TAJWEED RULES OF Qirā’at

Ya˘qūb Al-Ḥaḍramī
FROM RIWAYATI
Ruways and Rawḥ
From the Ṭarīq of Ash-
Shāṭibiyyah and Ad-Durrah

Ibn Al-Jazarī clarified 3 Qurrā’ in the poem, Ad-Durrah, which is

complementary to Ash-Shāṭibiyyah’s poem of 7 Qurrā’. He gives
ُ the same code letters that Ash-Shāṭibī
Ya˘qūb Al-Ḥaḍramī (ḥṭī, ‫)ح ِّطي‬
gives to Abī ˘Amr Ul-Baṣrī on the basis that the latter is considered the
aṣl (root, reference) of Ya˘qūb. (‫ )ح‬for Ya˘qūb, (‫ )ط‬for Ruways, and (‫)ي‬
for Rawḥ. So, in the Durrah, Ibn al-Jazarī only mentions how Ya˘qūb
differs from ash-Shāṭibiyyah in his aṣl. These are mentioned in blue text.

The Tajwīd Rules of Qirā-at Ya˘qūb Al-Ḥaḍramī

9) Ya˘qūb Al-Ḥaḍramī: He is Abū Muḥammad Ya˘qūb ibn Isḥāq

ibn Zayd ibn ˘Abdu Allāh Al-Ḥaḍramī Al-Baṣrī. He is the ninth
qārī of the ten. He studied the Qur-ān under Abī al-Mundhir Salām
ibn Saliem and others. His qirā’ah goes back to many companions
of the Prophet ‫ ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص‬through Abī Mūsā al-Ash˘arī. He became the
imām of the Qārīs in Baṣrah after the death of Abī ˘Amr ibn El-
˘Alā’ Al-Baṣrī.
He was initially considered among the seven major Qārīs by many
of the early scholars, but Ibn Mujāhid gave his position to al-Kisā-ī
instead. He passed away in 205 A.H.

The two Rāwīs who preserved his qirā-ah are Ruways and Rawḥ.

i) Ruways: Muhammad ibn El Muttawakkil Al-Baṣrī. (d. 238 A.H.)

ii) Rawḥ: Abū ul-Ḥasan Rūh ibn ˘Abd El-Mu-min Al-Hudthalī Al-
Baṣrī. (d. 235 A.H.), who was one of the teachers of Imām al-
Bukhārī (d. 256 A.H.) and he narrated from him in his ṣaḥīḥ.

Note: In general, Rawh (‫ )ي‬reads like Ḥafṣ, while Ruways (‫)ط‬

reads differently and will be mentioned first when they differ.

1- THE BASMALAH BETWEEN TWO SŪRAHS

Ya˘qūb has 3 ways of joining any two successive sūrahs with or

without basmalah, by using Basmalah, Sakt or Waṣl.

4-Mīm Uljam˘ And The Previous Letter’s Ḥarakah

Ya˘qūb reads the pronoun hā of the plural, third person in 2 ways:

with a ḍammah or kasrah. If this hā is followed by mīm uljam˘ that
precedes a sākin letter, then (to avoid the meeting of 2 sākin), he
reads mīm uljam˘ with kasrah or ḍammah to match the previous hā
I- He reads both with kasrah if the hā is preceded by a letter that

6. The Rules of a Single Hamzah in a word

Ya˘qūb reads some hamzahs with different ways, as follows:

(1) Naql (or naql ul-ḥarakah) means to transfer the ḥarakah of the
hamzah to the sākin ṣaḥiḥ letter before it and omit the hamzah.
ُۡ ً َ
َٰ
Ya˘qūb makes naql, only for one word: ‫ َعدا ٱلوَّل‬in 53: 49. He
‫َ َ َّ ُ َ ۡ َ َ َ ى‬
reads )َ‫ (وأنهۥ أهلك َعدا ٱلَول‬with naql and idghām of the tanwīn into
the sākin lām, then transfers the ḍammah of the hamzah to
ً
the sākin mushaddad lām, omitting the hamzah and reads:ََ‫ ََعداَٱلَول‬.
َ ُۡ
In waqf on the first word ‫ ََعدا‬, he starts the 2nd in 3 ways (a) َ‫ٱۡلول‬,
ُ
the preferred, (b) َ‫ َٱلول‬: hamzat ulwaṣl is pronounced maftūḥah,
ُ
followed by the lām with maḍmūmah and lām with taqlīl. (c) َ‫َلول‬:
without hamzat ulwaṣl, since the lām acquired a ḍammah.
Ruways only, makes naql in 55: 52 ‫ۡبق‬ َ ۡ َ‫م ِّۡن إ ۡست‬, he reads: ‫ۡبق‬
َ ۡ َ‫مِّن ٱِ ۡست‬.
ِّ ِّ
ََْ ْ
ٌ ‫ۡبق ِّط‬
*** ‫يب‬ ٍ ‫م ِِّّن است‬
(2) Ibdāl: Ya˘qūb yubdilu (replaces or substitutes the hamzah by a
letter of madd that corresponds to the previous letter’s ḥarakah).
He makes ibdāl of some hamazāt:1- hamzah maftūḥah preceded by
َ ‫( ِّلَ َه‬19:19). 2- A sākin hamzah into
َ ‫ َِّلَ َه‬-‫بب‬
kasrah tubdal into a yā: ‫ب‬

an alif in (18, 21) ‫وج‬ َ ‫وج َو َما ُج‬ َ ‫وج َو َمأۡ ُج‬
َ ‫ يَا ُج‬:‫وج‬ َ ‫يَأۡ ُج‬
ٌ ۡ ً َ َّ َ
(3) Ḥadthf: ‫ َحبذف‬Ya˘qūb deletes a hamzah from (18: 94) )‫ دَّك‬:‫(دَّك َء‬
َ َ َ ُ َٰ َ ُ
and )‫ يُض َٰ ُهون‬: ‫هون‬ ِّ ‫((يض‬9: 30).

9
The International book of Qirā-at Ya˘qūb Al-Ḥaḍramī
(4) Tas-hīl -means easing the pronounciation by reading a hamzah
between the sound of a hamzah and the letter of madd which
corresponds to its ḥarakah. Ya˘qūb reads the 2nd hamzat alwaṣl in
ۡ ۡ ُ َّ ‫ َء‬-‫ّلِل‬
ُ َّ ‫ َءا‬sūrah 10, and ‫كرين‬ َّ َ َ َّ َ

tas-hīl and ibdāl into an alif that is elongated to 6 ḥarakāt madd
lāzim. Ruways only, reads with tas-hīl - -and in the following.

7. TWO CONSECUTIVE HAMZAHS IN A WORD

If 2 of hamzat qaṭ˘ follow each other in a word, the 1st questioning

hamzah maftūḥah, has to be pronounced muḥaqqaqqah. The 2nd
hamzah is maftūḥah, maḍmūmah, or maksūrah and is read with
tas-hīl by the 1st 3 qurrā’ and also Ruways.

Ya˘qūb adds an istifhām hamzah to 4 words, in which Ruways

َ ۡ َ َۡ
reads with tas-hīl of the 2nd hamzah of: 1- ‫ َء۬اذه ۡب ُت ۡم‬-‫( َءأذه ۡب ُت ۡم‬46:19)

8. Repetitive Questioning (Istifhām Mukarrar)

Ya˘qūb reads the 9 of 11 places of repetitive questioning with

َّ َ َ
istifhām in the 1st place and a statement in the 2nd, )‫(أءِّذا)… (إ ِّنبا‬.
The opposite is in sūrat ul˘Ankabūt, and istifhām in both places in
sūrat anNaml. Ruways reads the 2nd hamzah with tas-hīl, while
َ َ

9. 2 ADJACENT HAMZAHS BETWEEN 2 WORDS

When 8 hamzahs meet in 8 words, (i.e. the 1st hamzah is the last
letter of the 1st word and the 8nd hamzah is the 1st letter of the
8nd word) Ruways reads these words in different ways, depending
َ َ ْ َ ْ
on the ḥarakāt of the 8 hamazāt (pl.). *** ‫َو َحقِّق ُه َما َّكالِّختِّل ِّف يَ ِِّع وِّال‬
The 2 hamzahs either differ or agree in their ḥarakāt.

(A) When The 2 Hamzahs Agree in Their Ḥarakāt

If the 2 hamzahs agree (ittafaqatā) in their ḥarakāt, then Ruways
ْ
makes tas-hīl of the 2nd hamzah. ** * ‫ان إ ِّذ َط َرا‬ َّ‫ َو َح َال ات َِّفاق َسهل اِل‬-72

ِّ ‫(أ‬.

(B) When the 2 hamzahs differ in their ḥarakāt

If the 2 hamzahs differ in their vowels (ikhtilāf ḥarakāt) then Abū
Ja˘far and 7 rāwīs agree upon reading the 2nd hamzah by applying
a rule to it, depending on where the fatḥah vowel is: either the 1st
hamzah is maftūḥah, the 2nd or none of them.

The Rule
(a) If the 1st hamzah is maftūḥah, then make tas-hīl of the 2nd.

(b) If the 2nd hamzah is maftūḥah, then he makes ibdāl of it to a

letter of madd that matches the preceding ḥarakah. If the 1st
hamzah is maksūrah, then he turns the 2nd into a yā maftūḥah. If
the 1st is maḍmūmah, then he turns the 2nd to a wāw maftūḥah.

(c) If neither of them is maftūḥah (the 1st hamzah is maḍmūmah

and the 2nd is maksūrah, the opposite does not exist in the Qur-ān)
then Ruways makes tas-hīl and ibdāl of the 2nd hamzah into a wāw
maksūrah and the ibdāl is preferred, muqaddam.

12- Ruways Makes Ishmām With a Ḥarkāh or Letter

ْ ‫يئ‬
a) Al-ishmām: the pronounciation of the 1st letter of a word (‫ت‬ َ ‫( ِّس‬
with a combination of 2 vowels: round the lips as if pronouncing
ḍammah, while producing a kasrah for the same letter, as follows.

Ruways makes ishmām in 6 words ‫س َء‬ ‫( ّ ِ ي‬11: 77), ‫يت‬ َ ‫( ّسِِّ ي‬67: 27),
َ َ ّ َ َ ّ َ ّ

and ‫ي َء‬ ‫( َو ّجا ْ ي‬39: 67), (89: 23). *** ‫يل َو َما َم ْع ُهو‬ َ ْ
ِّ‫َواش ِم ىما ِطل بِّق‬
ِ

b) Ishmām of the sākin letter ṣād )‫ (ص‬followed by dāl with zā: by

pronouncing a mixture of the sounds of ‫ ص‬and ‫ز‬. The sound is as
a ‫ ظ‬without rakhawah (stiking the tongue) or a velarated zā (thick)
The ṭā )‫ (ط‬is a letter code which indicats that Ruways recites these
ُ
words with ishmām: )َ‫ (تَصّدَية‬8:35, )َ‫ (يَصّدَفون‬6:158, )‫ (يَصّ َُد َُر‬29: 23,

If 8 sākin letters meet between 8 words, then waṣlan, the 1st sākin
is either given a ḥarakah or it is dropped if it is a madd letter.
َ
Ya˘qūb reads the 1st sākin with a ḍammah, Only in one word: ‫أ ْو‬,
on the condition that the 8nd sākin is a verb that starts with
hamzatul waṣl and its 2rd letter (including hamzatul waṣl), carries
ُ َ َ ُ َ ْ ۡ َ
a permanent ḍammah (lāzimah). ‫(أ ُو ٱخ ُر ُجوا مِّن دِّي َٰ ِّركم) (ن ِّۡصف ُهۥ أ ُو ٱنق ۡص‬

13. Al-Idghām Aṣ-ṣaghīr (Assimilation)

The small idghām (ṣaghīr) occurs when merging a sākin mudghām
