FOREWORD

In the religious sphere of society a great paradox exists, in that, while

the means for the complete perfecting of character are abundantly available,
different influences neutralize their benefits. Throughout the human com-
munity, prayer in one form or another is a universal practice. Few realize
that such prayer is only of a temporary nature. The conditions for effectual
prayer are either unknown or disregarded.
Because prayer is so generally neglected and unappreciated in this time
of reformation, the power and purpose for personal and collective security is
lacking. Instrumentalities given to aid the process of reformation, if
neglected, soon become lost and unavailable at this critical time. This
avenue should never become closed to the "remnant" because the agency of
prayer is not limited by parochial or national boundaries. Prayer can be in-
stantaneous in both utterance and reception and it reaches the realm of in-
finite wisdom uncensored and unperverted. It provides endless possibilities
for infallible results.
This series of lessons concerning Prayer should encourage all Sabbath
School students to improve every capacity and talent that they have. All
need a better understanding and application of the instruction available con-
cerning effectual prayer. All need to realize the benefits available especially
as the drama of the ages and the final crisis with the great "Babylon" is fast
approaching.
Some elements of revival and reformation continue with every dispensa-
tion and prophetic period, but the imparted power of the Holy Spirit is need-
ed to give more intelligence and receptiveness for the present truth. The
responsibility given us in this time makes this all important.

DIVINE COMMUNICATION

After the fall when man had lost face-to-face communion with God, prayer took
its place and the heathen philosophy has for many perverted its true nature

KEY TEXT: "Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in
ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right
way" (1 Samuel 12:23).

Communication with God o Sunday

March 30
1. What channel of communication between heaven and created beings was
established from the beginning? Genesis 3:9; Hebrews 1:13 (first part), 14.

"The holy pair were not only children under the fatherly care of God but students
receiving instruction from the all-wise Creator. They were visited by angels, and
were granted communion with their Maker, with no obscuring veil between. They
were full of the vigor imparted by the tree of life, and their intellectual power was but
little less than that of the angels. The mysteries of the visible universe- 'the won-
drous works of Him which is perfect in knowledge' (Job 37:16)-afforded them an ex-
haustless source of instruction and delight. The laws and operations of nature, which
have engaged men's study for six thousand years, were opened to their minds by the
infinite Framer and Upholder of all....
"So long as they remained loyal to the divine law, their capacity to know, to en-
joy, and to love would continually increase. They would be constantly gaining new
treasures of knowledge, discovering fresh springs of happiness, and obtaining clearer
and yet clearer conceptions of the immeasurable, unfailing love of God." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 50, 51.

2. Because direct communication as in the original plan was disrupted, what

two heathen philosophies of prayer developed? Job 15:1-5.

"The heathen looked upon their prayers as having in themselves merit to atone
for sin. Hence the longer the prayer the greater the merit. If they could become holy
by their own efforts they would have something in themselves in which to rejoice,
some ground for boasting. This idea of prayer is an outworking of the principle of
self-expiation which lies at the foundation of all systems of false religion. The
Pharisees had adopted this pagan idea of prayer, and it is by no means extinct in our
day, even among those who profess to be Christians. The repetition of set, customary
phrases, when the heart feels no need of God, is of the same character as the 'vain
repetitions' of the heathen.
"Prayer is not an expiation for sin; it has no virtue or merit of itself." - Thoughts
From the Mount of Blessing, p. 86.

Communication by Means ofPrayer o Monday

March 31

-5-
3. Although prayer is obviously unnecessary in times of direct communication,
what has now become a general attitude towards prayer and with what
result? Job 21:13-15.

"Satan works in many ways where he is not discerned, even through men and
women who are in positions of trust. He will suggest to their minds plausible errors of
thought and action and speech that will create doubt and work distrust where they
think there is assurance of safety. He will work upon dissatisfied ell:~ments to put
them in active operation. There will be a desire for greatness and honor. Envy will be
.
excited in minds where it is not supposed to exist, and circumstances will not be
wanting to cal1 it into action. Doubts will be raised, and flattering promises of gain will
be offered if the cross is not made so prominent. Satan will tempt some to think that
our faith stands as a barrier to great advancement and bars the way to reaching a high
worldly position and being cal1ed remarkable men and women."- Testimonies. vol. 5, p. 502.

4. When a soul is converted (born again), what does he do as the work of

redemption begins in him? Job 33:23-26.

"Our great need is itself an argument and pleads most eloquently in our behalf.
But the Lord is to be sought unto to do these things for us. He says, 'Ask, and it shal1
be given you.' "-Steps to Christ, p. 95.

Worship, Prayer and Intercession D Tuesday

April 1
5. After the flood when the human family had become reestablished socially,
what was also part of the true worship beside the building of an altar?
Genesis 12:7,8; 13:4.

"Abraham, 'the friend of God,' set us a worthy example. His was a life of prayer.
Wherever he pitched his tent, close beside it was set up his altar, cal1ing al1 within his
encampment to the morning and evening sacrifice. When his tent was removed, the
altar remained. In fol1owing years, there were those among the roving Canaanites
who received instruction from Abraham; and whenever one of these came to that
altar, he knew who had been there before him; and when he had pitched his tent, he
repaired the altar, and there worshiped the living God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 128.

6. How did Abraham intercede for one who brought him into a great danger?
What shows his concern for those who may not have fully turned from God to
their selfish lusts? Genesis 20:17, 18; 18:25, 32, 33.

"Though Lot had become a dwel1er in Sodom, he did not partake in the iniquity
of its inhabitants. Abraham thought that in that populous city there must be other
worshipers of the true God.... Abraham asked not once merely, but many times.
"Love for perishing souls inspired Abraham's prayer. While he loathed the sins
of that corrupt city, he desired that the sinners might be saved. His deep interest for
Sodom shows the anxiety that we should feel for the impenitent. We should cherish
hatred of sin, but pity and love for the sinner. Al1 arQund us are souls going down to
ruin as hopeless, as terrible, as that which befel1 Sodom... ." -Patriarchs and Prophets. pp.
139. 140.

Examples ofFaith in Prayer 0 Wednesday
April 2
7. How did one of Abraham's servants display his confidence in God by simple
prayer? Genesis 24:10·21.
". . . Remembering the words of Abraham, that God would send His angel with
him, he prayed earnestly for positive guidance. In the family of his master he was ac-
customed to the constant exercise of kindness and hospitality, and he now asked that
an act of courtesy might indicate the maiden whom God had chosen." -Patriarchs and Proph·
ets, p. 172.
8. During the time of the judges, what experience shows the confidence of Samuel
in prayer? What shows that the people also had faith in his prayer? 1 Samuel
7:5-8.
"There is need today of such a revival of true heart religion as was experienced
by ancient Israel. Repentance is the first step that must be taken by all who would
return to God. No one can do this work for another. We must individually humble our
souls before God and put away our idols. When we have done all that we can do, the
Lord will manifest to us His salvation.
"The people entreated Samuel, 'Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us,
that He will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 590.
Prayer is Not Unconditional 0 Thursday
April 3
9. What clearly remained as an essential part of Samuel's ministerial
priesthood? What important condition did he stress? 1 Samuel 12:20-25.
"As soon as Samuel began to judge Israel, even in his youth, he called an
assembly of the people for fasting and prayer, and deep humiliation before God. He
bore his solemn testimony from the mouth of God. The people then began to learn
where their strength was. They entreated Samuel to cease not to cry unto God for
them. Their enemies were aroused to meet them in battle, but God heard prayer in
their behalf. He wrought for them, and victory turned on the side of Israel."
-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 517,518.

10. When the spirit of reformation is truly working, what conditions for com-
munion with God will be met before any present themselves before Him in
prayer? Psalm 66:18; Proverbs 28:13.

"If we regard iniquity in our hearts, if we cling to any known sin, the Lord will
not hear us; but the prayer of the penitent, contrite soul is always accepted. When all
known wrongs are righted, we may believe that God will answer our petitions. Our
own merit will never commend us to the favor of God; it is the worthiness of Jesus
that will save us, His blood that will cleanse us; yet we have a work to do in complying
with the conditions of acceptance." -Steps to Christ, p. 95.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, April 12, 1980

LORD TEACH US TO PRAY

Although we, like the disciples, may know how to pray, we need to learn the prin-
ciples given by Christ so that our prayers may become more effectual

KEY TEXT: "Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the
Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every
man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear" (1 Peter
1:16,17).

Jesus'Lesson on Prayer o Sunday

April 6
1. When the disciples heard the difference between the prayer of Christ and the
formal prayers of their priests, what did they ask Jesus? Luke 11:1.
"Jesus gives them [His disciples] no new form of prayer. That which He has
before taught them He repeats, as if He would say, You need to understand what I
have already given. It has a depth of meaning you have not yet fathomed."-Thoughts
From the Mount 0/ Blessing, p. 103.

2. What did the disciples feel was lacking in their prayers? What model for
prayer did the Lord give? Luke 11:2-4.

"In all lines of our work there is need of greater earnestness. Time is passing.
God's servants are to be 'not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.'
People need the truth, and by earnest, faithful effort it is to be communicated to them.
Souls are to be sought for, prayed for, labored for. Earnest appeals are to be made.
Fervent prayers are to be offered. Our tame, spiritless petitions are to be changed into
petitions of intense earnestness. God's word declares: 'The effectual fervent prayer
of a righteous man availeth much.' "- Testimonies, vol. 7. p. 12.

Lessons to be Learned o Monday

April 7
3. While the disciples saw the manifestation of the power of God and miracles
by their hands, what need did Jesus see? Luke 10:17; Mark 6:30-32.

"As the disciples had seen the success of their labors, they were in danger of tak-
ing credit to themselves, in danger of cherishing spiritual pride, and thus falling under
Satan's temptations. A great work was before them, and first of all they must learn
that their strength was not in self, but in God. Like Moses in the wilderness of Sinai,
like David among the hills of Juaea, or Elijah by the brook Cherith, the disciples need-
ed to come apart from the scenes of their busy activity, to commune with Christ, with
nature, and with their own hearts." - The Desire 0/ Ages. p. 360.
4. Although the disciples had success with the power given them by Christ,
what more did they have to realize? What did the Lord permit to impress
them with this need? Luke 9:38-42; Matthew 17:19-21.

-8-
"In the estimation of the rabbis it was the sum of religion to be always in a bustle
of activity. They depended upon some outward performance to show their superior
piety. Thus they separated their souls from God, and built themselves up in self-
sufficiency. The same dangers still exist. As activity increases and men become suc-
cessful in doing any work for God, there is danger of trusting to human plans and
methods. There is a tendency to pray less, and to have less faith. Like the disciples,
we are in danger of losing sight of our dependence on God, and seeking to make a
savior of our activity. We need to look constantly to Jesus, realizing that it is His
power which does the work. While we are to labor earnestly for the salvation of the
lost, we must also take time for meditation, for prayer, and for the study of the word
of God. Only the work accomplished with much prayer, and sanctified by the merit of
Christ, will in the end prove to have been efficient for good." - The Desire of Ages, p. 362.

Sincerity in Prayer D Tuesday

April 8
5. How is the necessity for sincerity in prayer forcibly illustrated? Luke
11:5-13.

"We need grace, we need divine enlightenment, that through the Spirit we may
know how to ask for such things as we need. If our petitions are indited by the Lord
they will be answered.
"There are precious promises in the Scriptures to those who wait upon the Lord.
We all desire an immediate answer to our prayers, and are tempted to become
discouraged if our prayer is not immediately answered. Now, my experience has
taught me that this is a great mistake. The delay is for our special benefit. We have a
chance to see whether our faith is true and sincere, or changeable like the waves of
the sea. . . ." -Counsels on Health, pp. 380, 381.

6. What instruction did Jesus give to help that prayer might be sincere and ef-
fectual? Matthew 6:5-8.

"Christ impressed upon His disciples the idea that their prayers should be short,
expressing just what they wanted, and no more. He gives the length and substance of
their prayers, expressing their desires for temporal and spiritual blessings, and their
gratitude for the same. How comprehensive this sample prayer! It covers the actual
need of all. One or two minutes is long enough for any ordinary prayer. There may be
instances where prayer is in a special manner indited by the Spirit of God, where sup-
plication is made in the Spirit. The yearning soul becomes agonized and groans after
God. The spirit wrestles as did Jacob and will not be at rest without special manifesta-
tions of the power of God. This is as God would have it."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 581.

Public Prayer Should Be Audible D Wednesday

April 9
7. What instruction is given to guide churches and groups in worship and
prayer? Ecclesiastes 5:1, 2.

"I am pained as I see how little the gift of speech is appreciated. In reading the
Bible, in engaging in prayer, in bearing testimony in meeting, how necessary is clear,
distinct utterance! And how much is lost in family worship when the one offering
prayer bows the face down and speaks in a low, feebl~ voice! But as soon as family
worship is over, those who could not speak loud enough to be heard in prayer, can
usually speak in clear, distinct tones, and there is no difficulty in hearing what they

-9-
say. Prayer that is thus uttered is appropriate for the closet, but not edifying in family
or public worship; for unless those assembled can hear what is said, they cannot say
Amen. Nearly all can speak loud enough to be heard in ordinary conversation, and
why should they not speak thus when called upon to bear testimony or to offer
prayer?" -Cmtnsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 241.

8. What is often the disappointing consequence when prayer in collective wor-

ship is mumbled or indistinct? What does the apostle Paul say in this regard?
1 Corinthians 14:7·9, 15, 16.

"Instruction in vocal culture should be given in the home. Parents should teach
their children to speak so plainly that the listeners can hear every word. They should
teach them to read the Bible with clear, distinct utterance in a way that will honor
God. And let not those who kneel around the family altar put their faces in their hands
close down to the chair when they address God. Let them lift up their heads and with
holy awe speak to their heavenly Father, uttering their words in tones that can be
heard."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 381.

Reality in Prayer o Thursday

April 10

9. What makes prayer inspiring and contagious? What is lacking in long,

repetitious or formal prayers? Proverbs 15:23.

" ... The most eloquent of prayers are but idle words if they do not express the
true sentiments of the heart. But the prayer that comes from an earnest heart, when
the simple wants of the soul are expressed, as we would ask an earthly friend for a
favor, expecting it to be granted-this is the prayer of faith. God does not desire our
ceremonial compliments, but the unspoken cry of the heart broken and subdued with
a sense of its sin and utter weakness finds its way to the Father of all mercy."
- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 86, 87.

10. What should be recognized by every believer, and what will all who realize
this do? What must be remembered by all who would receive the full blessing
of prayer? Ephesians 6:18; Habakkuk 2:3 (last part).

"Many, even in their seasons of devotion, fail of receiving the blessing of real
communion with God. They are in too great haste. With hurried steps they press
through the circle of Christ's loving presence, pausing perhaps a moment within the
sacred precincts, but not waiting for counsel. They have no time to remain with the
divine Teacher. With their burdens they return to their work."-Education, p. 260.

Lesson 3 Sabbath, Apri119, 1980

PRAYER AS A PRIESTLY DUTY

As the heads of households had neglected their duties, God instituted the
priesthood to intercede for and to instruct His people

KEY TEXT: "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come
unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them"
(Hebrews 7:25).
A Channel ofIntercession Established 0 Sunday
April 13
1. What divine plan provided an official channel of intercession between God
and His people? Where were the people to bring their tokens of gratitude and
requests for pardon and mercy? Numbers 18:1,5-7; Deuteronomy 10:8;
12:11-14.

"By divine direction the tribe of Levi was set apart for the service of the sanc-
tuary. In the earliest times every man was the priest of his own household. In the days
of Abraham the priesthood was regarded as the birthright of the eldest son. Now, in-
stead of the first-born of all Israel, the Lord accepted the tribe of Levi for the work of
the sanctuary...." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 350.

2. What system of communication was established by divine direction and with

what promises? What lesson may be learned from the times designated in
this plan? Exodus 29:38, 39, 42, 43.

"The daily service consisted of the morning and evening burnt offering, the of-
fering of sweet incense on the golden altar, and the special offerings for individual
sins." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 352.

The Duty ofIntercession o Monday

April 14
3. What duty normally expected of priests and prophets was Jeremiah told not
• to perform in his day? How did Samuel regard a neglect of this duty?
Jeremiah 27:18; 7:16; 1 Samuel 12:23.

"As an interpreter of the meaning of the judgments beginning to fall upon Judah,
Jeremiah stood nobly in defense of the justice of God and of His merciful designs even in
the severest chastisements. Untiringly the prophet labored." -Prophets and Kings, p. 428.
"Samuel sought to encourage the people, that although they had sinned, yet if
they from that time followed the Lord, he would not forsake them, for his great
name's sake. [1 Samuel 12:23-25 quoted.]" -Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4, p. 68.

4. While the priest was the official medium for the transfer of sin and guilt,
what makes it clear that this did not preclude p'ersonal prayer? 2 Chronicles
6:28-31.

-11-
"In that which was said during the dedicatory services, Solomon had sought to
remove from the minds of those present the superstitions in regard to the Creator,
that had beclouded the minds of the heathen. The God of heaven is not, like the gods
of the heathen, confined to temples made with hands; yet He would meet with His
people by His Spirit when they should assemble at the house dedicated to His wor-
ship." -Prophets and Kings, p. 49.

God is Very Near D Tuesday

April 15
5. To help the children of Israel to be conscious of the divine presence, what did
the Lord establish? Where were both priests and people to direct their
prayers? Exodus 25:8,18-22.

"In the first apartment, or holy place, were the table of showbread, the
candlestick, or lampstand, and the altar of incense."
"Beyond the inner veil was the holy of holies, where centered the symbolic ser-
vice of atonement and intercession, and which formed the connecting link between
heaven and earth." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.

6. What manifestation was given to impress all with the nearness of God and
His interest in all that is done? How did this encourage the trust of the people
in prayer and intercession? Numbers 14:10 (last part); 1 Kings 8:10, 11.

"Above the mercy seat was the Shekinah, the manifestation of the divine
Presence; and from between the cherubim, God made known His will. Divine
messages were sometimes communicated to the high priest by a voice from the cloud.
Sometimes a light fell upon the angel at the right, to signify approval or acceptance,
or a shadow or cloud rested upon the one at the left to reveal disapproval or rejection."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 349.
"No language can describe the· glory of the scene presented within the sanc-
tuary-the gold-plated walls reflecting the light from the golden candlestick, the
brilliant hues of the richly embroidered curtains with their shining angels, the table,
and the altar of incense, glittering with gold; beyond the second veil the sacred ark,
with its mystic cherubim, and above it the holy Shekinah, the visible manifestation of
Jehovah's presence; all but a dim reflection of the glories of the temple of God in
heaven, the great center of the work for man's redemption." -Ibid.

God's Present Care for His People D Wednesday

April 16
7. While individual prayers for personal need are expected, what shows the im-
portance of official, priestly prayer for national interests? Exodus 32:31-34;
Isaiah 6:6-8.

"As Moses interceded for Israel, His timidity was lost in His deep interest and
love for those whom he had, in the hands of God been the means of doing so much.
The Lord listened to his pleadings, and granted his unselfish prayer." -Patn'archs and
Prophets, p. 319.

8. While the "throne of God," and the "true tabernacle" are in heaven, what
should the believers always realize? Exodus 33:14; Deuteronomy 20:1.

-12 -
"This experience-above all else the promise that the divine Presence would at-
tend him-was to Moses an assurance of success in the work before him; and he
counted it of infinitely greater worth than all the learning of Egypt or all his at-
tainments as a statesman or a military leader. No earthly power or skill or learning
can supply the place of God's abiding presence." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 328.
"Only the sense of God's presence can banish the fear that, for the timid child,
would make life a burden." -Education, p. 255.

To Our High Priest o Thursday

April 17
9. Where should believers turn their attention although it is not visible to
human eyes? What enables them to visualize this? Psalm 11:4; Hebrews
12:22-24; 8:1, 2; 4:13.

" ... When the priest offered incense before the Lord, he looked toward the ark;
and as the cloud of incense arose, the divine glory descended upon the mercy seat and
filled the most holy place, and often so filled both apartments that the priest was
obliged to retire to the door of the tabernacle. As in that typical service the priest
looked by faith to the mercy seat which he could not see, so the people of God are now
to direct their prayers to Christ, their great High Priest, who, unseen by human vi-
sion, is pleading in their behalf in the sanctuary above." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 353.

10. Beside the observance of the counsel and instruction concerning prayer,
both priestly and individual, what makes it effectual? Hebrews 7:25.

"[Heb. 7:25 quoted.] Though the ministration was to be removed from the earth-
ly to the heavenly temple; though the sanctuary and our great high priest would be
invisible to human sight, yet the disciples were to suffer no loss thereby. They
would realize no break in their communion, and no diminution of power because of
the Saviour's absence. While Jesus ministers in the sanctuary above, He is still by
His Spirit the minister of the church on earth. He is withdrawn from the eye of
sense, but His parting promise is fulfilled, [Matt. 28:20 quoted]. While He delegated
His power to inferior ministers, His energizing presence is still with His church."- The
Desire 0/ Ages, p. 166.

PRAYER THROUGH THE AGES

Prayer has been provided by the Creator as a means by which man may draw
near to and commune with Him

KEY TEXT: "Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in
my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be
accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of
prayer for all people" (Isaiah 56:7).

Privilege ofPrayer o Sunday

April 20
1. Recall some examples from the Old Testament that illustrate the virtue and
efficacy of intercessory prayer:

a. Moses for Israel (Exodus 32:30-33).

b. Moses for Miriam (Numbers 12:13).
c. Moses for Israel (Numbers 14:17; Deuteronomy 9:26).
d. Samuel for Israel (l Samuel 7:5).
e. David for Israel (1 Chronicles 21:17).
f. Hezekiah for the people (2 Chronicles 30:18).
g. Job for his friends (Job 42:10).

2. To what unlimited extent did the Lord provide the privilege of prayer among
mankind? Psalm 65:2; Isaiah 56:7.

"The Saviour does not, however, restrict us to the use of these exact words [as
given in the 'Lord's Prayer']. As one with humanity, He presents His own ideal of
prayer, words so simple that they may be adopted by the little child, yet so com-
prehensive that their significance can never be fully grasped by the greatest minds.
Weare taught to come to God with our tribute of thanksgiving, to make known our
wants, to confess our sins, and to claim His mercy in accordance with His promise."
- Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing, p. 103.

A Channel of Communion D Monday

April 21
3. When the ceremonial system given the children of Israel by the hand of
Moses concluded, what form of ministry for guilt remained necessary in the
Christian era? Acts 5:29-32.

" . . . As the apostles set forth the glory of the Only-Begotten of the Father,
three thousand souls were convicted. They were made to see themselves as they
were, sinful and polluted, and Christ as their friend and Redeemer. Christ was lifted
up, Christ was glorified, through the power of the Holy Spirit resting upon men. By
faith these believers saw Him as the One who had borne humiliation, suffering, and
death that they might not perish but have everlasting life. The revelation of Christ by

-14 -
the Spirit brought to them a realizing sense of His power and majesty, and they
stretched forth their hands to Him by faith, saying, 'I believe.' "-Christ's Object Lessons, p.
120.

4. During the Levitical system, personal and general instruction was given by
the Lord's messengers, as directed by the spirit of prophecy, so what
guidelines were necessary in New Testament times? 1 Corinthians 14:12-17,
32,33,40.

"In all our religious services we should seek to conduct ourselves in a way that
will edify others, working as much as lies in our power for the perfection of the
church." -Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 244.

A Connection with Heaven D Tuesday

April 22
5. How alone is it possible to commune with God? What became necessary
when sin separated man from God? 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 12:24, 28.

"God is approached through Jesus Christ, the Mediator, the only way through
which He forgives sins. God cannot forgive sins at the expense of His justice, His
holiness, and His truth. But He does forgive sins and that fully. There are no sins He
will not forgive in and through the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the sinner's only hope,
and if he rests here in sincere faith, He is sure of pardon and that full and free. There
is only one channel and that is accessible to all, and through that channel a rich and
abundant forgiveness awaits the penitent, contrite soul and the darkest sins are
forgiven." - The SDA Bible Commentary, [E.G. White Comments] vol. 7, pp. 912, 913.

6. Although the formal prayers were regulated by time-morning and evening,

the seasons and feast days-what should be expected of the spontaneous
spirit-inspired prayers of the true Christian? Philippians 4:6; Colossians
4:2,3.

"Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from
God flows into our life; and from our life, purity and holiness flow back to God."
-Steps to Christ, p. 98.

Help of the Holy Spirit D Wednesday

April 23
7. Although throughout the Jewish dispensation the personality and office of
the Holy Spirit was largely unrecognized, what difference is to be known in
the Christian era? Romans 8:26.

"Faithful to His promise, the Divine One, exalted in the heavenly courts, im-
parted of His fullness to His followers on earth. His enthronement at God's right hand
was signalized by the outpouring of the Spirit upon His disciples.
"By the work of Christ these disciples had been led to feel their need of the Spirit;
under the Spirit's teaching they received their final preparation and went forth to
their lifework." -Education, p. 95.

8. How is the purpose and meaning of the believer's prayer made to harmonize
with the divine purposes and thus be effectual? Romans 8:26,27.

-15 -
"But I was shown that it is the privilege of Christians to obtain strength from God
to hold every precious gift. Fervent and effectual prayer will be regarded in heaven.
When the servants of Christ take the shield of faith for their defense, and the sword of
the Spirit for war, there is danger in the enemy's camp, and something must be done.
Persecution and reproach only wait for those who are endowed with power from on
high to call tl:em into action. When the truth in its simplicity and strength prevails
among believers, and is brought to bear against the spirit of the world, it will be evi-
dent that there is no concord between Christ and Belial. The disciples of Christ must
be living examples of the life and spirit of their Master." - Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 407, 408.

The Power ofPrayer o Thursday

April 24
9. What is the indestructible bond joining believers and churches even under
the most adverse circumstances? What is said of the prayer of the just? Ephe-
sians 6:17-19; James 5:6 (last part).

"Prayer will accomplish wonders for those who give themselves to prayer,
watching thereunto. God desires us all to be in a waiting, hopeful position." -Counsels to
Parents, Teachers, and Students, pp. 479, 480.

10. What makes the prayer ministry of the saints effectual until the close of the
Gospel? Revelation 8:2-4.

"As the high priest sprinkled the warm blood upon the mercy-seat while the
fragrant cloud of incense ascended before God, so, while we confess our sins and
plead the efficacy of Christ's atoning blood, our prayers are to ascend to heaven,
fragrant with the merits of our Saviour's character. Notwithstanding our unwor-
thiness, we are to remember that there is One who can take away sin, and who is will-
ing and anxious to save the sinner...." -Review and Herald, September 29,1896.

THE PRAYER OF FAITH

Belief in God and His promises is faith and is a condition for answered prayer and
the enemy tries to defeat this faith by suggesting doubts

KEY TEXT: "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye
may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much"(James 5:16).

Faith D Sunday
April 27
1. What in the prayer of the believer makes it effective? What did the life of
Enoch demonstrate? Hebrews 11:6.

"By the translation of Enoch the Lord designed to teach an important lesson.
There was danger that men would yield to discouragement, because of the fearful
results of Adam's sin. Many were ready to exclaim, 'What profit is it that we have
feared the Lord and have kept His ordinances, since a heavy curse is resting upon the
race, and death is the portion of us all?' But the instructions which God gave to Adam,
and which were repeated by Seth, and exemplified by Enoch, swept away the gloom
and darkness, and gave hope to man, that as through Adam came death, so through
the promised Redeemer would come life and immortality. Satan was urging upon
men the belief that there was no reward for the righteous or punishment for the wick-
ed, and that it was impossible for men to obey the divine statutes. But in the case of
Enoch, God declares 'that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently
seek Him.' Hebrews 11:6. . . .
"The godly character of this prophet represents the state of holiness which must
be attained by those who shall be 'redeemed from the earth' (Revelation 14:3) at the
time of Christ's second advent." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 88, 89.

2. Why is it impossible to please God when faith is lacking? What is the op-
posite of faith? James 1:3-7.

"God's way is always the right and the prudent way. He always brings honor to
His name. Man's only security against rash, ambitious movements is to keep the
heart in harmony with Christ Jesus. Man's wisdom is untrustworthy. Man is fickle,
filled with self-esteem, pride, and selfishness. Let the workers doing God's service
trust wholly in the Lord. Then the leaders will reveal that they are willing to be led,
not by human wisdom, which is as useless to lean upon as is a broken reed, but by the
wisdom of the Lord, who has said: [James 1:5, 6 quoted]." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 106.
"But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is
secure against presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith
claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims
the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have
led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His commands. Presumption
led them to transgress His law, believing that His great love would save them from

-17 -
the consequence of their sin. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without
complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has its
foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures."- The Desire of Ages, p. 126.

Doubt to be Replaced by Belief o Monday

April 28
3. When Jesus was teaching the blind, the lame, and the sick what did He em-
phasize? Mark 9:23, 24.

" . . . [James 1:6-8 quoted]. God is behind every promise, and we cannot
dishonor Him more than by questioning and hesitating, by asking and not believing,
and then by talking doubt. If you do not immediately receive what you have asked for, •
will you go on in sullenness and unbelief? Believe; believe that God will do just what
He has promised. Keep your prayers ascending, and watch, work, and wait. Fight the
good fight of faith. . . ." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 300.
" ... All things are possible with God, and by faith we may lay hold on His
power. But faith is not sight; faith is not feeling; faith is not reality. 'Faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' To abide in faith is to
put aside feeling and selfish desires, to walk humbly with the Lord, to appropriate His
promises, and apply them to all occasions, believing that God will work out His own
plans and purposes in your heart and life by the sanctification of your character; it is
to rely entirely, to trust implicitly, upon the faithfulness of God. If this course is
followed, others will see the special fruits of the Spirit manifested in the life and
character." -Ibid., pp. 341,342.

4. What gift of God, not appreciated by the Jews, prevented them from entering
into all the Gospel privileges? What lesson should we learn from this?
Hebrews 4: 1, 2.

" . . . No intangible principle, no impersonal essence or mere abstraction, can

satisfy the needs and longings of human beings in this life of struggle with sin and sor-
row and pain. It is not enough to believe in law and force, in things that have no pity,
and never hear the cry for help. We need to know of an almighty arm that will hold us
up, of an infinite Friend that pities us. We need to clasp a hand that is warm, to trust
in a heart full of tenderness. And even so God has in His word revealed Himself."
-Education, p. 133.

Faith and Righteousness o Tuesday

April 29
5. What part does righteousness have with prayer? How is righteousness
received? James 5:16; Romans 1:17.

"The conditions of obtaining mercy of God are simple and just and reasonable.
The Lord does not require us to do some grievous thing in order that we may have the
forgiveness of sin. We need not make long and wearisome pilgrimages, or perform
painful penances, to commend our souls to the God of heaven or to expiate our trans-
gression; but he that confesseth and forsaketh his sin shall have mercy." -Steps to
Christ, p. 37.

6. When Christ prayed in Gethsemane, what elements 'of faith were evident?
Luke 22:41, 42.

-18 -
"I saw how this grace [true godliness] could be obtained. Go to your closet, and
there alone plead with God: 'Create in me a clean heart, 0 God; and renew a right
spirit within me.' Be in earnest, be sincere. Fervent prayer availeth much. Jacoblike,
wrestle in prayer. Agonize. Jesus, in the garden, sweat great drops of blood; you must
make an effort. Do not leave your closet until you feel strong in God; then watch, and
just as long as you watch and pray you can keep these evil besetments under, and the
grace of God can and will appear in you." - Testimon' , o. ,p. 5'l'-"

Faith Makes Prayer Real D Wednesday

April 30
7. To what intellectual and physical intensity did the faith of Jesus lead him?
Luke 22:44.

"Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend. The eye of faith will
discern God very near, and the suppliant may obtain precious evidence of the divine
love and care for him. But why is it that so many prayers are never answered? Says
David: 'I cried unto Him with my mouth, and He was extolled with my tongue. If I
regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.' By another prophet the Lord
gives us the promise: 'Ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me
with all your heart.' Again, he speaks of some who 'have not cried unto Me with their
heart.' Such petitions are prayers of form, lip service only, which the Lord does not
accept:" - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 533.
"Communion with God imparts to the soul an intimate knowledge of His will. But
many who profess the faith know not what true conversion is. They have no ex-
perience in communion with the' Father through Jesus Christ, and have never felt the
power of divine grace to sanctify the heart. Praying and sinning, sinning and praying,
their lives are full of malice, deceit, envy, jealousy, and self-love. The prayers of this
class are an abomination to God. True prayer engages the energies of the soul and af-
fects the life. He who thus pours out his wants before God feels the emptiness of
everything else under heaven... ." -Ibid., pp. 534, 535.
8. What promises are associated with faith and prayer? What is our part? 2
Peter 1:4; 2 Corinthians 7:1, 9, 10.

" 'The prince of this world cometh,' said Jesus, 'and hath nothing in Me.' John
14:30. There was in Him nothing that responded to Satan's sophistry. He did not con-
sent to sin. Not even by a thought did He yield to temptation. So it may be with us.
Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the in-
dwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature.
So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God
reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of
Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character." - The Desire of Ages, p. 123.
Trials Strengthen Faith D Thursday
May 1
9. What is used by God to strengthen the faith of those who will be able to wear
the white robes? What will characterize their prayers? Revelation 7:13, 14.

"The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure
weariness, delay, and hunger-a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The
period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because
he was persevering and determined. His victory is an'evidence of the power of impor-
tunate prayer. All who will lay hold of God's promises, as he did, and be as earnest

-19 -
and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to
deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not
obtain it. Wrestling with God-how few know what it is! How few have ever had their
souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every power is on the stretch.
When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how
few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God." - The Great Controversy, p. 621.

10. What power helped Peter when he was sorely shaken by Satan? Luke 22:31,
32.

"It was in sleeping when Jesus bade him watch and pray that Peter had prepared

the way for his great sin. All the disciples, by sleeping in that critical hour, sustained a
great loss. Christ knew the fiery ordeal through which they were to pass. He knew ,
how Satan would work to paralyze their senses that they might be unready for the
trial. Therefore it was that He gave them warning. Had those hours in the garden
been spent in watching and prayer, Peter would not have been left to depend upon his
own feeble strength. He would not have denied his Lord. Had the disciples watched
with Christ in His agony, they would have been prepared to behold His suffering upon
the cross.... " - The Desire of Ages. pp. 713, 714.
"A tide of memories rushed over him. The Saviour's tender mercy, His kindness
and long-suffering, His gentleness and patience toward His erring disciples,-all was
remembered. He recalled the caution, [Luke 22:31, 32 quoted]. ... " -Ibid., p. 713.

a. Why is faith a prerequisite for answered prayer?

b. What is Satan's device to hinder faith?

c. What mutual relationship exists between prayer and faith?

d. What realization is the result of a living faith and makes prayer effective?

e. How do tests and trials strengthen faith?

*******
For further thought:

"If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. " Mark 9:23. It is faith that
connects us with heaven and brings us strength for coping with the powers of darkness. In Christ,
God has provided means for subduing every evil trait and resisting every temptation, however strong.
But many feel that they lack faith, and therefore they remain away from Christ. Let these souls, in
their helpless unworthiness, cast themselves upon the mercy of their compassionate Saviour. Look not
to self, but to Christ. He who healed the sick and cast out demons when He walked among men is still
the same mighty Redeemer. Then grasp His promises as leaves from the tree of life: "Him that com-
eth to Me I will in no wise cast out. " John 6:37. As you come to Him, believe that He accepts you,
because He has promised. You can never perish while you do this-never. "-The Ministry of Healing,

PRAYER DIRECTED BY THE HOLY

SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit as the representative of Christ to guide and direct into all truth
will also guide and make effective the prayers of believers in the last days

KEY TEXT: "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not
what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh in-
tercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Romans
8:26).

Helped by the Holy Spirit o Sunday

May 4
1. What was promised of Christ and with what reasoning did He establish this
before His critics? How do we know that our prayers also may be acceptable?
Isaiah 11:2; Matthew 12:28; Romans 8:26.

"Let the glorious conceptions of God possess your mind. Let your life be knit by
hidden links to the life of Jesus. He who commanded the light to shine out of darkness
is willing to shine in your heart, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God
in the face of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will take the things of God and show them
unto you, conveying them as a living power into the obedient heart. Christ will lead
you to the threshold of the Infinite. You may behold the glory beyond the veil, and
reveal to men the sufficiency of Him who ever liveth to make intercession for us."
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 149.

2. How does the Holy Spirit cooperate with Christ and the Father in assuring
" salvation? John 16:8-11.

"Jesus is officiating in the presence of God, offering up His shed blood, as it had
been a lamb slain. Jesus presents the oblation offered for every offense and every
shortcoming of the sinner.
"Christ, our Mediator, and the Holy Spirit are constantly interceding in man's
behalf, but the Spirit pleads not for us as does Christ who presents His blood, shed
from the foundation of the world; the Spirit works upon our hearts, drawing out
prayers and penitence, praise and thanksgiving. . . ." -The SDA Bible Commentary, [E.G.
White Comments] vol. 6, p. 1077.
"When Christ ascended to heaven, He ascended as our advocate. We always have
a friend at court. And from on high Christ sends His'representative to every nation,
kindred, tongue, and people. The Holy Spirit gives the divine anointing to all who
receive Christ.- The Christian Educator, August, 1897, p. 22." -Ibid., vol. 7a, p. 486.

Holy Spirit as Teacher 0 Monday
May 5
3. In the reformation brought by Nehemiah, who did the Lord reveal through
him was the Teacher in the wilderness sojourn? Nehemiah 9:18-20.

"From the beginning, God has been working by His Holy Spirit through human
instrumentalities for the accomplishment of His purpose in behalf of the fallen race.
This was manifest in the lives of the patriarchs. To the church in the wilderness also,
in the time of Moses, God gave His 'good Spirit to instruct them.' Nehemiah 9:20.
And in the days of the apostles He wrought mightily for His church through the agency •
of the Holy Spirit. The same power that sustained the patriarchs, that gave Caleb and
Joshua faith and courage, and that made the work of the apostolic church effective,
has upheld God's faithful children in every succeeding age. It was through the power

of the Holy Spirit that during the Dark Ages the Waldensian Christians helped to
prepare the way for the Reformation. It was the same power that made successful the
efforts of the noble men and women who pioneered the way for the establishment of
modern missions and for the translation of the Bible into the languages and dialects of
all nations and peoples."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 53.
4. In the reformation to be wrought in this sealing time, what is promised to in-
struct and keep believers from heresy and apostasy? 1 Corinthians 2:11-13.

"Paul realized that his sufficiency was not in himself, but in the presence of the
Holy Spirit, whose gracious influence filled his heart, bringing every thought into sub-
jection to Christ. He spoke of himself as 'always bearing about in the body the dying
of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.' 2
Corinthians 4:10. In the apostle's teachings Christ was the central figure. 'I live,' he
declared, 'yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.' Galatians 2:20. Self was hidden; Christ
was revealed and exalted."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 251.
In the Christian Era 0 Tuesday
May 6
5. Why is it utterly impossible to pray effectively and acceptably without the
aid of the Holy Spirit? 1 Corinthians 2:14-16; John 14:17.

" ... The religion that comes from God is the only religion that will lead to God.
In order to serve Him aright, we must be born of the divine Spirit. This will purify the
heart and renew the mind, giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. It
will give us a willing obedience to all His requirements. This is true worship. It is the
fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit every sincere prayer is indited,
and such prayer is acceptable to God. Wherever a soul reaches out after God, there
the Spirit's working is manifest, and God will reveal Himself to that soul. For such
worshipers He is seeking. He waits to receive them, and to make them His sons and
daughters." - The Desire of Ages, p. 189.
6. In the Christian era symbolized by seven prophetic churches (Rev. 2 and 3),
to whom should all look for guidance and instruction in prayer? Revelation
2:7,11,29; John 14:26.

"More than eighteen centuries have passed since the apostles rested from their
labors, but the history of their toils and sacrifices for Christ's sake is still among the
most precious treasures of the church. This history, written under the direction of the
Holy Spirit, was recorded in order that by it the followers of Christ in every age might
be impelled to greater zeal and earnestness in the cause of the Saviour.

-22 -
"The commiSSIOn that Christ gave to the disciples, they fulfilled. As these
messengers of the cross went forth to proclaim the gospel, there was suth a revela-
tion of the glory of God as had never before been witnessed by mortal man. By the co-
operation of the divine Spirit, the apostles did a work that shook the world. To every
nation was the gospel carried in a single generation." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 593.

Great Opportunities o Wednesday

May 7
7. By what prophetic promise was instruction given concerning prayer, par-
ticularly in the time of "the latter rain?" How can those who hope to have a
part in these promises become prepared? Joel 2:28, 29, 32.

"The truth is efficient, and through obedience its power changes the mind into
the image of Jesus. It is the truth as it is in Jesus that quickens the conscience and
transforms the mind; for it is accompanied to the heart by the Holy Spirit. There are
many, who, lacking spiritual discernment, take the bare letter of the word, and find
that unaccompanied by the Spirit of God, it quickens not the soul, it sanctifies not the
heart. One may be able to quote from the Old and the New Testament, may be
familiar with the commands and promises of the word of God; but unless the Holy
Spirit sends the truth home to the heart, enlightening the mind with divine light, no
soul falls upon the Rock and is broken; for it is the divine agency that connects the
soul with God. Without the enlightenment of the Spirit of God, we shall not be able to
discern truth from error, and shall fall under the masterful temptations and decep-
tions that Satan will bring upon the world.... " -Review and Herald, November 29, 1892.

8. What wonderful opportunity to experience the power and working of the Holy
Spirit were missed by the professed leaders of God's people in the days of
Peter and again in 1888? How may we be prepared to have part in such an ex-
perience when it is repeated in the last days? Acts 2:19,20.

"The great crisis is just before us. To meet its trials and temptations, and to per-
form its duties, will require persevering faith. But we may triumph gloriously; not one
watching, praying, believing soul will be ensnared by the enemy." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p.
404.

Opportunity or Opposition o Thursday

MayS
9. Although the Laodicean church is rejected because it feels no need, how
carefully should each individual recognize the need of the Holy Spirit, in
every prayer, and indeed, in every phase of life? Why has this become an in-
dividual concern? Revelation 3:18-20.

"In all true teaching the personal element is essential. Christ in His teaching
dealt with men individually. It was by personal contact and association that He train-
ed the Twelve. It was in private, often to but one listener, that He gave His most
precious instruction. To the honored rabbi at the night conference on the Mount of
Olives, to the despised woman at the well of Sychar, He opened His richest treasures;
for in these hearers He discerned the impressible heart, the open mind, the receptive
spirit. Even the crowd that so often thronged His steps was not to Christ an in-
discriminate mass of human beings. He spoke directly to every mind and appealed to
every heart. He watched the faces of His hearers, marked the lighting up of the

- 23-
countenance, the quick, responsive glance, which told that truth had reached the soul;
and there vibrated in His heart the answering chord of sympathetic joy." -Education, p.
231.

10. If the opportunity to accept the essential, indispensable aid and blessing of
the Holy Spirit in both prayer and decision is ignored, omitted or rejected,
what is inevitable? What may we learn from this warning? Isaiah 63:10.

" ... And now, notwithstanding the fact that they had repeatedly 'rebelled, and
vexed His Holy Spirit' (Isaiah 63:10), God once more, through the messages of His
prophet, was stretching out His hand to save. As a recognition of their co-operation
with His purpose, He was renewing His covenant that His Spirit should remain
among them; and He bade them, 'Fear not.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 576.

For Further Thought

The mind should not be left to wander at random upon every subject that the
adversary of souls may suggest. 'Girding up the loins ofyour mind, ' says the apostle Peter,
'Be sober,. . . not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts in . . . your ig-
norance: but like as He which called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of
living.' 1 Peter 1:13-15, R. V Says Paul, 'Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are
lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any
praise, think on these things.' Philippians 4:8: This will require earnest prayer and
unceasing watchfulness. We must be aided by the abiding influence of the Holy Spirit,
which will attract the mind upward, and habituate it to dwell on pure and holy
things. ... "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 460.

PRAYER IN JESUS' NAME

Men have sought many other ways and mediators to intercede for them, and even
so-called Christians do so, but all should show respect and reverence for the only
way to seek unlimited help

Two Prayers that were Effectual D Sunday

May 11
1. When the vast armies of Ethiopia threatened Israel, what attitude taken by
those in authority made the petition effective? 2 Chronicles 14:9-12.

"The prayer of Asa is one that every Christian believer may fittingly offer. We
fight in a warfare, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers,
and against spiritual wickedness in high places. See Ephesians 6:12. In life's conflict
we must meet evil agencies that have arrayed themselves against the right. Our hope
is not in man, but in the living God. With full assurance of faith we may expect that
He will unite His omnipotence with the efforts of human instrumentalities, for the
glory of His name. Clad with the armor of His righteousness, we may gain the victory
over every foe." -Prophets and Kings. p. 111.

2. What truth, in the heart of David, did he want Goliath and all the soldiers in
both armies to know? 1 Samuel 17:45-47.

"We must not only pray in Christ's name, but by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit. This explains what is meant when it is said that the Spirit 'maketh intercession
for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered.' Rom. 8:26. Such prayer God delights
to answer. When with earnestness and intensity we breathe a prayer in the name of
Christ, there is in that very intensity a pledge from God that He is about to answer our
prayer 'exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.' Eph. 3:20." -Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 147.

"The Lord commands by the same prophet [Isaiah]: 'Bind up the testimony. seal
the law among My disciples.' Isaiah 8:16. The seal of God's law is found in the fourth
commandment. This only, of all the ten, brings to view both the name and the title of
the Lawgiver. It declares Him to be the Creator of the heavens and the earth. and thus
shows His claim to reverence and worship above all others. Aside from this precept,
there is nothing in the Decalogue to show by whose authority the law is given. When

- 25-
the Sabbath was changed by the papal power, the seal was taken from the law. The
disciples of Jesus are called upon to restore it by exalting the Sabbath of the fourth
commandment to its rightful position as the Creator's memorial and the sign of His
authority." - The Great Controversy, p. 452.
4. What obedience and respect in manner of approach and address is due to the
office and authority of the great Lawgiver? How will this consciousness be
revealed in the daily life? Isaiah 22:22; James 4:12; Romans 14:7-9.
"The Christian life is not to be a haphazard, emotional life. True Christian in-
fluence, exerted for the accomplishment of the work God has appointed, is a precious
agency, and it must not be united with politics, or bound up in a confederacy with
unbelievers. God is to be the center of attraction. Every mind that is worked by the
Holy Spirit will be satisfied with Him." -Gospel Workers, pp. 395, 396.

5. What significance was attached to the place where Abraham offered Isaac?
Genesis 22:14 (margin).
"Then Abraham saw 'a ram caught in a thicket,' and quickly bringing the new
victim, he offered it 'in the stead of his son.' In his joy and gratitude Abraham gave a
new name to the sacred spot-'Jehovah-jireh,' 'the Lord will provide.' "-Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 153.

6. What in the exp'erience of Gideon made it necessary for "the angel of the
Lord" to give him an assurance? What lesson should be learned from this for
modern times? Judges 6:22-24.
"Holy angels have been displeased and disgusted with the irreverent manner in
which many have used the name of God, the great Jehovah. Angels mention that
sacred name with the greatest awe, ever veiling their faces when they speak the name
of God; and the name of Christ is so sacred to them that they speak it with the
greatest reverence. But how opposite the spirit and influence attending the 1854 time
movement. Some who are still under the same influence speak of God as they would
of a horse or of any other commonplace thing. In their prayers they use the words
God Almighty in a very common and irreverent manner. Those who do this have no
sense of the exalted character of God, of Christ, or of heavenly things.
"I was shown that when God sent His angels anciently to minister or com-
municate to individuals, and these persons learned that they had seen and talked with
an angel, they were struck with awe and were afraid that they should die. They had so l
exalted views of the terrible majesty and power of God that they thought it would 1
destroy them to be brought into close connection with one direct from His holy
presence. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 410.

7. What is recorded of the One in whom salvation and security become
available through prayer? What is the believer privileged to reveal to the
world? Jeremiah 23:5,6; Acts 4:12.
"Those who today teach unpopular truths need not be discouraged if at times
they meet with no more favorable reception, even from those who claim to be Chris-
tians, than did Paul and his fellow workers from the people among whom they
labored. The messengers of the cross must arm themselves with watchfulness and

- 26-
prayer, and move forward with faith and courage, working always in the name of
Jesus. They must exalt Christ as man's mediator in the heavenly sanctuary, the One
in whom all the sacrifices of the Old Testamellt dispensation centered, and through
whose atoning sacrifice the transgressors of God's law may find peace and pardon."
- The Acts 0/ the Apostles, p. 230.

8. When Moses was sent to deliver Israel, what was he to give as evidence of his
authority? What power inherent in this name was expected to be recognized
by the people then, even as now? Of what is sacred history a witness? Exodus
. 3:13-15; Psalm 62:11 .

• ". . . In the records of sacred history were traced the footsteps of Jehovah. The
great truths set forth by the types in the service of the sanctuary were brought to
view, and faith grasped the central object of all that system-the Lamb of God, that
was to take away the sin of the world. A spirit of devotion was cherished. Not only
were the students taught the duty of prayer, but they were taught how to pray, how to
approach their Creator, how to exercise faith in Him, and how to understand and obey
the teachings 'of His Spirit. Sanctified intellect brought forth from the treasure house
of God things new and old, and the Spirit of God was manifested in prophecy and
sacred song. "-Education, p. 47.
Pray in His Name 0 Thursday
May 15
9. By what special name was the Lord known to Israel? What does the Scrip-
ture tell of this name? Exodus 6:1·3; Psalm 111:9.
"Another precious grace that should be carefully cherished is reverence. True
reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of
His presence. With this sense of the Unseen the heart of every child should be deeply
impressed. The hour and place of prayer and the services of public worship the child
should be taught to regard as sacred because God is there. And as reverence is
manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it will be deepened."
-Education, pp. 242,243.
"Reverence should be shown also for the name of God. Never should that name
be spoken lightly or thoughtlessly. Even in prayer its frequent or needless repetition
should be avoided. 'Holy and reverend is His name.' Psalm 111:9. Angels, as they
speak it, veil their faces. With what reverence should we, who are fallen and sinful,
take it upon our lips!" -Ibid.
10. While there are numerous cults and religions claiming to believe in and wor-
ship Him, how only is human prayer and petition acceptable in Heaven? John
14:6; Acts 4:12.
"But to pray in Christ's name means much. It means that we are to accept His
character, manifest His spirit, and work His works. The Saviour's promise is given
on condition. 'If ye love Me,' He says, 'keep My commandments.' He saves men, not
in sin, but from sin; and those who love Him will show their love by obedience."-The
Desire 0/ Ages, p. 668.
"The truths of the third angel's message have been presented by some as a dry
theory; but in this message is to be presented Christ the Living One. He is to be
revealed as the first and the last, as the I AM, the Root and the Offspring of David,
and the bright and morning Star. Through this message the character of God in Christ
is to be manifested to the world. . . ." - Testimonies, vol.' 6, p. 20.

POSTURE IN PRAYER

While the Christian who realizes his constant dependence upon the Lord cannot
be on his knees all the time, he should always be in the attitude of prayer

KEY TEXT: "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ" (Ephesians 3:14).

Basic Principle 0 Sunday

May 18
1. Why is it important to show by our posture reverence for God? What custom
in the time of Moses was he instructed to follow in the presence of God?
Psalm 89:7; Exodus 3:5, 6.

"True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a
realization of His presence. With this sense of the Unseen, every heart should be
deeply impressed. The hour and place of prayer are sacred, because God is there.
And as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it
will be deepened...." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 48, 49.
". . . Moses saw a bush in flames, branches, foliage, and trunk, all burning, yet
seeming not to be consumed. He drew near to view the wonderful sight, when a voice
from out of the flame called him by name. With trembling lips he answered, 'Here am
1.' He was warned not to approach irreverently: . . .
"Humility and reverence should characterize the deportment of all who come in-
to the presence of God. In the name of Jesus we may come before Him with con-
fidence, but we must not approach Him with the boldness of presumption, as though
He were on a level with ourselves. There are those who address the great and all-
powerful and holy God, who dwelleth in light unapproachable, as they would address
an equal, or even an inferior. , . ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 251, 252.

2. What revelations should guide God's children in their deportment when

coming into His presence? Psalms 95:3-6; 111:9 (last part); Isaiah 6:1-3.

"Angels, when they speak that name, veil their faces. With what reverence, then,
should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!" -Prophets and Kings, p. 49.
"Christ's followers today should guard against the tendency to lose the spirit of
reverence and godly fear. The Scriptures teach men how they should approach their
Maker-with humility and awe, through faith in a divine Mediator. The psalmist has
declared: [Psalm 95:3-6 quoted].
"Both in public and in private worship it is our privilege to bow on our knees
before God when we offer our petitions to Him." -Ibid., p. 48.

Kneeling, Bowing Down o Monday

May 19
3. Contrary to what many think, what attitude was adopted by Solomon for his
prayer at the dedication of the temple? 2 Chronicles 6:12, 13.

- 28-
"Solomon then knelt upon the platform, and in the hearing of all the people of-
fered the dedicatory prayer. Lifting his hands toward heaven, while the congregation
were bowed with their faces to the ground, the king pleaded: [2 Chronicles 6:14
quoted]." -Prophets and Kings, p. 40.

4. What Scriptures indicate that kneeling was on both knees and not only on one
knee as is the custom in some military ceremonials? What experience in public
meeting shows the importance of kneeling for prayer? Ezra 9:5; Ephesians 3:14.

". . . One who has been educated for about five years in Battle Creek was asked
• to lead in prayer before Sister White should speak to the people. But as I beheld him
standing upright upon his feet while his lips were about to open in prayer to God, my
• soul was stirred within me to give him an open rebuke. Calling him by name, I said,
'Get down upon your knees.' This is the proper position always." -Selected Messages, book
2, p. 311.
"Both in public and private worship it is our duty to bow down upon our knees
before God when we offer our petitions to Him. This act shows our dependence upon
God." -Ibid., p. 312.

True Reverence and Submission o Tuesday

May 20
5. What examples are recorded concerning the practice of the apostles in the
early Christian church? Acts 7:60; 9:40.

". . . The position in prayer should be perfectly natural. Long praying wearies,
and is not in accordance with the gospel of Christ. Half or even quarter of an hour is
altogether too long. A few minutes' time is long enough to bring your case before God
and tell Him what you want; and you can take the people with you and not weary
them out and lessen their interest in devotion and prayer. They may be refreshed and
strengthened, instead of exhausted."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 617.

6. What example was set by a faithful man of God in public service? How should
natural talents be used? Daniel 6:10.

". . . Your mind was given that you might understand how to work. Your eyes
were given that you might be keen to discern your God-given opportunities. Your
ears are to listen for the commands of God. Your knees are to bow three times a day
in heartfelt prayer. . . ." - Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 298.

• Christ's Example o Wednesday

May 21
7. What example is set for us by the Lord? Luke 22:41.

"In a life wholly devoted to the good of others, the Saviour found it necessary to
withdraw from the thoroughfares of travel and from the throng that followed Him day
after day. He must turn aside from a life of ceaseless activity and contact with human
needs, to seek retirement and unbroken communion with His Father. As one with us,
a sharer in our needs and weaknesses, He was wholly dependent upon God, and in the
secret place of prayer He sought divine strength, that He might go forth braced for
duty and trial. . . ."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 362, 363.

8. What posture beside kneeling has been acceptable before the Lord on special
occasions? Numbers 16:22; Matthew 26:39.

- 29-
"Behold Him contemplating the price to be paid for the human soul. In His agony
He clings tothe cold ground, as if to prevent Himself from being drawn farther from
God. The chilling dew of night falls upon His prostrate form, but He heeds it not.
From His pale lips comes the bitter cry, '0 My Father, if it be possible, let this cup
pass from Me.' Yet even now He adds, 'Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou
wilt.' "- The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 687.

The Attitude ofPrayer D Thursday

May 22
9. What example do we have of prayer when it was not practical to kneel? What
lesson may be learned form this in harmony with apostolic instruction? Ne-
hemiah 2:4; Romans 12:12.

"God in His providence does not permit us to know the end from the beginning;
but He gives us the light of His Word to guide us as we pass along, and bids us to
keep our minds stayed upon Jesus. Wherever we are, whatever our employment, our
hearts are to be uplifted to God in prayer. This is being instant in prayer. We need not
wait until we can bow upon our knees, before we pray. On one occasion, when
Nehemiah came in before the king, the king asked why he looked so sad, and what re-
quest he had to make. But Nehemiah dared not answer at once. Important interests
were at stake. The fate of a nation hung upon the impression that should then be
made upon the monarch's mind; and Nehemiah darted up a prayer to the God of
heaven, before he dared to answer the king. The result was that he obtained all that
he asked or even desired." -The SDA Bible Commentary, [E.G. White Comments] vol. 3, p. 1136.
"There is no time or place in which it is inappropriate to offer up a petition to
God. There is nothing that can prevent us from lifting up our hearts in the spirit of
earnest prayer. In the crowds of the street, in the midst of a business engagement, we
may send up a petition to God and plead for divine guidance, as did Nehemiah when
he made his request before King Artaxerxes. A closet of communion may be found
wherever we are. We should have the door of the heart open continually and our in-
vitation going up that Jesus may come and abide as a heavenly guest in the
souL" -Steps to Christ, p. 99.

10. When the believer is converted and given a clean heart, how can he keep it
clean and acceptable to God? 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

"When the soul has been cleansed, it is the duty of the Christian to keep it
undefiled. Many seem to think that the religion of Christ does not call for the aban-
donment of daily sins, the breaking loose from habits which have held the soul in
bondage. They renounce some things condemned by the conscience, but they fail to •
represent Christ in the daily life. They do not bring Christlikeness into the home.
They do not show a thoughtful care in their choice of words. Too often, fretful, impa-
tient words are spoken, words which stir the worst passions of the human heart. Such
ones need the abiding presence of Christ in the soul. Only in His strength can they
keep guard over the words and actions.
"In the work of heart-keeping we must be instant in prayer, unwearied in peti-
tioning the throne of grace for assistance. Those who take the name of Christian
should come to God in earnestness and humility, pleading for help. The Saviour has
told us to pray without ceasing. The Christian can not always be in the position of
prayer, but his thoughts and desires can always be upward. Our self-confidence
would vanish, did we talk less and pray more." - The SDA Bible Commentary, [E.G. White Com-
ments] vol. 3, p. 1157.

For further thought:

"Worldly policy and the undeviating principles of righteousness do not blend into each other im-
perceptibly, like the colors of the rainbow. Between the two a broad, clear line is drawn by the eternal
God. The likeness of Christ stands out as distinct from that of Satan as midday in contrast with mid-
night. And only those who live the life of Christ are His coworkers. If one sin is cherished in the soul,
or one wrong practice retained in the life, the whole being is contaminated. The man becomes an in-
strument of unrighteousness. "-The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 313.

PRAYER-POWER
BY THE MEDIATION OF CHRIST

The enemy of souls is continually seeking to divert men from the only Mediator
to idols, images, prophets, saints, and even the mother of Jesus-who cannot help

KEY TEXT: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts

Christ, the Only Mediator D Sunday

May 25
1. In all societies and in all ages men have sought spiritual help and how did
Christ promise to fill that need? What is understood by the term "mediator?"
John 16:23,24; Job 9:33 (K.J.V. margin).

"Weare living in perilous times. Seventh-day Adventists are professedly the

commandment-keeping people of God; but they are losing their devotional spirit. This
spirit of reverence for God teaches men how to approach their Maker-with sacred-
ness and awe through faith, not in themselves, but in a Mediator. ..." -Selected Messages,
book 2, pp. 314, 315.
"The highest angel in heaven had not the power to pay the ransom for one lost
soul. Cherubim and seraphim have only the glory with which they are endowed by the
Creator as His creatures, and the reconciliation of man to God could be accomplished
only through a mediator who was equal with God, possessed of attributes that would
dignify, and declare him worthy to treat with the infinite God in man's behalf, and
also represent God to a fallen world. Man's substitute and surety must have man's
nature, a connection with the human family whom he was to represent, and, as God's
ambassador, he must partake of the divine nature, have a connection with the In-
finite, in order to manifest God to the world, and be a mediator between God and
man." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 257.

2. How specific and clear is the Lord's promise that He will mediate requests,
and what makes such requests acceptable? John 16:24-26.

"There are those who have known the pardoning love of Christ and who really
desire to be children of God, yet they realize that their character is imperfect, their
life faulty, and they are ready to doubt whether their hearts have been renewed by the
Holy Spirit. To such I would say, Do not draw back in despair. We shall often have to
bow down and weep at the feet of Jesus because of our shortcomings and mistakes,
but we are not to be discouraged. Even if we are overcome by the enemy, we are not
cast off, not forsaken and rejected of God. No; Christ is at the right hand of God, who
also maketh intercession for us. Said the beloved John, 'These things write I unto
you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous.' 1 John 2:1. .. ." -Steps to Christ, p. 64.

- 32-
No Other Mediator D Monday
May 26
3. As a warning against human and idol mediators, what strong warnings did
the apostle Paul leave? Ephesians 2: 18; 1 Timothy 2:5.

"We have great victories to gain, and a heaven to lose if we do not gain them.
The carnal heart must be crucified; for its tendency is to moral corruption, and the
end thereof is death. Nothing but the life-giving influences of the gospel can help the
soul. Pray that the mighty energies of the Holy Spirit, with all their quickening,
recuperative, and transforming power, may fall like an electric shock on the palsy-
stricken soul, causing every nerve to thrill with new life, restoring the whole man
from his dead, earthly, sensual state to spiritual soundness. You will thus become par-
takers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through
lust; and in your souls will be reflected the image of Him by whose stripes you are
healed." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 267.

4. While much of the ritual and ceremony of worship can be helpful, what is in-
dispensable? Isaiah 55:6, 7.

"There will be some terrible falls by those who think they stand firm because
they have the truth, but they have it not as it is in Jesus. A moment's carelessness
may plunge a soul into irretrievable ruin. One sin leads to the second, and the second
prepares the way for the third, and so on. We must, as faithful messengers of God,
plead with Him constantly to be kept by His power. If we swerve a single inch from
duty, we are in danger of following on in a course of sin that will end in perdition.
There is hope for everyone of us, but only in one way, and that is by binding
ourselves to Christ, and exerting every energy to attain to the perfection of His
character."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 540.

Divine Power Waits D Tuesday

May 27

5. While the suppliant may be highly intelligent, or very simply educated, what
is necessary for beneficial prayer? What may be expected as a result? Isaiah
55:8-11; Jeremiah 29:13.

"The life of Christ's disciples is to be like His, a series of uninterrupted victories,

not seen to be such here, but recognized as such in the great hereafter." - Testimonies.
vol. 6, p. 307.

6. What should the truly repentant believer in the mediation of Christ know
concerning his prayer? Isaiah 65:24.

"It is when we come into difficult places that He reveals His power and wisdom
in answer to humble prayer. Have confidence in Him as a· prayer-hearing, prayer-
answering God. He will reveal Himself to you as One who can help in every emergen-
cy. He who created man, who gave him his wonderful physical, mental, and spiritual
faculties, will not withhold that which is necessary to slistain the life He has given. He
who has given us His word-the leaves of the tree of life-will not withhold from us a
knowledge of how to provide food for His needy children."- The Ministry ofHealing, p. 199.

Mediation Will Cease D Wednesday
May 28
7. What must the suppliant do if any heartfelt need is to be realized? What must
he believe? Luke 11:9-13; Romans 3:24-26.

"The promises of God are full and abundant, and there is no need for anyone to
depend upon humanity for strength. To all that call upon Him, God is near to help and
succor. And He is greatly dishonored when, after inviting our confidence, we turn
from Him-the only One who will not misunderstand us, the only One who can give
unerring counsel-to men who in their human weakness are liable to lead us
astray."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 381, 382.
8. Because the Lord has His program, and probation will close according to the
divine purpose and prophecies, what should be remembered concerning
Christ's mediatorial service? Matthew 25:10; Revelation 8:5.

"When the work of investigation shall be ended, when the cases of those who in
all ages have professed to be followers of Christ have been examined and decided,
then, and not till then, probation will close, and the door of mercy will be shut. Thus
in the one short sentence, 'They that were ready went in with Him to the marriage:
and the door was shut,' we are carried down through the Saviour's final ministration,
to the time when the great work for man's salvation shall be completed." -The Great
Controversy, p. 428.

The Mediatorial Work Closed D Thursday

May 29

9. As Christ does not come again to earth when human probation closes, by
what means of grace will the sealed ones survive the time of the judgments?
Psalm 91:8-15.

". . . The great mass of the world will reject God's mercy, and will be overwhelm-
ed in swift and irretrievable ruin. But those who heed the warning shall dwell 'in the
secret place of the Most High,' and 'abide under the shadow of the Almighty.' His truth
shall be their shield and buckler. For them is the promise, 'With long life will I satisfy
him, and show him My salvation.' Psalm 91:1,4, 16."-PatriarchsandProphets, p.167.

10. When one individual realized that the end of his life was near, what did he
believe and do? What unsuccessful petition was made by another? Luke
23:42; 16:24 (first part).
"The rich man had not abandoned the idea that he was a child of Abraham, and in
his distress he is represented as calling upon him for aid. 'Father Abraham,' he prayed,
'have mercy on me.' He did not pray to God, but to Abraham. Thus he showed that he
placed Abraham above God, and that he relied on his relationship to Abraham for salva-
tion. The thief on the cross offered his prayer to Christ. 'Remember me when Thou
comest into Thy kingdom,' he said. (Luke 23:42.) And at once the response came, Veri-
ly I say unto thee today (as I hang on the cross in humiliation and suffering), thou shalt
be with Me in Paradise. But the rich man prayed to Abraham, and his petition was not
granted. Christ alone is exalted to be 'a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to
Israel, and forgiveness of sins.' Acts 5:31. 'Neither is there salvation in any other.' Acts
4:12." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 263, 264.

CONTINUE IN PRAYER

Much instruction and many examples have been given to show the continual
dependence upon the power of God and the need to maintain connection with
Him through prayer

KEY TEXT: "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all

Prayer when Reform is Needed D Sunday

June 1
1. Although circumstances lead many, even reformers, to pass whole days and
more without effective prayer, what instruction is given? 1 Chronicles
16:11; Luke 21:36; Ephesians 6:18.

"Every soul has the privilege of stating to the Lord his oWn special necessities
and to offer his individual thanksgiving for the blessings that he daily receives. But
the many long and spiritless, faithless prayers that are offered to God, instead of
being a joy to Him, are a burden. We need, oh, so much! clean, converted hearts. We
need to have our faith strengthened. [Matthew 7:7 quoted.] We need to educate
ourselves to trust in this word and to bring the light and grace of Christ into all our
works. We need to take hold of Christ and to retain our hold of Him until we know
that the power of His transforming grace is manifested in us. We must have faith in
Christ if we would reflect the divine character."- Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 278, 279.

2. What conditions hinder the answer to prayer? How was this illustrated in the
time when Jeremiah was calling the professed but backsliding people of God
to reform? Jeremiah 7:9-11, 15, 16.

"There is in Battle Creek a class that have the truth planted in the heart. It is to
them the power of God unto salvation. But unless the truth is enthroned in the heart,
and a thorough transition takes place from darkness to light, those who handle sacred
responsibilities are ministers of darkness, blind leaders of the blind. 'Clouds they are
without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit,
twice dead, plucked up by the roots.' God requires that every soul that names His
name shall have the truth enthroned in the heart. The time in which we live demands
it. Eternity demands it. Pure religion demands it."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 81.

Prayer in Time of Crisis D Monday

June 2
3. What experience came to the early church when they had recently lost one of
their leaders? What instruction did they follow? Acts 12:1-5; Matthew 7:7.

"While, upon various pretexts, the execution of Peter was being delayed until
after the Passover, the members of the church had time for deep searching of heart

- 35-
and earnest prayer. They prayed without ceasing for Peter, for they felt that he could
not be spared from the cause. They realized that they had reached a place where,
without the special help of God, the church of Christ would be destroyed."- The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 145.

4. What wonderful assistance came to the reform church of that time in

response to their sincere appeals for divine help? Acts 12:6-10.

"The day of Peter's execution was at last appointed, but still the prayers of the
believers ascended to heaven; and while all their energies and sympathies were called
out in fervent appeals for help, angels of God were watching over the imprisoned
apostle." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 145.
"It is the last night before the proposed execution. A mighty angel is sent from
heaven to rescue Peter. The strong gates that shut in the saint of God open without
the aid of human hands. The angel of the Most High passes through, and the gates
close noiselessly behind him. He enters the cell, and there lies Peter, sleeping the
peaceful sleep of perfect trust." -Ibid., p. 146.

5. When Peter reached the home of John Mark's mother, what did he find for
himself concerning prayer? Acts 12:11, 12.

"The apostle made his way at once to the house where his brethren were
assembled and where they were at that moment engaged in earnest prayer for
him." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 148.
6. Although prayer was made continually for Peter, what were the believers in
this company unable to believe? Acts 12:13-17.

"And Peter 'departed, and went into another place.' Joy and praise filled the
hearts of the believers, because God had heard and answered their prayers and had
delivered Peter from the hands of Herod." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 149.

Mutual Concern and Prayer 0 Wednesday

June 4
7. What instruction given the church in apostolic time, has particular lessons
for the remnant in this the "sealing time?" For whom especially should they
pray? Romans 15:30-33.

"Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience

testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson
of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith. The greatest victories to the church of Christ
or to the individual Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by
wealth or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience'
chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of
power." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 203.

8. What encouraging and sincere regard for each other was maintained by the
early church in the "Ephesus" period? Colossians 4:2-4, 12-16.

"Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from
God flows into our life; and from our life, purity and holiness flow back to God." -Steps
to Christ, p. 98.

Prayer in Last Days D Thursday
June 5
9. With what parable did the Lord seek to impress the need for perseverance in
prayer? What was shown the prophet about patient, persistent prayer under
the fifth seal? Luke 18:1-8; Revelation 6:9-11.

"Christ had been speaking of the period just before His second coming, and of
the perils through which His followers must pass. With special reference to that time
He related the parable 'to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to
faint.' "-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 164.
"The Lord says, 'Call upon Me in the day of trouble.' Ps. 50:15. He invites us to
present to Him our perplexities and necessities, and our need of divine help. He bids
us be instant in prayer. As soon as difficulties arise, we are to offer to Him our
sincere, earnest petitions. By our importunate prayers we give evidence of our strong
confidence in God. The sense of our need leads us to pray earnestly, and our heavenly
Father is moved by our supplications."-Ibid., p. 172.

10. Although correction and chastening may be necessary in the process of

reformation, what will result to all who continue in prayer? Psalm 30:2-5.

"The bright and cheerful side of our religion will be represented by all who are
daily consecrated to God. We should not dishonor God by the mournful relation of
trials that appear grievous. All trials that are received as educators will produce joy.
The whole religious life will be uplifting, elevating, ennobling, fragrant with good
words and works. The enemy is well pleased to have souls depressed, downcast,
mourning and groaning; he wants just such impressions made as to the effect of our
faith. But God designs that the mind shall take no low level. He desires every soul to
triumph in the keeping power of the Redeemer. ."-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 365, 366.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, June 14, 1980

PRAYER IN PRACTICE

To secure aU the benefits that the Lord provides through prayer, the approved
order and conditions must be followed both physically and spiritually

KEY TEXT: "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit
and in truth" (John 4:24).
Order in Prayer and Worship 0 Sunday
June 8
1. What governs all natural and social sciences and can be also expected to
govern the science of salvation? How was this made known in the acts of wor-
ship in the Old Testament times? Genesis 22:9; Leviticus 1:7, 8, 12; 1 Corin-
thians 14:40.
"God is a God of order. Everything connected with heaven is in perfect order;
subjection and thorough discipline mark the movements of the angelic host. Success
can only attend order and harmonious action. God requires order and system in His
work now no less than in the days of Israel. All who are working for Him are to labor
intelligently, not in a careless, haphazard manner. He would have His work done with
faith and exactness, that He may place the seal of His approval upon it." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 376.

2. When prayer is in reality "the breath of the soul" and our communication
with heaven, what influence will it have upon ordering the thoughts? What
human philosophy must be avoided? Philippians 4:8; Matthew 6:7.
" ... [Psalm 19:14 quoted.] As God works upon the heart by his Holy Spirit, man
must co-operate with him. The thoughts must be bound about, restricted, withdrawn
from branching out and contemplating things that will only weaken and defile the
soul. The thoughts must be pure, the meditations of the heart must be clean, if the
words of the mouth are to be words acceptable to Heaven, and helpful to your
associates...." -Review and Hera/d, June 12, 1888.
Prayer Must Be Directed Aright o Monday
June 9
3. As the need for prayer is implanted in the human heart by the Creator, so
what may be expected if it is satisfied according to the philosophies of men?
Jeremiah 7:17-20.
"Jeremiah called their attention repeatedly to the counsels given in Deuteron-
omy. More than any other of the prophets, he emphasized the teachings of the Mosaic
law and showed how these might bring the highest spiritual blessing to the nation and
to every individual heart. [Jeremiah 6:16 quoted.]" -Prophets and Kings, p. 411.
4. When a symbol given to encourage prayer and dependence upon divine help
became an idol, what step did the king of Israel have to take? Numbers
21:8,9; 2 Kings 18:4.

- 38-
"God designed to teach the people that they must approach Him with reverence
and awe, and in His own appointed manner. He cannot accept partial obedience. It
was not enough that in this solemn season of worship nearly everything was done as
He had directed. God has pronounced a curse upon those who depart from His com-
mandments, and put no difference between common and holy things. . . ." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 360.

Follow Correct Order D Tuesday

.. June 10
5. What makes it very clear that the Lord does not accommodate the principles
of true worship to "the customs of the people?" Jeremiah 10:3 (first part);
Mark 7:7; John 4:24.

"In early times the father was the ruler and priest of his own family, and he exer-
cised authority over his children, even after they had families of their own. His
descendants were taught to look up to him as their head, in both religious and secular
matters. This patriarchal system of government Abraham endeavored to perpetuate,
as it tended to preserve the knowledge of God. It was necessary to bind the members
of the household together, in order to build up a barrier against the idolatry that had
become so widespread and so deep-seated. Abraham sought by every means in his
power to guard the inmates of his encampment against mingling with the heathen and
witnessing their idolatrous practices, for he knew that familiarity with evil would in-
sensibly corrupt the principles. The greatest care was exercised to shut out every
form of false religion and to impress the mind with the majesty and glory of the living
God as the true object of worship." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 141.

6. What change is necessary in order for prayer and worship to be acceptable?

What is needed beside sincerity? 1 Corinthians 5:7, 8.

". . . Had the Israelites disregarded in any particular the directions given them,
had they neglected to separate their children from the Egyptians, had they slain the
lamb, but failed to strike the doorpost with blood, or had any gone out of their houses,
they would not have been secure. They might have honestly believed that they had
done all that was necessary, but their sincerity would not have saved them. All who
failed to heed the Lord's directions would lose their first-born by the hand of the
destroyer." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 278.

Desire and Action with Prayer D Wednesday

June 11
7. What should individuals, or a people professing to follow God, understand if
they are compromised or in apostasy in any way? Isaiah 1:10-15.

". . . Foreseeing the terrible temptations that attend prosperity and worldly
honor, God warned Solomon against the evil of apostasy and foretold the awful
results of sin. Even the beautiful temple that had just been dedicated, He declared,
would become 'a proverb and a byword among all nations' should the Israelites for-
sake 'the Lord God of their fathers' and persist in idolatry. [2 Chronicles 7] Verses 20,
22." -Prophets and Kings, p. 47.

8. What consciousness will preserve the power of prayer from the dangers of
presumption in motive, action or participation? What shows the sincerity of
the prayer? Isaiah 51:1, 4.

- 39-
"While you pray, dear youth, that you may not be led into temptation, remember
that your work does not end with the prayer. You must then answer your own prayer
as far as possible by resisting temptation, and leave that which you cannot do for
yourselves for Jesus to do for you. . . ."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 378.

Gratitude and Reverence D Thursday

June 12
9. When there has been a clear conviction of guilt followed by true confession,
what will follow spontaneously? Philippians 4:6.

"Peace comes with dependence on divine power. As fast as the soul resolves to
act in accordance with the light given, the Holy Spirit gives more light and strength.
The grace of the Spirit is supplied to co-operate with the soul's resolve, but it is not a
substitute for the individual exercise of faith. Success in the Christian life depends
upon the appropriation of the light that God has given. It is not an abundance of light
and evidence that makes the soul free in Christ; it is the rising of the powers and the
will and the energies of the soul to cry out sincerely, 'Lord, I believe; help Thou mine
unbelief.' "-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 518.
"It should not be difficult to remember that the Lord desires you to lay your
troubles and perplexities at His feet, and leave them there. Go to Him, saying: 'Lord,
my burdens are too heavy for me to carry. Wilt Thou bear them for me?' And He will
answer: 'I will take them. "With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee." I
will take your sins, and will give you peace. Banish no longer your self-respect; for I
have bought you with the price of My own blood. You are Mine. Your weakened will I
will strengthen. Your remorse for sin I will remove.' "-Ibid., pp. 519, 520.

.10. Even when there is a correct understanding of all the Biblical requirements
as to form, procedure, and routine for prayer, what is also indispensable?
Daniel 6:10; Psalm 55:16, 17.

"True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a
realization of His presence. With this sense of the Unseen, every heart should be
deeply impressed. The hour and place of prayer are sacred, because God is there.
And as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it
will be deepened. 'Holy and reverend is His name,' the psalmist declares. Psalm
111:9. Angels, when they speak that name, veil their faces. With what reverence,
then, should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!" -Prophets and Kings, pp.
48,49.

MIGHTY ANSWERS TO PRAYERS

When the children of God seek Him in faith, and it will vindicate His glory before
men and bring conviction, the Lord answers the humble prayer in mighty ways

tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel
will not forsake them" (Isaiah 41:17).

Help in Time ofNeed _0 Sunday

June 15
1. In contrast with the general trend to depend on human power and material
resources, what is the unfailing security for the believers? Psalms 37:5, 6;
33:13,14. .

"There are tower builders in our time. Infidels construct their theories from the
supposed deductions of science, and reject the revealed word of God. They presume
to pass sentence upon God's moral government; they despise His law and boast of the
sufficiency of human reason. Then, 'because sentence against an evil work is not ex-
ecuted speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.'
Ecclesiastes 8: 11." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 123, 124.

2. During the conquest of Canaan, although the Gibeonites had deceived Israel
and made peace with them, what danger still existed? Joshua 10:6.

"The submission of Gibeon to the Israelites filled the kings of Canaan with
dismay. Steps were at once taken for revenge upon those who had made peace with
the invaders. Under the leadership of Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, five of the
Canaanite kings entered into a confederacy against Gibeon. Their movements were
rapid. The Gibeonites were unprepared for defense, and they sent a message to
Joshua at Gilgal: [Joshua 10:6 quoted]. The danger threatened not the people of
Gibeon alone, but also Israel. This city commanded the passes to central and southern
Palestine, and it must be held if the country was to be conquered." -Patriarchs and Pro-
phets, p. 507.

Manifestations ofDivine Intervention o Monday

June 16
3. When the matter demanded immediate action, what counsel did Joshua seek
and what divine intervention helped them? Joshua 10:8·11.

"By marching all night he brought his forces before Gibeon in the morning.
Scarcely had the confederate princes mustered their armies about the city when
Joshua was upon them. The attack resulted in the utter discomfiture of the assailants.
The immense host fled before Joshua up the mountain pass to Bethhoron; and having
gained the height, they rushed down the precipitous descent upon the other side.
Here a fierce hailstorm burst upon them...." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 508.

- 41-
4. What great evidence of divine power was given when Joshua in humble con-
fidence asked in harmony with the expressed will of God? Joshua 10:12-14.

"The Spirit of God inspired Joshua's prayer, that evidence might again be given
of the power of Israel's God. Hence the request did not show presumption on the part
of the great leader. Joshua had received the promise that God would surely overthrow
these enemies of Israel, yet he put forth as earnest effort as though success depended
upon the armies of Israel alone. He did all that human energy could do, and then he
cried in faith for divine aid. The secret of success is the union of divine power with
human effort. Those who achieve the greatest results are those who rely most im-
plicitly upon the Almighty Arm. The man who commanded, 'Sun, stand thou still
upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon,' is the man who for hours lay
prostrate upon the earth in prayer in the camp at Gilgal. The men of prayer are the
men of power." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 509.

God's Omnipotent Power Revealed o Tuesday

June 17
5. When will the display of God's might and judgment by hail-stone devastation
be repeated? Revelation 16:17, 18.

"At His own will God summons the forces of nature to overthrow the might of
His enemies-'fire, and hail; snow, and vapor; stormy wind fulfilling His word.'
Psalm 148:8. When the heathen Amorites had set themselves to resist His pur-
poses, God interposed, casting down 'great stones from heaven' upon the ~nemies
of Israel. Weare told of a greater battle to take place in the closing scenes of
earth's history, when 'Jehovah hath opened His armory, and hath brought forth the
weapons of His indignation.' Jeremiah 50:25. 'Hast thou,' he inquires, 'entered into
the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have
reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?' Job
38:22, 23." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 509.

6. Upon what other occasion did God control the sun unusually, for His own
purpose, but in response to individual prayer? 2 Kings 20:2-6; 8-11.

"In the fertile valleys of the Tigris and the Euphrates there dwelt an ancient race
which, though at that time subject to Assyria, was destined to rule the world. Among
its people were wise men who gave much attention to the study of astronomy; and
when they noticed that the shadow on the sundial had been turned back ten degrees,
they marveled greatly. Their king, Merodachbaladan, upon learning that this miracle
had been wrought as a sign to the king of Judah that the God of heaven had granted
him a new lease of life, sent ambassadors to Hezekiah to congratulate him on his
recovery and to learn, if possible, more of the God who was able to perform so great a
wonder." -Prophets and Kings, p. 344.

Elijah's Experience to be Repeated o Wednesday

June 18
7. When Israel had apostatized and a great reformation was an urgent necessi-
ty, what display of divine power in response to the prayer of Elijah brought
the spirit of repentance? 1 Kings 18:36-39.

"It was because Elijah was a man of large faith that God could use him in this

- 42-
grave crisis in the history of Israel. As he prayed, his faith reached out and grasped the
promises of Heaven, and he persevered in prayer until his petitions were answered. He
did not wait for the full evidence that God had heard him, but was willing to venture all
on the slightest token of divine favor. And yet what he was enabled a do under God, all
may do in their sphere of activity in God's service, for of the proph-
et from the mountains of Gilead it is written: 'Elias was a man subject to like passions
as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth
by the space of three years and six months.' James 5:17." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 156, 157.
8. From the many promises and records of the manifestations of divine power
in response to prayer, what important lessons may be learned for the times
before us? Isaiah 41:17-20.

"The people of God will not be free from suffering [during the last plagues]; but
while persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer want of food
they will not be left to perish. That God who cared for Elijah will not pass by one of
His self-sacrificing children. He who numbers the hairs of their head will care for
them, and in time of famine they shall be satisfied. While the wicked are dying from
hunger and pestilence, angels will shield the righteous and supply their wants.
. . ." - The Great Controversy, p. 629.

Intercession Becomes Unnecessary D Thursday

June 19
9. What great physical transformation of the earth will eliminate the need for
seeking divine intervention through prayer? Revelation 21:1-7.

" ... All nature in its surpassing loveliness will offer to God a constant tribute of
praise and adoration. The world will be bathed in the light of heaven. The years will
move on in gladness. The light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light
of the sun will be sevenfold greater than it is now. Over the scene the morning stars
will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy, while Christ and God will
unite in proclaiming, 'There shall be no more sin, neither shall there be any more
death.' "-Review and Herald, December 17, 1908.

10. What heavenly standard must be reached by those who will be sealed by the
Third Angel to see the fulfillment of their intercessions? Revelation 14:1-5.

"The sum and substance of the whole matter of Christian grace and experience is
contained in believing on Christ,. in knowing God and His Son whom He hath sent.
But here is where many fail, for they lack faith in God. Instead of desiring to be
brought into fellowship with Christ in His self-denial and humiliation, they are ever
seeking for the supremacy of self. As long as they will not fall upon the Rock and be
broken, they cannot appreciate the love of the character of God. We may be one with
Christ, but we must be willing to yield our own way and our own will, and have the
mind that was in Christ, that we may know what it is to have a fellowship with him in
humiliation and suffering. Our ideas are too contracted; we must have more expanded
views of Christ and the character of his work. 0, if we did but appreciate the love of
God, how our hearts would be expanded, our limited sympathies would be enlarged,
and break away from the icy barriers of selfishness, and our comprehension would be
deeper than it now is; for we should look beneath the surface." -Review and Herald, May 24,
1892.

PRAYER
AFTER THE CLOSE OF PROBATION

The sealed ones have learned to seek God through prayer and depend on His
power and will continue to do so until finally delivered

KEY TEXT: "And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city,
through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of
the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in
the midst thereof" (Ezekiel 9:4).

The Sealed Ones D Sunday

June 22
1. How does the prophet Ezekiel clearly describe the final result of the sealing
work? Ezekiel 9:1-6.

". . . But more especially will their prayers arise in behalf of the church because
its members are doing after the manner of the world.
"The earnest prayers of this faithful few will not be in vain. When the Lord
comes forth as an avenger, He will also come as a protector of all those who have
preserved the faith in its purity and kept themselves unspotted from the world. It is at
this time that God has promised to avenge His own elect which cry day and night unto
Him, though He bear long with them."-Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 209, 210.

2. What is said of the sealed saints and what are they doing? What is the
significance of this? Ezekiel 9:4.

"The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and the
salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful character. They will
always be on the side of faithful and plain dealing with sins which easily beset the peo-
ple of God."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 266.

Time ofJacob's Trouble D Monday

June 23
3. What telling illustration is used by the prophet Jeremiah to show the anxiety
in "the time of trouble?" Jeremiah 30:5-7.
"Jacob's night of anguish, when he wrestled in prayer for deliverance from the
hand of Esau (Genesis 32:24-30), represents the experience of God's people in the
time of trouble.... Jacob's company, unarmed and defenseless, seemed about to fall
helpless victims of violence and slaughter. And to the burden of anxiety and fear was
added the crushing weight of self-reproach, for it was his own sin that had brought
this danger. His only hope was in the mercy of God; his only defense must be
prayer. Yet he leaves nothing undone on his own part to atone for the wrong to his
brother and to avert the threatened danger. So should the followers of Christ, as they

-44 -
approach the time of trouble, make every exertion to place themselves in a proper
light before the people, to disarm prejudice, and to avert the danger which threatens
liberty of conscience." - The Great Controversy, p. 616,

4. What was the result of Jacob's importunate prayer? Hosea 12:4 (first part).

"The crisis in his life has come; everything is at stake. In the darkness and
solitude he continues praying and humbling himself before God. . . .
"Through humiliation, repentance, and self-surrender, this sinful, erring mortal
prevailed with the Majesty of heaven. He had fastened his trembling grasp upon the
promises of God, and the heart of Infinite Love could not turn away the sinner's
plea. . . ." -The Great Controversy, p. 617.

Divine Assurances D Tuesday

June 24
5. While maintaining sincere and continuing prayer during "the time of trou-
ble," what promise may be claimed with confidence? Isaiah 43:2.

"The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can 'endure
weariness, delay, and hunger-a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The
period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because
he was persevering and determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of impor-
tunate prayer. All who will lay hold of God's promises, as he did, and be as earnest
and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to
deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not
obtain it. Wrestling with God-how few know what it is! How few have ever had their
souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every power is on the stretch.
When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how
few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God."- The Great Controversy, p. 621.

6. In the fearful physical changes and the uncertainties associated with "the
time of trouble," what prophetic promises will be fulfilled? Psalm 121:4-8.

"Yet to human sight it will appear that the people of God must soon seal their
testimony with their blood as did the martyrs before them.... Like Jacob, all are
wrestling with God. Their countenances express their internal struggle. Paleness sits
upon every face. Yet they cease not their earnest intercession.
"Could men see with heavenly vision, they would behold companies of angels
that excel in strength stationed about those who have kept the word of Christ's pa-
tience. With sympathizing tenderness, angels have witnessed their distress and have
heard their prayers. . . ."- The Great Controversy, p. 630.

Prayers Answered D Wednesday

June 25
7. In contrast with the prayers of hope made by the believers, for what will the
unbelievers pray? Revelation 6:15-17.

"The derisive jests have ceased. Lying lips are hushed into silence. The clash of
arms, the tumult of battle, 'with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood' (Isaiah
9:5), is stilled. Nought now is heard but the voice of prCj.yer and the sound of weeping

- 45-
and lamentation. The cry bursts forth from lips so lately scoffing: 'The great day of
His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?' The wicked pray to be buried
beneath the rocks of the mountains rather than meet the face of Him whom they have
despised and rejected." - The Great Controversy, p. 642.
8. When God's people are delivered from their suffering while the "vials of
wrath" are being poured out, what permanent change in the divine-human
relationship will take place? Revelation 7:14-17.
". . . Henceforth they are to be ever with the Lord. They stand before the
throne clad in richer robes that the most honored of the earth have ever worn. They
are crowned with diadems more glorious than were ever placed upon the brow of
earthly monarchs. The days of pain and weeping are forever ended. The King of
glory has wiped the tears from all faces; every cause of grief has been removed...."
- The Great Controversy, p. 650.

Prayer Becomes Unnecessary o Thursday

June 26
9. What expression of natural and voluntary emotions will take the place of
prayer and supplication? Revelation 15:3.
". . . And they sing 'a new song' before the throne, a song which no man can
learn save the hundred and forty-four thousand. It is the song of Moses and the
Lamb-a song of deliverance. None but the hundred and forty-four thousand can
learn that song; for it is the song of their experience-an experience such as no other
company have ever had. . . ." - The Great Controversy, pp. 648, 649.
10. When all the gracious agencies of the gospel, including prayer, are no longer
necessary, who will be satisfied? Isaiah 53:11.
"[Zech. 9:16; Eph. 1:18; Isa. 53:11 quoted.] Christ looks upon his people in their
purity and perfection as the reward' of all his sufferings, his humiliation, and his love,
and the supplement of his glorY,-Christ the great center, from whom radiates all
glory." -Review and Herald, October 22, 1908.

Thirteenth Sabbath Offering

A NEW CENTER IN QUITO

ECUADOR
Our brethren in the Andean Union have presented the need for
the Conference in Ecuador to have a center in Quito the capital city
and site of their headquarters. To start this project in Quito a
brother has already donated to the conference there a suitable lot.
The title papers are already in possession of the Movement.
The area of the lot is 584.6 square meters [700 square yards ap-
proximately. See page 47 for details]. The same brother has promis-
ed to give another donation, the equivalent of over $4,000.00, as
soon as he sees other contributions and the work of construction
begin with the reasonable prospect of being able to be carried
through to completion. It is for this reason that the brethren there
have appealed to the General Conference, and through them to our
brethren and sisters throughout the world for help in this project.
The means that they have in hand are not sufficient to bring it to
completion and they are counting on the good will of the Sabbath
School members throughout the world.
Already they have an established company meeting in Quito,
above fifty each Sabbath. Many oLthese are young people, of both
sexes and a number of them are already preparing for baptism. It is
the plan to construct a place of worship and make provision for the
needs of the different departments of the work there and also living
quarters for the minister stationed in Quito.
Weare happy to bring this information to you because we
believe that you will be happy to contribute generously to help our
work to go forward in these countries that have known very little of
the emancipation resulting from the influence of the open Bible.

THE LORD LOVES THE CHEERFUL GIVER-

It is suggested that all follow the instruction given by the apostle Paul to the
believers in Corinth, to lay aside each week a certain amount as the Lord
has prospered them so that when the Thirteenth Sabbath comes, they will
have in hand a big contribution because they h,ave planned ahead for it.
