Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I can create a video transcript for students who could not hear. I can create an audio version of the virtual
tour along with a more detailed questions. The students can work in partners if needed for the PowerPoint.

Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson will begin with the students watching an informational video about Elis Island, so they can
continue to learn about how the immigrants came to America. Then, they will conduct a virtual tour of Elis
Island, while completing a written worksheet. Finally, the students will create a PowerPoint of their family
going through Elis Island and this can be a fiction or non-fiction family. The students will spend time studying
their cultures and how each culture was treated going through Elis Island and this allows for differentiation
because students will be connecting their personal back grounds. This can also be differentiated by the means
of the students’ presentations. They can stand up and present their PowerPoints or they can make it a video
and use their voice over it.

The project will be introduced before they begin their learning online, so they begin to think about their
family going through. It will take about two days for the virtual tour and I will give three days to complete
their PowerPoints, then the next week we will take about two days to present. The students will be graded on
the completion of the virtual tour and then the project will be graded by a rubric made from the standard. I

am extending the students’ learning to a higher level by connecting the immigration process to their personal
families and their cultures. The presentations will be the conclusion of the lesson.
Reflective Practice:
I think this lesson plan will be very beneficial for the students because they are learning and creating a
product that will be engaging for all students. The introductory activity is the Elis Island video and the virtual
tour. With student and parent permission, I could post their work on a collaboration website to allow for
collaboration outside of the classroom.
