EXPRESSING HOPES

A. Hopes
Hope is something that we want to happen and we work very hard for it to
happen. But we are not sure whether it will happen or not and sometimes we can’t do
anything about it. Hopes and dreams signal future intentions (Ben, 2012).

Pengertian Hope

Verb “hope” digunakan untuk membicarakan bahwa suatu kondisi atau situasi
memiliki kemungkinan terjadi di masa depan.
Maknanya “to want something to happen or be true and and think that it is
possible” (menginginkan sesuatu terjadi atau benar adanya dan berpikir bahwa itu
mungkin).

The hope can be many things

1. Hoping for the best - when you have not done well, just praying it to go well
2. Hoping against all odds - unrealistic expectations
3. It is so bad that you feel nothing can be worse & that it has to get better - this is our
natural protection system which tells you to stop fighting
4. You have had bad & good experiences in life - so you feel even this shall pass - a
realistic mindset

Now what kind of feeling is hope - well

1. It can be at times moral boosting/motivating/giving reason to look forward to future

2. It can be just avoiding the real issues at times as passive
3. It can be fighting back to face the odds happening in your life

B. Characteristic of Hope

Hope sentence has its General characteristic, that is having the “hope word”
after the subject, usually when using the hope sentence it will be accompained by a
plan that is desired or also can be included in the case if.

(Kalimat harapan memiliki ciri umum yaitu mempunyai kata hope setelah
subject, biasanya ketika menggunakan kalimat harapan akan desertai dengan
rencana yang diinginkan atau bisa juga termasuk dalam hal berandai – andai).

C. How to Express our Hope

1. Hope + Object / No Object

Hope dapat transitive (diikuti direct object) atau intransive (tidak diikuti direct
object).
Sebagai transitive verb, hope dapat diikuti infinitive (to+verb) atau that-
clause (noun clause) sebagai direct object-nya. Kata kerja ini digunakan
bersama infinitiveuntuk menyatakan harapan dan niat untuk melakukan sesuatu di
masa depan jika memungkinkan dapat dilakukan, sedangkan bersama that-
clause ketika ada subjectbaru yang ingin disebutkan (subject baru tersebut berada di
dalam that-clause).
Subordinator “that” pada that-clause tersebut dapat dihilangkan, sehingga
hanya menyisakan subject dan predicate-nya. That-clause tersebut sering
menggunakan present verb form (simple present tense) meskipun ada time
reference(keterangan waktu) di masa depan (next week, tomorrow, next month, dll).

 The verb ‘hope’ is to express:
 An event that possibly happened (past)
 A event that will possibly happen (future)
To say what you hope about the past, you use the simple past:
 I hope she found the restaurant.
 I hope he passed his class last semester.

To say what you hope about the present, you use the present:
 I hope he‘s all right.
 I hope he knows where the clinic is.
 I hope he‘s having a good time in Florida.
 I hope he likes Italian food.

To say what you hope about the future, you use the present (or the future, although it is less
common)
 I hope he has a good time in Florida next month. (I hope he’ll have a good time in
Florida next month.)
 I hope she comes to see us when she passes through New York.(I hope she’ll come to see
us when she passes through New York.)

Hope is basically to express a hope in the future. The pattern is as follows

S + hope + future simple / present simple
In the sentence:
 I hope I can see you
 I hope she will like it.
 I hope she can forgive me.
 I hope they are happy.
 I hope she'll understand.
 I hope she can manage.
 I hope there's no fight.
 I hope you can finish it.
 I hope they will win it.
 I hope nobody's hurt.

Dialogue 1 :
Rita : Where have you been? I have not seen you for two days.
Dewa : Well, I have been sick since Sunday
Rita : What is wrong?
Dewa : I have had a terrible cold all week.
Rita : Oh, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better soon.
Dewa : Thanks, Rita.

Dialogue 2 :
Gina: Hi, Jean. How are you doing?
Jean: Bad.
Gina: What’s wrong?
Jean: My father got sick. He has to stay in the hospital for a few days to get medical care.
Gina: What happened to him?
Jean: He got cancer.
Gina: I’m sorry to hear that. But you still go to school?
Jean: Yea, my mom told me that I have to go to school. She is in the hospital to accompany
my dad.
Gina: I hope your dad will get better soon.

Dialogue 3:
A: Tomorrow my lil brother will celebrate his birthday.
B: Good. I hope he has a nice birthday party.
A: Thank you. You should come.
B: I am sorry, I can’t go anywhere tomorrow.

 KESIMPULAN

Mengungkapkan sebuah harapan, baik untuk orang lain maupun untuk diri sendiri
adalah sebuah hal yang normal dan sering dilakukan di dalam sebuah percakapan, terlebih
dalam percakapan sehari-hari.

Kata “hope” digunakan di dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai sebuah “harapan” atau bisa
dikatakan sesuatu yang dapat dengan mudah atau secara realistis tercapai apabila pembicara
melakukan sesuatu untuk mencapainya.
