The Norms of Collegial Conversations 

(For use in Socratic Seminars and as generated by students in Mrs. Bestor’s 5/7 ELA class) 
 
1. Comes prepared for discussion with notes, texts, and questions. ___Yes ___ No ___Partially

2. Asks questions to better understand the ideas being shared by discussion mates.

3. Discusses the text using a combination of questions and responses to the questions of others without debating
or arguing.

4. Makes regular eye contact with discussion mates, but doesn’t stare in uncomfortable manner.

5. Encourages the participation of others by asking them questions or encouraging them to speak.

6. Is an active listener. Demonstrates listening by nodding, voicing agreement, making appropriate facial
expressions, and making eye contact with the speaker.

7. Explains ideas clearly, using textual evidence as well as evidence from your own experiences throughout.

8. Refers to the text by page and paragraph number; quotes, or paraphrases (putting the text in their own words)..

9. Speaks loudly and clearly enough to be heard by all participants.

10. Takes turns speaking. Doesn’t interrupt others.


11. Respects the ideas of discussion mates. Maintains an open mind. Comments on and compliments the ideas of
others.

12. Questions and responses demonstrate an attempt to make meaning from the text.
