Lab Report # 4:
Demonstration of Boiler accessories.

Objectives:
i. To know about different types of boiler accessories.
ii. To understand about their working principle.

Theoretical Background:
Accessories:
Those devices which contribute to increase the overall efficiency of steam power plant.

Types:

Accessories

Super Air Feed Water

Economiser
heater Preheater pump

1. Economiser:
A device in which feed water is heated before entering the boiler. Feed water can be
heated in two ways.

i. Those which take heat from steam in non-condensory power plant or even from fresh
steam of boiler.
ii. Those which take heat from hot gases leaving the boiler to chimney.

Advantages:
i. Stress due to uneven expansion is reduced because the temperature range between
boiler parts is reduced.
ii. Saving in the Fuel consumption.
iii. Overall efficiency increases.
iv. Evaporative capacity of the boiler is increased. And hence increasing the steam
production.
v. Protection from chilling of boiler metal. And hence increasing the life of boiler.

2. Super heater:
A super heater is a device which is used to convert wet or saturated steam is
known as super heater.

Types:

radiant Convective
Radiant Type:
A radiant superheater is placed directly in the combustion chamber.

Convective Type:
A convection superheater is located in the path of the hot gases.

Advantages:
i. During expansion of steam in turbine, steam doesn’t come in dual phase region.
ii. Rusting is minimized.
iii. Steam consumption of the engine or turbine is reduced.

3. Air Preheater:
A heat energy recovery device which is used to heat the air entering combustion
chamber.

Advantages:
i. Results in high furnace temperature.
ii. Faster combustion of fuel.
iii. Efficiency of boiler is increased.

4. Feed water pump:

Boiler feed pumps are commonly used to pump the feed water into a steam
boiler.
