REGULAR SET-UP
Pull your driver, and take your normal
address position, the clubhead’s
sweetspot right behind the ball as
normal. Make sure at least half the ball
is above the driver’s crown, and that
the ball is opposite your lead heel, or
just inside.
BETTER COIL
When you move the club back slowly like this,
you engage your shoulders and upper body.
Effectively you are starting the swing with
your core already slightly turned, and this
primes it to make its full contribution to your
backswing coil. That will improve your action’s
path, width and power.
HEAD START
Now move the clubhead back along the
turf, until it is just past the outside of
your train foot, and hold it there. As you
do this, allow the hands and forearms
to rotate slightly. The face should look
slightly open to the ball-target line.
IMPROVED PATH
This new position also means you are starting
the swing with your weight and centre slightly
behind the ball. This moves the swing’s low
point back slightly, allowing the club to bottom
out before catching the ball on its upward arc.
This helps you attack the ball from the inside,
as well as promoting a stronger ball flight.
1.FOOTLINE
W atch any tour pro play a
standard bunker shot these
days and you will see an action
that works in-to-in, just like any normal
golf shot. This is quite a diversion from
mandated cutting across the ball with
an open face. In-to-in is proven to ofer

easy; this open stance gives your lead hip a
little extra assistance in clearing.
2.TARGETLINE
Naturally this line remains parallel to the
ball-target line at any point between the
ball and your feet.
3.SWINGPATH
This is perhaps a slightly curvier
representation of the journey we want
1 the club to take, but it’s important you
visualise the swing path in bunkers very
2 much as in-to-in. This gets you out of
the old out-to-in way of thinking and
encourages you to swing at the target,
not across it.
4.BALLPOSITION
Play the ball forward of centre, under your
lead chest. This promotes impact with
the club moving in the level section at the
3 base of its arc – ideal for the shallow sand

strike with plenty of height.
SWINGAROUNDYOURBODY
Those address adjustments will promote the
correct, modern in-to-in attack. But during
the swing itself, focus on making a more
rotary action that sees armswing and body
turn working together to move the club back
and through around you. Picture the clubhead
describing that curved, in-to-in arc through
the ball. You will gain three chief benefits:
SHALLOWERSTRIKEPATTERN
The ideal bunker strike sees a shallow, level
attack angle. When you deliver the club into
the ball on a shallow arc, the curved sole can
skim the sand properly, helping you limit the
amount of sand trapped between the face
and the ball. That means control of strike
and distance. With out-to-in, the attack gets
steeper and the contact less controllable.
MOREACCURACY
The theory with out-to-in was that the open
clubface offset the leftward path (right-
handers). This was flawed, because as the
face gets weaker it has less influence on shot

target every time. hands in front of it. This position reveals a good,
even contribution of arms and core that allows
the club to move correctly around your body.
SIMPLER
BALL POSITION
One other problem with out-to-in
was that it encouraged a wide-open
stance. With the foot line so far of the
ball-target line, golfers would struggle to
position the ball correctly in their stance
– typically it would go too far back. Played

in-to-in allows you to position the ball

EXERCISE #1
TWO CLUBS (30S)
Start by taking two mid irons out of your bag.
Place the handles together, faces of both square
to your target, and grip them in your palms as
shown. Make slow, full swings, allowing the
extra weight to stretch out the key golfing
muscles of your shoulders, chest and back.
FINISH IT OFF
Those muscles need to work throughout your
motion, so it’s just as important to stretch out
the throughswing. Make sure you complete your
two-club swing. Sweep right through to a finish,
chest facing left of the target , belt right at it and
trail foot up on its toe.
Why you need to do this: This is simply to add
a little bit of weight to get the blood pumping in
preparation for the rest of the routine. The start
should be slow before building up a bit of speed.
EXERCISE #2: CLUB IN EACH HAND (30S) EXERCISE #3: LEG SWINGS FORWARD AND BACK (30S)
Now separate the clubs and grip one in each hand. Make the same slow, full swing, Place your driver in front of you and lean on the handle. Spend 15 seconds swinging the

WHY ATTACK
ANGLE MATTERS
You might think that when it comes to
power, club and ball speed are king. But
picture two golfers with identical speeds,
one hitting slightly up through the ball and
the other chopping down on it.
SPIN LOFT
So called ‘spin loft’ – basically the difference
between the club’s loft at impact and the angle
on which it is attacking the ball – is one of golf’s
secret distance parameters. When spin loft goes
up – think chopping down with masses of loft – so
does spin, and you create a weak, powerless
flight… even if your ball speed is high.
BETTER PATH
Swing path and attack angle are linked. A
downward attack works in tandem with an
out-to-in swing shape, while an upward attack
promotes a square or slightly in-to-out path. So
besides keeping your spin down, a shallower, level-
to-up attack also straightens out your attack,
helping you hit more up on the back of the ball. That
ensures a much more efficient and powerful strike.
SET UP TO HIT UP
Use your address position to promote the
ideal attack angle. Ideally we are looking to

ON-PLANE DELIVERY
In a perfectly on-plane downswing, your
clubshaft will aim parallel to your ball-target
line as it swings through horizontal. This is
more something to be aware of than to try to
create, but if you start hitting big pushes or
pulls, work on staging this position before
trying to repeat it at speed.

NEW AIM
So to make this stable delivery work in your favour,
simply swivel your address position to aim further
left (right-handers). Pick a new target 10-15 yards
left of where you want to finish and set up with
that further back ball position.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Ultimately, this technique means making your
normal swing… just with the ball further back and
your aim further left (right-handers). It takes a
little courage to aim left of where you want to send
the ball, but trust that back ball position and make
your normal, committed swing.
CONTROLLED STRIKE
Very quickly you will gain the feel of how this
technique allows you to “block” the ball down the
fairway. It’s a simple, repeatable and effective way
of putting the ball into position… and it will save
you loads of shots.
