FOREWORD
The lessons we will study during this quarter deal with the
subject, THE CHURCH AND THE WORK. Many important
truths-such as those which show us how to secure the spiritual
prosperity of the church, how to further the progress of the work,
how to meet church difficulties, how to close the door against
disorderly manifestations, how to ensure the peace of the church
-will be brought up in these lessons. The relationship between
Christ and the church, and between the church and its individual
members, should be clearly understood, and the instructions cal-
culated to promote unity, cooperation and love among the people
of God, must be impressed on the minds of the brethren, so that
the blessings of God may rest upon us as a people and as individ-
uals.
In the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy the purpose of organ-
ization, system, and order is very plain: On the one hand we are
not to allow formalism and machinery to prevail over the simplic-
ity of the gospel and the primitive godliness that characterized
the early Christian church, but on the other hand we are to un-
derstand that "thorough organization is essential" "to keep out
spurious uprisings," "to refute claims not endorsed by the word
of God," and to give "disorderly elements" no chance "to control
the work at this time" (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 228).
May the Spirit of God enlighten the minds of teachers and
students as they study these lessons!

A SANCTUARY IN
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA
Colombia lies in northwestern South America. It is

the only South American country that faces both the
Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans (Caribbean Sea). Its
area is 439,737 square miles. Its estimated population
was over 25 million in 1976. Most Colombians belong to
the Roman Catholic Church. The country is ripe for the
last message, and there is complete religious liberty.
Our brethren in Bogota, the capital city, are meet-
ing in a rented hall. They are making plans to build a
chapel and adjoining rooms for offices and other needs,
for the promoting of the work. Many more people would
come to their meetings, and the work there would grow
more rapidly if they had a church building in Bogota.
Although our brethren in Colombia are poor, they
are willing to continue making sacrifices toward the
carrying out of their plan. But the accomplishment of
their project will be possible only with the help of our
brethren in other countries. An appeal for a 13th Sab-
bath offering is therefore being directed to our people
everywhere. Please remember our Colombian brethren
and make a generous contribution.

ORGANIZATION
The church was organized for service. Everyone who becomes a follower of Christ
is to engage actively in the work of soul-saving. In this work-which is the highest
work on earth-unions and fields, institutions and departments, local churches
and groups, as well as individual members, all depend on one another, and are to
work in harmony with one another, as a wheel within a wheel, in agreement with
God's plan of organization. (Read Desire ofAges, pp. 822, 823; Selected Messages, book 1,
p.112.)

March 27
1. What was the first step in the organization of the Christian church? Mark
3:13, 14.
"It was at the ordination of the Twelve that the first step was taken in the organiza-
tion of the church that after Christ's departure was to carry on His work on the earth."-
The Acts of the Apostles. p. 18.
2. As the membership was growing, what further step was taken in the organiza-
tion of the church? Acts 6:1-6.
"There was necessity for a further distribution of the responsibilities which had
been borne so faithfully by a few during the earlier days of the church. The apostles
must now take an important step in the perfecting of gospel order in the church, by
laying upon others some of the burdens thus far borne by themselves.
"Summoning a meeting of the believers, the apostles were led by the Holy Spirit to
outline a plan for the better organization of all the working forces of the church. The
time had come, the apostles stated, when the spiritual leaders having the oversight of
the church should be relieved from the task of distributing to the poor and from similar
burdens, so that they might be free to carry forward the work of preaching the gos-

"Later in the history of the early church, when in various parts of the world many
groups of believers had been formed into churches, the organization of the church was

"As our numbers increased, it was evident that without some form of organization
there would be great confusion, and the work would not be carried forward success-

1. How do we know that a person who accepts Christ will be directed to the

evidence shows that those who follow Christ and the truth will be connected
with the church and respect the voice of the church?
"Very close and sacred is the relation between Christ and His church-He the bride-
groom, and the church the bride; He the head, and the church the body. Connection

"Christ and His church are inseparable. To neglect or despise those whom God has
appointed to lead out and to bear the responsibilities connected with His work and with

thians 10:32; 11:22. What arrangement has God established, and how dan-
gerous is it for any person to ignore this arrangement?
"The Lord in His wisdom has arranged that by means of the close relationship that
should be maintained by all believers, Christian shall be united to Christian and church
to church. Thus the human instrumentality will be enabled to cooperate with the divine.
Every agency will be subordinate to the Holy Spirit, and all the believers will be united
in an organized and well-directed effort to give to the world the glad tidings of the grace

"God has instituted no new method of reaching the children of men. If they cut
themselves off from heaven's appointed agencies to reprove. their sins, correct their
errors, and point out the path of duty, there is no way to reach them with any heavenly
communication. They are left in darkness and are ensnared and taken by the adver-

of the Christ whom he was persecuting, he was placed in direct communication with
the church, which is the light of the world. In this case Ananias represents Christ, and
also represents Christ's ministers upon the earth, who are appointed to act in His stead.
In Christ's stead Ananias touches the eyes of Saul, that they may receive sight. In
Christ's stead he places his hands upon him, and, as he prays in Christ's name, Saul
receives the Holy Ghost. All is done in the name and by the authority of Christ. Christ

"Thus Jesus gave sanction to the authority of His organized church and placed

1. When the early Christians were confronted with an important controversial
question, how did they act? Give an example. Acts 15:2, 6.
"When dissension arose in a local church, as later it did arise in Antioch and else-
where, and the believers were unable to come to an agreement among themselves, such
matters were not permitted to create a division in the church, but were referred to a
general council of the entire body of believers, made up of appointed delegates from
the various local churches, with the apostles and elders in positions of leading respon-
sibility. Thus the efforts of Satan to attack the church in isolated places were met by
concerted action on the part of all, and the plans of the enemy to disrupt and destroy
were thwarted."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 96.
2. How did the general council fulfill its God-given duty? Give an example. Acts

"The council which decided this case [referring to ceremonial laws imposed on
the Gentiles] was composed of apostles and teachers who had been prominent in rais-
ing up the Jewish and Gentile Christian churches, with chosen delegates from various
places....

tles and elders,' men of influence and judgment, framed and issued the decree, which

5. How are we to act as we follow the example of order and system set by the

"He [God] requires that order and system be observed in the conduct of church
affairs today no less than in the days of old. He desires His work to be carried forward
with thoroughness and exactness so that He may place upon it the seal of His approval.
Christian is to be united with Christian, church with church, the human instrumentality
cooperating with the divine, every agency subordinate to the Holy Spirit, and all com-
bined in giving to the world the good tidings of the grace of God." -The Acts of the Apostles,
p.96.
6. For what purpose did the apostles leave us an example in many things? 2 Thes-
salonians 3:7,9. In accordance with the order and system inherited from the
apostolic church, who has been vested with power to make decisions in our
days? .
"Never should the mind of one man or the minds of a few men be regarded as suf-
ficient in wisdom and power to control the work and to say what plans shall be fol-
lowed. But when, in a General Conference, the judgment of the brethren assembled
from all parts of the field is exercised, private independence and private judgment
must not be stubbornly maintained, but surrendered. Never should a laborer regard
as a virtue the persistent maintenance of his position of independence, contrary to the
decision of the general body.

7. Before the decision of the general council was issued, how, and through whom,
did Satan work? Acts 15:1,24. How did they act after the decision?
"Not all, however, were pleased with the decision; there was a faction of ambitious
and self-confident brethren who disagreed with it. These men assumed to engage in
the work on their own responsibility. They indulged in much murmuring and fault-
finding, proposing new plans and seeking to pull down the work of the men whom God
had ordained to teach the gospel message. From the first the church has had such ob-
stacles to meet and ever will have till the close of time." -The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 196, 197.

8. What class of professed believers have always been a great hindrance to the
progress of the work? Titus 1 :9-11. What warning has been given about those
who refuse to submit to the decisions of the general body of believers in united
council?
"The greater the responsibilities placed upon the human agent, and the larger his
opportunities to dictate and control, the more harm he is sure to do if he does not care-

9. If a member refuses to listen to the church, how must he be dealt with? Mat-
thew 18:17.
"If he will not heed the voice of the church, if he refuses all the efforts made to re-
claim him, upon the church rests the responsibility of separating him from fellowship.
His name should then be stricken from the books."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 262.
"He who despises the authority of the church despises the authority of Christ Him-
self."- The Desire of Ages, p. 806.
10. What decision of the church is ratified in heaven? Matthew 18:18.
"On the church has been conferred the power to act in Christ's stead. It is God's
instrumentality for the preservation of order and discipline among His people. To it
the Lord has delegated the power to settle all questions respecting its prosperity, pu-
rity, and order. Upon it rests the responsibility of excluding from its fellowship those
who are unworthy, who by their unchristlike conduct would bring dishonor on the truth.
Whatever the church does that is in accordance with the directions given in God's word
will be ratified in heaven."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 263.
"The world's Redeemer has invested great power with His church. He states the
rules to be applied in cases of trial with its members. After He has given explicit direc-
tions as to the course to be pursued, He says: 'Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye
shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever [in church discipline] ye
shall loose on earth shall be lossed in heaven.' Thus even the heavenly authority ratifies
the discipline of the church in regard to its members when the Bible rule has been fol-
lowed." -Ibid., vol. 3, p. 428.

THE WORK
"Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour
mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for
them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them,
'Follow Me.' "-The Ministry of Healing, p. 143.

1. For what purpose did Christ go to the yearly festivals of the Jewish nation?
John 7:14, 15; 12:12, 13.
"He [Christ] attended the great yearly festivals of the nation, and to the multitude
absorbed in outward ceremony He spoke of heavenly things, bringing eternity within
their view. To all He brought treasures from the storehouse of wisdom. He spoke to
them in language so simple that they could not fail of understanding. By methods pecu-
liarly His own, He helped all who were in sorrow and affliction. With tender, courteous
grace, He ministered to the sin-sick soul, bringing healing and strength.
"The Prince of teachers, He sought access to the people by the pathway of their
most familiar associations. He presented the truth in such a way that ever after it was
to His hearers intertwined with their most hallowed recollections and sympathies."-
Evangelism, pp. 54, 55.
2. How did the apostles improve the missionary opportunities offered by the
national festivals? Acts 2:1, 14-16; 18:21; 20:16.
"Every year, at the time of the festivals, many Jews from all lands came to Jeru-
salem to worship at the temple. Some of these pilgrims were men of fervent piety and
earnest students of the prophecies. They were looking and longing for the advent of
the promised Messiah, the hope of Israel. While Jerusalem was filled with these stran-
gers, the apostles preached Christ with unflinching courage, though they knew that in
so doing they were placing their lives in constant jeopardy. The Spirit of God set its

life. Read to them from the Word of God. There is a soul sickness no balm can reach,
no medicine heal. Pray for these, and bring them to Jesus Christ. And in all your
work, Christ will be present to make impressions upon human hearts.

God, by their faith and works testifying to the near approach of the coming Saviour."-

2. When the disciples were inclined to remain in large numbers in Jerusalem,

what did the Lord permit to come upon them, and for what purpose was this

A Stratagem to Hinder the Work o Tuesday

Korah's success in gaining the larger part of the congregation of Israel on his side led
him to feel confident that he was wise and correct in judgment, and that Moses was
indeed usurping authority that threatened the prosperity and salvation of Israel. He
claimed that God had opened the matter to him and laid upon him the burden of chang-
ing the government of Israel just before it was too late. He stated ... that the people
only wanted to have their rights; they wanted individual independence."-Testimonies.

4. What warning should enable us to identify and oppose Satan's missionary

"It is a most serious matter to go from house to house, and under pretense of doing
missionary work, cast in the seed of mistrust and suspicion. Each one speedily germi-
nates, and there is created a distrust of God's servants, who have His message to bear
to the people. When God speaks through His servants, the seed [of mistrust and sus-
picion] sown has developed into a root of bitterness. The word falls upon hearts that
will not hear, on hearts that will not respond. No earthly or heavenly power can find
access to the soul.

"Do not reproach the Christian religion by jealousy and intolerance toward others.
This will but poorly recommend your belief to them. No one has ever been reclaimed

winning deportment, may save the erring and hide a multitude of sins. God requires

thee as an heathen man and a publican.' But he is not to be regarded as cut off from
the mercy of God. Let him not be despised or neglected by his former brethren, but be
treated with tenderness and compassion, as one of the lost sheep that Christ is still

of Lucifer, the 'son of the morning,' in glory surpassing all the angels that surround the
throne, and united in closest ties to the Son of God. Lucifer had said, 'I will be like the
Most High' (Isaiah 14:12, 14); and the desire for self-exaltation had brought strife into
the heavenly courts, and had banished a multitude of the hosts of God. Had Lucifer
really desired to be like the Most High, he would never have deserted his appointed
place in heaven; for the spirit of the Most High is manifested in unselfish ministry.
Lucifer desired God's power, but not His character. He sought for himself the highest
place, and every being who is actuated by his spirit will do the same. Thus alienation,
discord, and strife will be inevitable. Dominion becomes the prize of the strongest. The
kingdom of Satan is a kingdom of force; every individual regards every other as an ob-
stacle in the way of his own advancement, or a steppingstone on which he himself may
climb to a higher place."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 435, 436.
2. What request was made by two of Christ's disciples? Matthew 20:20-22.

How would they share the highest honors of Christ? Matthew 20:23, 24.
"Jesus bears tenderly with them, not rebuking their selfishness in seeking prefer-
ence above their brethren. He reads their hearts, He knows the depth of their attach-
ment to Him. Their love is not a mere human affection; though defiled by the earthli-
ness of its human channel, it is an outflowing from the fountain of His own redeeming
love. He will not rebuke, but deepen and purify. He said, 'Are ye able to drink of the
cup that 1 shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that 1am baptized with?'

They recall His mysterious words, pointing to trial and suffering, yet answer confi-
dently, 'We are able.' They would count it highest honor to prove their loyalty by shar-
ing all that is to befall their Lord.
" 'Ye shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am bap-
tized with,' He said; before Him a cross instead of a throne, two malefactors His com-
panions at His right hand and His left. John and James were to share with their Master
in suffering; the one, first of the brethren to perish with the sword; the other, longest
of all to endure toil, and reproach, and persecution." -The Desire of Ages, pp. 548, 549.

3. How did Christ explain the difference between the kingdoms of the world and
the kingdom of God? Matthew 20:25-28.
"In the kingdoms of the world, position meant self-aggrandizement. The people
were supposed to exist for the benefit of the ruling classes. Influence, wealth, educa-
tion, were so many means of gaining control of the masses for the use of the leaders.
The higher classes were to think, decide, enjoy, and rule; the lower were to obey and
serve. Religion, like all things else, was a matter of authority. The people were ex-
pected to believe and practice as their superiors directed. The right of man as man, to
think and act for himself, was wholly unrecognized.
"Christ was establishing a kingdom on different principles. He called men, not to
authority, but to service, the strong to bear the infirmities of the weak. Power, position,
talent, education, placed their possessor under the greater obligation to serve his fel-
lows." - The Desire of Ages, p. 550.
"When James and John made their request for pre-eminence, He had said, 'Who-
soever will be great among you, let him be your minister.' Matthew 20:26. In My king-
dom the principle of preference and supremacy has no place. The only greatness is
the greatness of humility. The only distinction is found in devotion to the service of
others." -Ibid., p. 650.
4. By what characteristic, especially, should the true people of God be distin-

guished from the rest of the world? Matthew 11:28-30; Mark 10:44.
"Those who profess our exalted faith, who are keeping God's commandments and
expecting the soon coming of our Lord, should be distinct and separate from the world
around them, a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Among the peculiarities which
should distinguish God's people from the world in these last days, is their humility and
meekness. 'Learn of Me,' says Christ; 'for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall
find rest unto your souls.' Here is the repose which so many crave and in vain spend
time and money to obtain. Instead of being ambitious to be equal to another in honor
and position, or perhaps even higher, we should seek to be the humble, faithful serv-
ants of Christ." - Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 225, 226.

5. What is the basic principle of Christian fellowship? Matthew 23:8 (last part).
"Those who, in the spirit and love of Jesus, will become one with Him, will be in
close fellowship one with another, bound up by the silken cords of love. Then the ties
of human brotherhood would not be always on the strain, ready at any provocation to

snap asunder. 'All ye are brethren' will be the sentiment of every child of faith. When
the followers of Christ are one with Him, there will be no first and last, no less respected
or less important ones. A blessed brotherly fellowship one with another will bind all
who truly receive the Lord Jesus Christ in a firm loyalty that cannot be broken. All will
be equally one with Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, pp. 1097,
1098.
6. What shows that John the Baptist was imbued with the true spirit that is to
characterize every Christian? John 3:26-30.
"God calls a man to do a certain work; and when he has carried it as far as he is
qualified to take it, the Lord brings in others, to carry it still farther. But, like John's
disciples, many feel that the success of the work depends on the first laborer. Attention
is fixed upon the human instead of the divine, jealousy comes in, and the work of God
is marred. The one thus unduly honored is tempted to cherish self-confidence. He does
not realize his dependence on God. The people are taught to rely on man for guidance,
and thus they fall into error, and are led away from God.
"The work of God is not to bear the image and superscription of man. From time
to time the Lord will bring in different agencies, through whom His purpose can best
be accomplished. Happy are they who are willing for self to be humbled, saying with
John the Baptist, 'He must increase, but I must decrease.''' -The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 182.

7. What spirit of respect and deference was cultivated among the early Chris-

"Reverence should be shown for God's representatives-for ministers, teachers,

and parents, who are called to speak and act in His stead. In the respect shown them,
God is honored.
"Courtesy, also is one of the graces of the Spirit and should be cultivated by all. It
has power to soften natures which without it would grow hard and rough. Those who
profess to be followers of Christ, and are at the same time rough, unkind, and uncour-
teous, have not learned of Jesus. Their sincerity may not be doubted, their uprightness
may not be questioned; but sincerity and uprightness will not atone for a lack of kind-
ness and courtesy." -Prophets and Kings, p. 237.
8. What rule of conduct was Peter inspired to write down for both young and old?
1 Peter 5:5. What event, which took place in the days of Elisha, still stands

9. In the work of God, how are we to understand and apply the instruction in
Romans 12:10?
"God's servants are to work together, blending in kindly, courteous order, 'in honor
preferring one another.' Romans 12:10. There is to be no unkind criticism, no pulling
to pieces of another's work; and there are to be no separate parties. Every man to whom
the Lord has entrusted a message has his specific work. Each one has an individuality
of his own, which he is not to sink in that of any other man. Yet each is to work in har-
mony with his brethren. In their service God's workers are to be essentially onel No
one is to set himself up as a criterion, speaking disrespectfully of his fellow workers,
or treating them as inferior. Under God each is to do his appointed work, respected,
loved, and encouraged by the other laborers. Together they are to carry the work for-
ward to completion."- The Acts of Ihe Apostles, pp. 275, 276.
10. What principle, abiding in our hearts, will prove to the world that we are
Christ's followers indeed? What does the apostle John say concerning this
principle? 1 John 4:7-11.
"When the heavenly principle of etemallove fills the heart, it will flow out to others,
not merely because favors are received of them, but because love is the principle of
action and modifies the character, governs the impulses, controls the passions, sub-
dues enmity, and elevates and ennobles the affections. This love is not contracted so
as merely to include 'me and mine,' but is as broad as the world and as high as heaven,
and is in harmony with that of the angel workers. This love cherished in the soul sweet-
ens the entire life and sheds a refining influence on all around. Possessing it, we cannot
but be happy, let fortune smile or frown. If we love God with all the heart, we must love
His children also. This love is the Spirit of God. It is the heavenly adorning that gives
true nobility and dignity to the soul and assimilates our lives to that of the Master. No
matter how many good qualities we may have, however honorable and refined we may
consider ourselves, if the soul is not baptized with the heavenly grace of love to God
and one another, we are deficient in true goodness and unfit for heaven, where all is
