Assessment and Evaluation for 240 ton crane Lifting for Impacts to UG utilities:

240 Ton Crane:

Per vendor information provided, the total weight of the crane is 134,182 lbs. Additionally,
97,000 lbs. of counterweight could potentially be added. This gives a total crane load of 231,182
lbs.
Max lifted load 69,000 lbs.
Total = 300,182 lbs.
Worst case load on outriggers @ 85% incipient tipping = 0.85(300,182) = 255,155 lbs.
Crane boom between two outriggers:
Each out rigger sees ½ this load: Load per pad = 255,155/2 = 127,577 lbs.
Crane boom directly over one outrigger:
From above, the reaction per pad is: 127,577 lbs.
This reaction is due, in part, to an applied moment and, in part, to the total dead weight of the
mobile crane and lifted load. The four outriggers can be considered nearly square. Therefore, a
check with the load between the two front outriggers can be said to envelope the cases of the
load between the rear or side outriggers. The equation for the reaction with the crane arm
between the front outriggers can be written as:
M F
R 
2d 4
Where,
R = 127.577 kip Per pad load for the position of the crane arm between the front two outriggers
d = 27.25’/2 = 13.62’ Distance to resolve moment
F = 300.182 kip Total weight from above (Dead weight + lifted load)
M = Theoretical applied moment due to tipping (Moment is resolved about distance between
pairs of outriggers)
Solving for the moment,
R  F
M   2 d
 4
M = (127.577 kip – (300.182 kip / 4) (2)(13.62) ft. = 1,430.96 kip*ft
The outriggers form can be approximated as a square with sides 13.62’ long. Therefore, the
equation for the reaction with the crane arm over one outrigger can be written as:
M F
R2 
2d 4
Where,
R2 = Per pad load for the position of the crane arm over one outrigger
d = 13.62ft Distance between front outriggers and back outriggers as before
F = 300.182 kip Total weight from above (Dead weight + lifted load)
M = 1,430.96 kip*ft Theoretical applied moment is taken as the same as above
Solving for the reaction at the forward outrigger,
R2 = (1,430.96 kip*ft / (1.414*13.62ft)) + (300.182 kip/4) = 149.336 kip
R2 =149.336 kip
Apad = Area of pad = 4’x8’ = 32sf
Soil pressure: R2/Apad = 149,336 lbs. / 32sf = 4,667 psf = 2.34 tsf
Assume allowable soil bearing pressure for compacted backfill is 2.5 ton / sf. Therefore, a
minimum crane cribbing / matting of 4'x8', or 32sf, per outrigger will be required to not exceed
the allowable soil bearing pressure under each mobile crane outrigger for the 240 ton crane.
