a) Course Overview and description


Use of mathematical tools for the analysis of Chemical Engineering Operations; Process modeling
and Dynamic Analysis. Statistical test. Regression design of experiments

d) Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to;

1. Be able to know the various mathematical tools available in modeling chemical


engineering systems [Q1, O1.1, O2, O4.2, O5].
2. Have learnt and acquire more Mathematics skills to handle numerous problems included
in the topics discussed [Q1, O1.1, O2, O2.1, O2.2, O2.3]
3. Know how to generate and solve practical problems arising from day to day chemical and
Bio-Chemical Engineering and scientific operations [O1, O2, O2.1, O2.2, O2.3, O3]
4. Have developed competence and confidence through numerous worked examples and
assignments with increased responsibility passing to the student [O3, O4, O4.2, O5.1,
O5.2]
5. Be able to apply the knowledge gained in his/her engineering course of study [O2.1,
O5.2, O12.2].

e) Expectations of Students
i. Attend three (3) hours of lectures per week
ii. Turn in assignments and term papers as deemed fit by the instructors
iii. Complete continuous assessment which comprises of quizzes and mid-semester test
iv. Complete a three (3) hour comprehensive final examination at the end of the
semester.

Reduction of Order; Development and use of The Euler – Cauchy Equation 3
Higher Order Differential Equations. General solutions of Homogenous Linear Differential
Equations. Linear Independence and Dependence of solutions: The Wronskian or Wronski
Determinant 4
Integral transforms: Laplace transform, Derivation of transforms and inverses 5
Applications of these transform in boundary and initial value problems. 6
Process modeling and Dynamic Analysis: Problem formulation and solution in Chemical
Engineering. 7
