Dear readers. I am grateful once again to speak to you through
this edition of the ROADS MAGAZINE which is the first edition
of the year 2016. This particular edition provides us with an
opportunity to set the agenda of the year 2016 and to reflect on
the activities that have taken place in the year 2015 and before

Eng. Mwinga said the contractor China Geo Engineering


Corporation (CGC) had made progress since the
project started in January, 2015 with 12 kilometers
of the subgrade and 13.5 kilometers of the subbase
completed. He described the quality of works on the
project as good.

He said the works had however slowed down due


to financial constraints and as a result only concrete
lining of drainages and road line markings were going
on. He hoped that that the contractor would be paid
expeditiously to enable him accelerate the works. He
added that the project was part of the Link Zambia
8000 Project and would provide an alternative route
for travelers from Lusaka to Chirundu once completed.
The project starts at Katoba and ends in Chirundu.

The existing road runs through a rolling terrain for


the first 15 kilometres and another 15 kilometres
of very rocky and steep terrain while the remaining
approximately 64 kilometres of road is on flat terrain
to Chirundu.

The scope of works includes: drainage related works


such as Installation of subsoil drains, construction of
open roadside drains and mitre drains, Construction of
concrete lined open drains, Construction of kerb and
channel, and Construction of culverts complete with
inlet and outlet structures.

Other road related works include: bush clearing


and grubbing, road formation and sub grade,
Road earthworks including cuts and embankments,
Construction of pavement layers, Construction of
crushed stone base , gravelling of sub-base and cement
stabilization of gravel base layers, and construction
to bituminous standard surfacing extending over the
shoulders in selected sections,

Road Lot 2 commences

road which covers approximately 131.5 kilometers from
Saivonga to Munyumbwe and is being executed by China
Henan International Cooperation. This connection will
provide a shorter link from Livingstone to Siavonga and
