1. INTRODUCTION
The URD range mixers (also called “proportioners”) provide the correct mixing of water and
foaming by means of a constant control of the respective supply lines pressures.
All this is achieved through an automatic measuring valve provided with a variable
orifice placed on the foaming line where the percentage to mix is supplied proportionally to
the instant water capacity.

To assure a perfect functioning, the supply pressure of the foaming must be kept
always higher than the water flow pressure of at least 1 bar.

These devices are particularly suitable to be used in high capacity fire-fighting systems,
mainly in plants with many users to be powered at the same time.

2. WORKING PRINCIPLE
The required mixing ratio (ratio between the foaming and water capacities) is kept constant
thanks to the adopted special technical solution.
In the below working scheme of the URD mixer, we can single out 4 functional
parts:

a) Plenum valve: this element regu-

lates the
foaming capacity (FOAM) according to
the pressure difference between the
two lines: the water supply line (PW1)
and the foam supply line (PF2); in this
way it’s possible to keep the mixing
ratio constant, even when the lines
pressures change.

b) Mix calibration device: this ele-

ment
allows to graduate the required mixing
ratio. For this purpose, two equivalent
devices can be used: the orifice meter
or the ball valve.
c) Venturi tube: this element generates the line pressure drop down to a pressure
level (PW2) which allows the foaming input; in this way it’s possible to keep the
mixing ratio always constant, even when the line pressure changes.
d) Y filter: this element retains all the impurities which the foaming may contain, thus avoid-
ing possible occlusions inside the mixer.
To assure a proper functioning, the foam supply pressure must always be kept higher of at
least 1 bar than that of the water flow.
The pressure gauges allow to check the correct functioning of the mixer showing the pres-
sure levels in the plenum chambers, that is, the pressure of the foaming (PF2) and the line
pressure (PW1).

The structure of the automatic mixers is made of the following parts:

illustrative drawing, not valid for assembly

3. STRUCTURE
a) UPPER BODY The upper block is made of an upper part and of an central part; the upper
part in two chambers directly connected to the water and foam supply
lines and separated by a mobile membrane. In this way any pres-
sure change causes a repositioning of the valve keeping the required
mixing percentage. In the central part there’s the seat for the reduc-
ing valve. In all standard models, the cases and covers are made in
cast iron (they can also be made in stainless steel and carbon steel
on request). All the internal parts are made in stainless steel AISI
316L.
b) CALIBRATION BLOCK The calibration block is outfitted according to the required mixing ratio. For
the calibration blocks with fixed mixing ratio, preset orifice meters are
used, whereas a special ball valve is used for the calibration blocks with
adjustable mixing ratio. The calibration block also includes the con-
necting nuts and bolts as well as gaskets and shims if needed.
c) LOWER BODY The lower body is the whole set designed to be assembled with the water
supply line: it’s made of a Venturi nozzle made in sizes which can
vary according to the required capacity. In the minimum section of
the Venturi nozzles there are holes which allow the flow of the foam com-
ing from the central body. The foaming is automatically sucked in due
to the vacuum generated by the Venturi device and then directly injected
into the water. All the lower body parts (connecting flanges, external and
divergent shell) are made in carbon steel with the exception of the Ven-
turi nozzle which is made in bronze.
d) TUBES BLOCK The tubes block include the connecting soft copper tube and relative joints
which are necessary to connect the upper body to the lower.
e) PRESSURE GAUGE BLOCK The pressure gauge block is composed of a pressure gauge, a ball cock
and by the applicable pipe fittings. The pressure gauge scale goes from 0
to 25 bar; the case is in AISI 316 whereas the pivot is in nickel-plated
brass; to reduce vibrations, all pressure gauges cases are immersed
in a glycerin bath.
f) Y LINE FILTER The external body, made in cast iron, contains the replaceable cartridge in
stainless steel AISI 316.
g) CONNECTION PARTS The connection parts include gaskets and nuts and bolts.

In the following drawing all the above mentioned parts are represented, while the external dimensions are
indicated in the next pages.

B Complete American variant Flanges ANSI 150 PSI + pressure gauges + Y Filter
Mixing ratio = indicates the ratio between the foam and water capacity:
3 Mixing at 3% (with orifice meter) 4 Mixing at 4% (with orifice meter)
6 Mixing at 6% (with orifice meter) R Adjustable mixing (with valve)
The mixing ratio may be fixed (when obtained by means of appropriately pierced orifice meters)
or adjustable (when provided with a valve or cock which portions the foaming percentage).
When the valve is completely open (adjustment 100%), the foaming percentage is at 6%.

Example: URD 0300 A1BR = Mixer MV 300, ANSI flanges, with regulation valve.

8. REGULATION VALVE
The automatic mixers can be supplied with a special valve for the regulation of the foaming liquid
percentage. Here below please find a short description of a regulation valve allowing a foam percentage
variation from 0 to 6%.

The picture shows a regulation valve in fully open position (mix-

ing percentage at 6%).
The anticlockwise grab bar rotation allows to select the re-
quired regulation from position 0 to position 6.

9 MAINTENANCE

Here below please find the periodical maintenance activities to carry out to upkeep
the mixer in the best possible operating conditions:

Period of time Checks & Actions

a) Check of the water line pressure gauge integrity through visual
inspection.
b) Check of the copper tube integrity through visual inspection.
Weekly
c) Check of the integrity of all connections to the supply lines through
visual inspection.
d) Replace the damaged parts and repaint where necessary.
a) Replace the set of rubber membranes contained in the upper body
to prevent possible malfunctioning caused by the material wear.
Yearly
b) Lubricate both sides of the membranes set spraying a thin layer of
liquid silicon before assembling the upper body.
a) Empty the supply lines completely.
In case of plant use b) Replace the rubber membranes set following the above mentioned
instructions.
