SEPARATION PROCESSES – TAKE HOME QUIZ 2 (VLE + McCabe Thiele Method)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This is a take-home exam. You may use computers in order to solve the problems. Make
sure to print all of your spreadsheets/solution sheets/computer code when done, and
staple them along with this sheet.
2. Fill in the table of final answers below and make sure to sign the honor code.
3. Use DIPPR design equations for the vapor pressure ONLY.

(50 pts) Generate a T-x-y diagram for acetone (1) and water (2) at 0.75 atmospheres using the
Modified Raoult’s Law method. Make a short write-up on how you solved the problem. Present
all of the equations used. Use the Margules equation in predicting the activity coefficients.

Margules interaction parameters for Acetone-Water: A12 = 1.928799; A21 = 1.642618

(50 pts) A 65% methanol + 35% water solution undergoes binary rectification. The distillate is
desired to be of 98% methanol and the bottoms is desired to contain 97.5% water. If the
feed enters as saturated liquid and that there are 11 plates (not including the reboiler) in the
tower, find the reflux ratio.

Honor Pledge

On my honor, I hereby pledge that I did not engage in any form of cheating on this quiz, nor did I
tolerate or coerce any of my classmates to do the same. I understand that I shall automatically
fail Separation Processes if I am proven to have violated this pledge. So help me God.
