How Hurricane Florence Will Affect
the Wildlife

Hurricane Florence is ready to rip
through the East coast. Evacuations have
already been put into place. While animals have
to rough out the storm, how will this affect the
wildlife?
Several hurricanes, one including
Hurricane Harvey has caused severe damage to
the United States wildlife. For instance, Harvey
nearly wiped out the last remaining of Wild
Attwater’s Prairie Chickens. Even though
Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a
category 1 hurricane, the risks are still there.
But besides dangerous waves, we still have high
winds. With those high winds comes habitat
loss for birds, and seabirds getting swept to
shore where they don't belong. If habitats get
ruined, most birds won't have shelter or a food
source. While if birds get swept out to shore,
they might have a hard time getting back in the
air because most the time there feet are far back
on their body.
Waves can cause lots of damage. One of
the many damages is too much fresh water
rushing into salt water coastal ecosystems. This
can be devastating to the animals that live there.
For example, post-larval crabs have gotten
swept away and usually don't make it because
the salt water gets diluted. But in other words,
the effects on some species are completely
different than others.

Since the start of baseball, the home run average has risen and keeps rising. There has been
many suspicions: players getting slower, the ball being made differently, and/or the players are
getting more powerful. This also means there has been less stolen bases.
Coaches have realized that the heavy hitters that generally hit the most home runs, can’t
nearly run as hard as the smaller players. This results in less stolen base because of the riskiness.
Scientists have even looked into home run data, and it reportedly shows that there was a sudden
rush in home runs in the second half of the 2015 season. Even the most likely of reasons- such as
weather changes -wasn’t a correct explanation. Baseball officials even studied the baseballs
themselves. It was concluded that the baseballs, both new and used, were the same and are still
being made the same way.
In the 2017 world series, George Springer hit a huge home run for the Houston Astros, but
it was a little suspicious. As shown in videos and T.V, the ball ​exploded ​when it landed on the
Astros Community Leaders sign. This shows that something has changed throughout the years of
home runs and even baseball, and the hits are just going to get bigger, farther, and harder.

Surprising Sea Mammals Why Do Cats Purr?

Sea mammals swim in the water,
however, they are not fish. Seals breathe air just
like us. Seals are also warm-blooded, just like
humans. Some sea animals can go on land. They
may do this to find plants or other food, which is
found in a body of water, whether its a lake or an
ocean.
Some of the animals that live in the water
are sea otters, manatees, spinner dolphins, sea
cows, killer whales, polar bears and others.
Living in the water means the sea animals have
to adapt to the cold, harsh winters and hot
summers, but if the animals live in water, they
are cooler.
Spinner dolphins and killer whales travel
in large groups to hunt. The orcas help each other
stay safe from bigger animals by staying together
or they will become food. The death rate has
gone down since 2015 and if the fish system
stays up, so will the seal. The plants aren't going
up or down so either.

Strangest Laws in the USA

If you think you’ve heard of the
strangest laws, think again. These laws are
bound to leave you questioning some of the
states’ citizens sanity and what they get into.
Alaska has an odd law about serving
alcohol to a moose. That’s right. It’s illegal
to serve alcohol to a moose in Alaska. In
Hawaii, it is against the law to put billboards
up. Whether it be on the side of the road, at a
resort, or just at some old town, billboards are
illegal. This law was put in place to protect
the Hawaii’s natural beauty and take your
eyes off of the forests and such. In Fresh Lick
Springs, Indiana, you must put a bell and a
collar on your pet black cat on Friday the
13th. Put in place in 1939, the law was made
to protect the cats, because many people have

the 13th, and they think that seeing a random
black cat on that day is horrible luck. If you
put a bell on your black cat, people will be
less terrified, knowing that the cat is

Easter), unless it’s in a quantity lower than
six. The law is to protect the animals, so they
don’t die from inhaling or ingesting too much

animals. Finally, in Washington, it is illegal to
shoot a sasquatch. Not because you just killed
someone in a costume, but because you’ll
even have to attend a trial in a sasquatch
court. I guess people in Washington are firm
believers of sasquatch and would be
devastated if someone killed (the real)

Many people wonder why cats purr,
some people think that it's because they are
happy, but when cats purr it does not entirely
mean they are happy. It can mean many things
including that they are hurt, content, hungry, or
they want something. Surprisingly, a purr is the
most common noise a cat makes but we do not
know much about it.
Researchers claim that it can help a cat
get better quicker, the low frequency of the
purrs cause a series of vibrations in their bodies
that can help heal bones and wounds, build
muscle and repair tendons. This is very
interesting because this could be the reason
cats can survive falls from high places, or
because they don’t need much care after
surgeries compared to dogs.
Multiple kittens purr when they are
young, this is believed to mean that they are
bonding with their mom, or it could simply
mean that they are showing their mom that they
are okay. Cat owner’s claim that they can hear
the difference in their cat’s purr when the cat is
hungry, this is highly agreeable to fellow cat
owners that don’t leave the cats food out for
them.
If a cat looks relaxed and lying there
and having it’s eyes half shut and purring,
more than likely it means the cat is calm and
happy, experts say that if your cat is doing this
it simply represents the cat is happy. Many
people also believe is that the cat is simply in
it’s happy place, just relaxing.
Yes it is very true, cat’s do purr when
they are content or are napping in the sun, you
might even here the simple rumble in the cat’s
throat if it’s purring. It is very important to
make sure your cat is happy most of the time. It

The Loch Ness Monster

In Scotland (The United Kingdom) the Loch
Ness Monster lurks within the lake of Loch
Lomond. The people and tourists of Scotland
were actually the people who named the Loch
Ness monster Nessie. Scientists believe Nessie
has nowhere else to hide. A team of international
scientists are going to take over 300 samples of
the water Nessie swims in and they are going to
test it for DNA of Nessie. If they find anything
suspicious they will send it to another scientist
that has been studying Nessie his whole life. The
people who are testing the water are hoping to
get answers by next year. A man named
Gemmell said that he sat at the lake for 5 months
where Nessie is. He says he saw the loch ness
monster late at night one of the days that he was
there. He said he was very mad when he saw him
because there were two ducks fighting and he
was right there watching Nessie jolt out of the
water and snap his jaws right on the ducks at the
same time swallowing them whole. scientists say
there are lake monsters all over the world and
Nessie is just a popular one because he is seen
the most. In 1933 Nessie got his name from
attacking a man in Theness River which was
connected to the Ness lake.
The loch ness monster has attacked many people
and monster hunters over the past 2 years. There
hasn't been as many as in previous years but still
people choose to risk their lives on finding the
loch ness monster creature. Many choose not to
believe in the loch ness monster because of all
the fake pictures of him.
Many people want to catch and sell the loch ness
monster but first they have to convince people

mushrooms in their yard or nasty mold growing
on there food. But surprisingly fungi has a very
important role in our ecosystem. Fungi play an

octopus? Blue ringed octopuses live in tide
pools and coral reefs. These reefs/tide pools
are found in the pacific and Indian oceans,

are very dangerous their venom can kill
twenty-six adults within minutes. The blue
ringed octopus usually eats crabs, though. A
blue ringed octopus change color just like
other octopuses, and it can change texture to
feel like a rock or a plant or coral. At least

octopus. Over the last ten years there has been
at least thirty deaths because the octopus will
bite you! You would feel like you can’t breath

Mummy or Alien

Do you believe in Mummies or aliens?
Scientists have found something amazing in
Chile! They have found a small mummified body
they believe is an alien. It was given the name
Ata, inspired by the Atacama Desert where the
remains were found. The body had very unique
features such as, a head with a point, large eye
sockets, and bones mature enough for a
six-year-old. The mummy traveled to many areas
for research including Barcelona, Spain. But new
information has come to light that “Ata” is
indeed a human infant body. This discovery had
led to an investigation regarding smuggling and
grave robbing. The Chilean National Monuments

obtained illegally in the early 2000s and
smuggled out of Chile.

Fires Ignite in California

Wildfires continue to spread through the
rural area of Northern California. They are still
trying to recover from last years devastating fires.
As in June, twenty-two buildings were already
destroyed and near 3,000 people had to evacuate
from their homes. County supervisor, Jim
Steeley, says firefighters face many challenges,
one reason is because they do not have up to date
equipment which makes it hard for them says

In Lake county Pawnee fire is burning it's
about 120 miles north from San Francisco.
Pawnee fire is being helped spread by the low
humidity and wind. More than 2,700 firefighters
and a dozen aircraft have fought this fire. The fire
has burned more than 13,500 acres of land sadly.

by Rebecca Mordechai, states that Terri
Gonsalves, fifty-five years old, evacuated her
home because a hill behind her house ignited in
flames. Now she is staying with her daughter

Fire destroyed dozens of homes in 2015,
and now they are back destroying more. Other
then the Pawnee fire, there's at least ten other
fires in California burning away the land. In the

The Dangerous Hurricane Florence

On September 14 2018, Hurricane
Florence hit the Carolinas reporting 32
deaths, including a 1-year-old boy Kaiden

and businesses are without power in North
and South Carolina, and 10 million are under
threat. Brett Neely, a firefighter from
Pennsylvania says “The water got so high, I
couldn’t believe it,”

North Carolina's coast could see up to 40
inches of total rain by the time Florence
passes through early next week. “ We
encourage people to not cross open areas of
water because that is what is getting people
injured and killed,” said Scott Dean, who
oversees a search-and-rescue team from
miami. The authorities in North and South
Carolina rescued more people by air and
water. Across the Carolinas, residents
struggled with the aftermath of a storm that
drenched the region with record rainfall.

Apple's New IPhones

The iPhone XS, pronounced "ten S,"
and XS Max were launched on Sept. 12. The
XS has a 5.8-inch screen, and starts at $999
while the XS Max, the largest iPhone to date
has a 6.5-inch screen, with a base price of
$1,099. Apple also expanded storage capacity
in its latest models, with 256 GB and 512 GB

Could Nano Wood Replace Styrofoam?

Styrofoam is a wonderful insulator thats
why its a popular building material. Styrofoam is
bad for the environment because its non
biodegradable ​this means it cannot become a
natural state that is harmless so its harmful to
animals that ingest it.
At the University of Maryland
Researchers have developed an alternative. They
used a super-lightweight material that could be
more eco friendly. This material is called
nanowood.
Nano wood is made from little fibers that
block heat 10 degrees better than styrofoam or
silica aerogel. Nano wood can take 30 time more
pressure before being crushed.
Lead author of study Tian Li and scientist
Liangbing Hu have a team working on
nanocellulose. This is a fibrous material that
make plants and trees rigid. Nanocellulose also
has an impressive strength to weight ratio, it's
about eight times greater than that of steel.
Lignin holds the cellulose of wood
together. Lignin is also a conductor. The
nanowood team is taking out the lignin. In result
it gave the product powerful insulating
capabilities. Lignin turned it white so now it can
reflect light. Researchers believe nanowood has
a lot of potential as a safe building material.
According to Li nano wood could save people
billions in energy costs and replace styrofoam.
Nanowood can be made into thin strips and
rolled and shaped so it can insulate curved
spaces. Nanowood is safer because unlike glass
or wool insulators it doesn't irritate lungs or
cause allergic reactions.. The nanowood team is
currently working on commercial applications
and hope the product will be available in a year
or so.

Parents Sign Papers To Donate His
Organs

Trenton Mckinley, 13 years old, was
playing with his friend about two months ago. He
was in a small utility trailer in a dune buggy that
was made for kids.Trenton says that his friend
slammed on the brakes, and trenton threw his
friends 4 year old niece into the grass, but in the
process of making sure the 4 year old was safe,
Trenton got caught in the trailer as it flipped. All
Trenton can remember is that he hit the concrete
and the trailer landed on his head.
After that he was immediately rushed to
the USA Medical Center for emergency surgery,
and was transferred to UAB Hospital in
Birmingham, Doctors found seven skull
fractures.
Trenton's mom said this, “All I saw was a
stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was
dead a total of 15 minutes,” said his mother,
Jennifer Reindl,she had tears in her eyes.
Plant Eating Shark

Researchers have discovered a type of shark
that eats plants, the sharks name is The
Bonnethead shark. Scientist don’t know how
the shark became known to eat grass all they
know is that they eat squids and fish. They
just had thought the Bonnethead shark
ingested the grass on accident. Researchers at
the University of California, Irvine, had
discovered enzymes in the sharks gut that
helps the shark, Bonnethead, break down the
grasses matter, it indicates that the shark eats
the plant on purpose to get the nutrients its
supposed to get from the grass.
Furthermore, as long as the shark eats
grass, the more nutrients it get from the plant,
researcher, Samantha Leigh says “Yet another
indication of why we have to preserve the
plants” she says to AP. The plants shares
nutrients with the Bonnethead as the plants
take in energy from the water and the sunlight
as any other plant does.
Though the Bonnethead doesn’t just
eat meat like everyone expects the shark
should other sharks might have different
tastes like people and their favourite type of
hobbies, foods and activities. The Bonnethead
shark is the first to be known to be an
omnivore, though that may be unusual for you
to hear since you have only heard of
carnivorous sharks like the ones you see in

network site “Miss O and Friends”, when she
was only 16 years-old! Her site gets over 10
million monthly visits and is worth $15
million. It is ranked third largest girl only
website. When Juliette was only 10 years old
she drew a set of characters she called the
cool girls, they were each inspired by real life
friends of hers at the time. As she got older
she started to reach out to family and friends
for help. Her mother, a graphic designer,
made the drawings based on her old ones. Her
father aided in company fundamentals. When

If you ever wonder if a cat is a male or a
female, just use this trick. If the cat has multiple
colors (excluding white mixed with another color),
it’s most likely a female. Here’s why; female cats,
like female humans, are born with two X
chromosomes, one from the father, and one from
the mother. Male cats, like male humans, on the
other hand, are born with one X chromosome from
the mother, and one Y chromosome from the father.
A cat’s fur color is determined by the X
chromosome so a male kit, will most likely be the
same color as one of his parents. A female kit,
however, is much more complicated. If her parents
are the same color, chances are, she’ll be that same
color. However, if her mother and father are
different colors, there is a whole different process.
If the X chromosomes (the fur color) is different,
they’ll take turns; ​one clump of cells will use
information from the father’s X chromosome, while
another clump will use information from the
mother’s, creating the beautiful tortoiseshell or
calico markings that some female, and even some
male cats have. White fur, on the other hand,
happens during a rare process unrelated to X and Y
chromosomes, which is why male cats can
commonly be white and black, but are rarely ever
orange and black. Since a cat needs two X
chromosomes to be calico, there's only one possible
way that a male cat can have those complicated
markings; by getting an extra X chromosome,
making the male’s genetic makeup XXY, not XY.
This only happens in 1 of 3,000 male cats! So if
your male cat is calico or tortoiseshell, you have
one rare cat!

The Re-open of a Subway

An important New York City subway
station has reopened for the first time since the
horrific 9/11 attacks when the World Trade
Center was terrorized. The first train rolled into
the new WTC Cortlandt Station while some
people cheered and some cried. The old
demolished station is underneath the ruins of
the World Trade Center. At first, while in the
midst of building, the construction was paused
to start on the reconstruction of the Twin
Towers. The new station had a total cost of
$181.8 million. MTA chairman​ ​Joseph Lhota
said in a statement​ that the recovery was “a
major milestone in the recovery and growth of
“Doctors said if he comes back which he did
he would be like a vegetable and never be
the same again. They told me the oxidation
(oxygen deprivation) problems would be so
bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable
if he even made it.” Said Jennifer Reindle.
The family says for the next several days,
Trenton was on life support and couldn't
breathe well. Reindl says she was
approached by doctors to make a difficult
decision. Trenton’s mom and dad made the
decision to donate Trentons organs. ​It was
unfair to keep bringing him back, because it
was just damaging his organs even more.”

His life ended so that five kids could live.
