Design a listening activity

Lesson Title: Feelings and Emotions.

Describe your target audience: 9th grade
Describe the aims of the activity (Bloom’s Taxonomy): Recognize the different kind
of words, analyze the lyrics given by the app, debate about what the songs means for
them and how feeling are transmitted through music identifying them.
Length: 90 minutes
Material or tool to use: electronic devices (cellphones, computers, etc.), pen, note-
books, cellphone applications, board, speakers.

Describe the procedure:

- Students are going to work in groups of five using the webpage Lyrics Training
to listen a song that is going to be given by the teacher (Wake me up by Avicii)
so they will have to follow and complete the lyric with the app. Meanwhile stu-
dents are following the lyric, they will have to obtain the key words given by the
app and classify them by its type.
- Once finished the preview activity students are going to explain what they un-
derstood when listening the song and what they think and believe that the
singer is trying to transmit through the melody.
- Finally, students are going to watch a video about the writer of the song and
what was he really trying to explain with his song. The teacher is going to ex-
plain about how feelings and emotions are transmitted through songs and how
they can identify them and also how to face them when they think they are
passing through this.
Develop of the class:

PRE: the class is going to start with a short explanation about feelings and emotions.
Where and when they are presented in our life. Asking questions like.’’Do you think we
can show emotions through music?, What emotions can we put into a song? Etc.

WHILE: the app is going to be explained and how they can use it.
Using the app or website(which is the same), students are going to memorize at the
same time, following the song they have to fill in the gaps with some words.that are
missing in the lyric.
Students are going to extract key words given by the application and classify them
according their type. (verb, adjective, noun, pronoun) according to the word.
Students are going to tell what they think about the meaning of the song they have just
listened (recognizing the main idea)
And what where the author’s emotions (inferring)

post: The teacher is going to play a video about Avicii’s life and what he tried to trans-
mit in his songs and how feelings and emotions are involved. Introducing the news
about the author, students are going to debate about emotions and how they affected
avicii’s songs, and life.

CLOSURE: students are going to debate and reflect about feelings and how they ex-
press and identify them in their lives. Reviewing the song activity and some words
learnt
Lyrics Training examples:
After doing the activity, reflect and answer these questions:

How is listening to a song different from other types of listening?

-Listening to a song is very different to a narration recorded, students usually find them
boring compared with a song which has melody and rhythm in it. Songs can be a sum-
mer trend, or even the lyric can be related significantly with their own life.
Songs are attractive as well as catchy.

• What kinds of listening skills and strategies are students going to practice?

- They are going to infer the main idea and the emotions of the author, memorice and
identify words, clarify them, reflect about the topic of the song.

• How easy was it to find the song and the lyrics?

- for us as teachers finding a song that is trendy is not so difficult, it is a popular sum-
mer song and also, the author is on the news recently. So, it is a song that students
can easily relate.

• Would your students be able to do this type of activity on their own?

As we said before, following the lyrics of a song can be fun, and what better than a
catchy son, this is why, they find it interesting. Also, the app can be downloaded on a
smartphone, which most of the kids have or at home in a computer.
Their parents can lend their phones too, so they can practice at home as a game and
as a tool for learning proposes.
