Students need to engage in real and genuine situations, that is, to have authentic
contexts, to make meaning of their learning. The three Key Concepts of Sustainability as
outlined in the Australian Curriculum are “…systems, world views and futures” (Australian
Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], 2017). The key concept of
‘futures’ aims to build “…capacities for thinking and acting in ways that are necessary to
create a more sustainable future” (ACARA, 2017). The purpose of this lesson plan and design
brief is to engage students in meaningful ways so they can reflect on how their actions and
choices contribute to waste which adds to landfill; as well as design, produce, evaluate and
use a product that reduces their impact on the environment in an ongoing manner. In the
lesson students are introduced to plastic packaging and how it contributes to landfill and what
beeswax food wraps are including the positive and negatives of their use and their
sustainability qualities. Additionally, the design brief, outlines the task and expectations for
and Reporting Authority (ACARA, 2017) Key Concepts the design brief and lesson aim to
engage students in the design and manufacturing processes of a new product, taking into
(ACARA, 2017). Students are to make comparisons between their product and other similar
commercially available products to determine the sustainable and ethical attributes of each
product.
