FOREWORD
The lessons for this quarter-IDENTIFYING THE REMNANT-are
based on the characteristics of the true people of God in these last days.
These people are the faithful remnant who will be prepared to be translated
into the kingdom of glory at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
"From the beginning, faithful souls have constituted the church on
earth. In every age the Lord has had His watchmen, who have borne a
faithful testimony to the generation in which they lived."- The Acts of the Apostles. p.
11.

"In every age, God has called his servants to lift up their voices against
the prevailing errors and sins of the multitude. Noah was called to stand
alone to warn the antediluvian world. Moses and Aaron were alone against
king and princes, magicians and wise men, and the multitudes of Egypt. Eli-
jah was alone when he testified against an apostate king and a backsliding
people. Daniel and his fellows stood alone against the decrees of mighty
monarchs. The majority are usually to be found on the side of error and
falsehood. The fact that doctors of divinity have the world on their side does
not prove them to be on the side of truth and of God'. The wide gate and the
broad road attract the multitudes, while the strait gate and the narrow way
are sought only by the few." - The Spirit of Prophecy. vol. 4, p. 214.
Down through the ages, in the midst of prevailing apostasy, honest souls
who tried to find the ways of God and sought to identify those who walk
therein, have always been led by the Spirit of God and by His holy angels to
the object of their sincere research. And it is no different today. By the
characteristics that God has given in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy,
the faithful remnant that will be prepared for the outpouring of the latter
rain, the finishing of the work, and the second coming of Christ, can be iden-
tified.
As we study these lessons, we should ask ourselves this question every
day, To what extent have these characteristics been developed in us? May the
Lord be merciful to us and help us while the door of probation is still open!

HELP PROVIDE LITERATURE

Light for dark and restricted areas

All should thank the Lord for calling men and women throughout the
world to prepare for the return of His Son, and our Saviour. The divine prov-
idence has enabled the Word of Life to become available in nearly every
language of the world. The words of God are spirit and truth and through
them we may have eternal life, for they testify of the One who paid the
penalty for all.
For His children living in the end of time, He has sent special messages
to help them to cope with the problems peculiar to this time. While it is true
that through the ages the Lord has communicated with His people by means
of messengers and prophets, He has done so again by means of the human
agent. "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto
his servants the prophets" (Amos 3:7).
The remnant of the church has not only received the heritage of the
Testimonies but holds them and keeps them [Rev. 3:12]. Funds are needed to
help our brethren and sisters to have the testimonies in their own languages.
Restrictions hinder the production and/or distribution of this valuable infor-
mation in many countries. To avail ourselves of opportunities to provide for
this need, finance is needed. This is where your help is earnestly solicited.
There is need for more translation work and when the manuscripts are com-
pleted, then there are the publication and distribution costs.
We appreciate the help that has already been received for the progress
of the work to date. Time is running out and we must make the best of every
opportunity that presents itself. Not only pray for the furtherance of this
work but also that souls may be enabled and encouraged to reach the
kingdom as a result.
The silent ministry of the printed page is able to go where the human
minister is unable to go. The printed page is patient, never raises its voice
and always says the same thing, quietly and insistently.

THE PRESENT TRUTH

In compliance with the plan of God, the truth, which was trampled underfoot
during the dark ages, is to be restored in God's due time, and proclaimed to the
world, while it is preparing a people for the second coming of Christ

KEY TEXT: " ... I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these
things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth"
(2 Peter 1:12).

The Truth Cast Down o Sunday

June 28
1. How was the truth handled by the Romish church during the dark ages?
Daniel 8: 12.

"As foretold by prophecy, the papal power cast down the truth to the ground.
The law of God was trampled in the dust, while the traditions and customs of men
were exalted." - The Great Controversy. p. 65.

2. What attitude do the popular churches take toward the truth? 2 Thessalo-
nians 2:9-11. When and in what words will the second angel's message be
repeated? Revelation 18:2.

"The Bible declares that before the coming of the Lord, Satan will work 'with all
power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness;'
and they that 'received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved,' will be left
to receive 'strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.' 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11.
Not until this condition shall be reached, and the union of the church with the world
shall be fully accomplished throughout Christendom, will the fall of Babylon be com-
plete." - The Great Controversy, pp. 389, 390.

The Truth Restored o Monday

June 29
3. How will those who are preparing to be translated into the kingdom honor
the truth? 2 Peter 1:11, 12. How do we know that Peter refers to this last
generation? 2 Peter 3: 11, 12.

4. Which main doctrinal points are to be restored in our days? Revelation

12: 17 (last part). What are these truths designed to be for the remnant?
Hebrews 6:19 (first part).

-5-
"There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is 'present
truth' that the flock needs now....
"But such subjects as the sanctuary, in connection with the 2300 days, the com-
mandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly calculated to explain the past
Advent movement and show what our present position is, establish the faith of the
doubting, and give certainty to the glorious future. These, I have frequently seen,
were the principal subjects on which the messengers should dwell."-Early Writings, p. 63.
"The only safety now is to search for the truth as revealed in the word of God, as
for hid treasure. The subjects of the Sabbath, the nature of man, and the testimony of
Jesus are the great and important truths to be understood; these will prove as an an-
chor to hold God's people in these perilous times."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 300.

The Testimony ofJesus o Tuesday

June 30
5. What is the testimony of Jesus? Revelation 19:10.

6. How will those handle the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus
who are getting ready for the coming of Christ? Deuteronomy 6:6, 7.

"My dear brethren and sisters, let the commandments of God and the testimony
of Jesus Christ be in your minds continually and let them crowd out worldly thoughts
and cares. When you lie down and when you rise up, let them be your meditation.
Live and act wholly in reference to the coming of the Son of Man." -Early Writings, p. 58.

The Threefold Message o Wednesday

July 1
7. Through what message is the work of restoration to be accomplished?
Revelation 14:6-12. Whereby is the true church to be distinguished from
the nominal churches?

"These truths [God's law and the Sabbath], as presented in Revelation 14 in con-
nection with the 'everlasting gospel,' will distinguish the church of Christ at the time
of His appearing."- The Great Controversy, p. 453.
8. What was announced as the result of the proclamation of the threefold
message? Revelation 14:12.

The Faith Once Delivered to the Saints o Thursday

July 2
9. For what do we have to contend in these last days? Jude 3 (second part).
What does the Spirit of Prophecy say about this verse?

"The Sabbath is a sign of the relationship existing between God and His people, a
sign that they are His obedient subjects, that they keep holy His law. The observance
of the Sabbath is the means ordained by God of preserving a knowledge of Himself
and of distinguishing between His loyal subjects and the transgressors of His law.
"This is the faith once delivered to the saints, who stand in moral power before
the world, firmly maintaining this faith." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 198.

10. How will the law of God be treated by the so-called Christian world? 2 Peter
2:2, 3. What did Christ say about the scarcity of true faith in these last days?
Luke 18:8 (second part).

-6-
"Opposition we shall have as we voice the message of the third angel. Satan will
bring in every possible device to make of no effect the faith once delivered to the
saints.... But in spite of opposition, all are to hear the words of truth."- Testimonies,
vol. 8, p. 199.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 3
a. What conditions' will show that the fall of Babylon is complete?
b. Name the most important points of truth restored by the threefold message.
c. What is one of the benefits that we will receive if we make the command-
ments of God and the testimony of Jesus our meditation?
d. What does the threefold message of Revelation 14 announce?
e. What will the opposition instigated by Satan be powerless to do? •

More from the pen of inspiration:

"The truth is to be set forth in the power of the Holy Spirit. This alone
can make our words effective. Only through the Spirit's power will vic-
tory be gained and held. The human agent must be worked by the Spirit
of God. The workers must be kept by the power of God through faith unto
salvation. They must have divine wisdom, that nothing may be uttered
which would stir up men to close our way. Through the inculcation of
spiritual truth we are to prepare a people who shall be able, in meekness
and fear, to give a reason for their faith before the highest authorities in
our world.
"We need to present the truth in its simplicity, to advocate practical
godliness; and we should do this in the spirit of Christ. The manifestation
of such a spirit will have the best influence upon our own souls, and it
will have a convincing power upon others. Give the Lord opportunity to
work through His own agents. Do not imagine that it will be possible for
you to layout plans for the future; let God be acknowledged as standing
at the helm at all times and under every circumstance. He will work by
means that will be suitable, and will maintain, increase, and build up
His own people. "-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 396.
"To present these truths is the work of the third angel's message. The
Lord designs that the presentation of this message shall be the highest,
greatest work carried on in our world at this time. That this work may be
carried forward on correct lines He has directed the establishment of
schools, sanitariums, publishing houses, and other institutions. In these in-
stitutions the attributes of are to be unfolded, and the glory and excellence
of the truth is to be made to appear more vivid."- Medical Ministry, p. 188.

A WORK OF RESTORATION

Through the remnant people of God, the truth was and is being brought out and
restored, link after link, in a connected chain, in fulfillment of prophecies per-
taining to our time

KEY TEXT: " ... Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things" (Matthew 17:
11). .

Times of Restoration D Sunday

July 5
1. What do we read in the New Testament about the prophesied work of
restoration? Matthew 17:11; Acts 3:20, 21.

2. Who is the Lawgiver and through whom did His law come to us? James 4:12;
Acts 7:37, 38; John 1:17. What does the Lord say through Malachi about the
work of restoration to be carried on in our days? Malachi 4:4-6.

"In this time of well-nigh universal apostasy, God calls upon His messengers to
proclaim His law in the spirit and power of Elias."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 4, p. 1184.

The Law of God D Monday

July 6
3. By what sign can we be identified as true disciples? Deuteronomy 6:1, 8;
11:1, 18.

"Now is the time for the law of God to be in our minds, foreheads, and written in
our hearts." -Early Writings. p. 58.
" ... If our hearts are renewed in the likeness of God, if the divine love is im-
planted in the soul, will not the law of God be carried out in the life? When the princi-
ple of love is implanted in the heart, when man is renewed after the image of Him that
created him, the new-covenant promise is fulfilled, 'I will put My laws into their
hearts, and in their minds will I write them.' Hebrews 10:16. And if the law is written
in the heart, will it not shape the life? Obedience-the service and allegiance of
love-is the true sign of discipleship." -Steps to Christ, p. 60.

4. How was the seal removed from the law of God? What work are the disciples
of Jesus to do in our days? Isaiah 8:16.

" ... The seal of God's law is found in the fourth commandment. This only, of all
the ten, brings to view both the name and the title of the Lawgiver. It declares Him to
be the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and thus shows His claim to reverence
and worship above all others. Aside from this precept, there is nothing in the

-8-
Decalogue to show by whose authority the law is given. When the Sabbath was
changed by the papal power, the seal was taken from the law. The disciples of Jesus
are called upon to restore it, by exalting the Sabbath of the fourth commandment to
its rightful position as the Creator's memorial and the sign of His authority."- The Great
Controversy. p. 452.

The Sabbath o Tuesday

July 7
5. What is the prophecy of Isaiah foretelling the Sabbath reform to be ac-
complished in the last days? Isaiah 56: 1,2,6. Whereby do we know that this
prophecy belongs to the Christian era? Compare Isaiah 56: 1 with Romans
3:21 (first part) and 1 Peter 1:5, 10.

6. What other evidence do we have that the prophecy of Isaiah 56 belongs to

the Gospel dispensation? Compare Isaiah 56:8 with John 10:16 and Ephe-
sians 1:10, 11.

"These words [Isaiah 56:1, 2, 6, 7] apply in the Christian age, as shown by the
context: 'The Lord God which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather
others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.' Verse 8. Here is foreshad-
owed the gathering in of the Gentiles by the gospel. And upon those who then honor
the Sabbath, a blessing is pronounced. Thus the obligation of the fourth command-
ment extends past the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, to the time
when His servants should preach to all nations the message of glad tidings." - The Great
Controversy. p. 451.

The Sabbath (continued) o Wednesday

July 8
7. What other prophecy of Isaiah also refers to the restoration of the Sabbath
observance in our days? Isaiah 58:12, 13.

"This prophecy [Isa. 58:12-14] also applies in our time. The breach was made in
the law ofGod when the Sabbath was changed by the Roman power. But the time has
come for that divine institution to be restored." - The Great Controversy. p. 453.

8. How do we know that the prophecy of Isaiah 58 points to the work of

Christ's followers? Compare Isaiah 61:1-4 with Isaiah 58:12.

Seal a/God o Thursday

July 9
9. What is the special sign of distinction between God and His people? Ezekiel
20:20.

"Those who would have the seal of God in their foreheads must keep the Sabbath
of the fourth commandment. This is what distinguishes them from the disloyal, who
have accepted a man-made institution in the place of the true Sabbath. The observ-
ance of God's rest day is the mark of distinction between him that serveth God and
him that serveth Him not." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments]. vol. 7. p. 970.

10. How many are to be sealed with the seal of God under the threefold message?
Revelation 7:4. What blessed hope was shared by Sister White and the
pioneers?

-9-
"Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be among the hundred
and forty-four thousand." - The SDA Bible Cmll1llelllary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 970.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 10
a. What, and in whose power, are we to proclaim to the world?
b, What promise is fulfilled in every person that is renewed after the image of
God?
c. What blessing is pronounced upon those who honor the Sabbath in the Chris-
tian dispensation?
d. What do we know about the breach mentioned in Isaiah 58: 12?
e. Of what is Sabbathkeeping a sign?

'* * '* * '*

More from the pen of inspiration:
"The work of restoration and reform carried on by the returned ex-
iles, under the leadership of Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah, presents
a picture of a work of spiritual restoration that is to be wrought in the
closing days of this earth's history. The remnant of Israel were a feeble
people, exposed to the ravages of their enemies; but through them God
purposed to preserve in the earth a knowledge of Himself and of His
law. They were the guardians of the true worship, the keepers of the holy
oracles." -Prophets and Kings, p. 677.
"The prophet here describes a people who, in a time of general de-
parture from truth and righteousness, are seeking to restore the princi-
ples that are the foundation of the kingdom of God. They are repairers
of a breach that has been made in God's law-the wall that He has
placed around His chosen ones for their protection, and obedience to
whose precepts of justice, truth, and purity is to be their perpetual
safeguard."-Ibid., pp. 677, 678.
"In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The
breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is
to be repaired. God's remnant people, standing before the world as re-
formers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring
reform and that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is to stand as a
memorial of creation, a constant reminder of the power of God. In clear,
distinct lines they are to present the necessity of obedience to all the
precepts of the Decalogue. Constrained by the love of Christ, they are to
co-operate with Him in building up the waste places. They are to be
repairers of the breach, restorers of paths to dwell in."-Ibid.

Lesson 3 Sabbath, July 18, 1981

IN THE SANCTUARY

The remnant people of God follow Christ, by faith, into the most holy place of the
heavenly sanctuary, while they carefully review their lives, comparing their
characters with the great standard of righteousness

KEY TEXT: "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in
his temple the ark of his testament: ... " (Revelation 11:19).

The Heavenly Sanctuary o Sunday

July 12
1. What was opened in heaven, in 1844? Revelation 11:19. In what sense was
this subject also opened to the understanding of the true believers after the
disappointment in 1844?

" ... The announcement that the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the
ark of His testament was seen, points to the opening of the most holy place of the
heavenly sanctuary, in 1844, as Christ entered there to perform the closing work of
the atonement. Those who by faith followed their great High Priest, as He entered
upon His ministry in the most holy place, beheld the ark of His testament. As they
had studied the subject of the sanctuary, they had come to understand the Saviour's
change of ministration, and they saw that He was now officiating before the ark of
God, pleading His blood in behalf of sinners."- The Great Controversy, p. 433.

2. What is the relationship between the heavenly sanctuary and the earthly
sanctuary? Hebrews 8:1-5.

"The tabernacle, or temple, of God on earth was a pattern of the original in

heaven. All the ceremonies of the Jewish law were prophetic, typical of mysteries in
the plan of redemption."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1095.

The Investigative Judgment o Monday

July 13
3. Which scriptures refer to the change in the ministration of Christ in 1844?
Daniel 8:14; 7:13; Malachi 3:1; Matthew 25:1-13.

"The coming of Christ as our high priest to the most holy place, for the cleansing
of the sanctuary, brought to view in Daniel 8:14; the coming of the Son of man to the
Ancient of days, as presented in Daniel 7:13; and the coming of the Lord to His tem-

-11-
pIe, foretold by Malachi, are descriptions of the same event; and this is also
represented by the coming of the bridegroom to the marriage, described by Christ in
the parable of the ten virgins, of Matthew 25." - The Great Controversy, p. 426.

4. What takes place in heaven before the reception of the kingdom by Christ?
Matthew 22:10-13.

" ... Previous to the wedding the king comes in to see the guests, to see if all are
attired in the wedding garment, the spotless robe of character washed and made
white in the blood of the Lamb. Matthew 22:11; Revelation 7:14. He who is found
wanting is cast out, but all who upon examination are seen to have the wedding gar-
ment on, are accepted of God, and accounted worthy of a share in His kingdom and a
seat upon His throne. This work of examination of character, of determining who are
prepared for the kingdom of God, is that of the investigative judgment, the closing
work in the sanctuary above."- The Great Controversy, p. 428.

In the Most Holy Place o Tuesday

July 14
5. Where have the people of God been worshiping since 1844? Revelation 3:8.

"But clearer light came with the investigation of the sanctuary question. They
now saw that they were correct in believing that the end of the 2300 days in 1844
marked an important crisis. But while it was true that that door of hope and mercy by
which men had for eighteen hundred years found access to God, was closed, another
door was opened, and forgiveness of sins was offered to men through the intercession
of Christ in the most holy. One part of His ministration had closed, only to give place
to another. There was still an 'open door' to the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ
was ministering in the sinner's behalf." - The Great Controversy, pp. 429, 430.

6. In what sense are the members of the nominal churches outside the most ho-
ly place? Revelation 11:2.

"It is those who by faith follow Jesus in the great work of the atonement who
receive the benefits of His mediation in their behalf, while those who reject the light
which brings to view this work of ministration are not benefited thereby. "-The Great
Controversy, p. 430.

Our Present Experience o Wednesday

July 15
7. Of what was the Jewish tabernacle a type? What does God want His church
to be? Ephesians 2:19-22; 1 Peter 2:5.

"The Jewish tabernacle was a type of the Christian church.... The church on
earth, composed of those who are faithful and loyal to God, is the 'true tabernacle,'
whereof the Redeemer is the minister. God, and not man, pitched this tabernacle on a
high, elevated platform." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White 'Commentsj, vol. 7, p. 931.
"If the church on earth is to resemble a temple, let it be built according to the pat-
tern shown in heaven, and not according to man's genius. The invention of man often
counteracts the working out of God's plans. The golden measuring rod has not been
placed in the hands of any finite man or any class of men, whatever their position or
calling, but is in the hand of the heavenly Architect." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 209.

-12 -
"His [the Lord's] church is to be a temple built after the divine similitude, and the
angelic architect has brought his golden measuring rod from heaven, that every stone
may be hewed and squared by the divine measurement and polished to shine as an
emblem of heaven, radiating in all directions the bright, clear beams of the Sun of
Righteousness.... " -Ibid.• p. 17.

8. Through what experience are we going now? Revelation 11:1.

"The grand judgment is taking place, and has been going on for some time. Now
the Lord says, Measure the temple and the worshipers thereof. Remember when you
are walking the streets about your business, God is measuring you; when you are at-
tending your household duties, when you engage in conversation, God is measuring
you. Remember that your words and actions are being daguerreotyped [photograph-
ed] in the books of heaven, as the face is reproduced by the artist on the polished
plate....
"Here is the work going on, measuring the temple and its worshipers to see who
will stand in the last day." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 972.

God's Standard o Thursday

July 16
9. What is the measuring rod in the hands of God? Romans 2:12 (second part);
James 2:12.

"The law of God is as sacred as His throne, and by it every man who cometh into
the world is to be judged. There is no other standard by which to test character."- The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 911.
"Every man's work passes in review before God and is registered for faithfulness
or unfaithfulness. Opposite each name in the books of heaven is entered with terrible
exactness every wrong word, every selfish act, every unfulfilled duty, and every
secret sin, with every artful dissembling. Heaven-sent warnings or reproofs neglected,
wasted moments, unimproved opportunities, the influence exerted for good or for evil,
with its far-reaching results, all are chronicled by the recording angel." - The Great Con-
troversy, p. 482.

10. What degree of character development must be reached by those who are
preparing for the kingdom of God? Ephesians 4:13.

"Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His
church. When the character of Christ shalI be perfectly reproduced in His people,
then He will come to claim them as His own." -Ch"ist's Object Lessons. p. 69.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 17
a. For what work was the most holy place opened in 1844?
b. What was the coming of Christ in 1844?
c. What is said of those who do not follow Christ in the great work of atone-
ment, in the most holy place?
d. In what words is the investigative judgment described in Revelation Il:l?
e. Which is the only standard used in the judgment to test our characters? •

THE MARK OF CHARACTER

The remnant people of God are in this world so that they may know God and
become like Him in character, and that, by a consistent Christian life, they may
reveal His character to the world

KEY TEXT: "And I looked, and, 10, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him
an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written
in their foreheads" (Revelation 14:1).

The Name of God o Sunday

July 19
1. What do the 144,000 have in their foreheads? Revelation 14:1. What does
this represent?

"[Rev. 14:1-4 quoted.] This scripture represents the character of the people of
God for these last days."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol.-7, pp. 977, 978.
"This name [God's] is the symbol which the apostle saw in vision, and signifies
the yielding of the mind to intelligent and loyal obedience to all of God's command-
ments." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 370.

2. What do we know about their passport to the holy city? Revelation 3:12;
22:14.

" ... The indelible mark of God is upon them [the sealed ones]. God can plead that
His own name is written there. The Lord has shut them in. Their destination is in-
scribed-'GOD, NEW JERUSALEM.' They are God's property, His possession.
"Will this seal be put upon the impure in mind, the fornicator, the adulterer, the
man who covets his neighbor's wife? Let your souls answer the question, Does my
character correspond to the qualifications essential that I may receive a passport to
the mansions Christ has prepared for those who are fitted for them? Holiness must be
inwrought in our character." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 446.

The Significance of God's Name o Monday

July 20
3. When Moses wished to see the glory of God, what was revealed to him in
God's name? Exodus 33:18, 19; 34:5-7.

"The goodness, mercy, and love of God were proclaimed by Christ to Moses.
This was God's character." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 362.
" ... Pray with Moses, 'Show me Thy glory.' What is this glory?-The character
of God. This is what He proclaimed to Moses."-Gospel Workers, p. 417.

4. By which name are all true Christians called? Jeremiah 14:9; 23:6. What are
we told not to do concerning this name? James 2:7.

The Work a/the Holy Spirit o Tuesday

July 21
'5. Through what Agent does the Lord write His name (or character) in our
minds and hearts? Jeremiah 31:33; 2 Corinthians 3:3. What term does the
Bible use for this experience? Ephesians 4:30.

6. When a person has been sealed by the Holy Spirit, what evidences will prove
it? Ezekiel 36:26, 27; John 16:13 (first part); Galatians 5:22, 23.

"The mighty power of the Holy Spirit works an entire transformation in the
• character of the human agent, making him a new creature in Christ Jesus. When a
man is filled with the Spirit, the more severely he is tested and tried, the more clearly
he proves that he is a representative of Christ. The peace that dwells in the soul is
seen on the countenance. The words and actions express the love of the Saviour.
There is no striving for the highest place. Self is renounced. The name of Jesus is
written on all that is said and done." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6,
p.1117.

Our Great Responsibility o Wednesday

July 22
7. What is our great responsibility in connection with the name of God? Mat-
thew 6:9; John 17:6,26.

" ... God has acknowledged you before men and angels as His child; pray that
you may do no dishonor to the 'worthy name by which ye are called.' James 2:7. God
sends you into the world as His representative. In every act of life you are to make
manifest the name of God. This petition calls upon you to possess His character. You
cannot hallow His name, you cannot represent Him to the world, unless in life and
character you represent the very life and character of God. This you can do only
through the acceptance of the grace and righteousness of Christ."- Thoughts Froll! the
Mount 0/ Blessing, p. 107.

8. If we are built upon the only sure foundation (Ephesians 2:20; 1 Corinthians
3:10,11), and bear the name or seal by which God will acknowledge us, what
will be far from us? 2 Timothy 2:19. How has this warning been overlooked
by many? Romans 2:24.

"How sad and fearful the mistakes that many are making? They are building on
the sand, but flatter themselves that they are riveted to the eternal Rock. Many who
profess godliness are rushing on as recklessly, and are as insensible of their danger,
as though there were no future judgment. A fearful retribution awaits them, and yet
they are controlled by impulse and gross passion; they are filling out a dark life record
for the judgment. I lift my voice of warning to all who name the name of Christ to
depart from all iniquity. Purify your souls by obeying the truth. Cleanse yourselves
from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God... ."
- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 475.

A Warning to Us o Thursday
July 23
9. What deception has come upon the popular churches that do not qualify to
use the name of Christ? Jeremiah 29:9. What shows that they are deceived?
Matthew 7:22.

10. What do they overlook? Matthew 7:21, 23.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 24
a. What does the name of God (Revelation 14:1) represent?
b. What is the relationship between God's glory, name and character?
c. When a person surrenders entirely to the control of the Holy Spirit, where
will the name of God be? ..
d. When we pray to God, "Hallowed be Thy name," what is actually meant by
this petition?
e. According to Matthew 7:21-23, on what condition are we to call upon the
name of the Lord? •

More from the pen of inspiration:

"Christ has given us no assurance that to attain perfection of charac-

ter is an easy matter. A noble all-round character is not inherited. It does
not come to us by accident. A noble character is earned by individual ef-
fort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the
powers of the mind; we form the character. It is formed by hard, stern
battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged against hered-
itary tendencies. We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow
not one unfavorable trait to remain uncorrected.
"Let no one say, I cannot remedy my defects of character. If you
come to this decision, you will certainly fail of obtaining everlasting
life. The impossibility lies in your own will. If you will not, then you can-
not overcome. The real difficulty arises from the corruption of an unsanc-
tified heart, and an unwillingness to submit to the control of God."-Mes-
sages ta Young People, p. 99.
"Stand like Daniel, that faithful statesman, a man whom no tempta-
tion could corrupt. Do not disappoint Him who so loved you that He gave
His own life to cancel your sins. He says, 'Without Me ye can do
nothing.' Remember this. If you have made mistakes, you certainly gain
a victory if you see these mistakes, and regard them as beacons of warn-
ing. Thus you turn defeat into victory, disappointing the enemy, and
honoring your Redeemer. "-Ibid., p. 100.

REPENTANCE AND CONVERSION

The remnant people of God must have a genuine experience in repentance and
conversion, so that their sins may be blotted out in the investigative judgment.
Those who reach this condition will be fitted for the latter rain and for the
finishing of the work

• KEY TEXT: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted
out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the
Lord" (Acts 3:19).

Our Urgent Need o Sunday

July 26
1. What must be our experience before our sins can be blotted out in the in-
vestigative judgment? Acts 3: 19 (first part). How does the Spirit of Prophecy
point to this need?

"God calls for a revival and a reformation." -Prophets and Kings, p. 626.

2. In what words is this need pointed out in the letter to Laodicea? Revelation
3:19. Show the relationship between repentance, reformation and the white
garment (Christ's righteousness).

"No repentance is genuine that does notwork reformation. The righteousness of

Christ is not a cloak to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; it is a principle of life
that transforms the character and controls the conduct. Holiness is wholeness for
God; it is the entire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the principles of
heaven."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 555, 556.

Repentance o Monday
July 27
3. What is genuine repentance? Give examples. 2 Chronicles 15:15; Ezra
10:1-3; Acts 2:37,38.

"Repentance is the first step that must be taken by all who return to God. No one
can do this work for another. We must individually humble our souls before God and
put away our idols. When we have done all that we can do, the Lord will manifest to
us His salvation." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 590.
"True repentance is more than sorrow for sin. It is a resolute turning away from
evil." -Ibid., p. 557.
"Repentance is turning from self to Christ; and when we receive Christ so that
through faith He can live His life in us, good works will be manifest." - Thoughts From the
Mount of Blessing, p. 87.

-17 -
4. What are the fruits of genuine repentance? Ezekiel 18:27-31; 33:14, 15;
Luke 3:8-14. What warning is applicable to many of us today?

"John exhorted these men [Pharisees and Sadducees] to 'bring forth therefore
fruits meet for repentance.' That is, Show that you are converted, that your
characters are transformed.... Neither words nor profession, but fruits-the forsak-
ing of sins, and obedience to the commandments of God-show the reality of genuine
repentance and true conversion." - The SDA Bible Comrnentmy [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p.
IOn
"Your repentance has never gone deep enough to perfect a thorough reformation.
You have had a surface work, but not that entire transformation which is necessary in
order to bring you into acceptance with God."- Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 189, 190.

Conversion o Tuesday
July 28
5. What is genuine conversion? John 3:3,5; 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Corinthians 5:17.
What parable speaks about true conversion? Matthew 13:33.

"True conversion is a radical change." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 17.

"The leaven hidden in the flour works invisibly to bring the whole mass under its
leavening process; so the leaven of truth works secretly, silently, steadily, to
transform the soul. The natural inclinations are softened and subdued. New thoughts,
new feelings, new motives, are implanted. A new standard of character is set up-the
life of Christ. The mind is changed; the faculties are roused to action in new lines.
Man is not endowed with new faculties, but the faculties he has are sanctified. The
conscience is awakened. Weare endowed with traits of character that enable us to do
service for God." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 98, 99.
"No conversion is genuine which does not change both the character and the con-
duct of those who accept the truth."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5,
p. 1144.

6. How do 'we know that biblical conversion is a process and not an instan-
taneous experience? 1 Corinthians 15:31; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Philippians
3:12-14.

" ... None are living Christians unless they have a daily experience in the things
of God and daily practice self-denial, cheerfully bearing the cross and following
Christ. Every living Christian will advance daily in the divine life. As he advances
toward perfection, he experiences a conversion to God every day; and this conversion
is not completed until he attains to perfection of Christian character, a full preparation
for the finishing touch of immortality."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 505.

Revival o Wednesday
July 29
7. Under what other names does the Word of God emphasize our great need?
Hosea 6:2, 3; Titus 3:5. How can we secure a revival?

"A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our
needs."- The Review and Herald, March 22, 1887.
" ... If the lay members of the church will arouse to do the work that they can do,
going a warfare at their own charges, each seeing how much he can accomplish in
winning souls to Jesus, we shall see many leaving the ranks of Satan to stand under

-18 -
the banner of Christ. If our people will act upon the light that is given in these few
words of instruction, showing that they sincerely believe the truth which they pro-
fess, we shall surely see of the salvation of God. Wonderful revivals will follow. Sin-
ners will be converted, and many souls will be added to the church. When we bring
our hearts into unity with Christ, and our lives into harmony with His work, the Spirit
that fell on the disciples on the day of Pentecost will fall on us." -Ibid., June 30, 1903.

8. How does the truth change a person? 1 Peter 1:22.

"You need to be converted, transformed by the renewing of your mind. When the
truth takes hold of your heart, it will work a reformation in the life." - Testimonies, vol. 2,
p.678.
" ... There are some whom the truth finds coarse, rough, odd, boastful, who take
advantage of their neighbors if they can, in order to benefit themselves; they err in
many ways, yet when the truth is believed by them from the heart, it will work an en-
tire change in their lives. They will immediately commence the work of reformation.
The pure influence of truth will elevate the whole man. In his business deal with his
fellow men he will have the fear of God before him, and will love his neighbor as
himself, and will deal just as he would wish to be dealt by. His conversation will be
truthful, chaste, and of so elevating a character that unbelievers cannot take advan-
tage of it, or say evil of him justly, and are not disgusted with his uncourteous ways
and unbecoming speech. He will carry the sanctifying influence of the truth into his
family and let his light so shine before them that they by seeing his good works may
glorify God. He will in all the walks of life exemplify the life of Christ. "-Ibid., vol. 1, pp.
415, 416.

Reformation o Thursday
July 30
9. Where should the work of revival and reformation begin? What actions will
show that a revival and reformation is under way? Give an example. Genesis
35:2,5.

" ... There is need, not merely of a revival, but of a reformation. Every church
needs to be stirred as never before. When the great light that God has given shines
forth through human agencies, a great work will be done. In demonstration of the
Spirit, and with power, the truth will be revealed in clear, distinct lines. But this work
must begin in the home.
"As the right work is done in the home, parents will find their hearts subdued and
melted. Strange prejudices that have been cherished by brethren and sisters in the
church, prejudices that have borne evil fruit, will be overcome, and will disappear. A
spirit of candor will come in, a spirit after Christ's likeness. God's people will give up
the tenacious desire to have their own way and to urge their own ideas; for they will
realize that they are in the presence of God's Son.
"I beseech the parents in our churches to make a solemn covenant with God by
repentance and confession. Confess your past neglect, and in the fear of God take up
the work of educating your children in righteousness." - The Review and Herald, July 15,
1902.

10. In view of the time limit for the work of preparation, what call is directed to
us? Isaiah 55:6,7. What will happen to those who do not have this victorious
experience before the latter rain is poured out? Jeremiah 8:20; Revelation
22: 11 (first part).

-19 -
"Those who delay a preparation for the day of God cannot obtain it in the time of
trouble, or at any subsequent time. The case of all such is hopeless." - Till' Great Contro-
/,ers.\'. p. 620.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 31
a. What will the righteousness of Christ never cover?
b. What is the evidence of true repentance?
c. Describe the blessed experience of a person who knows what true conver-
sion is.
d. Describe a genuine revival.
e. Describe a ~enuine reformation.

More from the pen of inspiration:

"Wherever the word of God has been faithfully preached, results

have followed that attested its divine origin. The Spirit of God accompa-
nied the message of His servants, and the word was with power. Sinners
felt their consciences quickened. The 'light which lighteth every man that
cometh into the world' illumined the secret chambers of their souls, and
the hidden things of darkness were made manifest. Deep conviction took
hold upon their minds and hearts. They were convinced of sin and of
righteousness and of judgment to come. They had a sense of the righ-
teousness of Jehovah and felt the terror of appearing, in their guilt and
uncleanness, before the Searcher of hearts. In anguish they cried out:
'Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?' As the cross of Cal-
vary, with its infinite sacrifice for the sins of men, was revealed, they saw
that nothing but the merits of Christ could suffice to atone for their trans-
gressions; this alone could reconcile man to God. With faith and humil-
ity they accepted the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.
Through the blood of Jesus they had 'remission of sins that are past.'
"These souls brought forth fruit meet for repentance. They believed
and were baptized, and rose to walk in newness of life-new creatures in
Christ Jesus; not to fashion themselves according to the former lusts, but
by the faith of the Son of God to follow in His steps, to reflect His charac-
ter, and to purify themselves even as He is pure. The things they once
hated they now loved, and the things they once loved they hated. The
proud and self-assertive became meek and lowly of heart. The vain and
supercilious became serious and unobtrusive. The profane became rev-
erent, the drunken sober, and the profligate pure. The vain fashions of
the world were laid aside. Christians sought not the 'outward adorning
of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
but ... the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible,
even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God
of great price'. 1 Peter 3:3, 4. "-The Great Controversy, pp. 461, 462.

GOLD TRIED IN THE FIRE

The life and character of the remnant people of God are to stand out in this world
as gold tried in the fire. The difference between a genuine Christian and a pro-
fessed Christian is like the difference between gold and dross

o
KEY TEXT: "I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be
rich; ... " (Revelation 3:18).

Essential Building Material o Sunday

August 2
1. What does Christ offer us in the first place, in His letter to Laodicea? Revela-
tion 3:18 (first part). What condition is the underlying cause of this offer?
Revelation 3:17.

2. For what purpose do we need gold (in its spiritual application)? 1 Corinthians
3:11,12.

"In our character building we must build on Christ. He is the sure foundation-a
foundation which can never be moved. The tempest of temptation and trial cannot
move the building which is riveted to the Eternal Rock.
"He who would grow into a beautiful building for the Lord must cultivate every
power of the being. It is only by the right use of the talents that the character can
develop harmoniously. Thus we bring to the foundation that which is represented in
the Word as gold, silver, precious stones-material that will stand the test of God's
purifying fires." -The Youth's Instructor. May 16.1901.

Faith o Monday
August 3
3. What does the "gold tried in the fire" represent? Galatians 5:6 (last part); 1
Peter 1:7.

"The gold tried in the fire is faith that works by love. Only this can bring us into
harmony with God. We may be active, we may do much work; but without love, such
love as dwelt in the heart of Christ, we can never be numbered with the family of
heaven." -Christ's Object Lessons. p. 158.

4. How does the word of God describe the success of a home in which faith and
love are cultivated in the fear of the Lord? Psalm 128:1,2.

" ... The faith that works by love and purifies the soul stands at the helm,
presiding over the whole household. Under the hallowed influence of such a home,

- 21-
the principle of brotherhood laid down in the Word of God is more widely recognized
and obeyed." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 258.
"The home in which the members are polite, courteous Christians exerts a far-
reaching influence for good. Other families will mark the results attained by such a
home, and will follow the example set, in their turn guarding the home against satanic
influences." -Ibid.

Bible Principle 0 Tuesday

August 4
5. What else does the heavenly gold symbolize? Matthew 13:44; 2 Timothy
3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12.

"There is necessity for every family to make the Bible the book of their study.
Christ's sayings are pure gold, without one particle of dross, unless men, with their
human understanding, shall try to put it there, and make falsehood appear as a por- -
tion of truth." -Fundamentals of Christian Education. p. 386.
"Let every student who values the heavenly treasure put to the stretch his mental
and spiritual powers, and sink the shaft deep into the mine of truth, that he may ob-
tain the celestial gold,-that wisdom which will make him wise unto salvation." -Ibid.,
pp. 169. 170.

6. When a person actually possesses the heavenly gold, how will he reveal it?
Give examples. Job 1:1; Luke 1:6.

"The Bible is the great standard of right and wrong, clearly defining sin and
holiness. Its living principles, running through our lives like threads of gold, are our
only safeguard in trial and temptation." -COlt1lsels to Parents. Teachers. and Students. p. 422.
" ... When a man is indeed connected with God, and is keeping His law in truth,
his life will reveal the fact; for all his actions will be in harmony with the teachings of
Christ. He will not sell his honor for gain. His principles are built upon the sure foun-
dation, and his conduct in worldly matters is a transcript of his principles. Firm in-
tegrity shines forth as gold amid the dross and rubbish of the world."- Testimonies. vol. 4.
p.310.

Dimness and Brilliancy o Wednesday

August 5
7. What was the condition of the SDA Church in her early days? What change
has gradually come in? What symbol does the Word of God use for such a
change? Lamentations 4:1, 2.

" ... We were indeed a peculiar people. We were few in numbers, without
wealth, without worldly wisdom or worldly honors; and yet we believed God and were
strong and successful, a terror to evildoers. Our love for one another was steadfast; it
was not easily shaken. Then the power of God was manifested among us, the sick
were healed, and there was much calm, sweet, holy joy. But while light has continued
to increase, the church has not advanced proportionately. The fine gold has gradually
become dim, and deadness and formality have come in to cripple the energies of the
church " - Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 534.
" Weare in danger of living like the Jews-destituteof the love of God and ig-
norant of His power, while the blazing light of truth is shining all around us.
"Ten thousand times ten thousand may profess to. obey the law and the gospel,
and yet be living in transgression. Men may present in a clear manner the claims of

-22 -
truth upon others and yet their own hearts be carnal. Sin may be loved and practiced
in secret. The truth of God may be no truth to them, because their hearts have not
been sanctified by it. The love of the Saviour may exercise no constraining power
over their base passions. We know by the history of the past that men may stand in
sacred positions and yet handle the truth of God deceitfully." -Ibid., pp. 535, 536.

8. What process does the Lord employ to restore the brilliancy of the gold?
Zechariah 13:9; Malachi 3:3; 1 Peter 1:7.

"The assaults of Satan are strong, his delusions are terrible; but the Lord's eye is
upon His people. Their affliction is great, the flames of the furnace seem about to con-
sume them; but Jesus will bring them forth as gold tried in the fire. Their earthliness
must be removed that the image of Christ may be perfectly reflected; unbelief must
, be overcome; faith, hope, and patience are to be developed."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 474.
1
The Gold and the Dross o Thursday
August 6
9. What symbol is used for open apostasy and corruption? Isaiah 1:22; Ezekiel
22:18.

"Those who consider their own interest primary, live for self. Their character in
the sight of God is as worthless dross."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 637.
" ... Firm integrity shines forth as gold amid the dross and rubbish of the world.
Deceit, falsehood, and unfaithfulness may be glossed over and hidden from the eyes
of man, but not from the eyes of God. The angels of God, who watch the development
of character and weigh moral worth, record in the books of heaven these minor trans-
actions which reveal character. If a workman in the daily vocations of life is unfaithful
and slights his work, the world will not judge incorrectly if they estimate his standard
in religion according to his standard in business." -Ibid., vol. 4, pp. 310, 311.

10. By what characteristic can the gold be distinguished from the dross,
especially toward the end of the Laodicean period? Ezekiel 9:4.

"Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the
Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those 'that sigh and that
cry for all the abominations that be done' in the church." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 267.

WHITE RAIMENT

The remnant must have the covering that will enable them to appear in God's
presence. This is the robe of Christ's righteousness, which He will put upon
every repenting, believing soul that surrenders to Him. Those who have Christ
abiding in them through the Holy Spirit, will represent His likeness in their
character

KEY TEXT: "1 counsel thee to buy of me ... white raiment, that thou mayest be
clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; ... "

A Serious Problem D Sunday

August 9
1. What did our first parents realize right after the fall? Genesis 3:10, 11.

2. Under what symbol was the apostasy of the Jewish church denounced?
Ezekiel 23:29; Hosea 2:9, 10.

Self-Righteousness D Monday
August 10
3. What condition does the Lord see among His profess people today? Revela-
tion 3:17 (last part).
l
"What is the shame of this nakedness and poverty? It is the shame of clothing
ourselves with self-righteousness, and of separating ourselves from God, when He
has made ample provision for all to receive His blessing." - The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 965.

4. Through what attitude do the nominal churches try to cover their naked-
ness? Isaiah 4: 1.

"Self-righteousness in not true righteousness, and those who cling to it will be left
to take the consequences of holding a fatal deception." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 279.

Self-Righteousness (continued) D Tuesday

August 11
5. What did our first parents do when they realized that they were naked?
Genesis 3:7. How have sinners been following their example?

"Naked and ashamed, they [our first parents] tried to supply the place of the
heavenly garments by sewing together fig leaves for a covering.

- 24-
"This is what the transgressors of God's law have done ever since the day of
Adam and Eve's disobedience. They have sewed together fig leaves to cover the
nakedness caused by transgression. They have worn the garments of their own devis-
ing, by works of their own they have tried to cover their sins, and make themselves
acceptable with God."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.

6. What is our own righteousness in the eyes of God? Isaiah 64:6 (first part).
What will be the end of all those who do not overcome their defects of
character? Matthew 22:11-13.

Christ's Righteousness o Wednesday

August 12
7. What kind of raiment does Christ offer us and for what purpose? Revelation
3: 18 (second part).

"This robe [the covering of Christ's righteousness], woven in the loom of heaven,
has in it not one thread of human devising." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.

8. What does the white raiment symbolize? Revelation 19:8. How only can it be
made white? Revelation 7:14 (second part).

"The white raiment is the righteousness of Christ that may be wrought into the
character. Purity of heart, purity of motive, will characterize everyone who is
washing his robe, and making it white in the blood ofthe Lamb." - The SDA Bible Connnell-
lary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 965.
"Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this character He
offers to impart to US." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.

Christ's Righteousness (continued) o Thursday

August 13
9. How can the righteousness of Christ become our righteousness? Titus 3:5-7.

"Without the grace of Christ, the sinner is in a hopeless condition; nothing can be
done for him; but through divine grace, supernatural power is imparted to the man,
and works in mind and heart and character. It is through the impartation of the grace
of Christ that sin is discerned in its hateful nature, and finally driven from the soul
temple. It is through grace that we are brought into fellowship with Christ, to be
associated with Him in the work of salvation. Faith is the condition upon which God
has seen fit to promise pardon to sinners; not that there is any virtue in faith whereby
salvation is merited, but because faith can lay hold of the merits of Christ, the remedy
provided for sin. Faith can present Christ's perfect obedience instead of the sinner's
transgression and defection. When the sinner believes that Christ is his personal
Saviour, then, according to His unfailing promises, God pardons his sin, and justifies
him freely. The repentant soul realizes that his justification comes because Christ, as
his substitute and surety, has died for him, is his atonement and righteousness." -Selected
Messages, book 1, pp. 366, 367.

10. What must we do so that, in the investigative judgment, we will be found

clothed with the garment of Christ's righteousness? Galatians 2:20.

" ... When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart, the
will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are

- 25-
brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be clothed
with the garment of His righteousness. Then as the Lord looks upon us He sees, not
the fig-leaf garment, not the nakedness and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righ-
teousness, which is perfect obedience to the law of Jehovah." -Christs Object Lessons, p. 312.
"He who becomes a partaker of the divine nature will be in harmony with God's
great standard of righteousness, His holy law. This is the rule by which God
measures the actions of men. This will be the test of character in the judgment."-

Recapitulation D Friday
August 14
a. What is nakedness in a spiritual sense? I
b. How much can the robe of our self-righteousness do to cover our spiritual
nakedness in the sight of God?
c. In what sense are professed Christians repeating the experience of our first
parents (Gen. 3:7)?
d. How, only, can we be clothed in white raiment?
e. What is the robe of Christ's righteousness?

More from the pen of inspiration:

"To be without the graces of the Spirit of God is sad indeed; but it is a
more terrible condition to be thus destitute of spirituality and of Christ,
and yet try to justify ourselves by telling those who are alarmed for
us that we need not their fears and pity. Fearful is the power of self-
deception on the human mind! What blindness! setting light for
darkness and darkness for light! The True Witness counsels us to buy of
Him gold tried in the fire, white raiment, and eyesalve. The gold here
recommended as having been tried in the fire is faith and love. It makes
the heart rich; for it has been purged until it is pure, and the more it is
tested the more brilliant is its luster. The white raiment is purity of
character, the righteousness of Christ imparted to the sinner. This is in-
deed a garment of heavenly texture, that can be bought only of Christ
for a life of willing obedience. The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace
which enables us to discern between the evil and the good, and to
detect sin under any guise. God has given His church eyes which He re-
quires them to anoint with wisdom, that they may see clearly; but many
would put out the eyes of the church if they could; for they would not
have their deeds come to the light, lest they should be reproved. The
divine eyesalve will impart clearness to the understanding. Christ is the
depositary of all graces. He says: 'Buy of Me.' "-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 88, 89.

EYESALVE

While Satan is seeking to becloud the discernment of the people of God, the rem-
nant will be able to distinguish between truth and error, discern the will of God,
detect sin under any guise, see and shun Satan's wiles

KEY TEXT: "I counsel thee to ... anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou
mayest see" (Revelation 3:18).

Spiritual Blindness o Sunday

August 16
1. What was the condition of the Jewish leadership and people in the days of
Christ? Matthew 13: 13. What will happen if the blind lead the blind? Mat-
thew 15:14.

2. What likeness can be seen between ancient and modern Israel? Revelation
3:17 (last part).

"Spiritual discernment to see sin as it exists, and then to put it out of the camp, is
decreasing among God's people; and spiritual blindness is fast coming upon
them." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 324.

Self-Destruction o Monday
August 17
3. Who is the author of this specific blindness? 2 Corinthians 4:3, 4. When
blinded, what discernment does a person lose?

"A knowledge of the state of the backslider from God seems to be hidden from
him." - Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 450, 45l.
"As it was in the days of Christ, so it is now; the Pharisees do not know their
spiritual destitution,"- The Desire of Ages, p. 280.
"The deadly lethargy of the world is paralyzing your senses. Sin no longer ap-
pears repulsive because you are blinded by Satan."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 233.

4. How are souls blinded by Satan? John 3:19, 20.

"All should be intelligent in regard to the agency by which the soul is destroyed.
It is not because of any decree that God has sent out against man. He does not make
man spiritually blind. God gives sufficient light and evidence to enable man to
distinguish truth from error. But He does not force rnan to receive truth. He leaves
him free to choose the good or to choose the evil. If man resists evidence that is suffi-

- 27-
cient to guide his judgment in the right direction, and chooses evil once, he will do
this more readily the second time. The third time he will still more eagerly withdraw
himself from God and choose to stand on the side of Satan. And in this course he will
continue until he is confirmed in evil, and believes the lie he has cherished as truth.
His resistance has produced its harvest."- The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 6, p. 1112.

Light vs. Darkness D Tuesday

August 18
5. Instead of accepting the heavenly eyesalve, how do many try, in vain, to
remedy their blindness? Isaiah 50: 11. What did Christ say of those who walk
by their own light? Matthew 6:22, 23.

"Those who are in this condition are willfully ignorant. They do not discern the
real character of sin. By their wrongdoing they constantly misrepresent the character
of Christ and put Him to open shame. Professing to have a knowledge of the truth,
they act in spirit as novices. They do not seem to understand the truth that must be
expressed in word and deed to show a decided difference between him that serveth
God and him that serveth Him not. They are false claimants of every Christian bless-
ing and privilege, when, as Christ's representatives, they are not rich in spiritual
grace or in good works. They are wretched, poor, blind, maimed. What a position to
be in! They stand in their own light." - The SDA Bible Commentmy [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7,
p.963.

6. How do many believers mistake light for darkness? Isaiah 5:20, 21. Give an
example. 1 John 2:9-11.

"Fearful is the power of self-deception on the human mind! What blindness! set-
ting light for darkness and darkness for light!"-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.

The Eyes and the Eyesalve D Wednesday

August 19
7. What "organs" has God placed among His people and for what purpose?
Ephesians 1:17-19. Under what condition will they function effectively?
However, what would many do if they could?

"God has given His church eyes which He requires to anoint with wisdom, that
they may see clearly; but many would put out the eyes of the church if they could; for
they would not have their deeds come to the light, lest they should be reproved." - Tes-
timonies, vol. 4, pp. 88, 89.

8. What is the heavenly eyesalve that Christ offers us? Revelation 3:18 (last
part); Hebrews 4:12; James 1:5.

"The 'eyesalve,' the Word of God, makes the conscience smart under its applica-
tion; for it convicts of sin. But the smarting is necessary that the healing may follow,
and the eye be single to the glory of God. The sinner, beholding himself in God's great
moral looking glass, sees himself as God views him, and exercises repentance toward
God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, p. 965.
"The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern between the
evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.

- 28-
"The eyesalve is the true spiritual discernment that is so wanting among us, for
spiritual things must be spiritually discerned." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, p. 965.

Willful Blindness D Thursday

August 20
9. What kind of blindness will not respond to the heavenly eyesalve? Matthew
13:15; John 9:39-41. What will happen to those who choose to remain in
this condition? Hosea 4: 17.

"There is a blindness upon human minds that is willful." -Selected Messages. book 2, p.
135.
"There will be no excuse for those who choose to go in error when they might
understand what is truth. In His sufferings and death Jesus has made atonement for
all sins of ignorance, but there is no provision made for willful blindness." - The SDA
Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1145.

10. For what neglect, also, will men be accountable? John 15:22.

"[John 15:22 quoted.] ... Those who have an opportunity to hear the truth, and
yet take no pains to hear or understand it, thinking that if they do not hear, they will
not be accountable, will be judged guilty before God the same as if they had heard and
rejected." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1145.

Recapitulation o Friday
August 21
a. What is increasing and what is decreasing among the professed people of'
God?
b. How do men become the authors of their own destruction?
c. Describe those who stand in their own light.
d. When applied, how does the spiritual eyesalve work?
e. Name the most dangerous kind of blindness.

More from the pen of inspiration:
"Those who have a spirit of opposition to the work that for twenty-six years
we have been pressed by the Spirit of God to do, and who would break down
our testimony, I saw are not fighting against us, but against God, who has laid
upon us the burden of a work that He has not given to others. Those who ques-
tion and quibble, and think it a virtue to doubt, and who would discourage;
those who have been the means of making our work hard and of weakening our
faith, hope, and courage have been the ones to surmise evil, to insinuate
suspicious charges, and to watch with jealousy for occasion against us. They
take it for granted that because we have human weaknesses it is a positive
evidence that we are wrong and that they are right. If they can find a semblance
of anything that they can use to injure us they do it with a spirit of triumph and
are ready to denounce our work of reproving wrong and condemning sin as a
harsh, dictatorial spirit. "-Testimonies. vol. 3. p. 260.

WAITING AND WATCHING

The watching attitude is one of the characteristics which distinguishes the rem-
nant from the popular churches. The faithful few will watch to resist evil, to
escape Satan's snares, to obtain the victory over self. And while they are wat-
ching, they will be praying and working

KEY TEXT: "Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be
sober" (l Thessalonians 5:6).

The Only Safe Attitude o Sunday

August 23
1. How does Christ admonish us concerning the need of watching? Revelation
16: 15; Mark 13:35-37. To what time does this admonition refer? Revelation
22:11.

" ... What time is here referred to? Not to the revelation of Christ in the clouds of
heaven to find a people asleep. No; but to His return from His ministration in the most
holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, when He lays off His priestly attire and clothes
Himself with garments of vengeance, and when the mandate goes forth: .. ."-Testi-
monies, vol. 2, p. 190.

2. What illustration teaches the need of watching for Christ's second coming?
Matthew 24:42-44.

Many Asleep o Monday

August 24
3. What illustration shows that many professed Advent believers will not be
found watching? Matthew 24:45-51. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say
about this class?

"But Christ brings to view another class: 'If that evil servant shall say in his
heart. .. .'''- The Desire of Ages, p. 634.
"He was a 'servant,' outwardly devoted to the service of God while at heart he
had yielded to Satan. He does not, like the scoffer, openly deny the truth, but reveals
in his life the sentiment of the heart-that the Lord's coming is delayed. Presumption
renders him careless of eternal interests. He accepts the world's maxims and con-
forms to its customs and practices. Selfishness, worldly pride and ambitions
predominate. Fearing that his brethren may stand higher than himself, he begins to
disparage their efforts and impugn their motives. Thus he smites his fellow servants.
As he alienates himself from the people of God he unites more and more with the
ungodly. He is found eating and drinking 'with the drunken'-joining with worldlings
and partaking of their spirit. .. ."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 102.

- 30-
"They [those who have neglected to purify their souls by obeying the truth]
became indifferent and careless, as though His coming were yet in the distance. But
while their interest was buried up in their worldly gains, the work closed in the
heavenly sanctuary, and they were unprepared." -Ibid., vol. 2, p. 191.

4. What instruction is being overlooked by many? Luke 12:38. What vision

was given to Sister White concerning this class?

" ... I saw some becoming weary; their eyes were directed downward, and they
were engrossed with earthly things, and were unfaithful in watching. They were say-
ing: 'In the first watch we expected our Master, but were disappointed. We thought
surely He would come in the second watch, but that passed, and He came not. We
may be again disappointed. We need not be so particular. He may not come in the
following watch. Weare in the third watch, and now we think it best to lay up our
treasure on the earth, that we may be secure against want.' Many were sleeping,
stupefied with the cares of this life and allured by the deceitfulness of riches from
their waiting, watching position." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 192.
" ... Are we prepared without delay to open to Him immediately and welcome
Him in? Watch, watch, watch. Nearly all have ceased their watching and waiting; we
are not ready to open to Him immediately. The love of the world has so occupied our
thoughts that our eyes are not turned upward, but downward to the earth. We are
hurrying about, engaging with zeal and earnestness in different enterprises, but God
is forgotten, and the heavenly treasure is not valued. We are not in a waiting, watch-
ing position.... " -Ibid.• pp. 195, 196.

Important Characteristic ofLast Remnant o Tuesday

August 25
5. What attitude designates the remnant people of God in these last days? Luke
12:37 (first part). What will they do while they are watching? Luke 21:36.

"A company was presented before me in contrast to the one described [see first
part of note to question 4]. They were waiting and watching. Their eyes were directed
heavenward, and the words of their Master were upon their lips: 'What I say unto you
I say unto all, Watch.''' - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 192.
"The attitude of watching is to designate the church as God's people indeed. By
this sign the waiting ones are distinguished from the world and show that they are
pilgrims and strangers upon the earth." -Ibid., p. 205.

6. How does Paul address this last generation of believers? 1 Thessalonians

5:4-6; 2 Thessalonians 3:5. How will the faithful remnant people follow the
example of Jesus and show that they are actually waiting and watching?
John 9:4.

" ... By waiting and watching, God's people are to manifest their peculiar
character, their separation from the world. By our watching position we are to show
that we are truly strangers and pilgrims upon the earth. The difference between those
who love the world and those who love Christ is so plain as to be unmistakable. While
worldlings are all earnestness and ambition to secure earthly treasure, God's people
are not conformed to the world, but show by their earnest, watching, waiting position
that they are transformed; that their home is not in this world, but that they are seek-
ing a better country, even a heavenly."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 194.
"Those who are watching for the Lord are purifying their souls by obedience to
the truth. With vigilant watching they combine earnest working. Because they know

- 31-
that the Lord is at the door, their zeal is quickened to co-operate with the divine intel-
ligences in working for the salvation of souls." - The Desi/'e of Ages, p. 634.

A Serious Warning D Wednesday

August 26
7. Against what snare does Christ warn the faithful few who are waiting and
watching in these last days? Luke 21:34, 35. Why are the angels of God
watching over them with great concern?

"Angels were represented to me as looking on with intense interest to mark the

appearance of the weary yet faithful watcher, lest they be too sorely tried, and sink
under the toil and hardships made doubly severe because their brethren had been
diverted from their watch, and become drunk with worldly cares and beguiled by
worldly prosperity. These heavenly angels grieved that those who were once watch-
ing should, by their indolence and unfaithfulness, increase the trial and burdens of
those who were earnestly and perseveringly endeavoring to maintain their waiting,
watching position."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 193.

8. What would most certainly turn us away from our waiting, watching posi-
tion? 1 John 2:15.

"I saw that it was impossible to have the affections and interests engrossed in
worldly cares, to be increasing earthly possessions, and yet be in a waiting, watching
position, as our Saviour has commanded. Said the angel: 'They can secure but one
world. In order to acquire the heavenly treasure, they must sacrifice the earthly. They
cannot have both worlds.' I saw how necessary a continuance of faithfulness in watch-
ing was in order to escape the delusive snares of Satan."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 193.

Why and How D Thursday

August 27
9. What is one of the main reasons why we must watch? Matthew 25:13.

"But the day and the hour of His coming Christ has not revealed. He stated plain-
ly to His disciples that He Himself could not make known the day or the hour of His
second appearing. Had He been at liberty to reveal this, why need He have exhorted
them to maintain an attitude of constant expectancy? There are those who claim to
know the very day and hour of our Lord's appearing. Very earnest are they in map-
ping out the future. But the Lord has warned them off the ground they occupy. The
exact time of the second coming of the Son of man is God's mystery."-The Desire of
Ages. pp. 632, 633.

10. What time limit does Christ have in mind when He tells us to watch and pray
and work? Matthew 6:34.

"You should feel that you have only to do with today. Overcome for today; deny
self for today; watch and pray for today; obtain victories in God for today." - Testi-
monies, vol. 3, p. 333.
"The Lord requires us to perform the duties to today and to endure its trials. We
are today to watch that we offend not in word or deed. We must today praise and
honor God. By the exercise of living faith today we are to conquer the enemy. We
must today seek God and be determined that we will not rest satisfied without His

- 32-
presence. We should watch and work and pray as though this were the last day that
would be granted us... ."-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 200.

Recapitulation o Friday
August 28
a. What will happen to those who are not watchful?
b. Describe the attitude taken by the class represented by the evil servant.
c. By what attitude do the faithful remnant show that they are actually
watching?
d. What is entirely incompatible with the watching position?
e. If Christ told us to maintain an attitude of constant expectancy, what does
this teach us? •

More from the pen of inspiration:

"The desire of our Lord is that we should be watching, so that when

He cometh and knocketh we may open to Him immediately. A blessing
is pronounced upon those servants whom He finds watching. 'He shall
gird Himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth
and serve them.' Who among us in these last days will be thus specially
honored by the Master of assemblies? Are we prepared without delay to
open to Him immediately and welcome Him in? Watch, watch, watch.
Nearly all have ceased their watching and waiting; we are not ready to
open to Him immediately. The love of the world has so occupied our
thoughts that our eyes are not turned upward, but downward to the
earth. We are hurrying about, engag'ing with zeal and earnestness in dif-
ferent enterprises, but God is forgotten, and the heavenly treasure is not
valued. We are not in a waiting, watching position. The love of the world
and the deceitfulness of riches eclipse our faith, and we do not long for,
and love, the appearing of our Saviour. We try too hard to take care of
self ourselves. We are uneasy and greatly lack a firm trust in God. Many
worry and work, contrive and plan, fearing they may suffer need. They
cannot afford time to pray or to attend religious meetings and, in their
care for themselves, leave no chance for God to care for them. And the
Lord does not do much for them, for they give Him no opportunity. They
do too much for themselves, and believe and trust in God too little.
"The love of the world has a terrible hold upon the people whom the
Lord has commanded to watch and pray always, lest coming suddenly
He find them sleeping. 'Love not the world, neither the things that are in
the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of Iife, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the
world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of
God abideth forever.' "- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 195, 196.

"NOT DEFILED WITH WOMEN"

It is clear that the remnant people of God are not to be involved in any
ecumenical movement. The call for separation "from sin and sinners" entails a
denominational separation, not only for honest Catholics and Protestants, but
also for faithful Adventists

tion 14:4).

Apostasy 0 Sunday
August 30
1. What symbol is used in the Bible to represent a church that proves to be un-
faithful to God? Ezekiel 16:8, 32-35; Jeremiah 3:20. What attitude of the
church is regarded as a violation of her spiritual marriage vow?

"The unfaithfulness of the church to Christ in permitting her confidence and af-
fection to be turned from Him, and allowing the love of worldly things to occupy the
soul, is likened to the violation of the marriage vow. The sin of Israel in departing
from the Lord is presented under this figure." - The Great Controversy, p. 381.

2. What family of fallen churches is pointed out in the New Testament proph-
ecy? Revelation 17:4,5.

"Babylon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By her daughters must be symbolized

churches that cling to her doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacrific-
ing the truth and the approval of God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with the
world."- The Great Controversy, pp. 382, 383.

Separation Required o Monday

August 31
3. What call is to be regarded as a principle by the people of God? Isaiah 48:20;
52: 11. Quote three examples showing when, why and how this principle was
applied, repeatedly, in the Christian era.

a) In the first centuries:

"After a long and severe conflict, the faithful few decided to dissolve all union
with the apostate church if she still refused to free herself from falsehood and
idolatry. They saw that separation was an absolute necessity if they would obey the
word of God. They dared not tolerate errors fatal to their own souls, and set an exam-
ple which would imperil the faith of their children and children's children. To secure

- 34-
peace and unity they were ready to make any concession consistent with fidelity to
God; but they felt that even peace would be too dearly purchased at the sacrifice of
principle. If unity could be secured only by the compromise of truth and righteous-
ness, then let there be difference, and even war." - The Great Controversy, p. 45.

b) In the sixteenth century

"Romanists have persisted in bringing against Protestants the charge of heresy,

and willful separation from the true church. But these accusations apply rather to
themselves. They are the ones who laid down the banner of Christ, and departed from
'the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.' Jude 3." -Ibid., p. 51.

c) In 1844

"Those who sought to shut out the testimony of God's word, they could not
regard as constituting the church of Christ, 'the pillar and ground of the truth.' Hence
they felt themselves justified in separating from their former connection. In the sum-
mer of 1844 about fifty thousand withdrew from the churches."-Ibid., p. 376.

4. What call is to be directed to the faithful believers in the fallen denomina-

tions before the close of probation? Revelation 18:4.

"The state of corruption and apostasy that in the last days would exist in the
religious world, was presented to the prophet John in the vision of Babylon, 'that
great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.' Revelation 17:18. Before its
destruction the call is to be given from heaven, 'Come out of her, My people, that ye
be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.' Revelation 18:4.
As in the days of Noah and Lot, there must be a marked separation from sin and sin-
ners." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 167.
"Notwithstanding the spiritual darkness and alienation from God that exist in the
churches which constitute Babylon, the great body of Christ's true followers are still
to be found in their communion. There are many of these who have never seen the
special truths for this time. Not a few are dissatisfied with their present condition, and
are longing for clearer light. They look in vain for the image of Christ in the churches
with which they are connected. As these bodies depart farther and farther from the
truth, and ally themselves more closely with the world, the difference between the
two classes will widen, and it will finally result in separation. The time will come
when those who love God supremely can no longer remain in connection with such as
are 'lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but deny-
ing the power thereof.' "- The Great Controversy, p. 390.

The Laodicean Church o Tuesday

September 1
5. What warnings were given to the professed people of God in the Laodicean
period? Revelation 3:15, 16.

"If most earnest vigilance is not manifested at the great heart of the work to pro-
tect the interests of the cause, the church will become as corrupt as the churches of
other denominations."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 513.
" ...Thus opportunity after opportunity is placed before them [God's children] of
gaining the victory and proving themselves true to God. But if they continue to mani-
fest rebellion, God is compelled at last to remove His Spirit and light from them."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1146.

- 35-
6. How does God regard friendship with the world? James 4:4. In what condi-
tion were the Advent people seen through the eyes of prophecy?

"Through union with the world the church will become corrupt,-'a cage of every
unclean and hateful bird.' "- The Review and Herald. February 26. 1895.

Forbidden Connections o Wednesday

September 2
7. What warning should we heed concerning those who are working on worldly
plans? What is one of the unavoidable consequences when the church unites
with the world? Amos 3:3.

"To yoke up with those who are unconsecrated, and yet be loyal to the truth, is
simply impossible. We cannot unite with those who are serving themselves, who are
working on worldly plans, and not lose our connection with the heavenly Coun-
selor."- The SDA Bible Commentmy [E.G. White Comments]. vol. 5, p. 1086.
"Even if they have to walk as did Enoch,-with God alone,-his children must
separate from those who do not obey Him." -Ibid.. vol. 2. p. 1037.
"Let us not form unholy bonds of union with the friends of the world; for God has
pronounced His curse upon all such unions."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 277.

8. What is our only safe course toward those who teach error? Romans 16: 17; 2
Timothy 3:5 (last part).

"I was shown the necessity of those who believe that we are having the last
message of mercy, being separate from those who are daily imbibing new errors. I
saw that neither young nor old should attend their meetings; for it is wrong to thus en-
courage them [false shepherds who are in darkness] while they teach error that is a
deadly poison to the soul and teach for doctrines the commandments of men. The in-
fluence of such gatherings is not good. If God has delivered us from such darkness
and error, we should stand fast in the liberty wherewith He has set us free and rejoice
in the truth. God is displeased with us when we go to listen to error, without being
obliged to go; for unless He sends us to those meetings where error is forced home to
the people by the power of the will, He will not keep us. The angels cease their watch-
ful care over us, and we are left to the buffetings of the enemy, to be darkened and
weakened by him and the power of his evil angels; and the light around us becomes
contaminated with the darkness." -Early Writings. pp. 124, 125.

Separated from Sin and Sinners o Thursday

September 3
9. Following the example of the honest ones who are to "come out" of the fallen
denominations (separation "from sin and sinners"), what must the "sighing
and crying" Adventists do before they can be sealed? 2 Corinthians 6:17,18.

"The time of the judgment is a most solemn period, when the Lord gathers His
own from among the tares. Those who have been members of the same family are
separated. A mark is placed upon the righteous." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 234.
"The angel is to place a mark upon the forehead of all who are separated from sin
and sinners, and the destroying angel will follow, to slay utterly both old and
young." - Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 505. .

By surrendering completely to the control of the Holy Spirit, the remnant people
of God will have their lips sanctified to such a point that they will meet the
description in James 3:2

KEY TEXT: "And in their mouth was found no guile: ... " (Revelation 14:5).

Right and Wrong Use of the Tongue D Sunday

September 6
1. What will not be found with the 144,000 in connection with the gift of
speech? Zephaniah 3:13; Revelation 14:5 (first part). With what questions
should we examine ourselves if we want to belong to this company?

"My brethren and sisters, how are you employing the gift of speech? Have you
learned so to control the tongue that it shall ever obey the dictates of an enlightened con-
science and holy affections? Is your conversation free from levity, pride and malice,
deceit and impurity? Are you without guile before God? Words exert a telling power.
Satan will, if possible, keep the tongue active in his service. Of ourselves we cannot
control the unruly member. Divine grace is our only hope."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 175.

2. What warning should we take into serious consideration? James 3:2-10.

What is included in the word "guile" as it is used in Revelation 14:5 (first
part)? 1 Timothy 6:4, 5.

"Guile is too often found in your mouth-low expressions that proceed from a
heart cherishing corrupt thoughts and evil desires." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 302.
"Guile includes impurity in all its forms. An impure thought tolerated, an unholy
desire cherished, and the soul is contaminated, its integrity compromised." -Ibid., vol.
5, p. 177.
"Guile will not be found in the lips of the true Christian. Not an impure thought
will be indulged in, not a word spoken that is approaching to sensuality, not an action
that has the least appearance of eviL" -Medical Minisl1y, p. 143.

Essential Condition D Monday

September 7
3. What condition must be met by all who want to have blessings in this life and
inherit eternal life? Psalm 34:12-14; 1 Peter 3:9, 10; 2:1, 2.

"In speech, as in life, they [those who have learned of Christ] will be simple,
straightforward, and true; for they are preparing for the fellowship of those holy ones
in whose mouth is found no guile." -Prophets and Kings, p. 252.

- 38-
4. What did the psalmist say, showing that our words will affect our salvation?
Psalm 15:1-3.

Condemnedfor Using Wrong Words o Tuesday

September 8
5. What characters, condemned for the misuse of the tongue, will be kept out of
the kingdom? 1 Corinthians 5:11; Jude 8-10, 16.

"Malice, guile, hypocrisy, envy, and evil speaking are things which God abhors,
and no one who reveals those fruits in his life will enter the kingdom of heaven. "-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 940.

6. How did Christ show that the misuse of the tongue leads to perdition? Mat-
thew 12:36, 37.

"How many words are spoken in lightness and foolishness, in jesting and joking!
This would not be so did the followers of Christ realize the truth of the words, 'Every
idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.'
"Harsh and unkind words, words of censure and criticism of God's work and His
messengers, are indulged in by those who profess to be His children." - The SDA Bibte
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1141.

"Yea, yea; Nay, nay" o Wednesday

September 9
7. In the sermon on the mount, what did Jesus say on the subject of com-
munication? Matthew 5:37. What is the deeper meaning of these words?

"These words condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletives that border
on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the evasion of truth, the flat-
tering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresentations in trade, that are current in
society and in the business world. They teach that no one who tries to appear what he
is not, or whose words do not convey the real sentiment of his heart, can be called
truthful.
"If these words of Christ were heeded, they would check the utterance of evil sur-
mising and unkind criticism; for in commenting upon the actions and motives of
another, who can be certain of speaking the exact truth? How often pride, passion,
personal resentment, color the impression given! A glance, a word, even an intonation
of the voice, may be vital with falsehood. Even facts may be so stated as to convey a
false impression.... " -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 68.

8. What was Paul's admonition concerning the power of speech? Colossians

4:6; Ephesians 4:29.

"In seeking to correct or reform others we should be careful of our words. They
will be a savor of life unto life or of death unto death. In giving reproof or counsel,
many indulge in sharp, severe speech, words not adapted to heal the wounded soul.
By these ill-advised expressions the spirit is chafed, and often the erring ones are
stirred to rebellion....
"Not one word is to be spoken unadvisedly. No evil speaking, no frivolous talk, no
fretful.repining or impure suggestion, will escape the lips of him who is following
Christ. The apostle Paul, writing by the Holy Spirit, says, 'Let no corrupt com-
munication proceed out of your mouth.' Eph. 4:29. A corrupt communication does not

- 39-
mean only words that are vile. It means any expression contrary to holy principles
and pure and undefiled religion. It includes impure hints and covert insinuations of
evil. Unless instantly resisted, these lead to great sin." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 337.

Isaiah's Experience, Our Experience o Thursday

September 10
9. Describe the experience of Isaiah when he saw the Lord in His holy temple.
Isaiah 6:5-7. Whose experience is represented in Isaiah's vision? What does
the live coal symbolize?

"The vision given to Isaiah represents the condition of God's people in the last
days. They are privileged to see by faith the work that is going forward in the heavenly
sanctuary. 'And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in this
temple the ark of his testament.' As they look by faith into the holy of holies, and see
the work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, they perceive that they are a people of
unclean lips,-a people whose lips have often spoken vanity, and whose talents have
not been sanctified and employed to the glory of God. Well may they despair as they
contrast their own weakness and unworthiness with the purity and loveliness of the
glorious character of Christ. But if they, like Isaiah, will receive the impression the
Lord designs shall be made upon the heart, if they will humble their souls before God,
there is hope for them.... " - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1139.
"The live coal is symbolical of purification. If it touches the lips, no impure word
will fall from them. The live coal also symbolizes the potency of the efforts of the ser-
vants of the Lord." -Ibid., p. 1141.

10. What is one of the most important lessons that we should learn from Christ?
Isaiah 50:4. What will be the visible result when we have gone through the
same cleansing process as Isaiah? Matthew 12:35 (first part).

"Let every soul who claims to be a son or a daughter of God examine himself in
the light of heaven; let him consider the polluted lips that make him 'undone.' They
are the medium of communication. [Matt. 12:34, 35 quoted.] Then let them not be used
in bringing from the treasure of the heart words that will dishonor God and
discourage those around you, but use them for the praise and glory of God, who has
formed them for this purpose. When the cleansing coal is applied from the glowing
altar, the conscience will be purged from dead works to serve the living God; and
when the love of Jesus is the theme of contemplation, the words coming from human
lips will be full of praise and thanksgiving to God and to the Lamb." - The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, pp. 1140, 1141.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, September 19,1981

FAULTLESS BEFORE THE THRONE

When Christ said that we should be perfect, even as our heavenly Father is
perfect (Mat. 5:48), He taught that the character of God must be restored in
those who are preparing to have a place in the kingdom of God. This point is well
understood by the 144,000

KEY TEXT: " ... for they are without fault before the throne of God" (Revelation
14:5).

Candidates/or the Kingdom 0/ Heaven D Sunday

September 13
1. What occurred in heaven? Revelation 12:7-9. What privilege has been ex-
tended to us? Revelation 21:3, 4, 7. How does Satan object?

"It was God's purpose to re-populate heaven with the human family, if they
would show themselves obedient to His every word. Adam was to be tested, to see
whether he would be obedient, as the loyal angels, or disobedient. If he stood the test,
his instruction to his children would have been only of loyalty. His mind and thoughts
would have been as the mind and thoughts of God." -TheSDA Bible Commenlary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. I, p. 1082.
"Satan urges before God his accusations against them [the remnant church],
declaring that they have by their sins forfeited the divine protection, and claiming the
right to destroy them as transgressors. He pronounces them just as deserving as
himself of exclusion from the favor of God. 'Are these,' he says, 'the people who are
to take my place in heaven and the place of the angels who united with me? ... ' "
-Teslimonies, vol. 5, p. 473.

2. Why did God place us on this earth? What preparation is needed before we
and our children can occupy the mansions prepared for us? John 14:2, 3.

"Children should be taught that they are only probationers here, and educated to
become inhabitants of the mansions which Christ is preparing for those who love Him
and keep His commandments."- The Adventist Home, p. 146.
"This world is not the Christians' heaven, but merely the workshop of God,
where we are to be fitted up to unite with sinless angels in a holy heaven."- Testimonies,
vol. 2, p. 187.
"How long a time are you designing to take to prepare to be introduced into the
society of heavenly angels in glory? In the state which you and your family are in at
present, all heaven would be marred should you be introduced therein. The work for
you must be done here. This earth is the fitting-up place. You have not one moment to
lose. All is harmony, peace, and love in heaven. No discord, no strife, no censuring,
no unloving words, no clouded brows, no jars there; and no one will be introduced

- 41-
there who possesses any of these elements so destructive to peace and happiness.
Study to be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate, laying up
for yourselves a good foundation against the time to come, that you may lay hold on
everlasting life." -Ibid., vol. 1, pp. 705, 706.

Without Spot or Wrinkle D Monday

September 14
3. In the plan of redemption, when were we elected to stand without fault
before God? Ephesians 1:4. What questions affect our election?

"God will test every man who enters His service. He does not ask, Do they
possess learning and eloquence? Have they ability to command and control and
manage? He asks, Will they represent My character? Will they walk in humility, that I
may teach them My way? The soul temple must not be defiled by any loose or unclean
practice. Those whom I will acknowledge in the courts of heaven must be without
spot and wrinkle." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments]. vol. 7. p. 969.

4. How does Paul describe the condition of the remnant church that will be
prepared for translation? Ephesians 5:26, 27. What is this condition accord-
ing to the Spirit of Prophecy?

"Those only who through faith in Christ obey all of God's commandments will
reach the condition of sinlessness in which Adam lived before his transgression. They
testify to their love of Christ by obeying all His precepts." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments]. vol. 6. p. 1118.

Essential Lines of Christian Experience D Tuesday

September 15
5. How does Peter explain the process by which we are to be qualified to stand
before the throne of God? 2 Peter 1 :4-11.

"The sanctification of the soul by the working of the Holy Spirit is the implanting
of Christ's nature in humanity. Gospel religion is Christ in the life-a living, active
principle. It is the grace of Christ revealed in character and wrought out in good
works. The principles of the gospel cannot be disconnected from any department of
practical life. Every line of Christian experience and labor is to be a representation of
the life of Christ." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 384.

6. What principle is essential for the obtaining of the incorruptible crown? 1

Corinthians 9:25. What light did the Lord reveal to us in order to make our
threefold sanctification (mind, soul and body) possible?

"I saw that our heavenly Father has bestowed upon us the great blessing of light
upon the health reform that we may obey the claims which He has upon us and glorify
Him in our bodies and spirits which are His and finally stand without fault before the
throne of God. Our faith requires us to elevate the standard and take advance steps."
- Testimonies. vol. 1. p. 488.

The Whole Man to Be Sanctified D Wednesday

September 16
7. What work is the Holy Spirit to do in us through the truth? Romans 15:16
(last part); 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (second part); John 17:17; 1 Peter 1:22
(first part).

- 42-
"By the word and the Spirit of God are opened to men the great principles of
righteousness embodied in His law. And since the law of God is 'holy, and just, and
good,' a transcript of the divine perfection, it follows that a character formed by obe-
dience to that law will be holy. Christ is a perfect example of such a character."-The
Great Controversy, p. 469.

. 8. Explain the process of sanctification through which we must go before we

can be blameless. 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

"The true Christian obtains an experience which brings holiness. He is without a

spot of guilt upon the conscience, or a taint of corruption upon the soul. The spirituali-
ty of the law of God, with its limiting principles, is brought into his life. The light of
truth irradiates his understanding. A glow of perfect love for the Redeemer clears
away the miasma which has interposed between his soul and God. The will of God has
become his will, pure, elevated, refined, and sanctified. His countenance reveals the
light of heaven. His body is a fit temple for the Holy Spirit. Holiness adorns his
character. God can commune with him; for soul and body are in harmony with God."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 909.

A n Essential Condition o Thursday

September 17
9. Through whose merits only can we become faultless? Revelation 7:13-15; 1
John 1:7.

"When tempted to murmur, censure, and indulge in fretfulness, wounding those

around you, and in so doing wounding your own soul, oh! let the deep, earnest, anx-
ious inquiry come from your soul, Shall I stand without fault before the throne of God?
Only the faultless will be there. None will be translated to heaven while their hearts
are filled with the rubbish of earth. Every defect in the moral character must first be
remedied, every stain removed by the cleansing blood of Christ, and all the unlovely,
unlovable traits of character overcome." - Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 705.

10. What will be the condition of the 144,000 before the throne of God? Revela-
tion 14:5 (second part). What appeal comes to us through the Spirit of
Prophecy?

"None but those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the
word of their testimony will be found with the loyal and true, without spot or stain of
sin, without guile in their mouths. We must be divested of our self-righteousness and
arrayed in the righteousness of Christ.
"The remnant that purify their souls by obeying the truth gather strength from
the trying process, exhibiting the beauty of holiness amid the surrounding apostasy."-
Selected Messages, book 2, p. 380.

Lesson 13 Sabbath, September 26, 1981

VESTED WITH THE GLORY OF GOD

Before long the remnant people of God will receive the latter rain, the Holy Spirit
in its fullness. Thousands of voices will then be giving the final warning all over
the world. Thus "everyone" will have "sufficient light to make his decision in-
telligently," and the inhabitants of the earth will be left without excuse

KEY TEXT: "And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven,
having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory"
(Revelation 18:1).

Old Testament Predictions o Sunday

September 20
1. To what future event does the prophetic declaration in Isaiah 6:3 point?

"An indescribable glory emanated from a personage on the throne, and His train
filled the temple, as His glory will finally fill the earth." - The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G.
White Comments), vol. 4, pp. 1139, 1140.

2. How did the Lord announce the same event, also, through other prophets?
Numbers 14:21; Psalm 72:19; Habakkuk 2:14.

"During the loud cry, the church aided by the providential interpositions of her
exalted Lord, will diffuse the knowledge of salvation so abundantly that light will be
communicated to every city and town. The earth will be filled with the knowledge of
salvation. So abundantly will the renewing Spirit of God have crowned with success
the intensely aCtive agencies, that the light of present truth will be seen flashing
everywhere." -Evangelism, p. 694.

New Testament Predictions o Monday

September 21
3. What did Jesus say as He had in mind the last warning to the world as
predicted in the Old Testament? Matthew 24:14.

"Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently." -The Greal
Conlroversy, p. 605.
"We must now by the Holy Spirit's power proclaim the great truths for these last
days. It will not be long before everyone will have heard the warning and made his
decision. Then shall the end come."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 24.

4. What vision was given to John the revelator concerning the final warning?
Revelation 18:1.

- 44-
"The last great conflict is before us, but help is to come to all who love God and
obey His law, and the earth, the whole earth, is to be lighted with the glory of God.
'Another angel' is to come down from heaven. This angel represents the giving of the
loud cry, which is to come from those who are preparing to cry mightily, with a strong
voice, [Rev. 18:1,2 quoted]." -Selected Messages, book 3, p. 412.
"The angel, the mighty angel from heaven, is to lighten the earth with His glory
(Rev. 18:1), while he cries mightily with a loud voice, 'Babylon the great is fallen, is
fallen' (verse 2)." -Ibid., p. 425.
"Deceptions, delusions, impostures will increase. The cries will come in from
every quarter, 'Lo, here is Christ! Lo, there is Christ!' 'But,' said Christ, 'Go ye not
... after them' (Luke 21:8). There will be one fierce struggle before the man of sin
shall be disclosed to this world-who he is and what has been his work.
"While the Protestant world is becoming very tender and affectionate toward the
man of sin (2 Thess. 2:3), shall [not] God's people take their place as bold and valiant
soldiers of Jesus Christ to meet the issue which must come, their lives hid with Christ
in God? Mystic Babylon has not been sparing in the blood of the saints and shall we
[not] be wide awake to catch the beams of light which have been shining from the
light of the angel who is to brighten the earth with his glory." -Ibid., p. 426.

The Church, a Transformed Body o Tuesday

September 22
5. What provision has Christ made, in behalf of a small remnant, for the
finishing of His work on earth? Isaiah 60: 1.

"Christ has made every provision that His church shall be a transformed body, il-
lumined with the Light of the world, possessing the glory of Emmanuel." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 419.

fullness, the completeness of the gospel plan is fulfilled in the life." -Ibid., p. 420.
"The revelation of His own glory in the form of humanity will bring heaven so
near to men that the beauty adorning the inner temple will be seen in every soul in
whom the Saviour dwells. Men will be captivated by the glory of an abiding Christ."-
Ibid.

6. What is the glory of Christ which is to be reflected through us? 2 Corinthians

3:18.

"By beholding Christ, by talking of Him, by beholding the loveliness of His

character we become changed. Changed from glory to glory. And what is glory?
Character,-and he becomes changed from character to character. Thus we see that
there is a work of purification that goes on by beholding Jesus." -Sons and Daughters of
God, p. 337.
"The glory of the church of God is in the piety of its members; for there is the
hiding of Christ's power." -Christian Service, p. 19.

Christ's Character in Us o Wednesday

September 23
7. How is the glory of Christ to be revealed in His faithful servants? Revelation
14:4 (second part); Romans 8: 17 (second part).

"Through trials and persecution, the glory-character-of God is revealed in His

chosen ones. The church of God, hated and persecuted by the world, are educated

- 45-
and disciplined in the school of Christ. They walk in narrow paths on earth; they are
purified in the furnace of affliction. They follow Christ through sore conflicts."-
Thoughts Fro1/! the Mount of Blessing, p. 31.

8. In what measure is the character of Christ to be reproduced in us? Colossians

1:27; Ephesians 1:23; 3:19.

"Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His
church. When the character of the Saviour shall be perfectly reproduced in His peo-
ple, then He will come to claim His own. It is the privilege of every Christian, not only
to look for, but to hasten, the coming of our Lord. Were all who profess His name
bearing fruit to His glory, how quickly the last great harvest would be ripened, and
Christ would come." -Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 324.

The Work a/the Holy Spirit o Thursday

September 24
9. How and through whom will the Holy Spirit plead with the fallen race for the
last time? John 16:8. How, only, will the world see the light of Christ's
righteousness in us?

"The work of the Holy Spirit is to convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and
of judgment. The world can only be warned by seeing those who believe the truth
sanctified through the'truth, acting upon high and holy principles, showing in a high,
elevated sense, the line of demarcation between those who keep the commandments
of God and those who trample them under their feet."-The SDA Bible Commenlary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 980.
" ... The law of God is to be magnified; its claims must be presented in their true,
sacred character, that the people may be brought to decide for or against the truth.
Yet the work will be cut short in righteousness. The message of Christ's
righteousness (which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God)
is to sound from one end of the earth to the other to prepare the way of the Lord. This
is the glory of God, which closes the work of the third angel." - Testimonies, vol. 6. p. 19
(parenthesis supplied).
"The glory of Christ is revealed in the law, which is a transcript of His character,
and His transforming efficacy is felt upon the soul until men become changed to His
likeness."-Selected Messages. book 1, p. 240.

10. What is God's promise in behalf of the faithful few from among nominal
Israel? Romans 9:27, 28. What proportion of this remnant will be used by
the Holy Spirit to lighten the world with the glory of Christ's righteousness?
Acts 2: 17 (first part); Romans 11 :26.

"The glory of this light, which is the very glory of the character of Christ, is to be
manifested in the individual Christian, in the family, in the church, in the ministry of
the word, and in every institution established by God's people." - Testimonies. vol. 6. p. 11.
" ... There will be no confusion, because all will be in harmony with the mind of
the Spirit. The barriers separating believer from believer will be broken down, and
God's servants will speak the same things. The Lord will co-operate with His ser-
vants. All will pray understandingly the prayer that Christ taught His servants: 'Thy
kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.' Matthew 6:10."-lbid.,
vol. 8. p. 251.
"This work can be accomplished only by the whole church acting their part under
the guidance and in the power of Christ." -Ibid., p. 47.
