Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla, the visionary behind HOPE, founded the NGO in 1997 with
a group of dedicated workers committed to bringing literacy and health to the
neglected urban slums of Karachiwhile working at the grassroots level. Under her
direction, HOPE has established two community centres, two hospitals and several
informal schools in Karachi and Thatta. Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla is Assistant
Professor, Dept. of Community Health Sciences, at the Aga Khan University Hospital
besides working as a Consultant Paediatrician in various Karachi Hospitals. She is a
well known Researcher and has contributed to numerous Indexed international
medical journals. She also writes for various national newspapers including Dawn,
Jang etc.
Tariq A. Niazi

Mr. Tariq Niazi is the Principal Consultant and co-founder of Pinekl Marketing and
Communications. He has been involved in HOPE since its inception, serving as
Secretary General and Executive Committee member. He is especially concerned
with HOPE’s social marketing, education programmes, and information technology
and data base. He has previously been working and Country Manager Digital
Communication, as well has been associated with Pemcon (Pvt) , Ltd as General
Manager Marketing.
Dr. Khalid Omer

Director

HOPE

Dr. Khalid Omer is one of the founders of HOPE and has assisted it in various
technical aspects throughout the years. He has also served as a treasurer and is
currently on the Board of Directors. Dr. Khalid Omer deals with various data based
research projects being conducted by HOPE as well as health advocacy campaigns.
Dr. Khalid Omer is the National Coordinator, CIET, Pakistan .. He has previously
worked as Health Consultant for UNICEF and with Greenstar Social Marketing.
Health Oriented Preventive Education) is an NGO providing services of health and education for
the poor and needy in Pakistan. The major activities of HOPE includes provision of health care
through hospitals and maternal and child health centers. In addition education for children is provided
through formal and informal schools. Vocational centers provide computers and vocational training
for youth.

HOPE was established in 1997 and has grown from a band of street volunteers to a huge
national network of schools and hospitals. Health and education are priority areas of HOPE,
whereby HOPE is running Maternal and Child Health Centres as well as two hospitals.The
HOPE network extends from Karachi in the south to Thatta, Dadu and the mountains of
Kashmir . Research activities of HOPE extends from collaborations with the Centre for Disease
Control (CDC), WHO, UNICEF among others on topics such as hand washing, Safe water, Safe
injections, Poliomyelitis, tuberculosis etc. The education component forms the foundation of of
HOPEs activities as without education of children and youth there will be no awareness and
enlightment. The future vision of HOPE is to expand its activities in other remote areas of
Pakistan. With Gods help HOPE will go where others have not dared. We are but just a drop in
the ocean, but we will strive to change the lives of the people we touch.
Introduction of HOPE

HOPE (Health Oriented Preventive Education ) is a NGO (non-governmental


organization) based in Karachi, Pakistan working towards Community Development,
comprising of professionals ( Doctors, Social workers, Educationists ) as well as
grass-root workers.

The ultimate aim of HOPE is Community Development through self-sufficiency of the


community. The members of HOPE are working side by side with community
volunteers and organize them in Community Based Organizations ( CBO'S ). All
activities in the community are planned into co-ordination with the CBO'S and
implemented in the community through the CBO'S. Hence, the community becomes
SELF- SUFFICIENT and the community development work is SUSTAINABLE.

HOPE is presently addressing the following issues in the community.

• Community Development and Organization into CBO'S.

• Community Motivation.

• Provision of Primary Health Care Services.

• Awareness raising in community through Literacy programmes.

• Income-generation activities.

• Environmental Sanitation.

• Promotion of Hygienic Health Practices.


Through Community Development and Community Organization active members of
the community, both males and females, are organized into CBO'S ( Community
Based Organizations ) The community work is implemented through the community
volunteers. HOPE believes in providing a package of community development
working together with grass-root CBOs. This includes provision of Primacy Health
Care (prevention of diarrhoea, malnutrition, promotion of breast-feeding,
vaccination, ante-natal care, family-planning, prevention of AIDs) as well as
imparting awareness to the population through improvement of literacy status of
children and women, income-generation activities as well as environmental
sanitation and solid waste management.

HOPE is an NGO, working towards Community Development through community


participation. HOPE believes not in giving but in sharing problems and solutions. The
motto is SELF-SUFFICIENCY and SUSTAINABILITY.

Collaborative work has been working on in Tharparkar with collaboration of other


NGOs.

The core workers of HOPE have 5-10 years of experience in community


development work in major Katchi-abadis of Karachi.

What we have achieved:

• Three charitable Hospitals 20 bedded each, fully equipped O.T, labor room, NICU, 75,,000
patients annually
• 200 informal home schools 9000 children Karachi, interior Sindh and Muzaffarabad
• Support a Marriage.
• Two charitable Hospitals 20 bedded each, fully equipped O.T, labor room, NICU, 50,000
patients annually.
• Two formal schools up to metric 1000 students Karachi and Thatta.
• 195 informal home schools 9000 children Karachi, interior Sindh and Muzaffarabad.
• 5 vocational center, computers, sewing/cutting Karachi, Thatta and Muzaffarabad.
• Nutrition support programme, Supplementary Feeding Centers (SFP) and Community Based
Therapeutic Centers (CTC), 78,000 women and children in dadu.
• 52 health facilities monitored in earthquake affected areas of AJK.
• Crisis centre for violence against women.
