FOREWORD
The lessons for this quarter are based on 2 Timothy 3:1-5, where
the apostle Paul gives the moral and spiritual characteristics of the
professed Christian people living in these last days.
The word of God makes it clear that, shortly before the second
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must expect, in the so-called
Christian world, an alarming religious decadence. The apostle writes:
"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without nat-
ural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, de-
spisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but de-
nying the power thereof: from such turn away" (2 Timothy 3: 1-5).
As we study these lessons, we have before us a clear picture of the
apostasy which is leavening the churches. However, the main object
of our study is, not so much to scrutinize the failures of our neighbors,
as to examine our own shortcomings. With the Bible verses and Spirit
of Prophecy notes before us as a mirror, let us, by the grace of God, do
a work of self-assessment. Let us pray that the Lord will enlighten our
minds and show us where we are deficient in His sight.
Although our own church should not be exempt from careful and
critical scrutiny in the light of the topics in the lessons, these should
not be taken as an open invitation to examine and make destructive
criticism of our brethren. Rather, everyone should first examine him-
self to see if any of these things apply, even in part, to his own experi-
ence.
May the Lord give us the guidance of His Holy Spirit as we go
through this important series of studies!

Thirteenth Sabbath Offering for France

The Thirteenth Sabbath Offering of the fourth quarter, 1982, is desig-

nated for, our country, France.
France is one of the southern European countries bounded by the Atlantic
Ocean on the west, Spain and the Mediterranean Sea on the south, Belgium
and Germany on the north with Switzerland and Italy on the east.
France is a country with a very rich history of which the many castles and
ruins still bear witness of past glory. The numerous churches and cathedrals
testify to the momentous history of the dark, middle ages mentioned in The
Great Controversy.
In reality, here was the place of inquisitions, the most violent persecution
and the burnings at the stake on account of faithfulness and the resistance of
the faithful hearts who have kept "the faith once delivered to the saints." It
is the country of the Vaudois and the Huguenots with all their history, some
of which is also mentioned in The Great Controversy.
In our day, France is a soil not very receptive to the sowing of truth. For
a long time there were not many Reformers. They could be counted on the
fingers. During the fifteen years that the church has been organized here, the
Lord has visited this country anew with His eye of mercy arid almost every
year some new souls come to swell the ranks of the people of God.
Thanks to the help of a brother, the Field has possessed, since September,
1978, a center which serves as a place of meeting and for conference several
times a year. This house, situated among low mountains in the heart of nature,
. is encircled by a fine forest of fir trees. It provides for treatments and as a veg-
etarian boarding home open to the public. We are seeing already, year by year,
new souls preparing themselves for baptism.
The interest in healthful diet is considerable and by this means the church
has an open door to give the bread of life. Already the building is too small,
and numerous alterations and improvements are necessary. That requires
sizable means.
Who is willing to open his heart and to come to the help of your brethren
in France in order to find the many sheep who are still lost, and lead them to
the feet of Jesus?
"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,
ye have done it unto me," said Jesus. "Give joyfully and the Lord will give
back one hundredfold in His time according to His promise."

May God bless your generosity abundantly.

SELFISH AND COVETOUS

Selfishness and covetousness go hand in hand. Selfishness is that supreme self-

love or self-preference which leads a person to direct his purposes to the advance-
ment of his own interest, power, or happiness, without regarding those of others.
Covetousness is not only a strong desire for possessions, but an inordinate desire,
often for that which belongs to another.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous" (2 Timothy
3:2).

Selfishness, a Common Sin o Sunday

September 26

1. How prevalent is the sin of selfishness? Isaiah 56: 11; Philippians 2:21; 2
Timothy 3:2. With what other sins is selfishness generally associated, and
what does it do to the individual?

"If evil angels control the heart, it will be seen in various ways. The fruit will be
selfishness, covetousness, pride, and evil passions."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 188.
"Nothing saps spirituality from the soul more quickly than to enclose it in
selfishness and self-caring. Those who indulge self and neglect to care for the souls
and bodies of those for whom Christ has given His life, are not eating of the bread of
life, nor drinking of the water of the well of salvation. They are dry and sapless, like a
tree that bears no fruit. They are spiritual dwarfs, who consume their means on self;
but 'whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.' "-Evangelism, p. 357.

2. Give three Bible examples of selfishness. Genesis 4:9; 1 Samuel 25:3, 10, 11;
Esther 6:6.

Characteristics of Selfishness o Monday

September 27

3. How does selfishness show itself in the conduct of individuals? Micah 3:11; 1
John 3:17. Describe a selfish person.

"Selfishness will require of others that which we are unwilling to give them."-
Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 81.
"Selfishness is the essence of depravity, and because human beings have yielded
to its power, the opposite of allegiance to God is seen in the world today. Nations,
families, and individuals are filled with a desire to make self a center. Man longs to
rule over his fellow men. Separating himself in his egotism from God and his fellow
beings, he follows his unrestrained inclinations. He acts as if the good of others
depended on their subjection to his supremacy." -Counsels on Stewardship, p. 24.

-5-
4. How can you show that selfishness is inconsistent with Christian love and
with the communion of the saints? 1 Corinthians 13:4, 5; 12:25, 26.

Victory Over Selfishness o Tuesday

September 28
5. How did Christ condemn selfishness by His example? 2 Corinthians 8:9;
Romans 15:3. What example has the apostle Paul given us in this respect? 1
Corinthians 10:33; 9:19-23.

6. How can we as followers of Christ overcome selfishness? 2 Corinthians 5: 14,

15; Philippians 2:4.

"When our churches will fulfill the duty resting upon them, they will be living,
working agencies for the Master. The manifestation of Christian love will fill the soul
with a deeper, more earnest fervor to work for Him who gave His life to save the
world. By being good and doing good Christ's followers expel selfishness from the
soul. To them the most costly sacrifice seems too cheap to give. They see a large
vineyard to be worked, and they realize that they must be prepared by divine grace to
labor patiently, earnestly, in season and out of season, in a sphere which knows no
boundaries. They obtain victory after victory, increasing in experience and efficiency,
extending on all sides their earnest efforts to win souls for Christ. They use to the
best advantage their increasing experience; their hearts are melted by the love of
Christ." -Medical Ministry, p. 317.
The Root ofA II Sins o Wednesday
September 29
7. What is the tenth commandment? Exodus 20: 17. What knowledge do those
lack who are filled with covetousness and other sins? Romans 1:28, 29.
What spirit controls them?

"Covetousness, the desire of benefit for self's sake, cuts the soul off from life. It is
the spirit of Satan to get, to draw to self." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 259.

8. Give some Bible examples of covetousness. Isaiah 14:12-14; Numbers

22:16-18,21,22; Joshua 7:11, 20, 21; John 12:4-6. What are some of the
consequences of this sin? How do even church members become involved in
this evil?

"Covetousness is an evil of gradual development. Achan had cherished greed of

gain until it became a habit, binding him in fetters well-nigh impossible to break. While
fostering this evil, he would have been filled with horror at the thought of bringing
disaster upon Israel; but his perceptions were deadened by sin, and when temptation
came, he fell an easy prey.
"Are not similar sins still committed, in the face of warnings as solemn and ex-
plicit? Weare as directly forbidden to indulge covetousness as was Achan to appropri-
ate the spoils of Jericho. God has declared it to be idolatry. We are warned, 'Ye can-
not serve God and mammon.' Matthew 6:24. 'Take heed, and beware of covetousness.'
Luke 12:15. 'Let it not be once named among you.' Ephesians 5:3. We have before us
the fearful doom of Achan, of Judas, of Ananias and Sapphira. Back of all these we
have that of Lucifer, the 'son of the morning,' who, coveting a higher state, forfeited
forever the brightness and bliss of heaven. And yet, notwithstanding all these warn-
ings, covetousness abounds.

-6-
"Everywhere its slimy track is seen. It creates discontent and dissension in
families; it excites envy and hatred in the poor against the rich; it prompts the grind-
ing oppression of the rich toward the poor. And this evil exists not in the world alone,
but in the church. How common even here to find selfishness, avarice, overreaching,
neglect of charities, and robbery of God 'in tithes and offerings.' Among church
members 'in good and regular standing' there are, alas! many Achans." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 496, 497.

A Conflict Between Two Principles o Thursday

September 30

9. How are men punished for being covetous and how are they rewarded for
overcoming covetousness? Malachi 3:9-11; Haggai 1:6, 9, 10.

"I saw that some have excused themselves from aiding the cause of God because
they were in debt. Had they closely examined their own hearts, they would have dis-
covered that selfishness was the true reason why they brought no freewill offering to
God. Some will always remain in debt. Because of their covetousness, the prospering
hand of God will not be with them to bless their undertakings. They love this world
better than they love the truth. They are not being fitted up and made ready for the
kingdom of God."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 225.

10. How do the principles of heaven contrast with the principles of the world?
Luke 12:15-21. What is God's remedy for covetousness? Isaiah 58:7; Mat-
thew 6:19-21; 1 Timothy 6:6-11.

"The principle of worldlings is to get all they can of the perishable things of this
life. Selfish love of gain is the ruling principle in their lives. But the purest joy is not
found in riches nor where covetousness is always craving, but where contentment
reigns and where self-sacrificing love is the ruling principle. There are thousands who
are passing their lives in indulgence and whose hearts are filled with repining. They
are victims of selfishness and discontent in the vain effort to satisfy their minds with
indulgence. But unhappiness is stamped upon their very countenances, and behind
them is a desert, because their course is not fruitful in good works."- Testimonies, vol. 3,
p.382.
"Love of money and love of display have made this world as a den of thieves and
robbers. The Scriptures picture the greed and oppression that will prevail just before
Christ's second coming." -Prophets and Kings, p. 651.

PROUD, HIGH-MINDED AND BOASTFUL

Pride-a high opinion of what one is, has, or has done; a feeling of personal dig-
nity because of real worth or excessive self-love; and arrogance because of im-
agined superiority-is one of the characteristics of the present generation.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... boasters, proud, highminded" (2 Timothy 3:2,
4).
Origin ofPride D Sunday
October 3
1. What caused Lucifer's banishment from heaven? Ezekiel 28:13-17.

"It was the pride and ambition cherished in the heart of Satan that banished him
from heaven. These evils are deeply rooted in our fallen nature, and if not removed
they will overshadow every good and noble quality and bring forth envy and strife as
their baleful fruits." - Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 242.
2. How did Satan try to instill pride into the hearts of our first parents? Genesis
3:4, 5. How is he trying to destroy men and women today?

"Satan tempts men to disobedience by leading them to believe they are entering a
wonderful field of knowledge. But this is all a deception. Elated with their ideas of
progression, they are, by trampling on God's requirements, setting their feet in the
path that leads to degradation and death.
"Satan represented to the holy pair that they would be gainers by breaking the
law of God. Do we not today hear similar reasoning? Many talk of the narrowness of
those who obey God's commandments, while they themselves claim to have broader
ideas, and to enjoy greater liberty. What is this but an echo of the voice from Eden,
'In the day ye eat thereof'-transgress the divine requirement-'ye shall be as gods'?
Satan claimed to have received great good by eating of the forbidden fruit, but he did
not let it appear that by transgression he had become an outcast from heaven.
Though he had found sin to result in infinite loss, he concealed his own misery in
order to draw others into the same position." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 55.
Characteristics ofPride D Monday
October 4
3. What are some of the evidences of pride? Describe a proud person. Psalm
10:4; Proverbs 21:24 (first part); Isaiah 3:16.

"It is a wicked pride that delights in the vanity of one's own works, that boasts of
one's excellent qualities, seeking to make others seem inferior in order to exalt self,
claiming more glory than the cold heart is willing to give to God."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p.
223.

-8-
4. What other sins go hand in hand with pride? 1 Timothy 6:4 (first part).

"Pride, ignorance, and folly are constant companions. The Lord is displeased with
the pride manifested among His professed people. He is dishonored by their conform-
ity to the unhealthful, immodest, and expensive fashions of this degenerate age."- Tes-
timonies. vol. 4, p. 634.

Most Hopeless and Incurable Sin o Tuesday

October 5
5. Which of the ten commandments condemns pride? Exodus 20:3. Why? Pro-
verbs 21:4.

"Pride lifts itself up unto vanity, leading the human agent to make a god of him-
self."-Testimonies. vol. 9, p. 212.

6. How are the proud often regarded? Malachi 3: 15 (first part). How does the
Lord regard them? Proverbs 6:16, 17: 16:5; James 4:6.

"The evil that led to Peter's fall and that shut out the Pharisee from communion
with God is proving the ruin of thousands today. There is nothing so offensive to God
or so dangerous to the human soul as pride and self-sufficiency. Of all sins it is the
most hopeless, the most incurable." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 154.

Consequences ofPride D Wednesday

October 6
7. What is one great sin of these last days? 2 Timothy 3:2; Isaiah 3:5 (second
part). What will pride do to him that cherishes it? Proverbs 29:23; 16:18.

"Pride of heart is a fearful trait of character. 'Pride goeth before destruction.'

This is true in the family, the church, and the nation." - Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 377.

8. What will be the inescapable fate of the proud? Malachi 4: 1.

"I saw that God hates pride, and that all the proud and all that do wickedly shall
be stubble, and the day that cometh shall burn them up. I saw that the third angel's
message must yet work like leaven upon many hearts that profess to believe it, and
purge away their pride, selfishness, covetousness, and love of the world."-Testimmlies,
vol. 1, pp. 132, 133.

Victory Over Pride o Thursday

October 7
9. What does the Bible say of those who conquer pride, doing the will of God? 1
John 2: 16, 17: Matthew 5:3. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say on this
point?

"I saw that none could share the 'refreshing' unless they obtain the victory over
every besetment, over pride, selfishness, love of the world, and over every wrong
word and action. We should, therefore, be drawing nearer and nearer to the Lord and
be earnestly seeking that preparation necessary to enable us to stand in the battle in
the day of the Lord. Let all remember that God is holy and that none but holy beings
can ever dwell in His presence." -Early Writings, p. 71.

-9-
"His [Christ's] subjects are the poor in spirit, the meek, the persecuted for righ-
teousness' sake. The kingdom of heaven is theirs. Though not yet fully accomplished,
the work is begun in them which will make them 'meet to be partakers of the inheri-
tance of the saints in light.' Colossians 1: 12."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 8.

10. How can we be victorious over pride? Matthew 11:2S-30; 26:41. What ad-
vice did Sister White send to a proud man?

"One of your greatest dangers is a spirit of self-confidence and pride. The great
unhappiness which exists with you and in your family results immediately from the
operation of pride. The usefulness of a man who has this pride must be greatly limited,
for his pride and self-love keep him in a narrow sphere. His spirit is not generous. His
efforts are not extended, but contracted. By his conversation and deportment this
pride will be discovered if it exists.
"Dear brother, the influence under which your character has been formed has
given you a haughty, overbearing spirit. This spirit you act out in your family and
among your neighbors and all with whom you associate. In order to overcome these
wrong habits, you must watch unto prayer. You should now be thoroughly in earnest,
for you have little time in which to work. Do not feel that you are sufficient in your
own strength. Only in the name of the mighty Conqueror can you gain the victory."-
Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 259.

BLASPHEMERS

One of the characteristics of the twentieth century is that the churches, while
maintaining "a form of godliness," are full of "blasphemers." Blasphemy is con-
temptuous talk about God and sacred things; or any intentional utterance defying
or offering indignity to God.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... blasphemers" (2 Timothy 3:2).

Contempt for God's Authority o Sunday

October 10

1. Which of the ten commandments condemns blasphemy? Exodus 20:7. What

punishment was meted out to blasphemers in the Old Testament times?
Leviticus 24:10-16.

"There are those who will question God's love and His justice in visiting so severe
punishment for words spoken in the heat of passion. But both love and justice require
it to be shown that utterances prompted by malice against God are a great sin. The
retribution visited upon the first offender would be a warning to others, that God's
name is to be held in reverence. But had this man's sin been permitted to pass un-
punished, others would have been demoralized; and as the result many lives must
eventually have been sacrificed." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 408. [See Leviticus 24:10-16.]

2. What other expression of contempt for God's authority was also punishable
with death? Numbers 15:32-36.

"The sins of blasphemy and willful Sabbathbreaking received the same punish-
ment, being equally an expression of contempt for the authority of God.
"In our day there are many who reject the creation Sabbath as a Jewish institution
and urge that if it is to be kept, the penalty of death must be inflicted for its violation;
but we see that blasphemy received the same punishment as did Sabbathbreaking.
Shall we therefore conclude that the third commandment also is to be set aside as ap-
plicable only to the Jews?" -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 409.

Guilty ofBlasphemy in Three Ways o Monday

October 11

3. What was one of the sins of ancient Israel? Isaiah 65:7; Ezekiel 20:27. How
did the Jews cause the Gentiles to blaspheme the name of God even in the
days of the apostles? Romans 2:23,24. How did Paul warn the Christian be-
lievers to avoid a similar mistake? 1 Timothy 6:1; Titus 2:4,5.

-11-
4. With what sin did Jesus charge the Jewish leaders? Mark 3:28, 29. How do
men become guilty of this sin?

"To speak against Christ, charging His work to satanic agencies, and attributing
the manifestations of the Spirit to fanaticism, is not of itself a damning sin, but the
spirit that leads men to make these assertions places them in a position of stubborn
resistance, where they cannot see spiritual light. ...
"They think they are following sound reason, but they are following another
leader. They have placed themselves under the control of a power which in their
blindness they are wholly ignorant of. They have resisted the only Spirit that could
lead them, enlighten them, save them. They are following in the path of guilt for
which there can be no forgiveness, in this life or in the life to come. Not that any
degree of guilt would exhaust the mercy of God, but because pride and persistent
stubbornness leads them to do despite to the Spirit of God, to occupy a place where no
manifestation of the Spirit can convince them of their error. They will not yield their
stubborn wills.
"In this our day men have placed themselves where they are wholly unable to
fulfill the conditions of repentance and confession: therefore they cannot find mercy
and pardon. The sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit does not lie in any sudden
word or deed; it is the firm, determined resistance of truth and evidence." - The SDA Bi-
ble Commentary [E.G. White Comments]. vol. 5 pp. 1092, 1093.

The Deceitful and Foolish Heart: the Seat ofBlasphemy o Tuesday

October 12

5. Where does blasphemy originate before it is manifested? Jeremiah 17:9;

Mark 7:20-23.

6. What does the psalmist say with reference to the spiritual and mental condi-
tion of those that blaspheme against God? Psalm 74: 18 (second part). Give
an example showing how people can commit blasphemy through ignorance.

"When standing by the graves of their children, the afflicted parents look upon
their bereavement as a special dispensation of Providence, when, by inexcusable ig-
norance, their own course has destroyed the lives of their children. To then charge
their death to Providence is blasphemy."- Testimonies. vol. 3. pp. 135. 136.

Blasphemy on a Denominational Level o Wednesday

October 13

7. Show how the Bible equates false prophecy or false claims with the sin of
blasphemy. Ezekiel 35:12; Revelation 2:9.

8. Of what sin does the Bible accuse the religio-political system referred to in
Revelation 13? Revelation 13:1, 5, 6. How does this power blaspheme
against God? Give two examples of this blasphemy. 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4, 9.

"What would be gained to God should we admit that He delights in witnessing

unceasing tortures; that He is regaled with the groans and shrieks and imprecations of
the suffering creatures whom He holds in the flames of hell? Can these horrid sounds
be music in the ear of Infinite Love? It is urged that the infliction of endless misery
upon the wicked would show God's hatred of sin as an evil which is ruinous to the
peace and order of the universe. Oh, dreadful blasphemy!"- The Great Controversy. p. 536.

-12 -
Blasphemy in the Last Days D Thursday
October 14

9. What sin, practiced by professed Christians in these last days, puts them on
a level with the Jews in the days of old? Isaiah 52:5; 2 Timothy 3:2; James
2:7. How have blasphemers been constrained to stop blaspheming at least
for a while?

"Since the Flood, fire as well as water has been God's agent to destroy very wicked
cities. These judgments are sent that those who lightly regard God's law and trample
upon His authority may be led to tremble before His power and to confess His just
sovereignty. As men have beheld burning mountains pouring forth fire and flames
and torrents of melted ore, drying up rivers, overwhelming populous cities, and every-
where spreading ruin and desolation, the stoutest heart has been filled with terror and
infidels and blasphemers have been constrained to acknowledge the infinite power of
God." -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 109.

10. How will those who bear the mark of the beast increase their guilt under the
seven last plagues? Revelation 16:9, 11, 21. How and when will their blas-
phemies turn into desperate prayers? Revelation 6:15, 16.

"The derisive jests have ceased. Lying lips are hushed into silence. The clash of
arms, the tumult of battle, 'with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood' (Isaiah
9:5), is stilled. Nought now is heard but the voice of prayer and the sound of weeping
and lamentation. The cry bursts forth from lips so lately scoffing, 'The great day of His
wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?' The wicked pray to be buried beneath
the rocks of the mountains rather than meet the face of Him whom they have despised
and rejected." - The Great Controversy. p. 642.

Recapitulation D Friday
October 15

a. Why would it be wrong to question the love and justice of God in punishing
the sin of blasphemy according to the example in Leviticus 24:10-16?
b. How can a professed Christian cause outsiders to blaspheme the truth or the
name of God?
c. What other sins often coexist with blasphemy in a deceitful and wicked heart?
d. What heathen doctrine, introduced into the professed Christian churches, is
a dreadful blasphemy against the character of God?
e. What do blasphemers often do when filled with terror? •

Lesson 4 Sabbath, October 23,1982

DISOBEDIENT TO PARENTS

"One of the signs that we are living in the last days is that children are disobedient
to parents, unthankful, unholy" (Messages to Young People, p. 444). And to a
great extent the parents are responsible for this situation. "If in their own homes
children are allowed to be disrespectful, disobedient, unthankful, and peevish,
their sins lie at the door of their parents" (Child Guidance, p. 98).

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... disobedient to parents" (2 Timothy 3:2).

Fifth Commandment D Sunday

October 17

1. What is the fifth commandment and what does it imply? Exodus 20: 12 (first
part).

"The fifth commandment requires children not only to yield respect, submission,
and obedience to their parents, but also to give them love and tenderness, to lighten
their cares, to guard their reputation, and to succor and comfort them in old age. It
also enjoins respect for ministers and rulers and for all others to whom God has dele-
gated authority." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 308.
"He who rejects the rightful authority of his parents is rejecting the authority of
God,"-Ibid.

2. Toward whom, besides the parents, does the word of God enjoin respect?
Leviticus 19:32; Proverbs 16:31; Exodus 22:28.

"Reverence should be shown for God's representatives-for ministers, teachers,

and parents who are called to speak and act in His stead. In the respect shown to
them He is honored." -Education, p. 244.

Fifth Commandment (continued) D Monday

October 18

3. How did Satan succeed in inducing the Pharisees to set aside the fifth com-
mandment in the days of Christ? Mark 7:9-13.

4. In our days, what is one of the signs of the end in connection with the fifth
commandment? 2 Timothy 3:2 (second part); Isaiah 3:5.

"Anciently, parental authority was regarded; children were then in subjection to

their parents, and feared and reverenced them; butin these last days the order is
reversed. Some parents are in subjection to their children. They fear to cross the will
of their children, and therefore yield to them."-Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 216, 217.

"In these last days children are so noted for their disobedience and disrespect
that God has especially noticed it, and it constitutes a sign that the end is near. It
shows that Satan has almost complete control of the minds of the young. By many,
age is no more respected. It is considered too old-fashioned to respect the aged; it
dates back as far as the days of Abraham." -Ibid., pp. 217, 218.
Parental Responsibility o Tuesday
October 19
5. What is one of the first lessons that a child should learn? Proverbs 22:6.
What is the lesson of obedience calculated to prevent?

"One of the first lessons a child needs to learn is the lesson of obedience. Before
he is old enough to reason, he may be taught to obey. By gentle, persistent effort, the
habit should be established. Thus, to a great degree, may be prevented those later
conflicts between will and authority that do so much to create alienation and bitterness
toward parents and teachers, and too often resistance of all authority, human and
divine."-Education, p. 287.

6. What consequences must be expected when parents neglect their duty to

their children? Proverbs 29:15; Micah 7:6.

"Some children, as they grow older, think it a matter of course that they must
have their own way, and that their parents must submit to their wishes. They expect
their parents to wait upon them. They are impatient of restraint, and when old
enough to be a help to their parents, they do not bear the burdens they should. They
have been released from responsibilities, and grow up worthless at home and worth-
less abroad. They have no power of endurance. The parents have borne the burden,
and have suffered them to grow up in idleness, without habits of order, industry, or
economy. They have not been taught habits of self-denial, but have been petted and
indulged, their appetites gratified, and they come up with enfeebled health. Their
manners and deportment are not agreeable. They are unhappy themselves, and make
those around them unhappy."-Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 218, 219.
A Timely Warning o Wednesday
October 20
7. How are parents admonished against too much severity in the training of
their children? Ephesians 6:4. What is worth much more than sermons?

"Parents, God desires you to make your family a sample of the family in heaven.
Guard your children. Be kind and tender with them. Father, mother, and children are
to be joined together with the golden links of love. One well-ordered, well-disciplined
family is a greater power in demonstrating the efficiency of Christianity than all the
sermons in the world. When fathers and mothers realize how their children copy
them, they will watch carefully every word and gesture."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White CommentsJ, vol. 6, p. 1118.

8. What happens very often when parents go too far in the application of the
counsel given in Proverbs 23: 13?

"Too much management is as bad as too little. The effort to 'break the will' of a
child is a terrible mistake. Minds are constituted differently; while force may secure
outward submission, the result with many children is a more determined rebellion of
the heart. Even should the parent or teacher succeed in gaining the control he seeks,

-15 -
the outcome may be no less harmful to the child. The discipline of a human being who
has reached the years of intelligence should differ from the training of a dumb animal.
The beast is taught only submission to its master. For the beast, the master is mind,
judgment, and will. This method, sometimes employed in the training of children,
makes them little more than automatons. Mind, will, conscience, are under the control
of another. It is not God's purpose that any mind should be thus dominated. Those
who weaken or destroy individuality assume a responsibility that can result only in
evil. While under authority, the children may appear like well-drilled soldiers; but
when the control ceases, the character will be found to lack strength and steadfast-
ness. Having never learned to govern himself, the youth recognizes no restraint except
the requirement of parents or teacher. This removed, he knows not how to use his
liberty, and often gives himself up to indulgence that proves his ruin." -Education. p. 288.
Religion in the Home 0 Thursday
October 21
9. What promise was connected with the fifth commandment in the days of an·
cient Israel? Exodus 20: 12 (second part). What application does this promise
have in our days? Ephesians 6:2.

"Our youth profess to be among those who keep the commandments of God, and
yet many of them neglect and break the fifth commandment; and the rich blessing
promised to those who observe this precept, and honor father and mother, cannot be
fulfilled to them. Unless they repent of their sin, and reform their practices and
character through the grace of Christ, they will never enter into the new earth, upon
which they may live eternally. Those who do not respect and love their parents will
not respect and honor God. Those who fail to bear the test, who fail to honor their God-
fearing parents, fail to obey God, and therefore cannot expect to come into the land of
promise." -Messages to Young People, pp. 331, 332.
10. In a time when parents and children have become strangers to one another,
what work have we been called to do with a view to closing the generation
gap? Malachi 4:4-6.

"The great reformatory movement must begin in presenting to fathers and

mothers and children the principles of the law of God.... Show that obedience to
God's word is our only safeguard against the evils that are sweeping the world to de-
struction." - Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 119.
"Religion in the home is our great hope and makes the prospect bright for the
conversion of the whole family to the truth of God." -Ibid.

Lesson 5 Sabbath, October 30,1982

UNGRATEFUL AND UNHOLY

Ungratefulness and unholiness are two prominent traits of character of the pres-
ent generation. The blessings of God which are bestowed upon the people every
day are taken as belonging to them by right. They have no disposition to thank
the Giver of all good gifts. And they are unholy, which means that they are igno-
rant of, or indifferent to, the commandments of God. They are ungodly and wicked.
And, sad to say, professed Christians love to have fellowship with the unfruitful
works of darkness.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... unthankful, unholy" (2 Timothy 3:2).

Always Thankful o Sunday

October 24

1. What is one of the aspects of true religion? Psalm 100:4; Colossians 3:15;
4:2. According to the Spirit of Prophecy, how will true Christians act?

"Religion is founded upon love to God, which also leads us to love one another. It
is full of gratitude, humility, long-suffering."- Testimonies. vol. 4. p. 223.
"We should be self-forgetful, ever looking out for opportunities, even in little
things, to show gratitude for the favors we have received of others, and watching for
opportunities to cheer others and lighten and relieve their sorrows and burdens by
acts of tender kindness and little deeds of love." -Ibid.. vol. 3. pp. 539. 540.

2. For what purpose did Christ call the woman that had just been healed by
faith? Mark 5:25-34. What lesson does that experience contain for us?
Isaiah 43: 12.

"After healing the woman [who had suffered much from a disease which was diag-
nosed as incurable by the physicians of her time], Jesus desired her to acknowledge
the blessing she had received. The gifts which the gospel offers are not to be secured
by stealth or enjoyed in secret. So the Lord calls upon us for confession of His good-
ness. 'Ye are My witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.' Isa. 43:12.
"Our confession of His faithfulness is Heaven's chosen agency for revealing
Christ to the world. Weare to acknowledge His grace as made known through the holy
men of old; but that which will be most effectual is the testimony of our own experi-
ence. Weare witnesses for God as we reveal in ourselves the working of a power that
is divine. Every individual has a life distinct from all others, and an experience differ-
ing essentially from theirs. God desires that our praise shall ascend to Him, marked by
our own individuality. These precious acknowledgmt:;nts to the praise of the glory of
His grace, when supported by a Christ-like life, have an irresistible power that works
for the salvation of souls." -The Desire of Ages. p. 347.

Unmindful of God's Mercies D Monday
October 25

3. What lesson was recorded for our instruction in connection with the healing
of the ten lepers? Luke 17:15-18.

"The lesson which is recorded concerning the ten lepers should awaken in every
heart a most earnest desire to change the existing order of ingratitude into one of
praise and thanksgiving. Let the professed people of God stop murmuring and com-
plaining. Let us remember who is the first great Giver of all our blessings. Weare fed
and clothed and sustained in life, and should we not educate ourselves and our
children to respond with gratitude to our heavenly Father?" -My Life Today, p. 170.

4. What is one of the signs of the last days reminiscent of the attitude of the
nine lepers? 2 Timothy 3:2 (last part); Romans 1:21 (first part).

"The Lord works continually to benefit mankind. He is ever imparting His boun-
ties. He raises up the sick from beds of languishing, He delivers men from peril which
they do not see, He commissions heavenly angels to save them from calamity, to guard
them from 'the pestilence that walketh in darkness' and 'the destruction that wasteth
at noonday' (Ps. 91:6); but their hearts are unimpressed. He has given all the riches of
heaven to redeem them, and yet they are unmindful of His great love. By their ingrati-
tude they close their hearts against the grace of God." - The Desire of Ages, p. 348.

Distinction and Separation D Tuesday

October 26

5. What distinction should we always keep before our eyes? Leviticus 10:10.
How does the Spirit of Prophecy emphasize the importance of this distinc-
tion?

"Some of those who know the truth, but do not practice it, are trampling upon the
law of God in their business transactions. We should have no intimate association
with them, lest we catch their spirit, and share their doom. The patriarch Jacob, when
speaking of certain deeds of his sons, which he contemplated with horror, exclaimed,
'0 my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honor, be not
thou united.' He felt that his own honor would be compromised if he associated with
sinners in their doings. He lifts the danger signal to warn us away from such associ-
ations, lest we become partakers of their evil deeds. The Holy Spirit, through the
apostle Paul, utters a similar warning, 'Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works.
of darkness, but rather reprove them.' "- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 87.

6. What separation does God require? Psalm 1:1; 1 Corinthians 5:11; 2 Corin-
thians 6:16, 17.

"I saw that decided efforts should be made to show those who are unchristian in
life their wrongs, and if they do not reform, they should be separated from the
precious and holy, that God may have a clean and pure people that He can delight in.
Dishonor Him not by linking or uniting the clean with the unclean."-Testimonies, vol. 1,
pp. 117, 118.

-18 -
Fearful Assimilation o Wednesday
October 27

7. How did ancient Israel lose sight of the difference between the holy and the
unholy? Ezekiel 22:26.

"I have been shown that the Jewish nation were not brought suddenly into their
condition of thought and practice. From generation to generation they were working
on false theories, carrying out principles opposed to the truth, and combining with
their religion thoughts and plans that were the product of human minds. Human in-
ventions were made supreme." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 359.

8. What distinction has been overlooked by modern Israel as well? Ezekiel 9:4.

"Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the
Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those 'that sigh and that
cry for all the abominations that be done' in the church."- Testimonies, vol. 3. p. 267.

This Last Generation o Thursday

October 28

9. What is one of the predominant features of this last generation? 2 Timothy

3:2 (last part); Jude 17,18; Daniel 12:10.

10. What examples stand out as a warning to this ungodly generation? Jude 4-7;
2 Peter 2:5,6,9. What will be the fate of the ungodly? Romans 1:18; Psalms
1:4-6; 37:10, 20.

"The end of all things is at hand. The day of distress, of anguish, of plague, of
retribution, of judgment for sin, is coming on the world as a thief in the night. The
time is near when sudden destruction will come upon the world, and they will not
escape." -Fundamentals 0/ Christian Education, p. 354.

Lesson 6 Sabbath, November 6, 1982

LOVELESS, IMPLACABLE, AND FIERCE

"The spirit of anarchy is permeating all nations, and the outbreaks that from
time to time excite the horror of the world are but indications of the pent-up fires
of passion and lawlessness that, having once escaped control, will fill the earth
with woe and desolation" (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 102).

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... without natural affection, trucebreakers ...
fierce" (2 Timothy 3:2, 3).
The Basic Principle of Christ's Kingdom D Sunday
October 31
1. What is the fundamental principle of the kingdom of Christ? Matthew 22:36-
40; Romans 13:10.

"Men see that there is among God's professed people that faith which works by
love and purifies the soul from selfishness. In the lives of those who obey God's com-
mandments, worldlings see convincing evidence that the law of God is. a law of love to
God and man."- Testimonies, voL 7, p. 146.
"When men are bound together, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they
show the working of an influence that is above every human influence. Where this
oneness exists, it is evidence that the image of God is being restored in humanity, that
a new principle of life has been implanted. It shows that there is power in the divine
nature to withstand the supernatural agencies of evil, and that the grace of God sub-
dues the selfishness inherent in the natural heart."- The Desire of Ages. p. 678.
2.' How will the true subjects of Christ's kingdom act? Matthew 7:12; 1 John
4:7; Colossians 3:8-10.

"The golden rule is the principle of true courtesy, and its truest illustration is seen
in the life and character of Jesus. Oh, what rays of softness and beauty shone forth in
the daily life of our Saviour! What sweetness flowed from His very presence! The
same spirit will be revealed in His children. Those with whom Christ dwells will be
surrounded with a divine atmosphere. Their white robes of purity will be fragrant
with perfume from the garden of the Lord. Their faces will reflect light from His,
brightening the path for stumbling and weary feet.
"No man who has the true ideal of what constitutes a perfect character will fail to
manifest the sympathy and tenderness of Christ. The influence of grace is to soften
the heart, to refine and purify the feelings, giving a heaven-born delicacy and sense of
propriety."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 135.
Subjects of Satan (without natural affection) D Monday
November 1
3. In contrast to a genuine Christian character, what are the traits of character
of those who are under the control of Satan? Romans 1:29-31.

- 20-
4. What was the reason for which the Canaanites were destroyed? Leviticus
18:24-30. What had led to their moral degradation?

"The Lord presented before Israel the results of holding communion with evil
spirits, in the abominations of the Canaanites: they were without natural affection,
idolaters, adulterers, murderers, and abominable by every corrupt thought and revolt-
ing practice." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 688.

Workers ofIniquity (peaceless) D Tuesday

November 2

5. Why is it that the wicked cannot receive the blessing (Matthew 5:9) promised
to the peacemakers? Isaiah 48: 18, 22.

"Discord and strife are the work of Satan and the fruit of sin. "-Testimonies, vol. 5, p.
169.

6. What is the unavoidable experience of those who have turned away from
God? Proverbs 15:18; Isaiah 59:2-8.

"He [Satan] is intruding his presence in every department of the household, in

every street of our cities, in the churches, in the national councils, in the courts of
justice, perplexing, deceiving, seducing, everywhere ruining the souls and bodies of
men, women, and children, breaking up families, sowing hatred, emulation, strife,
sedition, murder. And the Christian world seem to regard these things as though God
had appointed them and they must exist."- The Great Controversy, p. 508.

A Fierce Nation (example offierceness) D Wednesday

November 3

7. Describe the nation that the Lord would bring against Israel to punish them
for their apostasies. Deuteronomy 28:49-51.

8. How did the Babylonians chastise God's people, as He had warned them
before? Jeremiah 39:6-9.

"Zedekiah was taken prisoner, and his sons were slain before his eyes. The king
was led away from Jerusalem a captive, his eyes were put out, and after arriving in
Babylon he perished miserably. The beautiful temple that for more than four centuries
had crowned the summit of Mount Zion was not spared by the Chaldeans."-Prophets
and Kings, p. 459.

A Fierce Generation D Thursday

November 4

9. Describing this last generation, what trait of character does Paul mention,
reminding us of the Babylonian conquerors? 2 Timothy 3:3 (second part).
What does the Spirit of Prophecy say about the present state of the world?

"I was shown the state of the world, that it is fast filling up its cup of iniquity.
Violence and crime of every description are filling our world, and Satan is using every
means to make crime and debasing vice popular. The youth who walk the streets are
surrounded with handbills and notices of crime and sin, presented in some novel or to

- 21-
be acted at some theater. Their minds are educated into familiarity with sin. The
course pursued by the base and vile is kept before them in the periodicals of the day,
and everything which can excite curiosity and arouse the animal passions is brought
before them in thrilling and exciting storieS."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 471, 472.

10. Under whose control are those who are fierce (i.e., wild, violent and cruel)?
Matthew 8:28.

"The condition of things in the world shows that troublous times are right upon
us. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the near future. Bold
robberies are of frequent occurrence. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are
committed on every hand. Men possessed of demons are taking the lives of men, wo-
men, and little children. Men have become infatuated with vice, and every species of
evil prevails." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 11.

SLANDERERS

Slander-the use of false or exaggerated statements calculated to damage the

reputation of others-is one of the characteristics of the twentieth century. It has
been said with propriety that slanderers are like flies. They pass all over a per-
son's many good parts and light only on his few sores. Slander goes hand in hand
with criticism, faultfinding and talebearing.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... false accusers" (2 Timothy 3:2, 3).

The Ninth Commandment D Sunday

November 7
1. What is to be understood by the ninth commandment and how far-reaching
is its application? Exodus 20:16.

"This [ninth] precept forbids every effort to injure our neighbor's reputation by
misrepresentation or evil surmising, by slander or tale-bearing. Even the intentional
suppression of truth, by which injury may result to others, is a violation of the ninth
commandment." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 309.

2. Where will the transgressors of the ninth commandment find no admittance?

Psalm 15:1-3.

"[Psalm 15:1-5 quoted.] Here the backbiter is excluded from abiding in the taber-
nacle of God and dwelling in the holy hill of Zion. He that taketh up a reproach against
his neighbor cannot receive the approval of God."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 615.
"When we listen to a reproach against our brother, we take up that reproach. To
the question, 'Lord, who shall abide in Thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in Thy holy
hill?' the psalmist answered, 'He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness,
and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth
evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.'
"What a world of gossip would be prevented if every man would remember that
those who tell him the faults of others will as freely publish his faults at a favorable
opportunity. We should endeavor to think well of all men, especially our brethren, un-
til compelled to think otherwise. We should not hastily credit evil reports." -Ibid.• p. 58.
Slander (Defamation or Backbiting) D Monday
November 8
3. What does the word of God say about slanderers? Jeremiah 20:10; Proverbs
10:18; 2 Timothy 3:1,3.

"Satan has many helpers. Many who profess to be Christians are aiding the tempter
to catch away the seeds of truth from other hearts. Many who listen to the preaching

- 23-
of the word of God make it the subject of criticism at home. They sit in judgment on
the sermon as they would on the words of a lecturer or a political speaker. The mes-
sage that should be regarded as the word of the Lord to them is dwelt upon with trifl-
ing or sarcastic comment. The minister's character, motives, and actions, and the con-
duct of fellow members of the church, are freely discussed. Severe judgment is pro-
nounced, gossip or slander repeated, and this in the hearing of the unconverted."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 45.
"Even some who desire the work of God to prosper will yet weaken the hands of
His servants by hearing, reporting, and half believing the slanders, boasts, and
menaces of His adversaries. Satan works with marvelous success through his agents,
and all who yield to their influence are subject to a bewitching power that destroys the
wisdom of the wise and the understanding of the prudent." -Prophets and Kings, p. 645.

4. Who is the author of all slander? Revelation 12:10 (last part). What made
Lucifer become an accuser? How does he employ professed Christians as
backbiters?

"If he [Satan] could not defend himself, he must accuse, in order to appear just
and righteous, and to make God appear arbitrary and exacting." -Review and Herald,
September 7, 1897.
"As in the days of Christ spies were on His track, so they are on ours now. If Satan
can employ professed believers to act as accusers of the brethren, he is greatly pleased;
for those who do this are just as truly serving him as was Judas when he betrayed
Christ, although they may be doing it ignorantly. Satan is no less active now than in
Christ's day, and those who lend themselves to do his work will represent his spirit."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1163.

Slander (Defamation or Backbiting) (continued) D Tuesday

November 9

5. How did the psalmist warn against evilspeaking? Psalms 59:7; 101:5. What
does the Spirit of Prophecy say in this regard?

"A glance, a word, even an intonation of the voice, may be vital with falsehood,
sinking like a barbed arrow into some heart, inflicting an incurable wound. Thus a
doubt, a reproach, may be cast upon one by whom God would accomplish a good
work, and his influence is blighted, his usefulness destroyed. Among some species of
animals, if one of their number is wounded and falls, he is at once set upon and torn in
pieces by his fellows. The same cruel spirit is indulged by men and women who bear
the name of Christians. They manifest a pharisaical zeal to stone others less guilty
than themselves. There are some who 'point to others' faults and failures to divert at-
tention from their own, or to gain credit for great zeal for God and the church."- Tes-
timonies, vol. 5, p. 59.

6. What did David say in His prayer for protection against caviling tongues?
Psalm 140:1-3. What are some of the evil results of criticism?

"Believers have not infrequently allowed the enemy to work through them at the
very time when they should have been wholly consecrated to God and to the advance-
ment of His work. Unconsciously they have wandered far from the way of righteous-
ness. Cherishing a spirit of criticism and faultfinding, .of pharisaical piety and pride,
they have grieved away the Spirit of God and have greatly retarded the work of God's
messengers."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 125.

- 24-
Talebearing (or Gossip) D Wednesday
November 10

7. What damage does a talebearer do to others and to himself? Proverbs 18:6-

8; 26:17-22; James 1:26. Who is by his side, inspiring him?

"Floating rumors are frequently the destroyers of unity among brethren. There
are some who watch with open mind and ears to catch flying scandal. They gather up
little incidents which may be trifling in themselves, but which are repeated and exag-
gerated until a man is made an offender for a word. Their motto seems to be, 'Report,
and we will report it.' These tale-bearers are doing the devil's work with surprising
fidelity, little knowing how offensive their course is to God. If they would spend half
the energy and zeal that is given to this unholy work in examining their own hearts,
they would find so much to do to cleanse their souls from impurity that they would
have no time or disposition to criticize their brethren, and they would not fall under
the power of this temptation." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1163.
"The spirit of gossip and talebearing is one of Satan's special agencies to sow
discord and strife, to separate friends, and to undermine the faith of many in the
truthfulness of our positions."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 195.

8. How does talebearing affect friendship and unity? Proverbs 16:28; 17:9.

"Brethren sometimes associate together for years, and they think they can trust
those they know so well just as they would trust members of their own family. There
is a freedom and confidence in this association which could not exist between those
not of the same faith. This is very pleasant while mutual faith and brotherly love last;
but let the 'accuser of the brethren' gain admittance to the heart of one of these men,
controlling the mind and the imagination, and jealousies are created, suspicion and
envy are harbored; and he who supposed himself secure in the love and friendship of
his brother, finds himself mistrusted and his motives misjudged. The false brother
forgets his own human frailties, forgets his obligation to think and speak no evillest
he dishonor God and wound Christ in the person of His saints, and every defect that
can be thought of or imagined is commented upon unmercifully, and the character of
a brother is represented as dark and questionable."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 3, pp. 1162, 1163.

Satan's Right-Hand Helpers o Thursday

/
November 11
/

9. Describe Satan's right-hand helpers. Proverbs 16:27.

"There has ever been a class professing godliness, who, instead of following on to
know the truth, make it their religion to seek some fault of character or error of faith
in those with whom they do not agree. Such are Satan's right-hand helpers. Accusers
of the brethren are not few, and they are always active when God is at work and His
servants are rendering Him true homage. They will put a false coloring upon the
words and acts of those who love and obey the truth. They will represent the most
earnest, zealous, self-denying servants of Christ as deceived or deceivers. It is their
work to misrepresent the motives of every true and noble deed, to circulate insinua-
tions, and arouse suspicion in the minds of the inexperienced. In every conceivable
manner they will seek to cause that which is pure and righteous to be regarded as foul
and deceptive." - The Great Controversy, p. 519.

- 25-
10. What kind of "believers" are classed as "church scavengers"? What judg-
ment is pronounced upon those who like to listen to false accusations and
destructive criticism? Proverbs 17:4.

"Those who live upon the husks of others' failings and deficiencies, and who
gather to themselves the unwholesome miasma of their neighbors' neglects and short-
comings, making themselves church scavengers, are no advantage to the society of
which they form a part, but are an actual burden to the community upon which they
inflict themselves."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 194.
"He [Satan] seizes men and women who are selfish and unconsecrated, and makes
of them sentinels to watch the faithful servants of God, to question their words, their
actions, and their motives, and to find fault and murmur at their reproofs and warn-
ings. Through them he creates suspicion and jealousy, and seeks to weaken the cour-
age of the faithful, to please the unsanctified, and to bring to nought the labors of God's
servants. " -Ibid.

INCONTINENT

True Christians, who are preparing for the second coming of Christ, will develop
a character marked by perfect continence or self-control. They will discipline
their appetites, their actions, their words, their thoughts and their feelings. On
the other hand, incontinence-lack of self·restraint, especially where passions
and desires playa role-will mark worldlings more and more.
KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... incontinent" (2 Timothy 3:2, 3).
Self-Control in Speech oSunday
November 14
1. What is written about the wisdom of refraining one's tongue in order to
avoid provocation? Proverbs 10:19; 11:30; James 3:2.

"Some think it is a virtue to be unrestrained, and they will speak in praise of their
outspoken habit of talking out disagreeable things which are in the heart. They let an
angry spirit exhaust itself in a torrent of reproach and faultfinding. The more they
talk, the more excited they become, and Satan stands by to help on the work, for it
suits him. The words irritate the one to whom they are spoken, and they will be
thrown back, giving provocation for still harder words, until a little matter has blazed
into a great flame." - Testimonies, vol. 4. p. 243.
"You may, by a single word spoken in haste and passion, leave a sting in the
hearts of friends which may never be forgotten." -Ibid.
2. How do the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy emphasize the importance of
self-control under provocation? Proverbs 15:1, 18; 16:32; Ecclesiastes 7:9.

"All who profess godliness are under the most sacred obligation to guard the
spirit, and to exercise self-control under the greatest provocation. The burdens placed
upon Moses were very great; few men will ever be so severely tried as he was; yet this
was not allowed to excuse his sin." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 421.
"Men who, like Enoch, are walking in the light of Christ, will exercise self-
control, even under temptation and provocation. Although tried by the perversity and
obstinacy of others, they dare not let impulse bear sway." -Medical Ministry, p. 206.
"Let the Christian bridle his tongue, firmly resolving not to speak harsh, impa-
tient words. With the tongue bridled, he may be victorious in every trial of patience
through which he is called to pass." -Messages to Young People, p. 136.
The Use of the Tongue o Monday
November 15
3. What kind of women have not been a blessing to the world? Proverbs 27:15.
Of what solution does the unfortunate husband often think? Proverbs 25:24;
21:19. What rebuke does the Spirit of Prophecy send to an unconverted wife
and mother?

-27 -
" ... You are easily irritated, and, instead of putting a strict guard upon your
words and actions, you have given loose rein to your passions. The mind is controlled
either by Satan or by Jesus; and when you practice no self-control, Satan rules and
leads you to do and say things that are wholly satanic. This has been repeated so often
that it has become habitual.
"Since you have been living with your present husband you have allowed yourself
to become exasperated at very trivial matters; and at such times you seem to have a
frenzied passion, while Satan stands by and laughs at the misery you are bringing
upon yourself and those whom it is your duty to make happy. Your children have had
transmitted to them your traits of character, and, besides this, they are daily copying
your example of blind, unreasonable passion, impatience, and fretfulness." - Testimonies,
vol. 4, pp. 495, 496.

4. What are the benefits derived from a tame and wholesome tongue? Proverbs
12:18; 15:4; 21:23. How can a Christian bridle his tongue? Philippians 4:13;
James 4:8.

"Through the help that Christ can give, we shall be able to learn to bridle the
tongue. Sorely as He was tried on the point of hasty and angry speech, He never once
sinned with His lips. With patient calmness He met the sneers, the taunts, and the ridi-
cule of His fellow workers at the carpenter's bench. Instead of retorting angrily, He
would begin to sing one of David's beautiful psalms; and His companions, before real-
izing what they were doing, would unite with Him in the hymn. What a transformation
would be wrought in this world if men and women today would follow Christ's exam-
ple in the use of words."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 936.
"If the thoughts, passions, and appetites are kept in due subj~ction, the tongue
will be controlled."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 244.

Eating and Drinking o Tuesday

November 16

5. What example of incontinence, in connection with Nadab and Abihu, stands

as a warning to us? Leviticus 10:1-3,8,9.

"Nadab and Abihu would never have committed that fatal sin had they not first
become partially intoxicated by the free use of wine. They understood that the most
careful and solemn preparation was necessary before presenting themselves in the
sanctuary, where the divine Presence was manifested; but by intemperance they were
disqualified for their holy office. Their minds became confused and their moral per-
ceptions dulled so that they could not discern the difference between the sacred and
the common." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 361, 362.

6. How did the Israelites, with their perverted appetite, provoke the Lord in the
wilderness? Numbers 11:4; Psalms 78:17,18,27-31; 106:15, 16. Referring
to their experience, what warning does Paul, by the Holy Spirit, send to us in
these last days? 1 Corinthians 10:5,6, 11.

"The Lord intends to bring His people back to live upon simple fruits, vegetables,
and grains. He led the children of Israel into the wilderness, where they could not get
a flesh diet; and He gave them the bread of heaven. 'Man did eat angels' food.' But
they craved the fleshpots of Egypt, and mourned and cried for flesh, notwithstanding
that the Lord had promised them that if they would submit to His will, He would
carry them into the land of Canaan, and establish them there, a pure, holy, happy peo-

- 28-
pIe, and there should not be a feeble one in all their tribes; for He would take away all
sickness from among them.
"But although they had a plain 'Thus saith the Lord,' they mourned and wept,
and murmured and complained, until the Lord was wroth with them. Because they
were so determined to have the flesh of dead animals, He gave them the very diet He
had withheld from them."-Medical Ministry, p. 277.

Eating and Drinking (continued) D Wednesday

November 17

7. What controversy does the Lord have, today, with many who profess to
believe the threefold message? Isaiah 22:12-14. How do we know that this
prophecy may also be applied to the last days? Compare Isaiah 22:20-22
with Revelation 3:7, 8.

"Shall we not bear a decided testimony against the indulgence of perverted ap-
petite? Will any who are ministers of the gospel, proclaiming the most solemn truth
ever given to mortals, set an example in returning to the fleshpots of Egypt? Will
those who are supported by the tithe from God's storehouse permit themselves by
self-indulgence to poison the life-giving current flowing through their veins? Will they
disregard the light and warnings that God has given them?"- Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 159,
160.
"Many who are now only half converted on the question of meat eating will go
from God's people to walk no more with them." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 382.

8. What will be the end of those who, while professing to be Christians, eat the
flesh of swine, rodents, and other unclean animals? Isaiah 66:15-18. (Com-
pare with 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Matthew 25:31.)

Incontinence Regarding the Seventh Commandment D Thursday

November 18

9. What tragic event was recorded in the Scriptures as a warning to all future
generations? Numbers 25:1-4,9. What other examples stand as a warning?
Judges 16:1,4; 1 Kings 11:1.

"The Israelites, who could not be overcome by the arms or by the enchantments
of Midian, fell a prey to her harlots. Such is the power that woman, enlisted in the ser-
vice of Satan, has exerted to entrap and destroy souls. 'She hath cast down many
wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.' Proverbs 7:26. It was thus
that the children of Seth were seduced from their integrity, and the holy seed became
corrupt. It was thus that Joseph was tempted. Thus Samson betrayed his strength, the
defense of Israel, into the hands of the Philistines. Here David stumbled. And Solo-
mon, the wisest of kings, who had thrice been called the beloved of his God, became a
slave of passion, and sacrificed his integrity to the same bewitching power." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 457.

10. What condition, characteristic of these last days, would parallel the moral
situation prevalent in the time of Noah? Genesis 6:1, 2, 11, 12; Matthew
24:38, 39; 2 Timothy 3:3 (middle part).

"The sins that called for vengeance upon the antediluvian world exist today. The
fear of God is banished from the hearts of men, and His law is treated with indif-

- 29-
ference and contempt. The intense worldliness of that generation is equaled by that of
the generation now living. Said Christ, 'As in the days that were before the Flood they
were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah
entered into the ark, and knew not until the Flood came, and took them all away; so
shall also the coming of the Son of man be.' Matthew 24:38,39. God did not condemn
the antediluvians for eating and drinking; He had given them the fruits of the earth in
great abundance to supply their physical wants. Their sin consisted in taking these
gifts without gratitude to the Giver, and debasing themselves by indulging appetite
without restraint. It was lawful for them to marry. Marriage was in God's order; it was
one of the first institutions which He established. He gave special directions concern-
ing this ordinance, clothing it with sanctity and beauty; but these directions were for-
gotten, and marriage was perverted and made to minister to passion.
"A similar condition of things exists now. That which is lawful in itself is carried
to excess. Appetite is indulged without restraint. Professed followers of Christ are to-
day eating and drinking with the drunken, while their names stand in honored church
records. Intemperance benumbs the moral and spiritual powers and prepares the way
for indulgence of the lower passions. Multitudes feel under no moral obligation to curb
their sensual desires, and they become the slaves of lust." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 101.

DESPISERS OF THOSE WHO ARE GOOD

God had drawn a clear line of distinction between the converted and the uncon-
verted. "Those who love and fear God will not descend to the world's level in
choosing the society of the vain and trifling" (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 87).
The true followers of Christ, who respect themselves, will shun wrong associa-
tions, while those who are vile will show contempt for those who refuse to join
them in their wild and reckless living.
KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... despisers of those that are good" (2 Timothy
3:2,3).
No Affinity Between God's People and the World D Sunday
November 21
1. What warning shows that men cannot please God and the world at the same
time? Matthew 6:24; James 4:4; 2 Corinthians 6:15.

"This world is to the Christian a land of strangers and enemies. Unless he shall
take for his defense the divine panoply and wield the sword of the Spirit he will
become the prey of the powers of darkness. The faith of all will be tested. All will be
tried as gold is tried in the fire." - Testimonies, vol. 5. p. 104.
"Those who begin their Christian life by being half and half, will at last be found
enlisted on the enemy's side, whatever may have been their first intentions. And to be
an apostate, a traitor to the cause of God, is more serious than death; for it means the
loss of eternal life.
"Double-minded men and women are Satan's best allies. Whatever favorable opin-
ion they may have of themselves, they are dissemblers. All who are loyal to God and
the truth must stand firmly for the right because it is right." - The SDA Bibte Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1086.

2. Why can there be no affinity between the world and the true followers of
Christ? 1 John 5:18, 19; Ephesians 5:11; 1 Corinthians 2:12-14.

"Worldly men are governed by worldly principles. They can appreciate no other.
Worldly policy and public opinion comprise the principle of action that governs them
and leads them to practice the form of rightdoing. But God's people cannot be gov-
erned by these motives."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361.
"Whatever may be their profession, it is only those who are world servers at heart
that act from policy rather than principle in religious things, We should choose the
right because it is right, and leave consequences with God. To men of principle, faith,
and daring, the world is indebted for its great reforms. By such men the work of
reform for this time must be carried forward." - The Great Controversy, p. 460.
Terror to Evildoers D Monday
November 22
3. How did sinners look upon the work done by the apostles? Acts 17:6 (second
part). Give a brief description of the early Christians.

- 31-
"The early Christians were indeed a peculiar people. Their blameless deportment
and unswerving faith were a continual reproof that disturbed the sinner's peace.
Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, or honorary titles, they were a ter-
ror to evildoers wherever their character and doctrines were known. Therefore they
were hated by the wicked, even as Abel was hated by the ungodly Cain. For the same
reason that Cain slew Abel, did those who sought to throw off the restraint of the Holy
Spirit, put to death God's people. It was for the same reason that the Jews rejected and
crucified the Saviour-because the purity and holines of His character was a constant
rebuke to their selfishness and corruption. From the days of Christ until now His faith-
ful disciples have excited the hatred and opposition of those who love and follow the
ways of sin." - The Great Controversy, p. 46.
4. From past experiences, how should we expect sinners to react when God's
people do the will of the Lord in everything? Give examples. Genesis 35:2, 3,
5; Joshua 2:9. Give a brief description of the early Seventh Day Adventists.

"When the truth we now cherish was first seen to be Bible truth, how very
strange it appeared, and how strong was the opposition we had to meet in presenting
it to the people for the first time; but how earnest and sincere were the obedient,
truth-loving laborers! We were indeed a peculiar people. We were few in numbers,
without wealth, without worldly wisdom or worldly honors; and yet we believed God
and were strong and successful, a terror to evildoers."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 534.
Hated by the World o Tuesday
November 23
5. For what reason did Cain hate and kill Abel? 1 John 3: 12, 13; What will evil-
doers keep on doing to the very end, even with the support of the churches?
John 15:18; 2 Timothy 3:3 (last phrase).

"Among many of the professing followers of Christ there is the same pride, for-
malism, and selfishness, the same spirit of oppression, that held so large a place in the
Jewish heart. In the future, men claiming to be Christ's representatives will take a
course similar to that followed by the priests and rulers in their treatment of Christ
and the apostles. In the great crisis through which they are soon to pass, the faithful
servants of God will encounter the same hardness of heart, the same cruel determina-
tion, the same unyielding hatred." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 431.
6. Why will the servants of God be despised, hated, defamed and persecuted by
the servants of Satan? John 15:19; 1 Corinthians 4:13; 1 Peter 4:3, 4.

The Sword of Strife and Persecution o Wednesday

November 24
7. In what sense is the Gospel a message of peace? John 14:27; Matthew 11:28-
30. In what sense is it called a sword? Matthew 10:34-36.

"Christianity is a system which, received and obeyed, would spread peace, har-
mony, and happiness throughout the earth. The religion of Christ will unite in close
brotherhood all who accept its teachings. It was the mission of Jesus to reconcile men
to God, and thus to one another. But the world at large are under the control of Satan,
Christ's bitterest foe. The gospel presents to them principles of life which are wholly
at variance with their habits and desires, and they rise in rebellion against it. They
hate the purity which reveals and condemns their sins, and they persecute and de-
stroy those who would urge upon them its just and holy claims. It is in this sense-

- 32-
because the exalted truths it brings occasion hatred and strife-that the gospel is called
a sword."-The Great Controversy, p. 47.

8. What did the Saviour say to His disciples, foreseeing the days of trial and
darkness for the church? John 15:20; 2 Timothy 3:12. What will cause
persecution all over the world?

"It is only because of the spirit of compromise with sin, because the great truths of
the word of God are so indifferently regarded, because there is so little vital godliness
in the church, that Christianity is apparently so popular with the world. Let there be a
revival of the faith and power of the early church, and the spirit of persecution will be
revived, and the fires of persecution will be rekindled."-The Great Controversy, p. 48.
Words of Warning and Encouragement o Thursday
November 25
9. What will happen to those who, trying to win popularity, lower the standards
and meet the demands of the world? What warning was written down for this
class? Matthew 7:13,14; 1 John 2:15-17.

"Those who think they can serve the world and yet love God are double-minded.
But they cannot serve God and mammon. They are men of two minds, loving the
world and losing all sense of their obligation to God, and yet professing to be Christ's
followers. They are neither the one thing nor the other. They will lose both worlds
unless they cleanse their hands and purify their hearts through obedience to the pure
principles of truth."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 531.

10. What is our only safe course in the face of hatred, defamation, and persecu-
tion? Matthew 5:44; Romans 12:18-21.

"Life is disciplinary. While in the world, the Christian will meet with adverse in-
fluences. There will be provocations to test the temper; and it is by meeting these in a
right spirit that the Christian graces are developed. If injuries and insults are meekly
borne, if insulting words are responded to by gentle answers, and oppressive acts by
kindness, this is evidence that the Spirit of Christ dwells in the heart, that sap from
the living Vine is flowing to the branches. We are in the school of Christ in this life,
where we are to learn to be meek and lowly of heart; and in the day of final accounts
we shall see that all the obstacles we meet, all the hardships and annoyances that we
are called to bear, are practical lessons in the application of principles of Christian life.
If well endured, they develop the Christlike in the character and distinguish the Chris-
tian from the worldling."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 344.

Lesson 10 Sabbath, December 4, 1982

TRAITORS

A traitor is one who acts treacherously or perfidiously; one who betrays a trust,
or duty, or friend, etc.; one who is disloyal to anyone to whom he owes allegiance
or is bound by promises, love, or friendship; or one who helps the enemies of a
cause he pretends to defend. Disloyalty or treachery is a trait of character which
is becoming more and more common in the twentieth century.

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... traitors" (2 Timothy 3:2, 4).
Faithfulness 0 Sunday
November 28
1. What word is used in the Bible to designate those who are not traitors? Psalm
12:1. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say about such men, who are so rare
in our days?

"The greatest want of the world is the want of men-men who will not be bought
or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call
sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the
pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall." -Education, p. 57.
2. Mention a few of the many outstanding names of men who were not traitors.
Job 1:1; Numbers 12:7; Revelation 2:13. How does the Spirit of Prophecy
depict Paul standing before Nero?

"Faithful among the faithless, loyal among the disloyal, he [Paul] stands as God's
representative, and his voice is as a voice from heaven. There is no fear, no sadness,
no discouragement in word or look. Strong in a consciousness of innocence, clothed in
the panoply of truth, he rejoices that he is a son of God. His words are as a shout of
victory above the roar of battle. He declares the cause to which he has devoted his
life, to be the only cause that can never fail. Though he may perish, the gospel will not
perish. God lives, and His truth will triumph." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 495.
Treachery o Monday
November 29
3. What is one of the greatest calamities that can befall an individual, or family,
or church, or society? Isaiah 24:16; Malachi 2:10. What reversal of values
will characterize those who allow Satan to put confusion into their minds?

"Satan is working with great power in and through the children of disobedience
to exalt treason and apostasy as truth and loyalty."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 16. .
"There will come a time when, because of our advocacy of Bible truth, we shall
be treated as traitors; but let not this time be hastened by unadvised movements that
stir up animosity and strife."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 394.

- 34-
4. What has every true Christian been called to be under the banner of Christ? 2
Timothy 2:3, 4. What attitude will bring disaster upon Christ's army?
Jeremiah 9:2, 3.

"One man's cowardice or treachery may bring disaster upon the entire army."-
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 395.
"What if half the soldiers in an army were idling or asleep when ordered to be on
duty; the result would be defeat, captivity, or death. Should any escape from the
hands of the enemy, would they be thought worthy of a reward? No; they would speed-
ily receive the sentence of death. And is the church of Christ careless or unfaithful, far
more important consequences are involved. A sleeping army of Christian soldiers-
what could be more terrible!" -Ibid., p. 394.
Treachery (continued) D Tuesday
November 30
5. What warning is given to our youth who develop a high standard of efficiency
and usefulness? Luke 9:62. What actions are considered as treason against
God?

"If the youth will consecrate their minds and hearts to God's service, they will
reach a high standard of efficiency and usefulness. This is the standard that the Lord
expects the youth to attain. To do less than this is to refuse to make the most of God-
given opportunities. This will be looked upon as treason against God, a failure to work
for the good of humanity." -Messages to Young People, p. 41.
"The church needs the very help which God designed they [the youth] should give.
Those professing His name have not consecrated their powers fully and entirely to
Him, but have yielded them, in a measure, to the service of Satan. Such have been, and
still are, robbing God. Like the unfaithful steward to whom were entrusted talents,
they have hid the gifts of God in the world."- Testimonies. vol. 5, pp. 115, 116.
6. What is the most positive evidence of treachery to Christ? 1 Kings 9:9;
Jeremiah 3:6-8, 20.

"His [God's] authority should be kept distinct and plain before the world, and no
laws are to be acknowledged that come in collision with the laws of Jehovah. If in de-
fiance of God's arrangements the world be allowed to influence our decisions or our
actions, the purpose of God is defeated. However specious the pretext, if the church
waver here, there is written against her in the books of heaven a betrayal of the most
sacred trusts, and treachery to the kingdom of Christ."- Testimonies to Ministers. pp. 16, 17.
False Brethren D Wednesday
December 1
7. What did Jesus suffer at the hand of those He had come to save? John 13:2;
Acts 7:52. Describe the character and experience of Judas.

"Judas was a religious fraud. He held up a high standard for others, but he himself
utterly failed to reach the Bible standard. He did not bring the religion of Christ into
his life. How many today are, like Judas, betraying their Lord?"- The SDA Bible Commen-
tary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1102.

8. What suffering, brought upon Paul, was partly due to the work of traitors? 2
Corinthians 11:23-26.

- 35-
"Burdened by divisions in the church, meeting with ingratitude and betrayal from
some to whom he [Paul] looked for sympathy and support, realizing the peril of the
churches that harbored iniquity, compelled to bear a close, searching testimony in re-
proof of sin, he was at the same time weighed down with fear that he might have dealt
with too great severity."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 322.

False Brethren (continued) o Thursday

December 2

9. What did Christ say as He had in mind the persecution that His followers
would suffer both under pagan and papal Rome? Mark 13: 12, 13.

"Christians were falsely accused of the most dreadful crimes and declared to be
the cause of great calamities-famine, pestilence, and earthquake. As they became the
objects of popular hatred and suspicion, informers stood ready, for the sake of gain,
to betray the innocent."- The Great Controversy. p. 40.

10. How will history repeat itself in these last days? Matthew 24:9, 10; 2 Timothy
3:4 (first part).

"When the test and trial comes to every soul, there will be apostasies. Traitors,
heady, highminded and self-sufficient men will turn away from the truth, making
shipwreck of their faith. Why?-Because they did not dig deep, and make their foun-
dation sure. They were not riveted to the eternal Rock." -Fundamentals of Christian Educa-
tion, p. 460.
"Because of persecution, many will be offended. The principles of the truth cut
directly across their practise, and they will stumble and fall, apostatizing from the
faith they once advocated. Many who have professed to love the truth will then show
that they have no vital union with the True Vine. They will be cut away, as branches
that bear no fruit, and will be bound up with unbelievers, scoffers, and mockers.
"Those who apostatize in time of trial will bear false witness and betray their
brethren, to secure their own safety. They will tell where their brethren are conceal-
ed, putting the wolves on their track. Christ has warned us of this, that we may not be
surprised at the cruel, unnatural course pursued by friends and relatives." -Review and

HEADSTRONG, FROWARD AND RECKLESS

The time of the end is characterized by a headstrong, froward and reckless spirit.
We see these characteristics in all classes of society. There are often found those
who are hard to manage, who act rashly and foolishly, who are determined to
have their own way, and who are deaf to the voice of reason.

Reckless Spirit o Sunday

December 5

1. What advice, given by the town clerk of Ephesus, is highly applicable today?
Acts 19:36 (second part). What disposition is seen in many professed believ-
ers?

"There are many restless spirits who will not submit to discipline, system, and
order. They think that their liberties would be abridged were they to lay aside their
own judgment and submit to the judgment of those of experience. The work of God
will not progress unless there is a disposition to submit to order and expel the reckless,
disorderly spirit of fanaticism from their meetings."- Testimonies, vol. I, p. 413.

2. What representation is used with reference to reckless believers? Psalm

32:9.

"The spasmodic, fitful movements of some who claim to be Christians are well
represented by the work of strong but untrained horses."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 258.

Recklessness Associated With Presumption o Monday

December 6

3. What temptation involves recklessness and presumption? Matthew 4:6; 1

Corinthians 10:9.

"There are those who have a reckless spirit, which they term courage and
bravery. They needlessly place themselves in scenes of danger and peril, thus expos-
ing themselves to temptations out of which it would require a miracle of God to bring
them unharmed and untainted. Satan's temptation to the Saviour of the world to cast
Himself from the pinnacle of the temple was firmly met and resisted. Satan quoted a
promise of God as security that Christ might with safety do this on the strength of the
promise. Christ met the temptation with scripture: 'It is written, ...Thou shalt not
tempt the Lord thy God.' The only safe course for Christians is to repulse the enemy
with God's word. Satan urges men into places where God does not require them to go,
and presents scripture to justify his suggestions."- Testimonies, vol. 3. p. 482.

- 37-
4. What promise is very precious to a Christian, especially when he must face
dangers? Psalms 34:7; 37:5. How is this promise affected by recklessness and
presumption?

"Your only safety is in studying yourself, your weakness and failings. Do not cease
to guard yourself. Watch yourself more closely when at home. Watch yourself when
away from home. You neglect your closet duties, layoff your armor, and give up to a
spirit of recklessness that drives angels from you and from your family."-Testimonies,
vol. 1, pp. 435. 436.
"God's precious promises are not given to strengthen man in a presumptuous
course or for him to rely upon when he rushes needlessly into danger. The Lord re-
quires us to move with a humble dependence upon His providence."-Ibid., vol. 3, p. 482.

Recklessness: Result of Wrong Training o Tuesday

December 7

5. What is the basis of true education? Psalm 111:10. What are its fruits?
James 3: 17, 18. What is often overlooked in the boastful claims made in
behalf of modern education?

"It is the boast of the present age that never before did men possess so great facil-
ities for the acquirement of knowledge, or manifest so general an interest in education.
Yet despite this vaunted progress, there exists an unparalleled spirit of insubordina-
tion and recklessness in the rising generation; mental and moral degeneracy are well-
nigh universal. Popular education does not remedy the evil." -Fundamentals of Christian
Education. p. 64.

6. How do many people encourage recklessness through their wrong course?

Proverbs 13:1; 23:9; 14:16; 2 Timothy 3:2, 4.

"God has given the youth talents to improve for His glory; but many apply these
gifts to unsanctified, unholy purposes. Many have abilities which, if cultivated, would
yield a rich harvest of mental, moral, and physical acquirements. But they do not stop
to consider. They do not count the cost of their course of action. They encourage a
recklessness and folly that will not listen to counselor reproof." -Messages to Young People,
p.165.

Two Contrasted Examples o Wednesday

December 8

7. Describe the unfortunate experience of Samson, a headstrong young man

who was infatuated with a young woman. Judges 14:1-3; 15:1-3. How did
Sister White admonish a headstrong young man who was heading in the
wrong direction?

"The young lady upon whom you have placed your affections has not depth of
thought or character. Her life has been frivolous, and her mind is narrow and superfi-
cial. Yet you have steadily refused to be cautioned by your father, your loving sister,
or by your friends in the church. I came to you as Christ's ambassador; but your strong
feelings, your self-confidence, closed your eyes to danger and your ears to warnings.
Your course has been as persistent as though no one knew quite so much as yourself or
as though the salvation of your soul depended upon your following your own judgment.

- 38-
"Should every young man who professes the truth do as you have done, what
would be the condition of families and of the church? Consider the influence of the dis-
respect you have shown for your parents by your self-will and self-sufficiency. You
are among the class described as heady, high-minded."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 106.

8. Describe the blessed experience of Isaac, who was not headstrong, but trac-
table and submissive. Genesis 24:1-4, 58, 67. Give the characteristics of
true love in contrast to passion.

"Love ... is not unreasonable; it is not blind. It is pure and holy. But the passion
of the natural heart is another thing altogether. While pure love will take God into all
its plans, and will be in perfect harmony with the Spirit of God, passion will be
headstrong, rash, unreasonable, defiant of all restraint, and will make the object of its
choice an idol. In all the deportment of one who possesses true love, the grace of God
will be shown. Modesty, simplicity, sincerity, morality, and religion will characterize
every step toward an alliance in marriage." - The Adventist Home. p. 50.

Counsels on Frowardness and Recklessness o Thursday

December 9

9. What does the Bible say about the lack of success of a froward man? Prov-
erbs 17:20; 22:5. What advice did Sister White send to a reckless person?

"A spirit of self-confidence is in keeping with your experience. Had you a more
thorough experience in the things of God you would realize that the fruits you bear
are bad. They contain no nourishment, but fill all who partake of them with bitterness.
You must overcome your overbearing, dictatorial spirit. I have strong hope, my dear
brother, that you, who have shown that you have moral courage to face an enemy in
yourself, and fortitude to battle with the foe of appetite and strong evil habits which
girded you about as with iron bands, will go to work right here and gain the victory.
You have possessed a reckless spirit. ... " - Testimonies. vol. 2, p. 164.

10. How can we be shielded against frowardness and recklessness? Proverbs

2:10-15.

"If those who claim to be Christians will heed the word of Christ, all who come in
contact with them will acknowledge that they have been with Jesus and have learned
of Him."- Testimonies. vol. 6, p. 70.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, December 18, 1982

PLEASURE LOVERS

Pleasure seeking-this most subtle and dangerous temptation of Satan-is one of

the signs of the last days. "The continual craving for pleasurable amusements
reveals the deep longings of the soul. But those who drink at this fountain of
worldly pleasure, will find their soul-thirst still unsatisfied. They are deceived;
they mistake mirth for happiness; and when the excitement ceases, many sink
down into the depths of despondency and despair" (Fundamentals of Christian
Education, p. 422).

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be ... lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God" (2
Timothy 3:2, 4).

Noah's Time-Our Time o Sunday

December 12

1. What similarity can be seen between the antediluvians and the present gen-
eration? Luke 17:26.

"In infinite mercy a last warning message has been sent to the world, announcing
that Christ is at the door and calling attention to God's broken law. But as the antedi-
luvians rejected with scorn the warning of Noah, so will the pleasure lovers of today
reject the message of God's faithful servants. The world pursues its unvarying round,
absorbed as ever in its business and its pleasures, while the wrath of God is about to
be visited on the transgressors of His law."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 99, 100.

2. How were the people of Noah's day caught by surprise? Luke 17:27. How
will the professed people of God, in these last days, be taken by surprise?

"Before the Flood, after Noah entered the ark, God shut him in and shut the
ungodly out; but for seven days the people, knowing not that their doom was fixed,
continued their careless, pleasure-loving life and mocked the warnings of impending
judgment. 'So,' says the Saviour, 'shall also the coming of the Son of man be.' Mat-
thew 24:39. Silently, unnoticed as the midnight thief, will come the decisive hour
which marks the fixing of every man's destiny, the final withdrawal of mercy's offer
to guilty men." - The Great Controversy, p. 491.
"When the professed people of God are uniting with the world, living as they live,
and joining with them in forbidden pleasures; when the luxury of the world becomes
the luxury of the church; when the marriage bells are chiming, and all are looking for-
ward to many years of worldly prosperity-then, suddenly as the lightning flashes
from the heavens, will come the end of their bright visions and delusive hopes." -Ibid.,
pp. 338, 339.

Lot's Time-Our Time D Monday
December 13

3. What parallel did the Lord draw between the days of Lot and our days? Luke
17:28.

"In Sodom there was mirth and revelry, feasting and drunkenness. The vilest and
most brutal passions were unrestrained. The people openly defied God and His law
and delighted in deeds of violence. Though they had before them the example of the
antediluvian world, and knew how the wrath of God had been manifested in their
destruction, yet they followed the same course of wickedness." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.
157.
"In the courts and lanes of the great cities, in the lonely byways of the country,
are families and individuals-perhaps strangers in a strange land-who are without
church relations, and who, in their loneliness, come to feel that God has forgotten
them. They do not understand what they must do to be saved. Many are sunken in
sin. Many are in distress. They are pressed with suffering, want, unbelief,
despondency. Disease of every type afflicts them, both in body and in soul. They long
to find a solace for their troubles, and Satan tempts them to seek it in lusts and
pleasures that lead to ruin and death. He is offering them the apples of Sodom, that
will turn to ashes upon their lips. They are spending their money for that which is not
bread and their labor for that which satisfieth not." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 232, 233.

4. What happened to the pleasure-seeking throng in Sodom? Luke 17:29. What

will be the fate of all pleasure-seekers in the day of God? Luke 17:30; Isaiah
13:9.

"Like the dwellers in the vale of Siddim, the people are dreaming of prosperity
and peace. 'Escape for thy life,' is the warning from the angels of God; but other
voices are heard saying, 'Be not excited; there is no cause for alarm.' The multitudes
cry, 'Peace and safety,' while Heaven declares that swift destruction is about to come
upon the transgressor. On the night prior to their destruction, the cities of the plain
rioted in pleasure and derided the fears and warnings of the messenger of God; but
those scoffers perished in the flames; that very night the door of mercy was forever
closed to the wicked, careless inhabitants of Sodom. God will not always be mocked;
He will not long be trifled with. 'Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with
wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and He shall destroy the sinners
thereof out of it.' Isaiah 13:9. The great mass of the world will reject God's mercy,
and will be overwhelmed in swift and irretrievable ruin." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 167.

Playing Into the Hands of Satan o Tuesday

December 14

5. Why was it wrong for Lot and his family to move into Sodom? Ezekiel 16:49,
50; Jude 7. For what purpose does Satan attract many people to the cities?

"The pursuit of pleasure and amusement centers in the cities. Many parents who
choose a city home for their children, thinking to give them greater advantages, meet
with disappointment, and too late repent their terrible mistake. The cities of today are
fast becoming like Sodom and Gomorrah. The many holidays encourage idleness.
The exciting sports-theatergoing, horse racing, gambling, liquor-drinking, and
reveling-stimulate every passion to intense activity. The youth are swept away by
the popular current. Those who learn to love amusement for its own sake open the

- 41-
door to a flood of temptations. They give themselves up to social gaiety and
thoughtless mirth, and their intercourse with pleasure lovers has an intoxicating effect
upon the mind. They are led on from one form of dissipation to another, until they
lose both the desire and the capacity for a life of usefulness. Their religious aspira-
tions are chilled; their spiritual life is darkened. All the nobler faculties of the soul, all
that link man with the spiritual world, are debased." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 54, 55.

6. In view of the pleasure-seeking spirit that would be so prevalent in these last

days, what warnings should we take to heart? Luke 21:34; Romans 13:13.
Why is it much more difficult for one who lives in the city to heed these
warnings?

"Life in the cities is false and artificial. The intense passion for money getting, the
whirl of excitement and pleasure seeking, the thirst for display, the luxury and ex-
travagance, all are forces that, with the great masses of mankind, are turning the
mind from life's true purpose. They are opening the door to a thousand evils. Upon
the youth they have almost irresistible power.
"One of the most subtle and dangerous temptations that assail the children and
youth in the cities is the love of pleasure."- The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 364.

Daily Occurrences o Wednesday

December 15

7. Who are frequent victims of accidents, disaster, and ruin? Job 31:3. How is
Satan working through pleasure lovers to destroy pleasure lovers?

"Men who use liquor make themselves the slaves of Satan.... He offers tempting
bribes to allure them, that by indulging wrong habits and appetites, they may place
themselves where he can control their reason, as a workman handles an instrument.
Then he works to destroy the pleasure lovers.
"Thus men co-operate with Satan, as his agents, his instruments. They cannot see
what they are about. Signals are made incorrectly, and cars collide with each other.
Then comes horror, mutilation, and death. This condition of things will become more
and more marked. The daily papers will relate many terrible accidents. Yet the
saloons will be made just as enticing."- Temperance. p. 34.

8. For what purpose does the Lord permit calamities to come upon pleasure
resorts? Isaiah 26:9 (second part), 10.

"During a vision of the night, I stood on an eminence, from which I could see
houses shaken like a reed in the wind. Buildings, great and small, were falling to the
ground. Pleasure resorts, theaters, hotels, and the homes of the wealthy were shaken
and shattered. Many lives were blotted out of existence, and the air was filled with
the shrieks of the injured and the terrified."- Testimonies. vol. 9, pp. 92, 93.
"How frequently we hear of earthquakes and tornadoes, of destruction by fire
and flood, with great loss of life and property! Apparently these calamities are
capricious outbreaks of seemingly disorganized, unregulated forces, but in them
God's purpose may be read. They are one of the means by which He seeks to arouse
men and women to a sense of their danger."-Ibid., vol. 8, p. 252.
"God sends these judgments to bring men and women to their senses. He has a
purpose in everything that He permits to take place in our world, and He desires us to
be so spiritually minded that we shall be able to perceive His working in the events so
unusual in the past, but now of almost daily occurrence." -Ibid., vol. 7, p. 103.

Two Distinct Classes o Thursday
December 16

9. According to the apostle Paul, what is one of the signs of the last days? 2
Timothy 3:4 (second part).

"One of the sins that constitute one of the signs of the last days, is that professed
Christians are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God." -Messages to Young People. p. 84.
"The crisis is stealing gradually upon us. The sun shines in the heavens, passing
over its usual round, and the heavens still declare the glory of God. Men are still eating
and drinking, planting and building, marrying, and giving in marriage. Merchants are
still buying and selling. Men are jostling one against another, contending for the
highest place. Pleasure lovers are still crowding to theaters, horse races, gambling
hells. The highest excitement prevails, yet probation's hour is fast closing, and every
case is about to be eternally decided. Satan sees that his time is short. He has set all his
agencies at work that men may be deceived, deluded, occupied and entranced, until
the day of probation shall be ended, and the door of mercy be forever shut." - The Desire
of Ages. p. 636.

10. In contrast to the lovers of pleasures, what will be seen in those who are actu-
ally preparing for the coming of Christ? Matthew 6:33; Colossians 3:1, 2;
Philippians 3:20.

"The love and grace of God! Oh, precious grace! more valuable than fine gold. It
elevates and ennobles the spirit beyond all other principles, and sets the affections
upon heaven. While those around us may be vain and engaged in pleasure-seeking
and folly, our conversation is in heaven, whence we look for the Saviour; the soul is
reaching out after God for pardon and peace, for righteousness and true holiness.
Converse with God and contemplation of things above transform the soul into the
likeness of Christ."- Testimonies. vol. 2, p. 145.

Lesson 13 Sabbath, December 25, 1982

HAVING A FORM OF GODLINESS

"To substitute external forms of religion for holiness of heart and life is still as
pleasing to the unrenewed nature as it was in the days of" Christ and the apostles.
"Today, as then, there are false spiritual guides, to whose doctrines many listen
eagerly. It is Satan's studied effort to divert minds from the hope of salvation
through faith in Christ and obedience to the law of God" (The Acts of the Apostles,
p.387).

KEY TEXT: "For men shall be lovers of their own selves ... having a form of
godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away" (2
Timothy 3:2, 5).

Formal Religion D Sunday

December 19

1. What kind of religion has a natural attraction for the carnal heart? Ezekiel
33:31.

"How often, in our own day, is the love of pleasure disguised by a 'form of godli-
ness'! A religion that permits men, while observing the rites of worship, to devote

-44-
themselves to selfish or sensual gratification, is as pleasing to the multitudes now as
in the days of Israel." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 317.

2. Why is it that most people are content with a formal religion? What condition
are they unwilling to accept? Matthew 16:24; 7:21.

"God requires of His people works of faith and obedience corresponding to the
blessings and privileges bestowed. Obedience requires a sacrifice and involves a
cross; and this is why so many of the professed followers of Christ refused to receive
the light from heaven."- The Great Controversy, p. 316.
Forfeiting the Power of Godliness o Monday
December 20
3. How does a church forfeit the presence of God? 2 Chronicles 15:2 (second
part); Isaiah 59:1-4. What will happen if the instruction in 1 John 1:7 is over·
looked?

"Unless the church will follow on in His opening providence, accepting every ray
of light, performing every duty which may be revealed, religion will inevitably degen-
erate into the observance of forms, and the spirit of vital godliness will disappear."-
The Great Controversy, p. 316.

4. What are some of the chara~teristicsof those whQ have been left without the
power of godliness? Isaiah 30:9, 10.

''They [the fallen churches] bear the name of being Christ's followers; yet it is im-
possible to distinguish them from the world. Ministers take their texts from the Word
cif God, but preach smooth things. To this the natural heart feels no objection. It is only
the spirit and power of the truth and the salvation of Christ that are hateful to the car-
nal heart. There is nothing in the popular ministry that stirs the wrath of Satan, makes
the sinner tremble, or applies to the heart and conscience the fearful realitieB of the
judgment soon to come. Wicked men are generally pleased with a form of piety with-
out true godliness, and they will aid and support such a religion." -Early Writings, p. 273.
Christianity Today o Tuesday
December 21
5. According to the apostle Paul, what will be the special characteristic of the
last generation of professed Christians? 1 Timothy 3:5. By what class are
they represented in the parable of the ten virgins? Matthew 25:3.

"The class represented by the foolish virgins are not hypocrites. They have a
regard for the truth, they have advocated the truth, they are attracted to those who
believe the truth; but they have not yielded themselves to the Holy Spirit's working.
They have not fallen upon the Rock, Christ Jesus, and permitted their old nature to be
broken up. This class are represented also by the stony-ground hearers. They receive
the word with readiness, but they fail of assimilating its principles. Its influence is not
abiding. The Spirit works upon man's heart, according to his desire and consent im-
planting in him a new nature; but the class represented by the foolish virgins have
been content with a superficial work. They do not know God. They have not studied
His character; they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do not know
how to trust, how to look and live. Their service to God degenerates into a form."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 411.

- 45-
6. After the presence of God had been withdrawn from the Jewish nation, what
was carried on in the temple at Jerusalem, as if nothing special had happened?
Acts 18:21; 21:26. What parallel does the Spirit of Prophecy draw between
the days of the apostles and the final days of this earth's history?

"When God's presence was finally withdrawn from the Jewish nation, priests and
people knew it not. Though under the control of Satan, and swayed by the most horri-
ble and malignant passions, they still regarded themselves as the chosen of God. The
ministration in the temple continued; sacrifices were offered upon its polluted altars,
and daily the divine blessing was invoked upon a people guilty of the blood of God's
dear Son and seeking to slay His ministers and apostles. So when the irrevocable deci-
sion of the sanctuary has been pronounced and the destiny of the world has been for-
ever fixed, the inhabitants of the earth will know it not. The forms of religion will be
continued by a people from whom the Spirit of God has been finally withdrawn; and the
satanic zeal with which the prince of evil will inspire them for the accomplishment of his
malignant designs, will bear the semblance of zeal for God."- The Great Controversy, p. 615.

A Faithful Remnant o Wednesday

December 22

7. With reference to the withdrawal of the presence and power of God, how has
history been repeated down through the ages? Romans 11:1-5.

"Human reasoning has ever sought to evade or set aside the simple, direct in-
structions of the word of God. In every age, a majority of the professed followers of
Christ have disregarded those precepts which enjoin self-denial and humility, which
require modesty and simplicity of conversation, deportment, and apparel. The result
has ever been the same,-departure from the teachings of the gospel leads to the
adoption of the fashions, customs, and principles of the world. Vital godliness gives
place to a dead formalism. The presence and power of God, withdrawn from those
world-loving circles, are found with a class of humbler worshipers, who are willing to
obey the teachings of the Sacred Word. Through successive generations, this course
has been pursued. One after another, different denominations have risen and,
yielding their simplicity, have lost, in a great measure, their early power." -Messages to
Young People, p. 354.

8. On what condition are God's presence and power assured to us? Psalm 36:9;
John 15:14; 8:31; 12:35. How can we keep formality out of the church?

"Not only is formality taking possession of the nominal churches, but it is increas-
ing to an alarming extent among those who profess to be keeping the commandments
of God and looking for the soon appearing of Christ in the clouds of heaven. We
should not be narrow in our views and limit our facilities for doing good; yet while we
extend our influence and enlarge our plans as Providence opens the way, we should
be more earnest to avoid the idolatry of the world. While we make greater efforts to
increase our usefulness, we must make corresponding efforts to obtain wisdom from
God to carry on all the branches of the work after His own order, and not from a
worldly standpoint. We should not pattern after the customs of the world, but make
the most of the facilities which God has placed within our reach to get the truth before
the people.
"When as a people our works correspond with our profession, we shall see very
much more accomplished than now. When we have men as devoted as Elijah, and
possessing the faith which he possessed, we shall see that God will reveal Himself to

- 46-
us as He did to holy men of old. When we have men who, while they acknowledge
their deficiencies, will plead with God in earnest faith as did Jacob, we shall see the
same results. Power will come from God to man in answer to the prayer of faith."- Tes-
timonies, vol. 4, pp. 401, 402.

Revival ofPrimitive Godliness D Thursday

December 23

9. What assurance do we have that the presence and power of God will be found
with the faithful remnant to the very end? Acts 3:19; Revelation 18:1-4.

"Notwithstanding the widespread declension of faith and piety, there are true fol-
lowers of Christ in these churches. Before the final visitation of God's judgments upon
the earth there will be among the people of the Lord, such a revival of primitive godli-
ness as has not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spirit and power of God will
be poured out upon His children. At that time many will separate themselves from
those churches in which the love of this world has supplanted love for God and His
word. Many, both o(ministers and people, will gladly accept those great truths which
God has caused to be proclaimed at this time to prepare a people for the Lord's second
coming."- The Great Controversy, p. 464.

10. How will the true people of God move the world and stir the wrath of Satan?
John 13:35; 14:12-17; 17:17,21.

"When those who profess to serve God follow Christ's example, practicing the
principles of the law in their daily life; when every act bears witness that they love
God supremely and their neighbor as themselves, then will the church have power to
move the world." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 340.
"When men are bound together, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they
show the working of an influence that is above every human iQ.fluence. Where this
oneness exists, it is evidence that the image of God is being restored in humanity, that
a new principle of life has been implanted. It shows that there is power in the divine
nature to withstand the supernatural agencies of evil, and that the grace of God sub-
dues the selfishness inherent in the natural heart.
"This love, manifested in the church, will surely stir the wrath of Satan."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 678.
