples were inclined to remain in large numbers in Jerusalem,

what did the Lord permit to come upon them, and for what purpose was this
permitted? Acts 8: 1.

"The persecution that came upon the church in Jerusalem resulted in giving a great
impetus to the work of the gospel. Success had attended the ministry of the word in that
place, and there was danger that the disciples would linger there too long, unmindful
of the Saviour's commission to go to all the world. Forgetting that strength to resist
evil is best gained by aggressive service, they began to think that they had no work so
important as that of shielding the church in Jerusalem from the attacks of the enemy.
Instead of educating the new converts to carry the gospel to those who had not heard
it, they were in danger of taking a course that would lead all to be satisfied with what
had been accomplished. To scatter His representatives abroad, where they could work
for others, God permitted persecution to come upon them. Driven from Jerusalem, the
believers 'went everywhere preaching the word.' "- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 105.

Jerusalem Centers, a Serious Mistake D Monday

3. What duty is imposed on every follower of Christ? 1 Corinthians 15:58. What
wrong move led many to neglect their Christian duty in the days of the SDA
pioneers?

"From nearly all our churches in Michigan, and, to some extent, from other states,
our brethren and sisters have been crowding into Battle Creek. Many of them were ef-
ficient helpers in smaller churches, and their removal has greatly weakened those little
companies; in some cases the church has thus been completely disorganized.
"Have those who moved to Battle Creek proved a help to the church? As the mat-
ter was presented before me, I looked to see who were bearing a living testimony for
God, who were feeling a burden for the youth, who were visiting from house to house,
praying with families and laboring for their spiritual interests. I saw that this work had
been neglected. On coming to this large church, many feel that they have no part to act.
Hence they fold their hands and shun all responsibility and effort."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp.
184, 185.

4. Writing to those who had moved to Battle Creek, how did the Lord's servant
open their eyes to their spiritual losses? What basic principle should be borne
in mind continually? John 17: 15, 16.

"Brethren, I entreat you to compare your own spiritual state as it now is with what it
was when you were actively engaged in the cause of Christ. While helping and encourag-
ing the church you were gaining a useful experience and keeping your own souls in the
love of God. As you have ceased to work for others, has not your own love grown cold
and your zeal languid? And how is it with your children? Are they more firmly estab-
lished in the truth and more devoted to God than before coming to this large church?
"The influence exerted by some who have long been connected with the work of
God is fatal to spirituality and devotion. These gospel-hardened youth have surrounded
themselves with an atmosphere of worldliness, irreverence, and infidelity. Dare you
risk the effect of such associations upon your children? It would be better for them
never to obtain an education than to acquire it at the sacrifice of principle and the bless-
ing of GOd."-Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 185, 186.
Ministers and Church Problems D Tuesday
May 3
5. How did Satan succeed in wasting part of Paul's precious time and labor? 1
Corinthians 3:3; Galatians 5:15. What are ministers required to do in the face
of obstinate church difficulties?

"God has not given His ministers the work of setting the churches right. No sooner
is this work done, apparently, than it has to be done over again. Church members that
are thus looked after and labored for become religious weaklings, If nine tenths of the
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
who have never heard the truth, how much greater would have been the advancement
made! God has withheld His blessings because His people have not worked in harmony
with His directions."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 18.
6. What admonition comes to those ministers and workers who lavish too much
time and labor upon those who already know the truth? Hosea 4:17. What
does the Spirit of Prophecy say about those who are chronically involved in
church problems?
- 21-
"Some seem to think that all that God has called messengers into the field for, is
to go at their bidding and to carry them in their arms; and that the most important part
of their work is to settle the petty trials and difficulties which they have brought upon
themselves by injudicious moves, and by giving way to the enemy, and indulging an
unyielding, faultfinding spirit toward those around them. But where are the hungry
sheep at this time? Starving for the bread of life. Those who know the truth and have
been established in it, but obey it not-if they did, they would be saved many of these
trials-are holding the messengers, and the very object for which God has called them
into the field is not accomplished." -Early Writings, p. 106.
"Our ministers are not to spend their time laboring for those who have already ac-
cepted the truth. With Christ's love burning in their hearts, they are to go forth to win
sinners to the Saviour."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 19.
Missionary Families for New Areas o Wednesday
May 4
7. What does the sacred record say about Christ's labor in behalf of cities and
villages? Luke 8:1. How are we to follow the Lord's example?
"Brethren who wish to change their location, who have the glory of God in view,
and feel that individual responsibility rests upon them to do others good, to benefit and
save souls for whom Christ withheld not His precious life, should move into towns and
villages where there is little or no light and where they can be of real service and bless
others with their labor and experience. Missionaries are wanted to go into towns and
villages, and raise the standard of truth, that God may have His witnesses scattered
all over the land, that the light of truth may penetrate where it has not yet reached, and
the standard of truth be raised where it is not yet known.... "-Evangelism, p. 52.
8. What call is coming to us, continually, from many places? Acts 16:9. How can
this call be answered?
"In humble dependence upon God, families are to settle in the waste places of His
vineyard. Consecrated men and women are needed to stand as fruit-bearing trees of
righteousness in the desert places of the earth. As the reward of their self-sacrificing
efforts to sow the seeds of truth, they will reap a rich harvest. As they visit family after
family, opening the Scriptures to those in spiritual darkness, many hearts will be touch-
ed."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 22.
"Weare to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves in our efforts to secure coun-
try properties at a low figure, and from these outpost centers we are to work the cities."
-Evangelism, p. 77.
Timely Instruction o Thursday
May 5
9. What warning did the Lord give to the people of Israel concerning the con-
quest of the promised land? Deuteronomy 7:22. What spiritual application
does that warning have today?
"Let not the means at your disposal be spent in so many places that nothing satis-
factory is accomplished anywhere. It is possible for the workers to spread their efforts
over so much territory that nothing will be properly done in the very places where, by
the Lord's direction, the work should be strengthened and perfected."-Evangelism, p.
80.
- 22-
"We must not plan for large beginnings while we have so little power to complete
that which is already begun. Let not new enterprises come in before their time, to ab-
sorb in other places the means that ought to be used to build up the work in - . The
interests in that place must be firmly established before other territory is entered."-
Ibid., p. 81.
10. What curse rests upon those who do the work of the Lord negligently? Jere-
miah 48: 10 (first part). How does the Spirit of Prophecy make this point clear?
t "God wants intelligent workers, doing their work not hurriedly but carefully and
thoroughly, always preserving the humility of Jesus. Those who put thought and pains-
taking into the higher duties, should put care and thought into the smaller duties,
showing exactitude and diligence."-Evangelism, p. 81.
ESSENTIALS TO SUCCESS IN GOD'S WORK
"God is a God of order. Everything connected with heaven is in perfect order; sub-
jection and thorough discipline mark the movements of the angelic host. Success
can only attend order and harmonious action. God requires order and system in
His work now no less than in the days of Israel." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 376.
Christ's Call for Laborers o Sunday
May 8
1. In the parable of the talents, how did the Lord express His concern over a cer-
tain class of church members? Matthew 25:24-28. How does the Spirit of
Prophecy describe this class?
"While some have worked intently, and have manifested unfailing energy, others
have stood as spectators, and have been ready to make remarks of a critical character
as to methods and results. This they are ready to do, though they have never exercised
their minds in originating any plans whereby precious souls might be saved for Christ.
They stand ready to find fault with those who do something. When these indolent souls
awake and show some signs of returning consciousness, they are disappointed if others
do not at once find them pleasant places in the work. It is a great shock to them to find
out that work cannot be done without painstaking, self-denying, self-crucifying efforts.
They expect success, and think that they must have the same order of success as did
the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. This success they will have when they go through
the experience of humble, self-denying sacrifice as did the apostles." - Testimonies to Min-
isters, pp. 206, 207.
2. How only can Christians make their prayers for success meaningful? John
14:12. What call comes to each one of us? Matthew 21:28 (last part).
,
I
\
"Whichever way we look we see rich harvests ready to be gathered, but there are
none to do the reaping. Prayers are offered for the triumph of the truth. What do your
prayers mean, brethren? What kind of success do you desire?-a success to suit your
indolence, your selfish indulgence?-a success that will sustain and support itself with-
out any effort on your part?"- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 203.
"A voice from heaven is solemnly calling you to duty. Heed this voice, and go to
work at once in any place, in any capacity. Why stand ye here all the day idle? There
is work for you to do, a work that demands your best energies. Every precious moment
of life is related to some duty which you owe to God or to your fellow men, and yet you
are idle!" -Ibid., pp. 203. 204.
Mistaken Ideas of Success o Monday
May 9
3. How did the Lord show, in the past, that success does not depend on numbers?
1 Samuel 14:6 (last part). Give two examples. Judges 7:19, 20; 1 Samuel 14:
12-15.
"Success does not depend upon numbers. God can deliver by few as well as by
many. He is honored not so much by the great numbers as by the character of those
who serve Him." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 550.
4. How did the Lord correct Elijah's idea of success? 1 Kings 19:10-12.
"It is not always the most learned presentation of God's truth that convicts and
converts the soul. Not by eloquence or logic are men's hearts reached, but by the sweet
influences of the Holy Spirit, which operate quietly yet surely in transforming and
developing character. It is the still small voice of the Spirit of God that has power to
change the heart." -Prophets and Kings, p. 169.
"Human strength is weakness, human wisdom is folly. Our success does not de-
pend on our talents or learning, but on our living connection with God. The truth is
shorn of its power when preached by men who are seeking to display their own learning
and ability. Such men display also that they know very little of experimental religion,
that they are unsanctified in heart and life and are filled with vain conceit. They do
not learn of Jesus. They cannot present to others a Saviour with whom they themselves
are not acquainted."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 158, 159.
Trusting in the Omnipotent Hand o Tuesday
May 10
5. In what practice did the early Christians find their source of strength? Mat-
thew 18:19; Romans 15:30; James 5:16 (last part). What is the advice of the
Spirit of Prophecy on this point?
"These workers can never attain the highest success until they learn the secret of
strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, to wait upon God for a
renewal of physical, mental, and spiritual power." -Education, pp. 260, 261.
"The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian are
,
J not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor of men. They
are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest,
agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 203.
6. In whom did they trust for guidance, strength, and success? 1 Timothy 4: 10.
"God will do great things for those who trust in Him. The reason why His professed
people have no greater strength is that they trust so much to their own wisdom, and do
not give the Lord an opportunity to reveal His power in their behalf. He will help His
believing children in every emergency if they will place their entire confidence in Him
and faithfully obey Him." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 493.
Harmony and Obedience o Wednesday
May 11
7. What condition gave success to the work of the disciples? Acts 1:14; 2:46.
How did Paul and Peter emphasize the importance of Christian unity? Ro-
mans 15:5; Philippians 1:27; 1 Peter 3:8.
-25 -
"Unity of action is necessary to success. An army in battle would become confused
and be defeated if the individual soldiers should move according to their own impulses
instead of acting in harmony under the direction of a competent general. The soldiers
of Christ also must act in harmony. A few converted souls, uniting for one grand pur-
pose under one head, will achieve victories in every encounter."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 139.
8. How was it made plain to the people of God, since the days of old, that prosper-
ity depends upon obedience to the word of God? Deuteronomy 29:9; 1 Chron-
icles 22:13; 2 Chronicles 20:20 (last part).
"Obedience to every word of God is another condition of success. Victories are not
gained by ceremonies or display, but by simple obedience to the highest General, the
Lord God of heaven. He who trusts in this Leader will never know defeat. Defeat comes
in depending on human methods, human inventions, and placing the divine secondary.
Obedience was the lesson that the Captain of the Lord's host sought to teach the vast
armies of Israel-obedience in things in which they could see no success. When there
is obedience to the voice of our Leader, Christ will conduct His battles in ways that will
surprise the greatest powers of earth."- Testimonies. vol. 6, p. 140.
Perseverance and Diligence D Thursday
May 12
9. What lesson did Elisha try to teach Joash, the king of Israel? 2 Kings 13:15-
19. How did Paul emphasize the importance of perseverance? Ephesians
6:18.
"When God opens the way for the accomplishment of a certain work and gives
assurance of success, the chosen instrumentality must do all in his power to bring about
the promised result. In proportion to the enthusiasm and perseverance with which the
work is carried forward will be the success given. God can work miracles for His peo-
ple only as they act their part with untiring energy." -Prophets and Kings. p. 263.
10. How does the Bible teach that diligence is an important key to success? Prov-
erbs 22:29. How does this principle work in our Christian experience? 2 Peter
1:5-10.
"Persevering diligence working in faith, will always be crowned with success."-
QUALIFICATIONS
FOR CHRISTIAN SERVICE
"Every worker should test his own qualifications by the word of God. Have the
men who are handling sacred things a clear understanding, a right perception, of
things of eternal interest? Will they consent to yield to the working of the Holy
Spirit? or do they permit themselves to be controlled by their own hereditary and
cultivated tendencies? It becomes all to examine themselves whether they be in
the faith."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 259.
1. What principles of piety and justice were to guide the rulers among God's peo-
ple in the days of Moses and Joshua? Exodus 18:21 (first part); Deuteronomy
1:16, 17; Joshua 1:7,8.
"When choosing seventy elders to share with him the responsibilities of leader-
ship, Moses was careful to select, as his helpers, men possessing dignity, sound judg-
ment, and experience. In his charge to these elders at the time of their ordination, he
outlined some of the qualifications that fit a man to be a wise ruler in the church."- The
Acts of the Apostles, p. 94.
2. What principle did David urge upon those bearing the burden of the work of
God in his day? 1 Chronicles 28:1,8. What charge did David give to his suc-
cessor on the throne? 1 Chronicles 28:9, 10.
3. What standard was set for those who were called to be leaders in the early
Christian church? Acts 6:3; Titus 1:7-9. What armor must be worn by every-
good soldier of Christ? Ephesians 6:11.
"The same principles of piety and justice that were to guide the rulers among God's
people in the time of Moses and of David, were also to be followed by those given the
oversight of the newly organized church of God in the gospel dispensation. In the work
of setting things in order in all the churches, and ordaining suitable men to act as of-
ficers, the apostles held to the high standards of leadership outlined in the Old Testa-
ment Scriptures." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 95.
4. What further qualifications did Paul mention regarding the election of church
leaders? 1 Timothy 3:1-12. What qualifications did Peter emphasize? 1 Peter
5:2,3.
- 27-
"God is not glorified by leaders in the church who seek to drive the sheep. No, no.
'Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by con-
straint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords
over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.' There is a wide field for the
elders and the helpers in every church. They are to feed the flock of God with pure
provender, thoroughly winnowed from the chaff, the poisonous mixture of error. You
who have any part to act in the church of God, be sure that you act wisely in feeding
the flock of God; for its prosperity much depends upon the quality of this food."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 942.
"Only those who are thus taught of God, those who possess the inward working of
the Spirit, and in whose life the Christ-life is manifested, are to stand as representative
men, to minister in behalf of the church."- The Desire of Ages, p. 805.
The First Qualification o Tuesday
May 17
5. What is the first qualification that anyone must have before he can be a shep-
herd? John 21:15-17.
"The question that Christ had put to Peter was significant. He mentioned only one
condition of discipleship and service. 'Lovest thou Me?' He said. This is the essential
qualification. Though Peter might possess every other, yet without the love of Christ
he could not be a faithful shepherd over the Lord's flock. Knowledge,benevolence,
eloquence, gratitude, and zeal are all aids in the good work; but without the love of
Jesus in the heart, the work of the Christian minister is a failure."-TheDesireof Ages, p. 815.
"A true shepherd will have an interest in all that relates to the welfare of the flock,
feeding, guiding, and defending them. He will carry himself with great wisdom and will
manifest a tender consideration for all, being courteous and compassionate to all, es-
pecially to the tempted, the afflicted, and the desponding."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 228, 229.
6. What cross must a true shepherd be willing to carry? Ma.tthew 16:24.
"A minister of Christ, a teacher of the truth, a true shepherd, is in one sense a serv-
ant of all, anticipating the wants of those who need help, and knowing how to be useful
here and there in the great work of saving souls. A man who professes to teach the
truth, and goes just where he pleases, and works when and how he pleases, yet shuns
responsibilities, is not bearing the cross after Christ nor fulfilling the commission of a
gospel minister. Few know by experience what it is to suffer for Christ's sake. They
desire to be like Christ, but wish to avoid poverty and crucifixion. They would gladly
be with Him in glory, but do not love to come to Him through much self-denial and trib-
ulation."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 650.
Two Kinds of Shepherds o Wednesday
May 18
7. What contrast does Christ establish when He calls Himself the "Good Shep-
herd"? John 10:11,12.
"Jesus calls Himself the 'Good Shepherd.' He does this in contrast with those who
occupy positions of trust in connection with the church, but who have no right to these
places, because they put a wrong mold upon the work. What is natural will appear."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 915.
8. What warning did the Lord give through Ezekiel against incompetent shep-
herds in Israel? Ezekiel 34:2-6.
- 28-
"Upon the ministers of God rests a solemn, serious charge. They will be called to
a strict account for the manner in which they have discharged their responsibility. If
they do not tell the people of the binding claims of God's law, if they do not preach the
Word with clearness, but confuse the minds of the people by their own interpretations,
they are shepherds who feed themselves, but neglect to feed the flock. They make of
none effect the law of Jehovah, and souls perish because of their unfaithfulness. The
blood of these souls will be upon their heads. God will call them to account for their
unfaithfulness. But this will in no wise excuse those who listened to the sophistry of
men, discarding the Word of God. God's law is a transcript of His character. And His
word is not Yea and Nay, but Yea and Amen." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 4, p. 1164.
A Timely Warning D Thursday
May 19
9. What class of men does God not choose as church leaders? Jude 16-19. Why
cannot God use men who just want to have their own, independent way? How
do we show, in church capacity, that "in union there is strength"?
"Men who move in accordance with their own strong traits of character, refusing
to yoke up with others who have had a long experience in the work of God, will become
blinded by self-confidence, unable to discern between the false and the true. It is not
safe for such ones to be chosen as leaders in the church; for they would follow their
own judgment and plans, regardless of the judgment of their brethren."-The Acts 01 the
Apostles, p. 279.
"The evils of self-esteem and an unsanctified independence, which most impair
our usefulness and which will prove our ruin if not overcome, spring from selfishness.
'Counsel together' is the message which has been again and again repeated to me by
the angel of God. By influencing one man's judgment, Satan may endeavor to control
matters to suit himself. He may succeed in misleading the minds of two persons; but,
when several consult together, there is more safety. Every plan will be more closely
criticized; every advance move more carefully studied. Hence there will be less danger
of precipitate, ill-advised moves, which would bring confusion, perplexity, and defeat.
In union there is strength. In division there is weakness and defeat."- Testimonies, vol. 5,
pp. 29, 30.
10. What is the responsibility of the ministers and of the church when it must be
decided who is fit for the holy work? Titus 1:5; 1 Timothy 5:22. What does
the Spirit of Prophecy say in this regard?
"I saw that you had thought this one and that one were called to labor in the field,
when you know nothing of the matter. You cannot read the heart. If you had drunk
deep of the truth of the third angel's message, you would not be so free to tell who were
called of God, and who were not. The fact that one can pray and talk well is no evidence
that God has called him.... I saw that God had laid upon His chosen ministers the duty
of deciding who was fit for the holy work; and in union with the church and the mani-
fest tokens of the Holy Spirit, they were to decide who should go and who were unfit
to go."- Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 208, 209.
"I saw that the church should feel their responsibility and should look carefully and
attentively at the lives, qualifications, and general course of those who profess to be
teachers. If unmistakable evidence is not given that God has called them, and that the
THE SPIRIT OF DISUNION
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace. Discord and strife are the work of
Satan and the fruit of sin. If we would as a people enjoy peace and love, we must
put away our sins; we must come into harmony with God, and we shall be in har-
mony with one another."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 169.
me scattereth" (Luke 11:23).
A Means ofPrompt Identification D Sunday
May 22
1. How can we easily distinguish those who are with Christ from those who are
against Christ? Luke 11:23.
"It is essential that all shall know what atmosphere surrounds their own souls,
whether they are in copartnership with the enemy of righteousness, and unconsciously
doing his work, or whether they are linked up with Christ, doing His work, and seeking
to establish souls more firmly in the truth." -Selecled Messages, book 2, p. 70.
"If any are employed whose influence is of a character to lead away from God and
the truth, there should not be a moment's question as to the disposal of their cases.
They should be separated from the office at once, for they are scattering from Christ
instead of gathering with Him. They are virtually servants of Satan."- Teslimonies, vol. 4,
p.205.
2. What is the seventh abomination that the Lord hates most? Proverbs 6:16-
19. What should we know about anyone who, though professing to know the
truth and claiming to be doing the work of God, is actually sowing the seeds of
discord in the church?
"There are men who are ever talking and gossiping and bearing false witness, who
sow the seeds of discord and engender strife. Heaven looks upon this class as Satan's
most efficient servants."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 607.
"Satan would be pleased to have anyone and everyone become his allies to weaken
the confidence of brother in brother, and to sow discord among those who profess to
believe the truth. Satan can accomplish his purposes most successfully through pro-
fessed friends of Christ who are not walking and working in Christ's lines. Those who
in mind and heart are turning away from the Lord's special work for this time, those
who do not cooperate with Him in establishing souls in the faith by leading them to
heed His words of warning, are doing the work of the enemy of Christ." -Selected Mes-
sages, book 2, p. 70.
How Satan Deceives D Monday
May 23
3. What warning refers to those who exalt their individual judgment as supreme
and despise the voice of the church? Isaiah 5:21.
- 30-
"Those who are inclined to regard their individual judgment as supreme are in
grave peril. It is Satan's studied effort to separate such ones from those who are chan-
nels of light, through whom God has wrought to build up and extend His work in the
earth. To neglect or despise those whom God has appointed to bear the responsibili-
ties of leadership in connection with the advancement of the truth, is to reject the means
that He has ordained for the help, encouragement, and strength of His people. For
any worker in the Lord's cause to pass these by, and to think that his light must come
through no other channel than directly from God, is to place himself in a position where
he is liable to be deceived by the enemy, and overthrown." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 164.
4. What instruction was given to the early Christians in regard to disorderly ele-
ments in the church? I Thessalonians 5:14 (first part). What does the Spirit
of Prophecy say about these deceived souls?
"In the apostles' day there were some misguided souls who claimed to believe in
Christ, yet refused to show respect to His ambassadors. They declared that they fol-
lowed no human teacher, but were taught directly by Christ without the aid of the min-
isters of the gospel. They were independent in spirit and unwilling to submit to the
voice of the church. Such men were in grave danger of being deceived."-TheAetsofthe
Apostles, pp. 278, 279.
A Stratagem to Hinder the Work o Tuesday
May 24
5. How did Satan act to hinder the work of the apostles? Give examples. Acts
13:6-8; 2 Timothy 4:14,15; Galatians 1:6, 7. What agents does the enemy
use to turn God's workers away from their appointed work?
"It is Satan's work to tempt minds. He will insinuate his wily suggestions and stir
up doubting, questioning, unbelief, and distrust of the words and acts of the one who
stands under responsibilities and who is seeking to carry out the mind of God in his
labors. It is the special purpose of Satan to pour upon and around the servants of God's
choice, troubles, perplexities, and opposition, so that they will be hindered in their work
and, if possible, discouraged. Jealousies, strife, and evil surmising will counteract, in
a great measure, the very best efforts that God's servants, appointed to a special work,
may be able to put forth.
"Satan's plan is to drive them from the post of duty by working through agents.
All whom he can excite to distrust and suspicion he will use as his instruments. The
position of Moses in carrying the burdens that he bore for the Israel of God was not
appreciated. There is in the nature of man, when not under the direct influence of the
Spirit of God, a disposition to envy, jealousy, and cruel distrust, which, if not subdued,
will lead to a desire to undermine and tear down others, while selfish spirits will seek
to build themselves up upon their ruins."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 343.
6. What is written about shepherds who neglect their duty to protect the flock
from the pernicious influence of Satan's missionaries? John 10:12, 13. Ac-
cording to an example mentioned by Sister White, what appearance do these
"missionaries" often put on?
"These brothers ... are naturally arbitrary, dictatorial, and self-sufficient. They
do not consider others better than themselves. They are envious and jealous of any
member of the church who, they think, will be esteemed more highly than themselves.
They profess conscientiousness; but they strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. ...
"Their smooth manner of relating things has such an appearance of honesty and
genuine interest for the cause of God that it has a tendency to deceive and becloud the
minds of those who hear them.... If the ministers of the word, who profess to be con-
- 31-
nected with God, cannot discern the influence of such men, they are unfit to stand as
teachers of the truth of God."- Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 323, 324.
A Great Delusion o Wednesday
May 25
7. What do some people mistake for true light? Isaiah 50: 11. What did the serv-
ant of the Lord say about a brother who wanted to force his judgment and
opinions upon the body of believers? What must an individual do before he
can be given permission to present his peculiar views to the church?
"He is a ready talker and will persistently urge his opinions and will not yield to
the weight of evidence against him. It is cruel for him to stand in the way of the pros-
perity of the church, as he has done. The world is large; he has all the privileges that he
can ask of going out among unbelievers and converting them to his theories; and when
he can present a well-organized body that he has been the means of converting from
sin to righteousness, then, and not before, should he press his peculiar views upon the
church of God, which is pained and disheartened with his darkness and error. He has
no right to build upon another man's foundation his wood, hay, and stubble to be con-
sumed by the fires of the last day."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 447, 448.
8. How was the apostolic church afflicted by individuals who did not understand
the principle of church unity? 1 John 2:19. How did Satan disturb the early
Adventists with the same problem?
"No greater delusion can deceive the human mind than that which leads men to
indulge a self-confident spirit, to believe that they are right and in the light, when they
are drawing away from God's people, and their cherished light is darkness.
"The class in - who have been drawing off from the body have possessed a hard,
bitter spirit against those whom God is using as His instruments to bring His people
up united upon the only true platform. Their spirit is opposed to the work of God, and
their influence has brought reproach upon the cause of God, and has made our faith
disgusting to unbelievers, and caused Satan to exult."- Testimonies. vol. 1, p. 333.
A Serious Warning o Thursday
May 26
9. What hindrance must be removed before the Lord will add new souls to the
church? Proverbs 22:10. What alternative does the Lord place before the
troublemakers?
"A holy God will not bring out souls to the truth to come under such an influence
as has existed in the church. Our heavenly Father is too wise to bring souls into the
truth to be molded by the influence of these men who are unconsecrated in heart and
life. These men are not in harmony with the truth. They are not in union with the body,
but are drawing off from the church. They are working at cross purposes with those
whom God is using to bring souls into the truth."-Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 238.
"They [some unconverted ones] feel grieved and injured, and withdraw themselves
from the assemblies of the saints. They forsake the assembling of themselves together,
for then their consciences are not so disturbed. They soon lose their interest in the
meetings and their love for the truth, and, unless they entirely reform, will go back and
take their position with the rebel host who stand under the black banner of Satan."-
Ibid., vol. 1, p. 548.
"We are to work like soldiers in an army. We are not to step out of the ranks, and
begin to work on our own account." -Selected Messages. book 2, p. 71.
- 32-
10. How does the word of God warn against moving independently from the body?
Isaiah 8:12; Romans 16:17, 18.
"Notwithstanding all the evidences that God has been leading the body, there are,
and will continue to be, those who profess the Sabbath, who will move independent of
the body, and believe and act as they choose. Their views are confused. Their scat-
a
tered state is standing testimony that God is not with them."- Testimonies, vol. I, p. 420.
"God wants His people to counsel together, to be a united church, in Christ a per-
fect whole. The only safety for us is to enter into the counsels of heaven, ever seeking
to do the will of God, to become laborers together with Him. No one company is to form
a confederacy, and say, 'We are going to take this work, and carry it on in our own way;
and if it does not go as we want it to, we will not give our influence to have it go at all.'
This is Satan's voice, not God's. Do not obey such suggestions."-SelectedMessages, book 2,
p.374.
"But if you bind yourself up with those of your mind, apart from the church, which
is Christ's body, you will make a confederacy that will be broken to pieces; for no union
can stand but that which God has framed." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 161.
A COMMON SNARE OF SATAN
"Do not forget that the most dangerous snares which Satan has prepared for the
church will come through its own members who do not love God supremely or their
neighbor as themselves. Satan is continually striving to wedge himself in between
brethren. He seeks to gain control of those who claim to believe the truth, but who
are unconverted."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 477.
KEY TEXT: "Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to
draw away disciples after them" (Acts 20:30).
Conspiracy 0 Sunday
May 29
1. Give the names of three men who were used by Satan to conspire against the
authority of the church in the days of Moses. Numbers 16: 1,2. How did they
venture upon "their work of disaffection"?
"It was pride and ambition that prompted Lucifer to complain of the government
of God, and to seek the overthrow of the order which had been established in heaven.
Since his fall it has been his object to infuse the same spirit of envy and discontent, the
same ambition for position and honor, into the minds of men. He thus worked upon the
minds of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, to arouse the desire for self-exaltation and ex-
cite envy, distrust, and rebellion. Satan caused them to reject God as their leader, by
rejecting the men of God's appointment. Yet while in their murmuring against Moses
and Aaron they blasphemed God, they were so deluded as to think themselves right-
eous, and to regard those who had faithfully reproved their sins as actuated by Satan."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 403.
"Professing great interest in the prosperity of the people, they first whispered their
discontent to one another, and then to leading men of Israel. Their insinuations were
so readily received that they ventured still further, and at last they really believed them-
selves to be actuated by zeal for God." -Ibid.. pp. 396, 397.
2. How do the actions of some people show that they are under the control of Sa-
tan? Give an example. Numbers 16:3.
"Those who set themselves against the government of God have entered into an
alliance with the arch-apostate, and he will exercise his power and cunning to captivate
the senses and mislead the understanding. He will cause everything to appear in a false
light. Like our first parents, those who are under his bewitching spell see only the great
benefits to be received by transgression.
- 34-
"No stronger evidence can be given of Satan's delusive power than that many who
are thus led by him deceive themselves with the belief that they are in the service of
God. When Korah, Dathan, and Abiram rebelled against the authority of Moses, they
thought they were opposing only a human leader, a man like themselves; and they came
to believe that they were verily doing God service. But in rejecting God's chosen in-
strument, they rejected Christ; they insulted the Spirit of God. So, in the days of Christ,
the Jewish scribes and elders, who professed great zeal for the honor of God, crucified
his Son. The same spirit still exists in the hearts of those who set themselves to follow
their own will in opposition to the will of God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 635.
How Satan Poisons Human Minds D Monday
May 30
3. What were the basic arguments of those who opposed the established author-
ity? What appeal did Moses make to the congregation? Numbers 16:26.
"In this work of disaffection there was greater harmony and union of views and
feelings among these discordant elements than had ever been known to exist before.
Korah's success in gaining the larger part of the congregation of Israel on his side led
him to feel confident that he was wise and correct in judgment, and that Moses was
indeed usurping authority that threatened the prosperity and salvation of Israel. He
claimed that God had opened the matter to him and laid upon him the burden of chang-
ing the government of Israel just before it was too late. He stated ... that the people
only wanted to have their rights; they wanted individual independence."-Testimonies.
vol. 3, p. 346.
4. What warning should enable us to identify and oppose Satan's missionary
work? 2 Timothy 3:1-5,7-9.
"It is a most serious matter to go from house to house, and under pretense of doing
missionary work, cast in the seed of mistrust and suspicion. Each one speedily germi-
nates, and there is created a distrust of God's servants, who have His message to bear
to the people. When God speaks through His servants, the seed [of mistrust and sus-
picion] sown has developed into a root of bitterness. The word falls upon hearts that
will not hear, on hearts that will not respond. No earthly or heavenly power can find
access to the soul.
"Who is accountable for these souls? Who shall eradicate that poisonous root of
bitterness that has prevented them from receiving the word of the Lord? A good sister
or a brother planted the evil seed, but how can that one restore the soul thus imperiled?
The tongue that should have been used to the glory of God in speaking words of hope
and faith and confidence in God's workmen has turned away a soul from Jesus Christ.
Those who themselves despised the words of Christ, and refused to hear His voice and
to be converted, have leavened other minds with the leaven of evil surmisings and evil-
speaking.
5. How did Satan work through Absalom to cause trouble in Israel? 2 Samuel
15:1-6.
- 35-
"The influence of David's listlessness and irresolution extended to his subordi-
nates; negligence and delay characterized the administration of justice. Absalom art-
fully turned every cause of dissatisfaction to his own advantage. Day by day this man
of noble mien might be seen at the gate of the city, where a crowd of suppliants waited
to present their wrongs for redress. Absalom mingled with them and listened to their
grievances, expressing sympathy with their sufferings and regret at the inefficiency
of the government." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 729, 730.
6. What should be remembered by those who dare despise, accuse or reject the
duly appointed leaders of the church? 2 Peter 2:10-12. How does God deal
with those who make mistakes? Give an example. Galatians 2:11.
"The Bible specially teaches us to beware of lightly bringing accusation against
those whom God has called to act as His ambassadors.... He who has placed upon
men the heavy responsibility of leaders and teachers of His people will hold the people
accountable for the manner in which they treat His servants." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.
386.
"It is hardly possible for men to offer a greater insult to God than to despise and
reject the instrumentalities that He has appointed to lead them."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p.
355.
"God permits men to be placed in positions of responsibility. When they err, He
has power to correct or to remove them. We should be careful not to take into our hands
the work of judging that belongs to God." -Gospel Workers, p. 474.
Led by the Wrong Spirit o Wednesday
7. Who, among the twelve apostles, was Satan's special agent? John 6:70, 71.
How did Satan use Judas to influence other minds?
"From that time he [Judas] expressed doubts that confused the disciples. He in-
troduced controversies and misleading sentiments, repeating the arguments urged by
the scribes and Pharisees against the claims of Christ. All the little and large troubles
and crosses, the difficulties and the apparent hindrances to the advancement of the
gospel, Judas interpreted as evidences against its truthfulness. He would introduce
texts of Scripture that had no connection with the truths Christ was presenting. These
texts, separated from their connection, perplexed the disciples, and increased the dis-
couragement that was constantly pressing upon them. Yet all this was done by Judas
in such a way as to make it appear that he was conscientious. And while the disciples
were searching for evidence to confirm the words of the Great Teacher, Judas would
lead them almost imperceptibly on another track."- The Desire of Ages, p. 719.
8. How did Paul warn the church against the work of Satan? Acts 20:29, 30.
What attitude characterizes those who are led by evil spirits?
"Satan is permitted to come in, and through his specious deceptions and delusions
he leads those who are not learning of Christ meekness and lowliness of heart, to take
a different line from the church, and break up, if possible, the unity of the church. Men
arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after themselves. They claim
that God has given them great light; but how do they act under its influence? Do they
pursue the course that the two disciples pursued on their journey to Emmaus? When
they received light, they returned and found those whom God had led and was still
leading, and told them how they had seen Jesus and had talked with Him.
"Have the men who have claimed to have light concerning the church pursued this
course? Have they gone to those who are chosen of God to bear a living testimony, and
- 36-
given them evidence that this light would better qualify them to prepare a people to
stand in the great day of God? Have they sought counsel of those who have been and
are still bearing the truth, and giving to the world the last message of warning? Have
they counseled with those who have had a deep experience in the things of God?" - Tes-
timonies to Ministers. pp. 48. 49.
When Minds Yield to the Influence of Satan D Thursday
June 2
9. Why could Lucifer not be dealt with immediately when he started his defec-
tion? 2 Peter 2:4. How does the influence of mind on mind work as a strong
power for evil? Who are often found among the first victims of Satan's cor·
rupting influence? 1 Thessalonians 5:14 (last part).
"In so deceptive a way did he [Lucifer] work that the sentiments that he inculcated
could not be dealt with until they had developed in the minds of those who received
them.
"The influence of mind on mind, so strong a power for good .when sanctified, is
equally strong for evil in the hands of those opposed to God. This power Satan used in
his work of instilling evil into the minds of the angels, and he made it appear that he
was seeking the good of the universe....
"Cast out of heaven, Satan set up his kingdom in this world, and ever since, he has
been untiringly striving to seduce human beings from their allegiance to God. He uses
the same power that he used in heaven-the influence of mind on mind. Men become
tempters of their fellow men. The strong, corrupting sentiments of Satan are cherished,
and they exert a masterly, compelling power. Under the influence of these sentiments,
men bind up with one another in confederacies."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments). vol. 7. p. 973.
10. How did perverted minds, in the days of Christ, attribute to Satan the work
of the Holy Spirit? Luke 11:14, 15. How have we been warned of the danger
of sinning against the Holy Ghost?
"What constitutes the sin against the Holy Ghost? It is willfully attributing to Sa-
tan the work of the Holy Spirit. For example, suppose that one is a witness of the spe-
cial work of the Spirit of God. He has convincing evidence that the work is in harmony
with the Scriptures, and the Spirit witnesses with his spirit that it is of God. Afterward,
however, he falls under temptation; pride, self-sufficiency, or some other evil trait, con-
trols him; and rejecting all the evidence of its divine character, he declares that that
which he had before acknowledged to be the power of the Holy Spirit was the power
of Satan."- Testimonies. vol. 5. p. 634.
LABOR FOR THE ERRING
"Christ ... gives no liberty for any man to pass judgment upon others.... But on
the church in its organized capacity He places a responsibility for the individual
members. Toward those who fall into sin, the church has a duty, to warn, to in-
struct, and if possible to restore."-The Desire of Ages, p. 805.
An Unavoidable Duty D Sunday
June 5
1. What class of church members need special help? 1 Corinthians 11:30. What
corrective measures should be taken when a church member is involved in
any kind of wrongdoing? Galatians 6:1; James 5:20. How does the Spirit of
Prophecy warn those who leave wrong uncorrected?
"Many professed Christians look upon men who do not reprove and condemn
wrong, as men of piety and Christians indeed, while they think that those who stand
boldly in defense of the right, and will not yield their integrity to unconsecrated influ-
ences, lack piety and a Christian spirit.
"Those who stand in defense of the honor of God and maintain the purity of truth
at any cost will have manifold trials, as did our Saviour in the wilderness of tempta-
tion. While those who have yielding temperaments, who have not courage to condemn
wrong, but keep silent when their influence is needed to stand in defense of the right
against any pressure, may avoid many heartaches and escape many perplexities, they
will also lose a very rich reward, if not their own souls. Those who are in harmony with
God and who through faith in Him receive strength to resist wrong and stand in defense
of the right, will always have severe conflicts and will frequently have to stand almost
alone. But precious victories will be theirs while they make God their dependence."-
Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 302, 303.
2. What counsel is very important for those who are easy victims of negative in-
fluences? 1 Corinthians 15:33. What duty is placed upon the more spiritual
members of the church? 2 Timothy 4:2 (last part).
"If you turn from good counsel and choose to associate with those who you have
reason to suspect are not religiously inclined, although they profess to be Christians,
you will soon become like them." - Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 588, 589.
Specific Instructions D Monday
3. What specific instruction was given by the Lord for the purpose of reclaiming
the lost sheep? Matthew 18:11-15.
- 38-
"The ninety and nine sheep are left, and diligent search is made for the one that is
lost. The entire effort is made for the unfortunate sheep. So should the effort of the
church be directed in behalf of those members who are straying from the fold of Christ.
And have they wondered far away? do not wait till they return before you try to help
them, but go in search of them.
"When the lost sheep was found, it was borne home with joy, and much rejoicing
followed. This illustrates the blessed, joyful work of laboring for the erring. The church
that engages successfully in this work, is a happy church." -Life Sketches ofEllen G. White.
pp. 187, 188.
"Do not suffer sin upon your brother; but do not expose him, and thus increase
the difficulty, making the reproof seem like a revenge. Correct him in the way outlined
in the word of God."- Testimonies. vol. 7, pp. 260, 261.
4. How tactfully should one act when helping an erring soul? Proverbs 25:8,9.
"Give the erring one no occasion for discouragement. Suffer not a Pharisaical
hardness to come in and hurt your brother. Let no bitter sneer rise in mind or heart.
Let no tinge of scorn be manifest in the voice. If you speak a word of your own, if you
take an attitude of indifference, or show suspicion or distrust, it may prove the ruin of
a soul. He needs a brother with the Elder Brother's heart of sympathy to touch his heart
of humanity. Let him feel the strong clasp of a sympathizing hand, and hear the whis-
per, let us pray. God will give a rich experience to you both. Prayer unites us with one
another and with God. Prayer brings Jesus to our side, and gives to the fainting, per-
plexed soul new strength to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil. Prayer turns
aside the attacks of Satan." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 250.
"Do not reproach the Christian religion by jealousy and intolerance toward others.
This will but poorly recommend your belief to them. No one has ever been reclaimed
from a wrong position by censure and reproach, but many have thus been driven from
the truth and have steeled their hearts against conviction. A tender spirit, a gentle and
winning deportment, may save the erring and hide a multitude of sins. God requires
us to have that charity that 'suffereth long, and is kind.' "-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 65.
Specific Instructions (continued) o Tuesday
June 7
5. If the erring church member will not listen to you, what is your next step? Mat-
thew 18:16.
"Take with you those who are spiritually minded, and talk with the one in error in
regard to the wrong. He may yield to the united appeals of his brethren. As he sees
their agreement in the matter, his mind may be enlightened."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 262.
"It may be that their united influence will prevail where that of the first was un-
successful. Not being parties to the trouble, they will be more likely to act impartially,
and this fact will give their counsel greater weight with the erring one." - The Desire of
Ages, p. 441.
6. In case the second effort has also been unsuccessful, what is the third and last
step? Matthew 18: 17. What caution should, nevertheless, be used?
"If he will not hear them, then, and not till then, the matter is to be brought before
the whole body of believers. Let the members of the church, as the representatives of
Christ, unite in prayer and loving entreaty that the offender may be restored. The Holy
Spirit will speak through His servants, pleading with the wanderer to return to God.
- 39-
Paul the apostle, speaking by inspiration, says, 'As though God did beseech you by us:
we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.' 2 Corinthians 5:20. He who re-
jects this united overture has broken the tie that binds him to Christ, and thus has sev-
ered himself from the fellowship of the church. Henceforth, said Jesus, 'let him be unto
thee as an heathen man and a publican.' But he is not to be regarded as cut off from
the mercy of God. Let him not be despised or neglected by his former brethren, but be
treated with tenderness and compassion, as one of the lost sheep that Christ is still
seeking to bring to His fold." - The Desire of Ages, p. 441.
"Weare not to make it a matter of comment and criticism among ourselves; nor
even after it is told to the church, are we at liberty to repeat it to others. A knowledge
of the faults of Christians will be only a cause of stumbling to the unbelieving world;
and by dwelling upon these things, we ourselves can receive only harm; for it is by be-
holding that we become changed."-:-Ibid.
Victims of Wrong Influences D Wednesday
June 8
7. In the days of Nehemiah, how did some of the Jews oppose the work of God
and support the work of Satan? Nehemiah 6:10-12. What class of erring souls
are almost beyond help?
"Satan takes advantage of every unconsecrated element for the accomplishment
of his purposes. Among those who profess to be the supporters of God's cause there
are those who unite with His enemies and thus lay His cause open to the attacks of His
bitterest foes. Even some who desire the work of God to prosper will yet weaken the
hands of His servants by hearing, reporting, and half-believing the slanders, boasts, and
menaces of His adversaries. Satan works with marvelous success through his agents,
and all who yield to their influence are subject to a bewitching power that destroys the
wisdom of the wise and the understanding of the prudent." -Prophets and Kings, p. 645.
8. By whom will some believers be wrongly influenced? 2 Peter 2:18, 19. How
are we to help these victims?
"When there are among God's people those who have departed from the path of
humble obedience, those who have exalted self, those who have united with Satan in
accusing and condemning the men appointed of God to be ministers of salvation, shall
we keep silence for fear of hurting their feelings? ...
"To believe that evil must not be condemned because this would condemn those
who practice the evil, is to act in favor of falsehood ....
"Those who feel so very peaceable in regard to the works of the men who are spoil-
ing the faith of the people of God, are guided by a delusive sentiment.
"There is to be a constant conflict between good and evil. Those who are enlight-
ened by the Holy Spirit's power are to strive with every power of their being to snatch
the prey from the seductive influences of men who refuse to obey the word of God,
whether they be in high places or in low. Christ's property is not to pass out of His con-
trol into the control of the children of darkness." -Special Testimonies, Series B, No.2, pp. 9-11.
False Sympathizers D Thursday
June 9
9. How should we behave ourselves, bearing in mind that weak church members
will be influenced by our actions? Hebrews 12: 13. What damage will some of
these members cause when someone is to be disfellowshipped?
-40 -
"If persons are as deserving of being separated from the church as Satan was of
being cast out of heaven, they will have sympathizers. There is always a class who are
more influenced by individuals than they are by the Spirit of God and sound principles;
and, in their unconsecrated state, these are ever ready to take sides with the wrong and
give their pity and sympathy to the very ones who least deserve it. These sympathizers
have a powerful influence with others; things are seen in a perverted light, great harm
is done, and many souls are ruined. Satan in his rebellion took a third part of the angels.
They turned from the Father and from His Son, and united with the instigator of re-
bellion. With these facts before us we should move with the greatest caution. What can
we expect but trial and perplexity in our connection with men and women of peculiar
minds? We must bear this and avoid the necessity of rooting up the tares, lest the wheat
be rooted up also."- Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 114, 115.
10. Under normal circumstances, what discipline should have been applied to the
false teachers among the Galatians? Galatians 5:12. What lesson should we
learn from Paul's delay in taking that step?
"False teachers had brought to the Galatians doctrines that were opposed to the
gospel of Christ. Paul sought to expose and correct these errors. He greatly desired
that the false teachers might be separated from the church, but their influence had af-
fected so many of the believers that it seemed hazardous to take action against them.
There was danger of causing strife and division which would be ruinous to the spiritual
interests of the church. He therefore sought to impress upon his brethren the impor-
tance of trying to help one another in love."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 243.
"That They All May Be One" o Sunday
June 12
1. What will prove to the world the power of Christ to save sinners? John 17:20,
21.
"Through the working of the Holy Spirit upon the human mind, man is made com-
plete in Christ Jesus. Unity with Christ establishes a bond of unity with one another.
This unity is the most convincing proof to the world of the majesty and virtue of Christ,
and of His power to take away sin."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Commentsl. vol. 5.
p. 1148.
"The Saviour has presented before us how much will be gained in working out the
unity that will join one believer to another in the perfection of Christian love....
"The unity for which Christ prayed is a sacred pledge of discipleship. Those who
enter heaven must be one with Christ.... All true disciples are made members of the
royal family. All have the new heart, and all blend in perfect harmony. They speak the
same thing.... They love as brethren....
"Those who are so stubborn that they will not comply with the prayer of Christ will
be lawless, loveless, impolite. They could not be admitted into the family of heaven.
The truth cherished in the heart will work out a blessed unity among Christ's disciples
in the lower school of earth. The Lord is dishonored by the contention and strife caused
by the unsanctified dispositions of professing Christians." -Special Testimonies. Series B, No.
7, pp. 45, 46.
2. For what purpose did the Lord establish different offices and responsibilities
in the church? Ephesians 4:11-13.
"Those who have the unction from on high will in all their efforts encourage order,
discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can cooperate with them.
But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their endorsement upon irreg-
ularity, disorganization, and disorder. All these evils are the result of Satan's efforts
to weaken our forces, to destroy our courage, and prevent successful action. "-Testi-
monies to Ministers, p. 28.
"God is leading a people out from the world upon the exalted platform of eternal
truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. He will discipline and fit up
His people. They will not be at variance, one believing one thing and another having
faith and views entirely opposite, each moving independently of the body. Through
the diversity of the gifts and governments that He has placed in the church, they will
all come to the unity of the faith." -Ibid., p. 29.
Paul's Burden for the Church o Monday
June 13
3. What burden did the apostle Paul carry for the early Christians? 1 Corinthians
1:10. According to the Spirit of Prophecy, how can we ensure Christian unity?
"As we near the close of time, Satan comes down with great power, knowing that
his time is short. Especially will his power be exercised upon the remnant. He will war
against them, and seek to divide and scatter them, that they may grow weak and be
overthrown. The people of God should move understandingly, and should be united in
their efforts. They should be of the same mind, of the Same judgment; then their efforts
will not be scattered, but will tell forcibly in the upbuilding of the cause of present truth.
Order must be observed, and there must be union in maintaining order, or Satan will
take the advantage."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 210.
"'The church must flee to God's Word and become established upon gospel order,
which has been overlooked and neglected.' This is indispensably necessary in order to
bring the church into the unity of the faith." -Early Writings, p. 100.
4. Of what evil did Paul warn the believers? 1 Corinthians 12:24,25. What pro-
cedure is calculated to prevent divisions?
"Though we have an individual work and an individual responsibility before God,
we are not to follow our own independent judgment, regardless of the opinions and feel-
ings of our brethren; for this course would lead to disorder in the church."-Testimonies
to Ministers, p. 30.
United with Christ o Tuesday
June 14
5. With whom must Christians be united before they can be united among them-
selves? Colossians 2:19; Ephesians 4:15, 16.
"The cause of division and discord in families and in the church is separation from
Christ. To come near to Christ is to come near to one another. The secret of true unity in
the church and in the family is not diplomacy, not management, not a superhuman effort
to overcome difficulties-though there will be much of this to do-but union with Christ.
"Picture a large circle, from the edge of which are many lines all running to th~
center. The nearer these lines approach the center, the nearer they are to one another.
"Thus it is in the Christian life. The closer we come to Christ, the nearer we shall
be to one another. God is glorified as His people unite in harmonious action."-TheAd·
ventist Home, p. 179.
6. What evidence will prove that we have the Spirit of Christ? John 14:23.
"By beholding Christ, you will become changed, until you will hate your former
pride, your former vanity and self-esteem, your self-righteousness and unbelief. You
will cast these sins aside as a worthless burden, and walk humbly, meekly, trustfully,
before God. You will practice love, patience, gentleness, goodness, mercy, and every
grace that dwells in the child of God, and will at last find a place among the sanctified
and holy." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 388.
Bound Together by Love D Wednesday
June 15
7. If we are controlled by the Spirit of Christ, what will bind us together? John
13:34,35.
"When men are bound together, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they
show the working of an influence that is above every human influence. Where this one-
ness exists, it is evidence that the image of God is being restored in humanity, that a
new principle of life has been implanted." - The Desire of Ages, p. 678.
8. What subject does John emphasize in his epistles? 1 John 4:10-13. According
to the Spirit of Prophecy, what will happen if we have the love of Christ glow-
ing in our hearts?
"Many people may be brought together in a unity of religious faith whose opinions,
habits, and tastes in temporal matters are not in harmony; but if they have the love of
Christ glowing in their bosoms, and are looking forward to the same heaven as their
eternal home, they may have the sweetest and most intelligent communion together,
and a unity the most wonderful."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 65.
Obedience to the Truth D Thursday
June 16
9. If the truth (which is inseparable from Christ: John 14:6) abides in our hearts,
and we walk in all the light that we have received, what will be the sure result?
1 John 1:7.
"Those who are drinking from the same fountain of blessing will draw nearer to-
gether. Truth dwelling in the hearts of believers will lead to blessed and happy assimi-
lation. Thus will be answered the prayer of Christ that His disciples might be one even
as He is one with the Father. For this oneness every truly converted heart will be striv-
ing."-Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 100, 101.
10. What is the relationship between obedience to the law of God and Christian
unity? Isaiah 48:17, 18.
"Greater attention should be given to the subject of unity. What is the recipe for
the cure of the leprosy of strife and dissension? Obedience to the commandments of
A Problem A mong the Disciples D Sunday
June 19
1. What problem did the disciples have among themselves before they were fully
converted? Matthew 18:1.
"The strife for the highest place [among the early disciples] was the outworking of
that same spirit which was the beginning of the great controversy in the worlds above,
and which had brought Christ from heaven to die. There rose up before Him a vision
of Lucifer, the 'son of the morning,' in glory surpassing all the angels that surround the
throne, and united in closest ties to the Son of God. Lucifer had said, 'I will be like the
Most High' (Isaiah 14:12, 14); and the desire for self-exaltation had brought strife into
the heavenly courts, and had banished a multitude of the hosts of God. Had Lucifer
really desired to be like the Most High, he would never have deserted his appointed
place in heaven; for the spirit of the Most High is manifested in unselfish ministry.
Lucifer desired God's power, but not His character. He sought for himself the highest
place, and every being who is actuated by his spirit will do the same. Thus alienation,
discord, and strife will be inevitable. Dominion becomes the prize of the strongest. The
kingdom of Satan is a kingdom of force; every individual regards every other as an ob-
stacle in the way of his own advancement, or a steppingstone on which he himself may
climb to a higher place."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 435, 436.
2. What request was made by two of Christ's disciples? Matthew 20:20-22.
How would they share the highest honors of Christ? Matthew 20:23, 24.
"Jesus bears tenderly with them, not rebuking their selfishness in seeking prefer-
ence above their brethren. He reads their hearts, He knows the depth of their attach-
ment to Him. Their love is not a mere human affection; though defiled by the earthli-
ness of its human channel, it is an outflowing from the fountain of His own redeeming
love. He will not rebuke, but deepen and purify. He said, 'Are ye able to drink of the
cup that 1 shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that 1am baptized with?'
-45 -
They recall His mysterious words, pointing to trial and suffering, yet answer confi-
dently, 'We are able.' They would count it highest honor to prove their loyalty by shar-
ing all that is to befall their Lord.
" 'Ye shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am bap-
tized with,' He said; before Him a cross instead of a throne, two malefactors His com-
panions at His right hand and His left. John and James were to share with their Master
in suffering; the one, first of the brethren to perish with the sword; the other, longest
of all to endure toil, and reproach, and persecution." -The Desire of Ages, pp. 548, 549.
A Fundamental Distinction D Monday
June 20
3. How did Christ explain the difference between the kingdoms of the world and
the kingdom of God? Matthew 20:25-28.
"In the kingdoms of the world, position meant self-aggrandizement. The people
were supposed to exist for the benefit of the ruling classes. Influence, wealth, educa-
tion, were so many means of gaining control of the masses for the use of the leaders.
The higher classes were to think, decide, enjoy, and rule; the lower were to obey and
serve. Religion, like all things else, was a matter of authority. The people were ex-
pected to believe and practice as their superiors directed. The right of man as man, to
think and act for himself, was wholly unrecognized.
"Christ was establishing a kingdom on different principles. He called men, not to
authority, but to service, the strong to bear the infirmities of the weak. Power, position,
talent, education, placed their possessor under the greater obligation to serve his fel-
lows." - The Desire of Ages, p. 550.
"When James and John made their request for pre-eminence, He had said, 'Who-
soever will be great among you, let him be your minister.' Matthew 20:26. In My king-
dom the principle of preference and supremacy has no place. The only greatness is
the greatness of humility. The only distinction is found in devotion to the service of
others." -Ibid., p. 650.
4. By what characteristic, especially, should the true people of God be distin-
guished from the rest of the world? Matthew 11:28-30; Mark 10:44.
"Those who profess our exalted faith, who are keeping God's commandments and
expecting the soon coming of our Lord, should be distinct and separate from the world
around them, a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Among the peculiarities which
should distinguish God's people from the world in these last days, is their humility and
meekness. 'Learn of Me,' says Christ; 'for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall
find rest unto your souls.' Here is the repose which so many crave and in vain spend
time and money to obtain. Instead of being ambitious to be equal to another in honor
and position, or perhaps even higher, we should seek to be the humble, faithful serv-
ants of Christ." - Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 225, 226.
A Blessed Brotherly Fellowship D Tuesday
June 21
5. What is the basic principle of Christian fellowship? Matthew 23:8 (last part).
"Those who, in the spirit and love of Jesus, will become one with Him, will be in
close fellowship one with another, bound up by the silken cords of love. Then the ties
of human brotherhood would not be always on the strain, ready at any provocation to
- 46-
snap asunder. 'All ye are brethren' will be the sentiment of every child of faith. When
the followers of Christ are one with Him, there will be no first and last, no less respected
or less important ones. A blessed brotherly fellowship one with another will bind all
who truly receive the Lord Jesus Christ in a firm loyalty that cannot be broken. All will
be equally one with Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, pp. 1097,
1098.
6. What shows that John the Baptist was imbued with the true spirit that is to
characterize every Christian? John 3:26-30.
"God calls a man to do a certain work; and when he has carried it as far as he is
qualified to take it, the Lord brings in others, to carry it still farther. But, like John's
disciples, many feel that the success of the work depends on the first laborer. Attention
is fixed upon the human instead of the divine, jealousy comes in, and the work of God
is marred. The one thus unduly honored is tempted to cherish self-confidence. He does
not realize his dependence on God. The people are taught to rely on man for guidance,
and thus they fall into error, and are led away from God.
"The work of God is not to bear the image and superscription of man. From time
to time the Lord will bring in different agencies, through whom His purpose can best
be accomplished. Happy are they who are willing for self to be humbled, saying with
John the Baptist, 'He must increase, but I must decrease.''' -The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 182.
Respect and Diderence o Wednesday
June 22
7. What spirit of respect and deference was cultivated among the early Chris-
tians? 1 Thessalonians 5: 12, 13; Hebrews 13: 17.
"Reverence should be shown for God's representatives-for ministers, teachers,
and parents, who are called to speak and act in His stead. In the respect shown them,
God is honored.
"Courtesy, also is one of the graces of the Spirit and should be cultivated by all. It
has power to soften natures which without it would grow hard and rough. Those who
profess to be followers of Christ, and are at the same time rough, unkind, and uncour-
teous, have not learned of Jesus. Their sincerity may not be doubted, their uprightness
may not be questioned; but sincerity and uprightness will not atone for a lack of kind-
ness and courtesy." -Prophets and Kings, p. 237.
8. What rule of conduct was Peter inspired to write down for both young and old?
1 Peter 5:5. What event, which took place in the days of Elisha, still stands
as a warning? 2 Kings 2:23,24.
"Young men who have had only a few years of imperfect experience in the cause of
present truth ... should manifest a delicacy in taking positions contrary to the judg-
ment and opinions of those whose lives have been interwoven with the cause of God and
who have had an active part in this work for many years. God does not select to lead out
in His sacred, important work, men of immature judgment and great self-confidence.
Those who have not passed through the sufferings, trials, opposition, and privations
that have been endured to bring the work to its present condition of prosperity, should
cultivate modesty and humility. They should be carefulhow they become exalted, lest
they be overthrown." -Gospel Workers, p. 318.
Love, Cooperation and Unity o J:hursday
June 23
9. In the work of God, how are we to understand and apply the instruction in
Romans 12:10?
"God's servants are to work together, blending in kindly, courteous order, 'in honor
preferring one another.' Romans 12:10. There is to be no unkind criticism, no pulling
to pieces of another's work; and there are to be no separate parties. Every man to whom
the Lord has entrusted a message has his specific work. Each one has an individuality
of his own, which he is not to sink in that of any other man. Yet each is to work in har-
mony with his brethren. In their service God's workers are to be essentially onel No
one is to set himself up as a criterion, speaking disrespectfully of his fellow workers,
or treating them as inferior. Under God each is to do his appointed work, respected,
loved, and encouraged by the other laborers. Together they are to carry the work for-
ward to completion."- The Acts of Ihe Apostles, pp. 275, 276.
10. What principle, abiding in our hearts, will prove to the world that we are
Christ's followers indeed? What does the apostle John say concerning this
principle? 1 John 4:7-11.
"When the heavenly principle of etemallove fills the heart, it will flow out to others,
not merely because favors are received of them, but because love is the principle of
action and modifies the character, governs the impulses, controls the passions, sub-
dues enmity, and elevates and ennobles the affections. This love is not contracted so
as merely to include 'me and mine,' but is as broad as the world and as high as heaven,
and is in harmony with that of the angel workers. This love cherished in the soul sweet-
ens the entire life and sheds a refining influence on all around. Possessing it, we cannot
but be happy, let fortune smile or frown. If we love God with all the heart, we must love
His children also. This love is the Spirit of God. It is the heavenly adorning that gives
true nobility and dignity to the soul and assimilates our lives to that of the Master. No
matter how many good qualities we may have, however honorable and refined we may
consider ourselves, if the soul is not baptized with the heavenly grace of love to God
and one another, we are deficient in true goodness and unfit for heaven, where all is
love and unity."- Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 223, 224.
