Bullying is one of the most actual problems of the 21st century. The number of victims of

bullying is growing. It is very important to inform the society about bullying, which makes

possible to reduce risk-factors caused by bullying. Society will be able to contribute in anti-

bullying company.

What is bullying? This is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.

Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time. Bullying involves an imbalance of

power or strength. Bulling consists of three components: victim, guilty, act-itself.

There are different kinds of bullying: physical, verbal, relational, cyber bullying.

Physical bullying includes hitting or kicking the victim, or, taking or damaging the

victim’s property.

Physical bullying can take many forms:

 Hitting

 Pushing

 Tripping

 Slapping

 Spitting

 Stealing or destroying possessions, including books, clothing, or lunch money.

Physical bullying may also cross the line into sexual harassment or sexual assault.
Verbal bullying is name-calling, making offensive remarks, or joking about a person’s

religion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or the way they look. For example, if there

was a group of kids who made fun of another kid because he couldn’t run as fast as

everyone else, it would be an example of verbal bullying. Verbal aggression is when a bully

teases someone. It can also include a bully making verbal threats of violence or aggression

against someone’s personal property.

Verbal bullies use words to hurt or humiliate another person. Verbal bullying includes:

 name-calling

 insulting

 making racist comments

 constant teasing

There are two types of relational bullying:

 proactive

 reactive

o Proactive relational aggression is when behaviors are a means for achieving a

goal.

For example, David may need to exclude Nick from his group in order to

maintain his own social status.

o Reactive relational aggression is behavior that is in response to provocation,

with the intent to retaliate.

For example, Rob gets teased in the hallways repeatedly and he may

become a teaser in order to protect himself from teasing.

Cyber bullying is when someone (or a group of people) uses technology to verbally,

socially or psychologically bully.

Cyber bullying occurs when teens use communication technology to say hurtful,

embarrassing, or threatening things about another teen.

Cyber bullying is done by sending messages, pictures, or information using electronic

media, computers (e-mail & instant messages), or cell phones (text messaging & voicemail). For

instance, if you sent a picture of a snake in an email to a person because you know that they

are afraid of snakes that would be an example of cyber bullying. The growth of this type of

bullying is going up fast because of the spread of technology around the world.

Cyber bullying can happen in many different areas such as:

 E-mails

 Web sites

 Text messaging

 Cell phones

 Three-way calling

 Video

 Blogs and any other form of communication that occurs electronically

Cyber victimization has been shown to cause:

 Poor grades

 Emotional spirals

 Poor self-esteem

 Repeated school absences

 Depression

 Suicide

Emotional / Social bullying are things such as spreading rumors. Excluding in games and

talking behind others back.

Social alienation is when a bully excludes someone from a group on purpose. It also

includes a bully spreading rumors, and also making fun of someone by pointing out their

differences.

Psychological bullying is when someone (or a group of people) repeatedly and

intentionally uses words or actions which cause you psychological harm.

Intimidation bullying is when a bully threatens someone else and frightens that person

enough to make him or her do what the bully wants.

Indirect bullying includes spreading rumors or stories about someone, telling others

about something that was told to you in private, and excluding others from groups. An example

would be if you started a rumor that a boy in your class likes playing with dolls, and if the

reason that you made up the story was because you thought it was funny. This would be

indirect bullying.

Bullying in the family is the most spread kind of bullying. It exists in almost every country

in the world. It is when one member of the family bullies another person, physically,

psychologically, economically, sexually. It is very harmful especially for kids.

This tendency becomes usual in our country as well. The recent research shows that:

 About 95 % of women are victims of family bullying

 Every third of a woman is the victim of biting, sexual or different kinds of bullying

 Death of 19-44 old ages of women are caused by the family bullying

 In Georgia only 10 % of family bullying is declared in the police

Teenagers who suffer from family bullying become violent in most cases. Sometimes

teenagers are influenced by violent computer games or films and videos. Growing up children

correctly in the family is the most important thing.

The famous children’s writer Astrid Lindgren remembers. Once she met a woman who

was against punishment of children in the family, but it happened that she had to punish her 5

years old boy. The boy was asked to bring a weep to be bitten, but the boy couldn’t find a weep

and brought a stone instead. The mother was ashamed and began to cry. She never punished

her children. This event became familiar and it caused to pass a low against punishment in

Sweden.

People who bully others usually pick on those who have less social power (peer status),

psychological power (know how to harm others), or physical power (size, strength) . However,
some people who bully also have been bullied by others. People who both bully and are bullied

by others are at the highest risk for problems (such as depression and anxiety) and are more

likely to become involved in risky behavior.

It is myth that only boys bully. People think that physical bullying by boys is the most

common form of bullying. However, verbal, social, and physical bullying happens among both

boys and girls, especially as they grow older.
