BFC 32602 – M&E SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS

Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Department of Building and Construction Engineering

Group Project

Project Description:

One of the main objective of building design is to ensure the provision of continuous comfort for
occupants in spite of adversity and variable external conditions. Parallel technological development
has resulted in the use of mechanical and electrical system, which is complex and advancing, to
maintain a good balance between human comfort and the environment.

Students are required to plan a group trip (maximum of 5 students per group) to any existing and
occupied building to run a study on its operating Mechanical & Electrical System. Students are
expected to cover at least any two systems of the building based on the course topic. Thorough
understanding of the system is expected from the students along with the building system drawings
(plans / sections / 3D). The knowledge gained through theory taught in lectures and study visits will
be used as a guide to produce schematic drawings for mechanical and electrical systems using any
drawing aid i.e. AutoCAD, 3D SketchUP, etc. for the building.

Project Objective:

1. To organize an educational visit to a building identified as the case study.

2. To explain and justify the M&E system in the building through report and schematic drawings
with specified standard and requirements

Project Outcome:

1. Technical Report in A4 size (min. 10 pages and max. 30 pages)

Contents:
 Building Background and Location
 M&E System identified in the building and its function
 Drawings layout (plan / section / 3D) of the systems in the building
 Standard and requirements for M&E System identified in the building

2. Power Point/Video Presentation(max.10 slides for 7 minutes presentation & 3 minutes Q&A)

Project Assessment:

1. Project Coordination: 10 marks

2. Presentation Technique and Communication: 10 marks
3. Report and Drawings: 10 marks

Project Submission:

No later than Thursday, Lecture Week 12, lecturer’s room, 2.30 p.m.
